A Method for Parsing and Vectorization of Semi-structured Data used in Retrieval Augmented Generation

This paper presents a novel method for parsing and vectorizing semi-structured data to enhance the functionality of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) within Large Language Models (LLMs). We developed a comprehensive pipeline for converting various data formats into .docx, enabling efficient parsing and structured data extraction. The core of our methodology involves the construction of a vector database using Pinecone, which integrates seamlessly with LLMs to provide accurate, context-specific responses, particularly in environmental management and wastewater treatment operations. Through rigorous testing with both English and Chinese texts in diverse document formats, our results demonstrate a marked improvement in the precision and reliability of LLMs outputs. The RAG-enhanced models displayed enhanced ability to generate contextually rich and technically accurate responses, underscoring the potential of vector knowledge bases in significantly boosting the performance of LLMs in specialized domains. This research not only illustrates the effectiveness of our method but also highlights its potential to revolutionize data processing and analysis in environmental sciences, setting a precedent for future advancements in AI-driven applications. Rapid-INR: Storage Efficient CPU-free DNN Training Using Implicit Neural Representation

Implicit Neural Representation (INR) is an innovative approach for representing complex shapes or objects without explicitly defining their geometry or surface structure. Instead, INR represents objects as continuous functions. Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of using neural networks as INR for image compression, showcasing comparable performance to traditional methods such as JPEG. However, INR holds potential for various applications beyond image compression. This paper introduces Rapid-INR, a novel approach that utilizes INR for encoding and compressing images, thereby accelerating neural network training in computer vision tasks. Our methodology involves storing the whole dataset directly in INR format on a GPU, mitigating the significant data communication overhead between the CPU and GPU during training. Additionally, the decoding process from INR to RGB format is highly parallelized and executed on-the-fly. To further enhance compression, we propose iterative and dynamic pruning, as well as layer-wise quantization, building upon previous work. We evaluate our framework on the image classification task, utilizing the ResNet-18 backbone network and three commonly used datasets with varying image sizes. Rapid-INR reduces memory consumption to only about 5% of the original dataset size in RGB format and achieves a maximum 6$\times$ speedup over the PyTorch training pipeline, as well as a maximum 1.2x speedup over the DALI training pipeline, with only a marginal decrease in accuracy. Importantly, Rapid-INR can be readily applied to other computer vision tasks and backbone networks with reasonable engineering efforts. Our implementation code is publicly available at https://github.com/sharc-lab/Rapid-INR.

Assessing Mass Loss and Stellar-to-Halo Mass Ratio of Satellite Galaxies: A Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing Approach Utilizing DECaLS DR8 Data

The galaxy-galaxy lensing technique allows us to measure the subhalo mass of satellite galaxies, studying their mass loss and evolution within galaxy clusters and providing direct observational validation for theories of galaxy formation. In this study, we use the weak gravitational lensing observations from DECaLS DR8, in combination with the redMaPPer galaxy cluster catalog from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data (SDSS) DR8 to accurately measure the dark matter halo mass of satellite galaxies. We confirm a significant increase in the stellar-to-halo mass ratio of satellite galaxies with their halo-centric radius, indicating clear evidence of mass loss due to tidal stripping. Additionally, we find that this mass loss is strongly dependent on the mass of the satellite galaxies, with satellite galaxies above $10^{11}~{\rm M_{\odot}/h}$ experiencing more pronounced mass loss compared to lower mass satellites, reaching 86\% at projected halo-centric radius $0.5R_{\rm 200c}$. The average mass loss rate, when not considering halo-centric radius, displays a U-shaped variation with stellar mass, with galaxies of approximately $4\times10^{10}~{\rm M_{\odot}/h}$ exhibiting the least mass loss, around 60\%. We compare our results with state-of-the-art hydrodynamical numerical simulations and find that the satellite galaxy stellar-to-halo mass ratio in the outskirts of galaxy clusters is higher compared to the predictions of the Illustris-TNG project about factor 5. Furthermore, the Illustris-TNG project's numerical simulations did not predict the observed dependence of satellite galaxy mass loss rate on satellite galaxy mass.

DKiS: Decay weight invertible image steganography with private key

Image steganography, defined as the practice of concealing information within another image, traditionally encounters security challenges when its methods become publicly known or are under attack. To address this, a novel private key-based image steganography technique has been introduced. This approach ensures the security of the hidden information, as access requires a corresponding private key, regardless of the public knowledge of the steganography method. Experimental evidence has been presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method and showcasing its real-world applicability. Furthermore, a critical challenge in the invertible image steganography process has been identified by us: the transfer of non-essential, or `garbage', information from the secret to the host pipeline. To tackle this issue, the decay weight has been introduced to control the information transfer, effectively filtering out irrelevant data and enhancing the performance of image steganography. The code for this technique is publicly accessible at https://github.com/yanghangAI/DKiS, and a practical demonstration can be found at http://yanghang.site/hidekey.

PRIS: Practical robust invertible network for image steganography

Image steganography is a technique of hiding secret information inside another image, so that the secret is not visible to human eyes and can be recovered when needed. Most of the existing image steganography methods have low hiding robustness when the container images affected by distortion. Such as Gaussian noise and lossy compression. This paper proposed PRIS to improve the robustness of image steganography, it based on invertible neural networks, and put two enhance modules before and after the extraction process with a 3-step training strategy. Moreover, rounding error is considered which is always ignored by existing methods, but actually it is unavoidable in practical. A gradient approximation function (GAF) is also proposed to overcome the undifferentiable issue of rounding distortion. Experimental results show that our PRIS outperforms the state-of-the-art robust image steganography method in both robustness and practicability. Codes are available at https://github.com/yanghangAI/PRIS, demonstration of our model in practical at http://yanghang.site/hide/.

A Study of a Loss System with Priorities

The Erlang loss formula, also known as the Erlang B formula, has been known for over a century and has been used in a wide range of applications, from telephony to hospital intensive care unit management. It provides the blocking probability of arriving customers to a loss system involving a finite number of servers without a waiting room. Because of the need to introduce priorities in many services, an extension of the Erlang B formula to the case of a loss system with preemptive priority is valuable and essential. This paper analytically establishes the consistency between the global balance (steady state) equations for a loss system with preemptive priorities and a known result obtained using traffic loss arguments for the same problem. This paper, for the first time, derives this known result directly from the global balance equations based on the relevant multidimensional Markov chain. The paper also addresses the question of whether or not the well-known insensitivity property of the Erlang loss system is also applicable to the case of a loss system with preemptive priorities, provides explanations, and demonstrates through simulations that, except for the blocking probability of the highest priority customers, the blocking probabilities of the other customers are sensitive to the holding time distributions and that a higher variance of the service time distribution leads to a lower blocking probability of the lower priority traffic.

Torsion energy with boundary mean zero condition

Motivated by establishing Neumann Talenti type comparison results, we concern the minimization of the following shape functional under volume constraint: \begin{align*} T(Ω):=\inf\left\{\frac12 \int_Ω |\nabla u|^2\,dx -\int_Ωu\,dx: u\in H^1(Ω),\ \int_{\partial Ω}udσ=0 \right\}. \end{align*} We prove that ball is a local minimizer to $T(\cdot)$ under smooth perturbation, but quite surprisingly, ball is not locally minimal to $T(\cdot)$ under Lipschitz perturbation. In fact, let $P_N$ be the regular polygon in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with $N$ sides and area $π$, then we prove that $T(P_N)$ is a strictly increasing function with respect to $N$ and $\lim_{N\rightarrow \infty}T(P_N)=T(B)$ where $B$ is the unit disk. As another side result, we prove that in dimension bigger than or equal to three, rigidity results of Serrin's seminal overdetermined system is not stable under Dirichlet perturbations, in contrast to the stability of rigidity under Neumann perturbation.

Neutral Hydrogen content of dwarf galaxies in different environments

Environments play an important role in galaxy formation and evolution, particularly in regulating the content of neutral gas. However, current HI surveys have limitations in their depth, which prevents them from adequately studying low HI content galaxies in high-density regions. In this study, we address this issue by employing the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) with extensive integration times to complement the relatively shallow Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) HI survey. This approach allows us to explore the gas content of dwarf galaxies across various environments. We observe a positive relationship between HI mass and stellar mass in dwarf galaxies, with a well-defined upper boundary for HI mass that holds true in both observations and simulations. Furthermore, we find a decrease in the HI-to-stellar mass ratio ($\rm M_{\rm HI}/M_*$) as the density of the environment increases, irrespective of whether it is determined by the proximity to the nearest group or the projected number density. Comparing our observations to simulations, we note a steeper slope in the relationship, indicating a gradual gas-stripping process in the observational data. Additionally, we find that the scaling relation between the $\rm M_{\rm HI}/M_*$ and optical properties can be improved by incorporating galaxy environments.

Scientific Objectives of the Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) Mission

The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. This paper discusses the perspective of advancing these fields using the HUBS telescope.

Global dynamic scaling relations of HI-rich ultra-diffuse galaxies

The baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR), which connects the baryonic mass of galaxies with their circular velocities, has been validated across a wide range of galaxies, from dwarf galaxies to massive galaxies. Recent studies have found that several ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) deviate significantly from the BTFR, indicating a galaxy population with abnormal dynamical properties. However, such studies were still confined within a small sample size. In this study, we used the 100% complete Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) to investigate the BTFR of 88 HI-rich UDGs (HUDGs), which is the largest UDG sample with dynamical information. We found that the HUDGs form a continuous distribution in the BTFR diagram, with high-velocity galaxies consistent with normal dwarf galaxies at 1 $σ$ level, and low-velocity galaxies deviating from the BTFR, in line with that reported in the literature. We point out that the observed deviation may be subject to various selection effects or systemic biases. Nevertheless, we found that the significance of the deviation of HUDGs from the BTFR and TFR are different, i.e., they either deviate from the BTFR or from the TFR. Our result indicates that a high-gas fraction may play an important role in explaining the deviation of HUDGs from BTFR.

The galaxy size to halo spin relation of disk galaxies in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations

In the standard disk galaxy formation model, the sizes of galactic disks are tightly related to the spin parameters $λ$ of their dark matter haloes. The model has been wildly adopted by various semi-analytic galaxy formation models which have been extremely successful to interpret a large body of observational data. However, the size-$λ$ correlation was rarely seen in most modern hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation. In this short paper, we make use of 4 sets of large hydrodynamical simulations to explore the size-spin parameter relation with a large sample of simulated disk galaxies, and compare it with a popular disk galaxy formation model of Mo et al. (1998). Intriguingly, galactic sizes correlate strongly with spin parameters of their dark matter haloes in the simulations developed by the IllustrisTNG collaborations, albeit the relation does not always agree with prediction of MMW98 model over all stellar mass range we examined. There is also a size-spin correlation for the Milky way analogies in the EAGLE simulations, while it is relatively weaker than that of the IllustrisTNG counterparts. For the dwarfs in the simulations from the EAGLE collaboration, there is NULL correlation. We conclude that either the detailed subgrid physics or hydrodynamics solvers account for the size-spin relation, which will be explored in our future work.

Fast predicting the complex nonlinear dynamics of mode-locked fiber laser by a recurrent neural network with prior information feeding

As an imperative method of investigating the internal mechanism of femtosecond lasers, traditional femtosecond laser modeling relies on the split-step Fourier method (SSFM) to iteratively resolve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation suffering from the large computation complexity. To realize inverse design and optimization of femtosecond lasers, numerous simulations of mode-locked fiber lasers with different cavity settings are required further highlighting the time-consuming problem induced by the large computation complexity. Here, a recurrent neural network is proposed to realize fast and accurate femtosecond mode-locked fiber laser modeling for the first time. The generalization over different cavity settings is achieved via our proposed prior information feeding method. With the acceleration of GPU, the mean time of the artificial intelligence (AI) model inferring 500 roundtrips is less than 0.1 s. Even on an identical CPU-based hardware platform, the AI model is still 6 times faster than the SSFM method. The proposed AI-enabled method is promising to become a standard approach to femtosecond laser modeling.

Unsupervised Learning for Combinatorial Optimization with Principled Objective Relaxation

Using machine learning to solve combinatorial optimization (CO) problems is challenging, especially when the data is unlabeled. This work proposes an unsupervised learning framework for CO problems. Our framework follows a standard relaxation-plus-rounding approach and adopts neural networks to parameterize the relaxed solutions so that simple back-propagation can train the model end-to-end. Our key contribution is the observation that if the relaxed objective satisfies entry-wise concavity, a low optimization loss guarantees the quality of the final integral solutions. This observation significantly broadens the applicability of the previous framework inspired by Erdos' probabilistic method. In particular, this observation can guide the design of objective models in applications where the objectives are not given explicitly while requiring being modeled in prior. We evaluate our framework by solving a synthetic graph optimization problem, and two real-world applications including resource allocation in circuit design and approximate computing. Our framework largely outperforms the baselines based on naïve relaxation, reinforcement learning, and Gumbel-softmax tricks.

The single-particle space-momentum angle distribution effect on two-pion HBT correlation with the Coulomb interaction

We calculate the HBT radius Rs for π+ particles with the Coulomb interaction by using the string melting version of a multiphase transport(AMPT) model. We study the relationship between the single-particle space-momentum angle and the particle sources and discuss HBT radii without single-particle space-momentum correlation. Additionally, we study the Coulomb interaction effect on the numerical connection between the single-particle space-momentum angle distribution and the transverse momentum dependence of Rs.

Low-complexity full-field ultrafast nonlinear dynamics prediction by a convolutional feature separation modeling method

The modeling and prediction of the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics in the optical fiber are essential for the studies of laser design, experimental optimization, and other fundamental applications. The traditional propagation modeling method based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) has long been regarded as extremely time-consuming, especially for designing and optimizing experiments. The recurrent neural network (RNN) has been implemented as an accurate intensity prediction tool with reduced complexity and good generalization capability. However, the complexity of long grid input points and the flexibility of neural network structure should be further optimized for broader applications. Here, we propose a convolutional feature separation modeling method to predict full-field ultrafast nonlinear dynamics with low complexity and high flexibility, where the linear effects are firstly modeled by NLSE-derived methods, then a convolutional deep learning method is implemented for nonlinearity modeling. With this method, the temporal relevance of nonlinear effects is substantially shortened, and the parameters and scale of neural networks can be greatly reduced. The running time achieves a 94% reduction versus NLSE and an 87% reduction versus RNN without accuracy deterioration. In addition, the input pulse conditions, including grid point numbers, durations, peak powers, and propagation distance, can be flexibly changed during the predicting process. The results represent a remarkable improvement in the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics prediction and this work also provides novel perspectives of the feature separation modeling method for quickly and flexibly studying the nonlinear characteristics in other fields.

Fast and accurate waveform modeling of long-haul multi-channel optical fiber transmission using a hybrid model-data driven scheme

The modeling of optical wave propagation in optical fiber is a task of fast and accurate solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), and can enable the optical system design, digital signal processing verification and fast waveform calculation. Traditional waveform modeling of full-time and full-frequency information is the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), which has long been regarded as challenging in long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems because it is extremely time-consuming. Here we propose a linear-nonlinear feature decoupling distributed (FDD) waveform modeling scheme to model long-haul WDM fiber channel, where the channel linear effects are modelled by the NLSE-derived model-driven methods and the nonlinear effects are modelled by the data-driven deep learning methods. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme only focuses on one-span fiber distance fitting, and then recursively transmits the model to achieve the required transmission distance. The proposed modeling scheme is demonstrated to have high accuracy, high computing speeds, and robust generalization abilities for different optical launch powers, modulation formats, channel numbers and transmission distances. The total running time of FDD waveform modeling scheme for 41-channel 1040-km fiber transmission is only 3 minutes versus more than 2 hours using SSFM for each input condition, which achieves a 98% reduction in computing time. Considering the multi-round optimization by adjusting system parameters, the complexity reduction is significant. The results represent a remarkable improvement in nonlinear fiber modeling and open up novel perspectives for solution of NLSE-like partial differential equations and optical fiber physics problems.
