First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Paraphrase Generation with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Automatic generation of paraphrases from a given sentence is an important yet challenging task in natural language processing (NLP), and plays a key role in a number of applications such as question answering, search, and dialogue. In this paper, we present a deep reinforcement learning approach to paraphrase generation. Specifically, we propose a new framework for the task, which consists of a \textit{generator} and an \textit{evaluator}, both of which are learned from data. The generator, built as a sequence-to-sequence learning model, can produce paraphrases given a sentence. The evaluator, constructed as a deep matching model, can judge whether two sentences are paraphrases of each other. The generator is first trained by deep learning and then further fine-tuned by reinforcement learning in which the reward is given by the evaluator. For the learning of the evaluator, we propose two methods based on supervised learning and inverse reinforcement learning respectively, depending on the type of available training data. Empirical study shows that the learned evaluator can guide the generator to produce more accurate paraphrases. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed models (the generators) outperform the state-of-the-art methods in paraphrase generation in both automatic evaluation and human evaluation.

Direct Observation of Broadband Nonclassical States in a Room-temperature Light-matter Interface

Nonclassical state is an essential resource for quantum-enhanced communication, computing and metrology to outperform their classical counterpart. The nonclassical states that can operate at high bandwidth and room temperature while being compatible with quantum memory are highly desirable to enable the scalability of quantum technologies. Here, we present a direct observation of broadband nonclasscal states in a room-temperature light-matter interface, where the atoms can also be controlled to store and interfere with photons. With a single coupling pulse and far off-resonance configuration, we are able to induce a multi-field interference between light and atoms to create the desired nonclassical states by spectrally selecting the two correlated photons out of seven possible emissions. We explicitly confirm the nonclassicality by observing a cross correlation up to 17 and a violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality with 568 standard deviations. Our results demonstrate the potential of a state-built-in, broadband and room-temperature light-matter interface for scalable quantum information networks.

Supervised and Semi-Supervised Deep Neural Networks for CSI-Based Authentication

From the viewpoint of physical-layer authentication, spoofing attacks can be foiled by checking channel state information (CSI). Existing CSI-based authentication algorithms mostly require a deep knowledge of the channel to deliver decent performance. In this paper, we investigate CSI-based authenticators that can spare the effort to predetermine channel properties by utilizing deep neural networks (DNNs). We first propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-enabled authenticator that is able to extract the local features in CSI. Next, we employ the recurrent neural network (RNN) to capture the dependencies between different frequencies in CSI. In addition, we propose to use the convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN)---a combination of the CNN and the RNN---to learn local and contextual information in CSI for user authentication. To effectively train these DNNs, one needs a large amount of labeled channel records. However, it is often expensive to label large channel observations in the presence of a spoofer. In view of this, we further study a case in which only a small part of the the channel observations are labeled. To handle it, we extend these DNNs-enabled approaches into semi-supervised ones. This extension is based on a semi-supervised learning technique that employs both the labeled and unlabeled data to train a DNN. To be specific, our semi-supervised method begins by generating pseudo labels for the unlabeled channel samples through implementing the K-means algorithm in a semi-supervised manner. Subsequently, both the labeled and pseudo labeled data are exploited to pre-train a DNN, which is then fine-tuned based on the labeled channel records.

Electrically Tunable and Reconfigurable Topological Edge State Lasers

We report an actively tunable topological edge mode laser in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) laser chain, where the SSH chain is realized in an electrically-injected Fabry-Perot (FP) laser chain. A non-Hermitian SSH model is developed to investigate the SSH laser chain with tunable active topological defect. We theoretically demonstrate topological edge mode phase transition in the SSH laser chain. The phase transition manifested in the tight binding SSH laser chain is observed experimentally and agreed well with the theoretical predictions. Finally, by electronically tuning the gain and loss, a lossy topological mode is obtained, and lasing is experimentally observed in the lossy time-reversal configuration. This work presents a versatile platform to investigate novel concepts, such as topological mode, for main stream photonic applications.

High energy solution of the Choquard equation

The present paper is concerned with the existence of positive high energy solution of the Choquard equation. Under certain assumptions, the ground state of Choquard equation can not be achieved. However, by global compactness analysis, we prove that there exists a positive high energy solution.

Fast Budgeted Influence Maximization over Multi-Action Event Logs

In a social network, influence maximization is the problem of identifying a set of users that own the maximum {\it influence ability} across the network. In this paper, a novel credit distribution (CD) based model, termed as the multi-action CD (mCD) model, is introduced to quantify the influence ability of each user, which works with practical datasets where one type of action could be recorded for multiple times. Based on this model, influence maximization is formulated as a submodular maximization problem under a general knapsack constraint, which is NP-hard. An efficient streaming algorithm with one-round scan over the user set is developed to find a suboptimal solution. Specifically, we first solve a special case of knapsack constraints, i.e., a cardinality constraint, and show that the developed streaming algorithm can achieve ($\frac{1}{2}-ε$)-approximation of the optimality. Furthermore, for the general knapsack case, we show that the modified streaming algorithm can achieve ($\frac{1}{3}-ε$)-approximation of the optimality. Finally, experiments are conducted over real Twitter dataset and demonstrate that the mCD model enjoys high accuracy compared to the conventional CD model in estimating the total number of people who get influenced in a social network. Moreover, through the comparison to the conventional CD, non-CD models, and the mCD model with the greedy algorithm on the performance of the influence maximization problem, we show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed mCD model with the streaming algorithm.

Enhancing quantum control by bootstrapping a quantum processor of 12 qubits

Accurate and efficient control of quantum systems is one of the central challenges for quantum information processing. Current state-of-the-art experiments rarely go beyond 10 qubits and in most cases demonstrate only limited control. Here we demonstrate control of a 12-qubit system, and show that the system can be employed as a quantum processor to optimize its own control sequence by using measurement-based feedback control (MQFC). The final product is a control sequence for a complex 12-qubit task: preparation of a 12-coherent state. The control sequence is about 10% more accurate than the one generated by the standard (classical) technique, showing that MQFC can correct for unknown imperfections. Apart from demonstrating a high level of control over a relatively large system, our results show that even at the 12-qubit level, a quantum processor can be a useful lab instrument. As an extension of our work, we propose a method for combining the MQFC technique with a twirling protocol, to optimize the control sequence that produces a desired Clifford gate.

Meta-SGD: Learning to Learn Quickly for Few-Shot Learning

Few-shot learning is challenging for learning algorithms that learn each task in isolation and from scratch. In contrast, meta-learning learns from many related tasks a meta-learner that can learn a new task more accurately and faster with fewer examples, where the choice of meta-learners is crucial. In this paper, we develop Meta-SGD, an SGD-like, easily trainable meta-learner that can initialize and adapt any differentiable learner in just one step, on both supervised learning and reinforcement learning. Compared to the popular meta-learner LSTM, Meta-SGD is conceptually simpler, easier to implement, and can be learned more efficiently. Compared to the latest meta-learner MAML, Meta-SGD has a much higher capacity by learning to learn not just the learner initialization, but also the learner update direction and learning rate, all in a single meta-learning process. Meta-SGD shows highly competitive performance for few-shot learning on regression, classification, and reinforcement learning.

Sensor Network Based Collision-Free Navigation and Map Building for Mobile Robots

Safe robot navigation is a fundamental research field for autonomous robots including ground mobile robots and flying robots. The primary objective of a safe robot navigation algorithm is to guide an autonomous robot from its initial position to a target or along a desired path with obstacle avoidance. With the development of information technology and sensor technology, the implementations combining robotics with sensor network are focused on in the recent researches. One of the relevant implementations is the sensor network based robot navigation. Moreover, another important navigation problem of robotics is safe area search and map building. In this report, a global collision-free path planning algorithm for ground mobile robots in dynamic environments is presented firstly. Considering the advantages of sensor network, the presented path planning algorithm is developed to a sensor network based navigation algorithm for ground mobile robots. The 2D range finder sensor network is used in the presented method to detect static and dynamic obstacles. The sensor network can guide each ground mobile robot in the detected safe area to the target. Furthermore, the presented navigation algorithm is extended into 3D environments. With the measurements of the sensor network, any flying robot in the workspace is navigated by the presented algorithm from the initial position to the target. Moreover, in this report, another navigation problem, safe area search and map building for ground mobile robot, is studied and two algorithms are presented. In the first presented method, we consider a ground mobile robot equipped with a 2D range finder sensor searching a bounded 2D area without any collision and building a complete 2D map of the area. Furthermore, the first presented map building algorithm is extended to another algorithm for 3D map building.

Direct imaging of a zero-field target skyrmion and its polarity switch in a chiral magnetic nanodisk

A target skyrmion is a flux-closed spin texture that has two-fold degeneracy and is promising as a binary state in next generation universal memories. Although its formation in nanopatterned chiral magnets has been predicted, its observation has remained challenging. Here, we use off-axis electron holography to record images of target skyrmions in a 160-nm-diameter nanodisk of the chiral magnet FeGe. We compare experimental measurements with numerical simulations, demonstrate switching between two stable degenerate target skyrmion ground states that have opposite polarities and rotation senses and discuss the observed switching mechanism.

Coupling Distributed and Symbolic Execution for Natural Language Queries

Building neural networks to query a knowledge base (a table) with natural language is an emerging research topic in deep learning. An executor for table querying typically requires multiple steps of execution because queries may have complicated structures. In previous studies, researchers have developed either fully distributed executors or symbolic executors for table querying. A distributed executor can be trained in an end-to-end fashion, but is weak in terms of execution efficiency and explicit interpretability. A symbolic executor is efficient in execution, but is very difficult to train especially at initial stages. In this paper, we propose to couple distributed and symbolic execution for natural language queries, where the symbolic executor is pretrained with the distributed executor's intermediate execution results in a step-by-step fashion. Experiments show that our approach significantly outperforms both distributed and symbolic executors, exhibiting high accuracy, high learning efficiency, high execution efficiency, and high interpretability.

Deep Active Learning for Dialogue Generation

We propose an online, end-to-end, neural generative conversational model for open-domain dialogue. It is trained using a unique combination of offline two-phase supervised learning and online human-in-the-loop active learning. While most existing research proposes offline supervision or hand-crafted reward functions for online reinforcement, we devise a novel interactive learning mechanism based on hamming-diverse beam search for response generation and one-character user-feedback at each step. Experiments show that our model inherently promotes the generation of semantically relevant and interesting responses, and can be used to train agents with customized personas, moods and conversational styles.

Chunk-Based Bi-Scale Decoder for Neural Machine Translation

In typical neural machine translation~(NMT), the decoder generates a sentence word by word, packing all linguistic granularities in the same time-scale of RNN. In this paper, we propose a new type of decoder for NMT, which splits the decode state into two parts and updates them in two different time-scales. Specifically, we first predict a chunk time-scale state for phrasal modeling, on top of which multiple word time-scale states are generated. In this way, the target sentence is translated hierarchically from chunks to words, with information in different granularities being leveraged. Experiments show that our proposed model significantly improves the translation performance over the state-of-the-art NMT model.

Experimental Realization of Single-shot Nonadiabatic Holonomic Gates in Nuclear Spins

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors. However, all the previous schemes have to use at least two sequentially implemented gates to realize a general one-qubit gate. Based on two recent works, we construct two Hamiltonians and experimentally realized nonadiabatic holonomic gates by a single-shot implementation in a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system. Two noncommuting one-qubit holonomic gates, rotating along $\hat{x}$ and $\hat{z}$ axes respectively, are implemented by evolving a work qubit and an ancillary qubit nonadiabatically following a quantum circuit designed. Using a sequence compiler developed for NMR quantum information processor, we optimize the whole pulse sequence, minimizing the total error of the implementation. Finally, all the nonadiabatic holonomic gates reach high unattenuated experimental fidelities over $98\%$

Context Gates for Neural Machine Translation

In neural machine translation (NMT), generation of a target word depends on both source and target contexts. We find that source contexts have a direct impact on the adequacy of a translation while target contexts affect the fluency. Intuitively, generation of a content word should rely more on the source context and generation of a functional word should rely more on the target context. Due to the lack of effective control over the influence from source and target contexts, conventional NMT tends to yield fluent but inadequate translations. To address this problem, we propose context gates which dynamically control the ratios at which source and target contexts contribute to the generation of target words. In this way, we can enhance both the adequacy and fluency of NMT with more careful control of the information flow from contexts. Experiments show that our approach significantly improves upon a standard attention-based NMT system by +2.3 BLEU points.

An advanced three-axis elliptical hohlraum for indirectly driven inertial confinement fusion

The radiation symmetry and laser-plasma instabilities (LPIs) inside the conventional cylindrical hohlraum configuration are the two daunting challenges on the approach to ignition in indirectly driven inertial confinement fusion. Recently, near-vacuum cylindrical hohlraum (NVCH), octahedral spherical hohlraum (SH) and novel three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) were proposed to mitigate these issues. While the coupling efficiency might still be a critical risk. In this paper, an advanced three-axis elliptical hohlraum (TAEH) is proposed to make a compromise among these hohlraum performance. Preliminary simulations indicate that the TAEH (with a case-to-capsule ratio, CCR=2.8) could provide excellent radiation symmetry during the thorough laser pulse of the high-foot drive, comparable to the ones inside the SH (CCR=5.1) and TACH (CCR=2.2). The filling time of plasma affecting the LPIs is between those of SH and TACH, and about 1.5 times of that in the ignition hohlraum Rev5-CH of NIC and close to the one inside the NVCH (CCR=3.4). In particular, the coupling efficiency is about 22%, 29% and 17% higher than the one inside the NVCH, SH and TACH, respectively. It would be envisioned that the proposed hohlraum configuration merits consideration as an alternative route to indirect-drive ignition, complementary to the traditional cylindrical hohlraum and the proposed recently novel hohlraums.
