Diffusive mixing of periodic wave trains in reaction-diffusion systems

We consider reaction-diffusion systems on the infinite line that exhibit a family of spectrally stable spatially periodic wave trains $u_0(kx-\om t;k)$ that are parameterized by the wave number $k$. We prove stable diffusive mixing of the asymptotic states $u_0(k x+ϕ_{\pm};k)$ as $x\ra \pm\infty$ with different phases $ϕ_-\neqϕ_+$ at infinity for solutions that initially converge to these states as $x\ra \pm\infty$. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis, renormalization theory, and a rigorous decomposition of the perturbations of these wave solutions into a phase mode, which shows diffusive behavior, and an exponentially damped remainder. Depending on the dispersion relation, the asymptotic states mix linearly with a Gaussian profile at lowest order or with a nonsymmetric non-Gaussian profile given by Burgers equation, which is the amplitude equation of the diffusive modes in the case of a nontrivial dispersion relation.

Perturbation theory for plasmonic eigenvalues

We develop a perturbative approach for calculating, within the quasistatic approximation, the shift of surface resonances in response to a deformation of a dielectric volume. Our strategy is based on the conversion of the homogeneous system for the potential which determines the plasmonic eigenvalues into an inhomogeneous system for the potential's derivative with respect to the deformation strength, and on the exploitation of the corresponding compatibility condition. The resulting general expression for the first-order shift is verified for two explicitly solvable cases, and for a realistic example of a deformed nanosphere. It can be used for scanning the huge parameter space of possible shape fluctuations with only quite small computational effort.

Coupled Mode Equations and Gap Solitons for the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a non-separable periodic potential

Gap solitons near a band edge of a spatially periodic nonlinear PDE can be formally approximated by solutions of Coupled Mode Equations (CMEs). Here we study this approximation for the case of the 2D Periodic Nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with a non-separable potential of finite contrast. We show that unlike in the case of separable potentials [T. Dohnal, D. Pelinovsky, and G. Schneider, J. Nonlin. Sci. {\bf 19}, 95--131 (2009)] the CME derivation has to be carried out in Bloch rather than physical coordinates. Using the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction we then give a rigorous justification of the CMEs as an asymptotic model for reversible non-degenerate gap solitons and even potentials and provide $H^s$ estimates for this approximation. The results are confirmed by numerical examples including some new families of CMEs and gap solitons absent for separable potentials.

Statistics for surface modes of nanoparticles with shape fluctuations

We develop a numerical method for approximating the surface modes of sphere-like nanoparticles in the quasi-static limit, based on an expansion of (the angular part of) the potentials into spherical harmonics. Comparisons of the results obtained in this manner with exact solutions and with a perturbation ansatz prove that the scheme is accurate if the shape deviations from a sphere are not too large. The method allows fast calculations for large numbers of particles, and thus to obtain statistics for nanoparticles with random shape fluctuations. As an application we present some statistics for the distribution of resonances, polariziabilities, and dipole axes for particles with random perturbations.

An integral boundary layer equation for film flow over inclined wavy bottoms

We study the flow of an incompressible liquid film down a wavy incline. Applying a Galerkin method with only one ansatz function to the Navier-Stokes equations we derive a second order weighted residual integral boundary layer equation, which in particular may be used to describe eddies in the troughs of the wavy bottom. We present numerical results which show that our model is qualitatively and quantitatively accurate in wide ranges of parameters, and we use the model to study some new phenomena, for instance the occurrence of a short wave instability for laminar flows which does not exist over flat bottom.

Stable transport of information near essentially unstable localized structures

When the steady states at infinity become unstable through a pattern forming bifurcation, a travelling wave may bifurcate into a modulated front which is time-periodic in a moving frame. This scenario has been studied by B.Sandstede and A.Scheel for a class of reaction-diffusion systems on the real line. Under general assumptions, they showed that the modulated fronts exist and are spectrally stable near the bifurcation point. Here we consider a model problem for which we can prove the nonlinear stability of these solutions with respect to small localized perturbations. This result does not follow from the spectral stability, because the linearized operator around the modulated front has essential spectrum up to the imaginary axis. The analysis is illustrated by numerical simulations.
