On the KO-groups of toric manifolds

In this paper we consider the real topological K-groups of a toric manifold M, which turns out to be closely related to the topology of the small cover MR, the fixed points under the canonical conjugation on M . Following the work of Bahri and Bendersky [2], we give an explicit formula for the KO-groups of toric manifolds, and then we characterize the two extreme classes of toric manifolds according to the two A(1) modules shown in [2].

Graph invariants and Betti numbers of real toric manifolds

For a graph $G$, a graph cubeahedron $\square_G$ and a graph associahedron $\triangle_G$ are simple convex polytopes which admit (real) toric manifolds. In this paper, we introduce a graph invariant, called the $b$-number, and we show that the $b$-numbers compute the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_G)$ corresponding to a graph cubeahedron. The $b$-number is a counterpart of the notion of $a$-number, introduced by S. Choi and the second named author, which computes the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ corresponding to a graph associahedron. We also study various relationships between $a$-numbers and $b$-numbers from a toric topological view. Interestingly, for a forest $G$ and its line graph $L(G)$, the real toric manifolds $X^\mathbb{R}(\triangle_G)$ and $X^\mathbb{R}(\square_{L(G)})$ have the same Betti numbers.

Multiplication structure of the cohomology ring of real toric spaces

A real toric space is a topological space which admits a well-behaved $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$-action. Real moment-angle complexes and real toric varieties are typical examples of real toric spaces. A real toric space is determined by a pair of a simplicial complex $K$ and a characteristic matrix $Λ$. In this paper, we provide an explicit $R$-cohomology ring formula of a real toric space in terms of $K$ and $Λ$, where $R$ is a commutative ring with unity in which $2$ is a unit. Interestingly, it has a natural $(\mathbb{Z} \oplus \operatorname*{row} Λ)$-grading. As corollaries, we compute the cohomology rings of (generalized) real Bott manifolds in terms of binary matroids, and we also provide a criterion for real toric spaces to be cohomology symplectic.

Small covers over wedges of polygons

A small cover is a closed smooth manifold of dimension $n$ having a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action whose orbit space is isomorphic to a simple polytope. A typical example of small covers is a real projective toric manifold (or, simply, a real toric manifold), that is, a real locus of projective toric manifold. In the paper, we classify small covers and real toric manifolds whose orbit space is isomorphic to the dual of the simplicial complex obtainable by a sequence of wedgings from a polygon, using a systematic combinatorial method finding toric spaces called puzzles.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries II

A fundamental idea in toric topology is that classes of manifolds with well-behaved torus actions (simply, toric spaces) are classified by pairs of simplicial complexes and (non-singular) characteristic maps. The authors in their previous paper provided a new way to find all characteristic maps on a simplicial complex $K(J)$ obtainable by a sequence of wedgings from $K$. The main idea was that characteristic maps on $K$ theoretically determine all possible characteristic maps on a wedge of $K$. In this work, we further develop our previous work for classification of toric spaces. For a star-shaped simplicial sphere $K$ of dimension $n-1$ with $m$ vertices, the Picard number $\operatorname{Pic}(K)$ of $K$ is $m-n$. We refer to $K$ a seed if $K$ cannot be obtained by wedgings. First, we show that, for a fixed positive integer $\ell$, there are at most finitely many seeds of Picard number $\ell$ supporting characteristic maps. As a corollary, the conjecture proposed by V. V. Batyrev in 1991 is solved affirmatively. Second, we investigate a systematic way to find all characteristic maps on $K(J)$ using combinatorial objects called (realizable) puzzles that only depend on a seed $K$. These two facts lead to a practical way to classify the toric spaces of fixed Picard number.

Wedge operations and a new family of projective toric manifolds

Let $P_m(J)$ denote a simplicial complex obtainable from consecutive wedge operations from an $m$-gon. In this paper, we completely classify toric manifolds over $P_m(J)$ and prove that all of them are projective. As a consequence, we provide an infinite family of projective toric manifolds.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries

A fundamental result of toric geometry is that there is a bijection between toric varieties and fans. More generally, it is known that some class of manifolds having well-behaved torus actions, called topological toric manifolds $M^{2n}$, can be classified in terms of combinatorial data containing simplicial complexes with $m$ vertices. We remark that topological toric manifolds are a generalization of smooth toric varieties. The number $m-n$ is known as the Picard number when $M^{2n}$ is a {compact smooth} toric variety. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the topological toric manifolds over a simplicial complex $K$ and those over the complex obtained by simplicial wedge operations from $K$. As applications, we do the following. 1. We classify smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3. This is a reproving of a result of Batyrev. 2. We give a new and complete proof of projectivity of smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3 originally proved by Kleinschmidt and Sturmfels. 3. We find a criterion for a toric variety over the join of boundaries of simplices to be projective. When the toric variety is smooth, it is known as a generalized Bott manifold which is always projective. 4. We classify and enumerate real topological toric manifolds when $m-n=3$. 5. When $m-n \leq 3$, any real topological toric manifold is realizable as fixed points of the conjugation of a topological toric manifold.

On the cohomology and their torsion of real toric objects

In this paper, we do the two things. 1. We present a formula to compute the rational cohomology ring of a real topological toric manifold, and thus that of a small cover or a real toric manifold, which implies the formula of Suciu and Trevisan. Furthermore, the formula also works for other coefficient $\mathbb{Z}_q = \mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$, where $q$ is a positive odd integer. 2. We construct infinitely many real toric manifolds and small covers whose integral cohomology have a $q$-torsion for any positive odd integer $q$.

A new graph invariant arises in toric topology

In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.
