The Influence of Quantum Critical Fluctuations of Circulating Current Order Parameters on the Normal State Properties of Cuprates

We study a model of the quantum critical point of cuprates associated with the "circulating current" order parameter proposed by Varma. An effective action of the order parameter in the quantum disordered phase is derived using functional integral method, and the physical properties of the normal state are studied based on the action. The results derived within the ladder approximation indicate that the system is like Fermi liquid near the quantum critical point and in disordered regime up to minor corrections. This implies that the suggested marginal Fermi liquid behavior induced by the circulating current fluctuations will come in from beyond the ladder diagrams.

Korringa ratio of ferromagnetically correlated impure metals

The Korringa ratio, $\cal K$, obtained by taking an appropriate combination of the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, is calculated at finite temperature, $T$, in the three-dimensional electron gas model, including the electron-electron interaction, $U$, and non-magnetic impurity scatterings. $\cal K$ varies in a simple way with respect to $U$ and $T$; it decreases as $U$ is increased but increases as $T$ is raised. However, $\cal K$ varies in a slightly more complicated way with respect to the impurity scatterings; as the scattering rate is increased, $\cal K$ increases for small $U$ and low $T$, but decreases for large $U$ or high $T$ regime. This calls for a more careful analysis when one attempts to estimate the Stoner factor from $\cal K$.

Optical conductivity in the normal state fullerene superconductors

We calculate the optical conductivity, $σ(ω)$, in the normal state fullerene superconductors by self-consistently including the impurity scatterings, the electron-phonon and electron-electron Coulomb interactions. The finite bandwidth of the fullerenes is explicitely considered, and the vertex corection is included $a$ $la$ Nambu in calculating the renormalized Green's function. $σ(ω)$ is obtained by calculating the current-current correlation function with the renormalized Green's function in the Matsubara frequency and then performing analytic continuation to the real frequency at finite temperature. The Drude weight in $σ(ω)$ is strongly suppressed due to the interactions and transfered to the mid-infrared region around and above 0.06 eV which is somewhat less pronounced and much broader compared with the expermental observation by DeGiorgi $et$ $al$.

Andreev reflections in the pseudogap state of cuprate supercondcutors

We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$. After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above $T_c$---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for the preformed pairs in the pseudogap state.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of the Underdoped High-$T_{c}$ Superconductors

Considering a possibility that the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is not due to a superconducting correlation, we study the tunneling spectroscopy below $T_{c}$ based on the phenomenological models of the pseudogap state. Specifically we consider two cases: (1) the pseudogap is a simple suppression of the density of states with an unknown origin; (2) the pseudogap state is due to an antiferromagnetic correlation. For both cases we calculate $dI/dV$ using the BTK theory. The results are discussed in comparison with experiments.

Coulomb suppression of NMR coherence peak in fullerene superconductors

The suppressed NMR coherence peak in the fullerene superconductors is explained in terms of the dampings in the superconducting state induced by the Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons. The Coulomb interaction, modelled in terms of the onsite Hubbard repulsion, is incorporated into the Eliashberg theory of superconductivity with its frequency dependence considered self-consistently at all temperatures. The vertex correction is also included via the method of Nambu. The frequency dependent Coulomb interaction induces the substantial dampings in the superconducting state and, consequently, suppresses the anticipated NMR coherence peak of fullerene superconductors as found experimentally.

Finite-Band-width Effects on the Transition Temperature and NMR Relaxation Rate of Impure Superconductors

We study the thermodynamic properties of impure superconductors by explicitly taking into consideration the finiteness of electronic bandwidths within the phonon-mediated Eliashberg formalism. For a finite electronic bandwidth, the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, is suppressed by nonmagnetic impurity scatterings. This is a consequence of a reduction in the effective electron-phonon coupling, $λ_{eff}$. The reduced $λ_{eff}$ is reflected in the observation that the coherence peak in $1/(T_1 T)$, where $T_1$ is the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time and $T$ is the temperature, is enhanced by impurity scatterings for a finite bandwidth. Calculations are presented for $T_c$ and $1/(T_1 T)$ as bandwidths and impurity scattering rates are varied. Implications for doped C$_{60}$ superconductors are discussed in connection with $T_c$ and $1/T_1$ measurements.

Effects of Impurity Vertex Correction on NMR Coherence Peak in S-Wave Superconductors

We study the effects of non-magnetic impurity vertex correction on nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/{T_1} $ of conventional s-wave superconductors within the Eliashberg formalism. We obtain, with a self-consistent $t-$matrix treatment of impurity scatterings, the expressions for impurity vertex function and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. The $1/T_1$ is evaluated with a simple approximation on angular average, and found to agree in clean limit with the previous result that $1/(T_1 T)$ remains unrenormalized under the impurity vertex correction. As dirtiness is increased, on the other hand, the coherence peak in $1/(T_1 T)$ is found to increase due to the impurity vertex correction. This result is discussed in connection with the experimental observations on conventional superconductors.
