Depth Image Upsampling based on Guided Filter with Low Gradient Minimization

In this paper, we present a novel upsampling framework to enhance the spatial resolution of the depth image. In our framework, the upscaling of a low-resolution depth image is guided by a corresponding intensity images, we formulate it as a cost aggregation problem with the guided filter. However, the guided filter does not make full use of the properties of the depth image. Since depth images have quite sparse gradients, it inspires us to regularize the gradients for improving depth upscaling results. Statistics show a special property of depth images, that is, there is a non-ignorable part of pixels whose horizontal or vertical derivatives are equal to $\pm 1$. Considering this special property, we propose a low gradient regularization method which reduces the penalty for horizontal or vertical derivative $\pm1$. The proposed low gradient regularization is integrated with the guided filter into the depth image upsampling method. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach both qualitatively and quantitatively compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

A Robust Local Binary Similarity Pattern for Foreground Object Detection

Accurate and fast extraction of the foreground object is one of the most significant issues to be solved due to its important meaning for object tracking and recognition in video surveillance. Although many foreground object detection methods have been proposed in the recent past, it is still regarded as a tough problem due to illumination variations and dynamic backgrounds challenges. In this paper, we propose a robust foreground object detection method with two aspects of contributions. First, we propose a robust texture operator named Robust Local Binary Similarity Pattern (RLBSP), which shows strong robustness to illumination variations and dynamic backgrounds. Second, a combination of color and texture features are used to characterize pixel representations, which compensate each other to make full use of their own advantages. Comprehensive experiments evaluated on the CDnet 2012 dataset demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods.

Analysis of a Singular Boussinesq Model

Recently, a new singularity formation scenario for the 3D axi-symmetric Euler equation and the 2D inviscid Boussinesq system has been proposed by Hu and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations [15, 16]. As the firrst step to understand the scenario, models with simplified sign-definite Biot-Savart law and forcing have recently been studied in [7, 6, 8, 12, 14, 18]. In this paper, we aim to bring back one of the complications encountered in the original equation - the sign changing kernel in the Biot-Savart law. This makes analysis harder, as there are two competing terms in the fluid velocity integral whose balance determines the regularity properties of the solution. The equation we study here is based on the CKY model introduced in [6]. We prove that finite time blow up persists in a certain range of parameters.

Blow Up Of A Hyperbolic SQG Model

This paper studies of a variation of the hyperbolic blow up scenario suggested by Hou and Luo's recent numerical simulation [12]. In particular, we propose a "hyperbolic" surface quasi-geostrophic equation characterized by a incompressible velocity field with a modified Biot-Savart law. For this model, we will show Finite time blow up for a wide class of initial data.

The binarity of Galactic dwarf stars along with effective temperature and metallicity

The fraction of binary stars (fb) is one of most valuable tool to probe the star formation and evolution of multiple systems in the Galaxy. We focus on the relationship between fb and stellar metallicity ([Fe/H]) by employing the differential radial velocity (DRV) method and the large sample observed by the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Main-sequence stars from A- to K-types in the third data release (DR3) of LAMOST are selected to estimate fb. Contributions to a profile of DRV from radial velocity (RV) error of single stars (σ) and orbital motion of binary stars are evaluated from the profile of DRV. Finally, we employ 365,911 stars with randomly repeating spectral observations to present a detailed analysis of fb and σin the two-dimensional (2D) space of Teff and [Fe/H]. The A-type stars are more likely to be companions in binary star systems than other stars. Furthermore, the reverse correlation between fb and [Fe/H] can be shown statistically, which suggests that fb is a joint function of Teff and [Fe/H]. At the same time, σof the sample for different Teff and [Fe/H] are fitted. Metal-rich cold stars in our sample have the best RV measurement.

Guided Filter based Edge-preserving Image Non-blind Deconvolution

In this work, we propose a new approach for efficient edge-preserving image deconvolution. Our algorithm is based on a novel type of explicit image filter - guided filter. The guided filter can be used as an edge-preserving smoothing operator like the popular bilateral filter, but has better behaviors near edges. We propose an efficient iterative algorithm with the decouple of deblurring and denoising steps in the restoration process. In deblurring step, we proposed two cost function which could be computed with fast Fourier transform efficiently. The solution of the first one is used as the guidance image, and another solution will be filtered in next step. In the denoising step, the guided filter is used with the two obtained images for efficient edge-preserving filtering. Furthermore, we derive a simple and effective method to automatically adjust the regularization parameter at each iteration. We compare our deconvolution algorithm with many competitive deconvolution techniques in terms of ISNR and visual quality.

An Adaptive Parameter Estimation for Guided Filter based Image Deconvolution

Image deconvolution is still to be a challenging ill-posed problem for recovering a clear image from a given blurry image, when the point spread function is known. Although competitive deconvolution methods are numerically impressive and approach theoretical limits, they are becoming more complex, making analysis, and implementation difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the regularization parameter is not easy for successfully solving image deconvolution problems. In this paper, we develop an effective approach for image restoration based on one explicit image filter - guided filter. By applying the decouple of denoising and deblurring techniques to the deconvolution model, we reduce the optimization complexity and achieve a simple but effective algorithm to automatically compute the parameter in each iteration, which is based on Morozov's discrepancy principle. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms many state-of-the-art deconvolution methods in terms of both ISNR and visual quality.

Blowup with vorticity control for a 2D model of the Boussinesq equations

We propose a system of equations with nonlocal flux in two space dimensions which is closely modeled after the 2D Boussinesq equations in a hyperbolic flow scenario. Our equations involve a simplified vorticity stretching term and Biot-Savart law and provide insight into the underlying intrinsic mechanisms of singularity formation. We prove stable, controlled finite time blowup involving upper and lower bounds on the vorticity up to the time of blowup for a wide class of initial data.

Large Range Manipulation of Exciton Species in Monolayer WS2

Unconventional emissions from exciton and trion in monolayer WS2 are studied by photoexcitation. Excited by 532nm laser beam, the carrier species in the monolayer WS2 are affected by the excess electrons escaping from photoionization of donor impurity, the concentration of which varies with different locations of the sample. Simply increasing the excitation power at room temperature, the excess electron and thus the intensity ratio of excited trion and exciton can be continuously tuned over a large range from 0.1 to 7.7. Furthermore, this intensity ratio can also be manipulated by varying temperature. However, in this way the resonance energy of the exciton and trion show red-shifts with increasing temperature due to electron-phonon coupling. The binding energy of the trion is determined to be ~23meV and independent to temperature, indicating strong Coulomb interaction of carriers in such 2D materials.

Local Well-posedness of A Non-local Burgers Equation

In this paper, we explore a nonlocal inviscid Burgers equation. Fixing a parameter $h$, we prove existence and uniqueness of the local solution of the equation $\InviscidBurgersNonlocal{u}$ with periodic initial condition. We also explore the blow up properties of solutions to these kinds of equations with given periodic initial data, and show that there exists solutions that blow up in finite time and solutions that are globally regular. This contrasts with the classical inviscid Burgers equation, for which all non-constant smooth periodic initial data lead to finite time blow up. Finally, we present results of simulations to illustrate our findings.
