Entanglement entropy, Monte Carlo event generators, and soft gluons DIScovery

We study entropy production in Deep Inelastic Scattering using Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the dominant contribution to entropy is due to soft gluons. This contribution is usually neglected in standard Monte Carlo approaches, since it does not affect hadronic spectra. However, it is relevant for entropy and multiplicity distributions, as we demonstrate with explicit calculations. We further show that as one includes soft gluons, making the Monte Carlo parton distributions closer to inclusive PDFs, the resulting entropy starts to grow with decreasing x. This provides further evidence that the bulk of the measured entropy originates from initial-state effects.

Humboldt Highway II -- computer cluster on renewable energies

In August 2023, IT experts and scientists came together for a workshop to discuss the possibilities of building a computer cluster fully on renewable energies, as a test-case at Havana University in Cuba. The discussion covered the scientific needs for a computer cluster for particle physics at the InSTEC institute at Havana University, the possibilities to use solar energy, new developments in computing technologies, and computer cluster operation as well as operational needs for computing in particle physics. This computer cluster on renewable energies at the InSTEC institute is seen as a prototype for a large-scale computer cluster on renewable energies for scientific computing in the Caribbean, hosted in Cuba. The project is called "Humboldt Highway", to remember Alexander von Humboldt's achievements in bringing cultures of the American and European continents closer together by exchange and travel. In this spirit, we propose a project that enables and intensifies the scientific exchange between research laboratories and universities in Europe and the Caribbean, in particular Cuba.

Comparison of CMS measurements with predictions at NLO applying the Parton Branching Method and PYTHIA

In August 2023, more than 30 students joined the Special Remote DESY summer-school to work on projects of importance for LHC experiments. In a dedicated initiative, analyses that had not been incorporated into the RIVET package were implemented and verified. Here, a brief description of the accomplished work is given, and a comparison of the measurements with predictions obtained from matched standard parton shower Monte Carlo event generators as well as with those obtained from Parton-Branching TMDs with corresponding parton showers are presented.

Drell Yan production in the parton branching method and POWHEG matching

As part of the DESY summer student program 2021, transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions obtained from the Parton Branching (PB) method were combined with next-to-leading-order (NLO) using the POWHEG method. Computations of the resulting Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectrum were performed. A good agreement of the theoretical predictions with the measurement performed by the CMS experiment at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is found, at low and intermediate DY $p_{\rm T}$. The new scale choice option for the matching has been included in the CASCADE event generator.

Application of TMD parton showers obtained with the Parton Branching approach to Drell Yan + jets production

Calculations of Drell-Yan (DY) production at next-to-leading (NLO) order have been combined with Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) distributions obtained with the Parton Branching (PB). The predictions show a remarkable agreement with DY measurement from E605 experiment, consistent with previous results we obtained for R209, PHENIX, CMS and ATLAS experiments. We also present predictions for Z+jet measurements showing the importance of TMD parton shower contributions to the jet multiplicity. We show that PB-TMD parton density and the corresponding PB-TMD parton shower can be combined with leading-order (LO) matrix element using the newly developed TMD merging algorithm to obtain a very good description of measurements over a wide kinematic range.

Extending parton branching TMDs to small $x$

We explore the possibility to include small-$x$ dynamics effects in the parton branching (PB) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. To this end, we first revisit the PB method at leading order, presenting a new fit to inclusive-DIS precision data, and performing a numerical study of the dynamic soft-gluon resolution scale. Next we investigate the effects of modified CCFM kernels, including both Sudakov and non-Sudakov form factors.

TMD parton distributions from parton showers

We present the determination of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions from Monte Carlo parton showers. We investigate the effective TMD distributions obtained from the PYTHIA8 and HERWIG6 parton showers and compare them to the TMD distributions determined within the Parton Branching method.

Monte Carlo event generators for high energy particle physics event simulation

Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are the indispensable workhorses of particle physics, bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and first-principles calculations on the one hand, and the complex detector signatures and data of the experimental community on the other hand. All collider physics experiments are dependent on simulated events by MCEG codes such as Herwig, Pythia, Sherpa, POWHEG, and MG5_aMC@NLO to design and tune their detectors and analysis strategies. The development of MCEGs is overwhelmingly driven by a vibrant community of academics at European Universities, who also train the next generations of particle phenomenologists. The new challenges posed by possible future collider-based experiments and the fact that the first analyses at Run II of the LHC are now frequently limited by theory uncertainties urge the community to invest into further theoretical and technical improvements of these essential tools. In this short contribution to the European Strategy Update, we briefly review the state of the art, and the further developments that will be needed to meet the challenges of the next generation.

Investigation of the energy dependence of the pT0 parameter in the Pythia 8 Monte Carlo event generator

By using predictions from the Pythia 8 Monte Carlo event generator, we determine the energy-dependent turn-over values (pT0) of the partonic cross section for the simulation of multiparton interactions. Since the observed energy dependence of the pT0 values is not well described by a power-law function, we introduce an additional energy-dependent term, to better describe the experimental observations in the energy range sqrt(s) = 0.3-13 TeV. We obtain a similar level of agreement for predictions using various parton densities.

Calculations with off-shell matrix elements, TMD parton densities and TMD parton showers

A new calculation using off-shell matrix elements with TMD parton densities supplemented with a newly developed initial state TMD parton shower is described. The calculation is based on the KaTie package for an automated calculation of the partonic process in high-energy factorization, making use of TMD parton densities implemented in TMDlib. The partonic events are stored in an LHE file, similar to the conventional LHE files, but now containing the transverse momenta of the initial partons. The LHE files are read in by the CASCADE package for the full TMD parton shower, final state shower and hadronization from PYTHIA where events in HEPMC format are produced. We have determined a full set of TMD parton densities and developed an initial state TMD parton shower, including all flavors following the TMD distribution. As an example of application we have calculated the azimuthal de-correlation of high pt dijets as measured at the LHC and found very good agreement with the measurement when including initial state TMD parton showers together with conventional final state parton showers and hadronization.

Higgs production via gluon fusion from kT-factorisation

Theoretical studies of Higgs production via gluon fusion are frequently carried out in the limit where the top quark mass is much larger than the Higgs mass, an approximation which reduces the top quark loop to an effective vertex. We present a numerical analysis of the error thus introduced by performing a Monte Carlo calculation for gg->h in kT-factorisation, using the parton shower generator CASCADE. We proceed to compare CASCADE to the collinear Monte Carlos PYTHIA, MC@NLO and POWHEG. We study the dependence of parton radiation on the resummation of high-energy corrections taken into account by kT-factorisation, and its influence on predictions for the Higgs pT spectrum.

A method for tuning parameters of Monte Carlo generators and a its application to the determination of the unintegrated gluon density

A method for tuning parameters in Monte Carlo generators is described and applied to a specific case. The method works in the following way: each observable is generated several times using different values of the parameters to be tuned. The output is then approximated by some analytic form to describe the dependence of the observables on the parameters. This approximation is used to find the values of the parameter that give the best description of the experimental data. This results in significantly faster fitting compared to an approach in which the generator is called iteratively. As an application, we employ this method to fit the parameters of the unintegrated gluon density used in the CASCADE Monte Carlo generator, using inclusive deep inelastic data measured by the H1 Collaboration. We discuss the results of the fit, its limitations, and its strong points.

Saturation effects in final states due to CCFM with absorptive boundary

We apply the absorptive boundary prescription to include saturation effects in CCFM evolution equation. We are in particular interested in saturation effects in exclusive processes which can be studied using Monte Carlo event generator CASCADE. We calculate cross section for three-jet production and distribution of charged hadrons.

Valence quarks and $k_T$ factorisation

We study in the $k_T$ factorisation framework jet production at LHC energies. In particular we are interested in valence quark and gluon initiated jets. The calculation of the relevant hard matrix element is presented. A CCFM like evolutionequation for valence quark distribution is solved and the cross section for valence quark and gluon initiated process is calculated using Monte Carlo event generator CASCADE.
