Quantum Phase Space Symmetry and Sterile Neutrinos

On one hand, the concept of Quantum Phase Space which is compatible with the uncertainty principle has been considered recently. It has also been shown that a natural symmetry that can be associated with this quantum phase space is the symmetry corresponding to Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs). On the other hand, sterile neutrinos are hypothetical particles that are expected to be important for the understanding of physics beyond the current standard model of particle physics. The existence of these particles are suggested both from theoretical and experimental sides. In this work, the objective is to discuss about the symmetry of quantum phase space corresponding to the LCT group and its relation to the possible existence of sterile neutrinos. It is shown that the spin representation of the LCT group associated to the quantum phase, for a signature (1, 4), suggests the existence of sterile neutrinos and lead to a new way for describing them. The mathematical formalism developed in this work provides a new framework for the study of neutrinos physics.

Highlighting relations between Wave-particle duality, Uncertainty principle, Phase space and Microstates

Wave-particle duality is often considered as the modern answer to the problem of the nature of light after more than 2000 years of questioning. It is also the answer given by quantum physics concerning the nature of matter particles and any other radiations. The main objective of this work is to analyze the relations that are existing between this concept of wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle and the concepts of phase space and microstates considered in statistical mechanics. It is mainly highlighted that while the concepts of phase space and microstates were already introduced in classical physics before the discovery of the wave-particle duality, a correct understanding of them cannot be achieved without the use of the concept of quantum phase space and phase space representation of quantum mechanics which are directly related to the uncertainty principle. The possibility of using these concepts of quantum phase space and phase space representations of quantum mechanics to help in a deeper description of the wave-particle duality and in the study of some current issues related to foundational problems of quantum mechanics like quantum decoherence and the measurement problem is also discussed.

Quantum and Relativistic corrections to Maxwell-Boltzmann ideal gas model from a Quantum Phase Space approach

The quantum corrections related to the ideal gas model that are often considered are those which are related to the particles nature: bosons or fermions. These corrections lead respectively to the Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. However, in this work, other kinds of corrections which are related to the quantum nature of phase space are considered. These corrections are introduced as improvement in the expression of the partition function of an ideal gas. Then corrected thermodynamics properties of the gas are deduced. Both the non-relativistic quantum and relativistic quantum cases are considered. It is shown that the corrections in the non-relativistic quantum case may be particularly useful to describe the deviation from classical behavior of a Maxwell-Boltzmann gas at low temperature and in confined space. These corrections can be considered as including the description of quantum size and shape effects. For the relativistic quantum case, the corrections could be relevant for confined space and when the thermal energy of each particle is comparable to their rest energy. The corrections appear mainly as modifications in the thermodynamic equation of state and in the expressions of the partition function and thermodynamic functions like entropy, internal energy, and free energy. Classical expressions are obtained as asymptotic limits.

Linear Canonical Transformations in Relativistic Quantum Physics

Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs) are known in signal processing and optics as the generalization of certain useful integral transforms. In quantum theory, they can be identified as the linear transformations which keep invariant the canonical commutation relations characterizing the coordinates and momenta operators. In this work, the possibility of considering LCTs to be the elements of a symmetry group for relativistic quantum physics is studied using the principle of covariance. It is established that Lorentz transformations and multidimensional Fourier transforms are particular cases of LCTs and some of the main symmetry groups currently considered in relativistic theories can be obtained from the contractions of LCTs groups. It is also shown that a link can be established between a spinorial representation of LCTs and some properties of elementary fermions. This link leads to a classification which suggests the existence of sterile neutrinos and the possibility of describing a generation of fermions with a single field. Some possible applications of the obtained results are discussed. These results may, in particular, help in the establishment of a unified theory of fundamental interactions. Intuitively, LCTs correspond to linear combinations of energy-momentum and spacetime compatible with the principle of covariance.

Invariant quadratic operators associated with Linear Canonical Transformations and their eigenstates

The main purpose of this work is to identify invariant quadratic operators associated with Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs) which could play important roles in physics. LCTs are considered in many fields. In quantum theory, they can be identified with linear transformations which keep invariant the Canonical Commutation Relations (CCRs). In this work, LCTs corresponding to a general pseudo-Euclidian space are considered and related to a phase space representation of quantum theory. Explicit calculations are firstly performed for the monodimensional case to identify the corresponding LCT-invariant quadratic operators then multidimensional generalizations of the obtained results are deduced. The eigenstates of these operators are also identified. A first kind of LCT-invariant operator is a second order polynomial of the coordinates and momenta operators and is a generalization of reduced momentum dispersion operator. The coefficients of this polynomial depend on the mean values and the statistical variances-covariances of the coordinates and momenta operators themselves. It is shown that these statistical variances-covariances can be related with thermodynamic variables. Two other LCT-invariant quadratic operators, which can be considered as the number operators of some quasipartciles, are also identified: the first one is a number operator of bosonic type quasiparticles and the second one corresponds to fermionic type. This fermionic LCT-invariant quadratic operator is directly related to a spin representation of LCTs. It is shown explicitly, in the case of a pentadimensional theory, that the eigenstates of this operator can be considered as basic quantum states of elementary fermions. A classification of the fundamental fermions, compatible with the Standard model of particle physics, is established from a classification of these states.

Sterile neutrinos existence suggested from LCT covariance

Sterile neutrinos are known to be hypothetical neutrinos which do not interact via the fundamental interactions described within the Standard Model of Particles Physics i.e. electroweak and strong interactions. They are expected to be important for the understanding of the physics beyond the current Standard Model. In the present work, it is shown that the existence of these particles can be suggested from covariance principle using a covariance group formed by Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs) associated to a pentadimensional pseudo-Euclidian space. It is established that a spin representation of the LCT group gives a particle classification, applicable to the three families of leptons and quarks, which leads to the prediction of the existence of three sterile neutrinos and their antiparticles

Study on a Spinorial Representation of Linear Canonical Transformations

This work is a continuation of our previous works concerning linear canonical transformations and phase space representation of quantum theory. It is mainly focused on the description of an approach which allows to establish spinorial representation of linear canonical transformations. This description is started with the presentation of a suitable parameterization of linear canonical transformations which permits to represent them with special pseudo-orthogonal transformations in an operator space. Then the establishment of the spinorial representation is deduced using the well-known relation existing between special pseudo-orthogonal and spin groups. The cases of one dimension and general multidimensional theory are both studied.

Gaussian as test functions in Operator Valued Distribution formulation of QED

As shown by Epstein and Glaser, the operator valued distribution (OPVD) formalism permits to obtain a non-standard regularization scheme which leads to a divergences-free quantum field theory. We show, with the example of a scalar quantum electrodynamics theory, that Gaussian functions may be used as test functions in this approach. After a short recall about the OPVD formalism in 3+1-dimensions, Gaussian functions and Harmonic Hermite-Gaussian functions are used as test functions. The vacuum fluctuation, Feynman propagators and a study about loop convergence with the example of the tadpole diagram are given. The approach is extended to Quantum Electrodynamics. Calculations concerning triangle anomaly and Ward-Takahashi identity are performed in the framework of the method.

Properties of Elementary Fermions of the Standard Model deduced from Linear Canonical Transformations

This paper is a continuation of our works concerning Linear Canonical Transformations (LCT) and Phase Space Representation of Quantum Theory. The purpose is to study the spinorial representation of some particular LCT called Isodispersion LCT (ILCT) and to deduce a relation between them and the elementary fermions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. After giving the definition of ILCT for the case of a general pseudo-Euclidean space and constructing their spinorial representation, we consider the particular case of a pentadimensional space with signature (1, 4). We then deduce a classification of quarks, leptons and their antiparticles according to the values of electric charge, weak hypercharge, weak isospin and colors after the introduction of appropriate operators defined from the generators of the Clifford Algebra corresponding to the ILCT spinorial representation. It is established that the electric charge is the sum of four terms, the weak hypercharge of five terms and the weak isospin of two terms.Existence of sterile neutrinos is suggested and the possibility of describing a fermions generation with a single field is discussed.

Properties of Phase Space Wavefunctions and Eigenvalue Equation of Momentum Dispersion Operator

This paper is a continuation of our previous works about coordinate, momentum, dispersion operators and phase space representation of quantum mechanics. It concerns a study on the properties of wavefunctions in the phase space representation and the momentum dispersion operator, its representations and eigenvalue equation. After the recall of some results from our previous papers, we give most of the main properties of the phase space wavefunctions and consider some examples of them. Then we establish the eigenvalue equation for the differential operator corresponding to the momentum dispersion operator in the phase space representation. It is shown in particular that any phase space wavefunction is solution of this equation.

Coordinate, Momentum and Dispersion operators in Phase space representation

The aim of this paper is to present a study on the representations of coordinate, momentum and dispersion operators in the framework of a phase space representation of quantum mechanics that we have introduced and studied in previous works. We begin in the introduction section with a recall about the concept of representation of operators on wave function spaces. Then, we show that in the case of the phase space representation the coordinate and momentum operators can be represented either with differential operators or with matrices. The explicit expressions of both the differential operators and matrices representations are established. Multidimensional generalization of the obtained results are performed and phase space representation of dispersion operators are given.

Study on linear canonical transformation in a framework of a phase space representation of quantum mechanics

We present a study on linear canonical transformation in the framework of a phase space representation of quantum mechanics that we have introduced in our previous work [1]. We begin with a brief recall about the so called phase space representation. We give the definition of linear canonical transformation with the transformation law of coordinate and momentum operators. We establish successively the transformation laws of mean values, dispersions, basis state and wave functions. Then we introduce the concept of isodispersion linear canonical transformation.

Two definitions of fractional derivatives of power functions

We consider the set of power functions defined on the set of positive real number, and their linear combinations. After recalling some properties of the gamma function, we give two general definitions of derivatives of positive and negative integers, positive and negative fractional orders.Properties of linearity and commutativity are studied and the notions of semi-equality,semi-linearity and semi-commutativity are introduced. Our approach gives a unified definition of the common derivatives and integrals and their generalization.
