Probing the small-$x$ nuclear gluon distributions with isolated photons at forward rapidities in p+Pb collisions at the LHC

Inclusive direct photon production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC is studied within the NLO perturbative QCD. Our aim is to quantify the dominant $x$ regions probed at different rapidities and to identify the best conditions for testing the nuclear gluon parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at small $x$. A comparison to the inclusive pion production reveals that from these two processes the photons carry more sensitivity to the small-$x$ partons and that this sensitivity can be further increased by imposing an isolation cut for the photon events. The details of the isolation criteria, however, seem to make only a small difference to the studied $x$ sensitivity and have practically no effect on the expected nuclear modifications. We consider also the yield asymmetry between forward and backward rapidities which can be used to probe the nPDFs irrespectively of whether an accurate p+p baseline is available.

Nuclear PDFs in the beginning of the LHC era

The status of the global fits of nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs) is reviewed. In addition to comparing the contemporary analyses of nPDFs, difficulties and controversies posed by the neutrino-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering data is overviewed. At the end, the first dijet data from the LHC proton+lead collisions is briefly discussed.

Confronting current NLO parton fragmentation functions with inclusive charged-particle spectra at hadron colliders

The inclusive spectra of charged particles measured at high transverse momenta ($p_T\gtrsim$2GeV/c) in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions in the range of center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=200-7000$GeV are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations using seven recent sets of parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs). Accounting for the uncertainties in the scale choices and in the parton distribution functions, we find that most of the theoretical predictions tend to overpredict the measured LHC and Tevatron cross sections by up to a factor of two. We identify the currently too-hard gluon-to-hadron FFs as the probable source of the problem, and justify the need to refit the FFs using the available LHC and Tevatron data in a region of transverse momenta, $p_T\gtrsim$10GeV/c, which is supposedly free from additional non-perturbative contributions and where the scale uncertainty is only modest.

Constraining nPDFs with inclusive pions and direct photons at forward rapidities in p+Pb collisions at the LHC

In this talk, we present NLO pQCD predictions for inclusive pion and direct photon nuclear modifications in p+Pb collisions at mid- and forward rapidities at the LHC. In addition to the minimum bias predictions, we also address the centrality dependence with spatially dependent nuclear PDFs. To understand which regions of the nuclear momentum fraction $x_2$ these observables predominantly probe, we present also the underlying $x_2$ distributions at different rapidities. We are led to conclude that the isolated photons at forward rapidities are more sensitive to the small-$x_2$ dynamics than the inclusive pions.

Centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive pion and prompt photon production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC with EPS09s nPDFs

The centrality dependencies of the inclusive neutral pion and prompt photon nuclear modification factors for p+Pb collisions at the LHC are studied using a spatially dependent set of nuclear PDFs, EPS09s. The calculations are performed at mid- and forward rapidities searching for an observable which would optimally probe the spatial dependence of the nuclear PDFs. In addition, we discuss to which $x$ values of the nucleus the different observables are sensitive.

A perturbative QCD study of dijets in p+Pb collisions at the LHC

Inspired by the recent measurements of the CMS collaboration, we report a QCD study of dijet production in proton+lead collisions at the LHC involving large-transverse-momentum jets, $p_T \gtrsim 100$ GeV. Examining the inherent uncertainties of the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and their sensitivity to the free proton parton distributions (PDFs), we observe a rather small, typically much less than 5% clearance for the shape of the dijet rapidity distribution within approximately 1.5 units around the midrapidity. Even a more stable observable is the ratio between the yields in the positive and negative dijet rapidity, for which the baseline uncertainty can be made negligible by imposing a symmetric jet rapidity acceptance. Both observables prove sensitive to the nuclear modifications of the gluon distributions, the corresponding uncertainties clearly exceeding the estimated baseline uncertainties from the free-proton PDFs and scale dependence. From a theoretical point of view, these observables are therefore very suitable for testing the validity of the collinear factorization and have a high potential to provide precision constraints for the nuclear PDFs.

Agreement of Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering Data with Global Fits of Parton Distributions

The compatibility of neutrino-nucleus deep inelastic scattering data within the universal, factorizable nuclear parton distribution functions has been studied independently by several groups in the past few years. The conclusions are contradictory, ranging from a violation of the universality up to a good agreement, most of the controversy originating from the use of the neutrino-nucleus data from the NuTeV Collaboration. Here, we pay attention to non-negligible differences in the absolute normalization between different neutrino data sets. We find that such variations are large enough to prevent a tensionless fit to all data simultaneously and could therefore misleadingly point towards nonuniversal nuclear effects. We propose a concrete method to deal with the absolute normalization and show that an agreement between independent neutrino data sets is established.

Neutrino-nucleus DIS data and their consistency with nuclear PDFs

In this talk, we discuss the compatibility of different deeply inelastic neutrino-nucleus data sets and the universal nuclear PDFs. This is an issue that has lately been investigated by different groups but the conclusions have been surprisingly contradictory. While some studies have found a good overall agreement between the nuclear PDFs and the neutrino data, others have claimed for an incompatibility. Here, we demonstrate that the independent neutrino data sets from NuTeV, CHORUS and CDHSW collaborations differ in the absolute overall normalization and that it is not possible to accurately reproduce all the data simultaneously with a single set of PDFs. Our strategy to overcome this difficulty and allow a consistent use of all neutrino data in global PDF analyses is to normalize the data by the integrated cross-sections thereby cancelling possible inaccuracies in the absolute normalization. Indeed, this brings all data to a surprisingly good mutual agreement underscoring the x-dependence of the nuclear modifications in a model-independent way. The consistency of these data with the present nuclear PDFs is verified by introducing a method to test the effect of a new data set in an existing global fit that performed a Hessian error analysis.

Nuclear PDFs from the LHeC perspective

We study the prospects for constraining the nuclear parton distribution functions by small-x deep inelastic scattering. Performing a global fit of nuclear parton distribution functions including a sample of pseudodata representing expected measurements at the planned LHeC collider, we demonstrate that the accuracy of the present nuclear parton distributions could be be improved substantially. We also discuss the impact of flavour-tagged data.

Centrality dependence of inclusive prompt photon production in d+Au, Au+Au, p+Pb, and Pb+Pb collisions

We calculate the centrality dependence of the midrapidity nuclear modification for inclusive prompt photon production in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at RHIC and in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Our results, using the recent spatially dependent nuclear PDF set EPS09s, are consistent with the existing high-pT data from the PHENIX and CMS collaborations. The good agreement even in the case of nucleus+nucleus collisions suggests that the high-pT direct photon production is not significantly altered by the strongly interacting medium produced in such collisions. We find the centrality dependence of the nuclear modifications generally rather weak but perhaps measurable at low pT.

Inclusive prompt photon production in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC

Nuclear modification factors of inclusive prompt photon production in d-Au collisions at RHIC and p-Pb collisions at the LHC are provided at different rapidities. The calculations are performed at NLO accuracy using the EPS09 NLO nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and their error sets. The results are compared to the ones obtained with the nDS and HKN07 NLO nPDFs, and to the corresponding nuclear modification factors of neutral pion production in these collisions. The sensitivity of these results to the scale choice is also investigated. Interestingly, the predictions using the different nPDF sets differ from each other to the extent that this observable can be expected to become very useful for probing nPDFs over a wide range of Bjorken-x. In order to obtain a perturbative QCD baseline in heavy-ion collisions, calculations are carried out for minimum bias Au-Au collisions at RHIC and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We also estimate the maximal possible suppression which the produced QCD matter can be expected to have on inclusive prompt photon production due to the quenching of the fragmentation component. The nuclear modification factor for prompt photon production is thus suggested to be used for gauging both the cold and the hot nuclear matter effects on other hard processes which are expected to be affected by quark-gluon plasma formation, such as large-pT hadron and jet production.

Constraints for the nuclear parton distributions from Z and W production at the LHC

The LHC is foreseen to finally bring also the nuclear collisions to the TeV scale thereby providing new possibilities for physics studies, in particular related to the electro-weak sector of the Standard Model. We study here the Z and W production in proton-lead and lead-lead collisions at the LHC, concentrating on the prospects of testing the factorization and constraining the nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Especially, we find that the rapidity asymmetries in proton-nucleus collisions, arising from the differences in the PDFs between the colliding objects, provide a decisive advantage in comparison to the rapidity-symmetric nucleus-nucleus case. We comment on how such studies will help to improve our knowledge of the nuclear PDFs.

The present status of the EPS nuclear PDFs

The recent global analyses of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) lend support to the validity of the factorization theorem of QCD in high-energy processes involving bound nucleons. With a special attention on our latest global analysis EPS09, we review the recent developements in the domain of nuclear PDFs.

Consistency of neutrino DIS and the present parton distribution functions

We study the nuclear effects in the neutrino\anti-neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) by comparing the NuTeV, CDHSW, and CHORUS cross-sections from Iron and Lead targets to the predictions derived from the latest parton distribution functions (PDFs). The nuclear modifications found seem to display agreement with those in charged lepton DIS. Our study thus lends support to the consistency of employing neutrino data in global fits of PDFs.

Compatibility of neutrino DIS data and global analyses of parton distribution functions

Neutrino\antineutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data provide useful constrains for the flavor decomposition in global fits of parton distribution functions (PDF). The smallness of the cross-sections requires the use of nuclear targets in the experimental setup. Understanding the nuclear corrections is, for this reason, of utmost importance for a precise determination of the PDFs. Here, we explore the nuclear effects in the neutrino\antineutrino-nucleon DIS by comparing the NuTeV, CDHSW, and CHORUS cross-sections to the predictions derived from the latest parton distribution functions and their nuclear modifications. We obtain a good description of these data and find no apparent disagreement between the nuclear effects in neutrino DIS and those in charged lepton DIS. These results also indicate that further improvements in the knowledge of the nuclear PDFs could be obtained by a more extensive use of these sets of neutrino data.

EPS09 - Nuclear PDFs and Their Uncertainties at NLO

In this talk, we present our recent next-to-leading order (NLO) nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), which we call EPS09. As an extension to earlier NLO analyses, we supplement the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan dilepton data by inclusive midrapidity pion measurements from RHIC in order to reduce the otherwize large freedom in the nuclear gluon densities. Our Hessian-type error analysis leading to a collection of nPDF error sets, is the first of its kind among the nPDF analyses.

Global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions at leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD

This is the introductory part of my PhD thesis which consists of two parts, the separate introduction and four published articles. The introduction begins by a technically detailed description of the DGLAP evolution and the fast numerical solving method for the DGLAP equations, which has been used in the numerical works of the published articles of this thesis. A write-up of the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations for the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production cross-sections is also included. The formalism of the inclusive single hadron production at NLO is described as well, although less rigorously. The introductory part ends with a discussion of the global QCD analyses in general, with a special attention paid to the major work of this thesis, the NLO analysis of nuclear parton densities and their uncertainties.
