Moderate deviations for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices

We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.

Moments of recurrence times for Markov chains

We consider moments of the return times (or first hitting times) in a discrete time discrete space Markov chain. It is classical that the finiteness of the first moment of a return time of one state implies the finiteness of the first moment of the first return time of any other state. We extend this statement to moments with respect to a function $f$, where $f$ satisfies a certain, best possible condition. This generalizes results of K. L. Chung (1954) who considered the functions $f(n)=n^p$ and wondered "[...] what property of the power $n^p$ lies behind this theorem [...]" (see Chung (1967), p. 70). We exhibit that exactly the functions that do not increase exponentially -- neither globally nor locally -- fulfill the above statement.

Moderate deviations via cumulants

The purpose of the present paper is to establish moderate deviation principles for a rather general class of random variables fulfilling certain bounds of the cumulants. We apply a celebrated lemma of the theory of large deviations probabilities due to Rudzkis, Saulis and Statulevicius. The examples of random objects we treat include dependency graphs, subgraph-counting statistics in Erdős-Rényi random graphs and $U$-statistics. Moreover, we prove moderate deviation principles for certain statistics appearing in random matrix theory, namely characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices as well as the number of particles in a growing box of random determinantal point processes like the number of eigenvalues in the GUE or the number of points in Airy, Bessel, and $\sin$ random point fields.
