Interplay of exchange and spin-conserving scattering processes in a ferromagnetic two-sublattice system

In magnetic alloys or hybrid systems formed by molecular magnets coupled to a magnetic substrate, the exchange interaction leads to fast spin dynamics after excitation. We investigate the electronic charge and spin dynamics due to the exchange interaction in a two-sublattice system with antiferromagnetic coupling. We employ a simplified model for a ferrimagnetic alloy as a coupled system of itinerant and localized electron states together with an exchange coupling between the two. For the itinerant system we include electron-electron Coulomb scattering and electron-phonon scattering. We study numerically the heat-induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics due to the interplay of exchange scattering and spin-independent scattering processes and discuss different scenarios for the demagnetization and relaxation dynamics of the sublattices. Our results highlight the impact of spin-conserving electron-electron scattering processes on the exchange-driven spin dynamics on ultrashort timescales.

Optical signatures of bulk g-wave altermagnetism in MnTe

For planar d-wave altermagnets, it has been shown that a spin polarization can be induced in a controlled fashion by ultrashort-pulse excitation, even though the material is magnetically compensated. Here, we theoretically analyze the response of the prototypical bulk $g$-wave altermagnet $α$-MnTe to linearly polarized ultrashort pulses. We demonstrate how the electronic spin response in $α$-MnTe exhibits different symmetry characteristics by calculating the excited electron distributions based on ab initio band structure data. These characteristics depend not only on the nodal planes of the bulk g-wave altermagnet, but also on the excitation pulse. We present a simple procedure to analyze the excited-state characteristics via two-dimensional cuts through the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, which can be used as guidance to present-day magneto-optical techniques.

All optical excitation of spin polarization in d-wave altermagnets

The recently discovered altermagnets exhibit collinear magnetic order with zero net magnetization but with unconventional spin-polarized d/g/i-wave band structures, expanding the known paradigms of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In addition to novel current-driven electronic transport effects, the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in these systems also makes it possible to obtain a spin response to \emph{linearly polarized} fields in the optical frequency domain. We show through ab-initio calculations of the prototypical d-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$, with a symmetry combining twofold spin rotation with fourfold lattice rotation, $[C_2\|C_{4z}]$, that there is an optical analogue of a spin splitter effect, as the coupling to a linearly polarized exciting laser field makes the d-wave character of the altermagnet directly visible. By magneto-optical measurements on RuO$_2$ films of different thicknesses ranging from $2$ to $8\,$nanometers, we demonstrate the predicted connection of the linear polarization of an ultrashort pump pulse to the sign and magnitude of the optically excited electronic spin polarization in the ultrathin RuO$_2$ films. The possibility of exciting and controlling an electronic spin polarization by linearly polarized optical pulses in a compensated system is a unique consequence of the altermagnetic material properties. Our experimental results therefore establish an optical pump-probe based protocol for detection of altermagnetic characteristics in ultrathin RuO$_2$ films, but our all-optical approach should apply more generally to materials in this altermagnetic symmetry class.

Interplay of electron-magnon scattering and spin-orbit induced electronic spin-flip scattering in a two-band Stoner model

This paper presents a theoretical investigation of electron-magnon scattering processes in the ultrafast demagnetization in itinerant ferromagnets. In the framework of a ferromagnetic model system, we compute the spin-dependent dynamics of electrons in itinerant Bloch states by including electron-magnon and electron-electron scattering processes on an equal footing. While the former process flips the electronic spin accompanied by the creation or destruction of a magnon, the latter exchanges electronic angular momentum with the lattice due to the influence of spin-orbit coupling. We show that, for a realistic choice of the electron-magnon interaction and deposited pulse energy, the interplay of these two different scattering mechanisms leads to the creation of magnons and a transfer of angular momentum to the lattice that constitutes an essentially non-equilibrium microscopic scenario for the ultrafast demagnetization process in itinerant ferromagnets.

Ultrafast electron-phonon scattering in antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals

Topological antiferromagnetic systems, which exhibit anisotropic band structures combined with complex relativistic spin structures in momentum space, have shown strong magnetoresistance effects driven by Dirac fermion characteristics. While these new antiferromagnets have been studied in transport experiments, very little is known about their spin-dependent electronic dynamics on ultrafast timescales and far-from-equilibrium behavior. This paper investigates theoretically the spin-dependent electronic dynamics due to electron-phonon scattering in a model electronic band structure that corresponds to a Dirac semimetal antiferromagnet. Following a spin conserving instantaneous excitation we obtain a change of the antiferromagnetic spin polarization due to the scattering dynamics for the site-resolved spin expectation values. This allows us to identify fingerprints of the anisotropic band structure in the carrier dynamics on ultrashort timescales.

Ultrafast electron dynamics in altermagnetic materials

Altermagnets constitute a new class of magnetic materials that combine properties previously thought to be exclusive to either antiferromagnets or ferromagnets, and have unique properties of their own. In particular, a combination of symmetries connecting magnetic sublattices gives rise to a band spin splitting exhibiting unconventional d, g, or i-wave character. Their unique electronic properties have already led to new spin-dependent transport effects. Here, we consider their spin and charge dynamics on ultrafast timescales. We use a minimal tight binding model that captures the main features of the altermagnetic candidate material KRu$_4$O$_8$. In the framework of this model, we compute the spin-dependent electronic scattering dynamics after ultrashort-pulse excitation and show through these microscopic calculations how electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering processes redistribute optically excited carriers in a 2D slice of the Brillouin zone. We find that the optically excited spin polarization is long lived (~1ps) compared to the electron-electron momentum scattering lifetime of roughly 10fs. This contrasts remarkably with the much shorter spin lifetimes observed in typical ultrafast electronic spin dynamics in conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, making these pulse-driven spin excitation experiments a key probe of altermagnetism.

Signatures of ballistic and diffusive transport in the time-dependent Kerr-response of magnetic materials

We calculate the influence of diffusive and ballistic transport on ultrafast magnetization in thick metallic films. When only diffusive transport is present, gradients of magnetization in the material remain up to picosecond timescales. In contrast, in the extreme superdiffusive limit where ballistic transport dominates, the magnetization changes homogeneously in space. We calculate the measurable magneto-optical responses for a $\SI{40}{\nano\meter}$ Nickel film. Although the resulting Kerr rotation dynamics are found to be very similar in the two limits of transport, our simulations reveal a clear signature of magnetization gradients in the Kerr ellipticity dynamics, namely a strong probe-angle dependence for the case when diffusive transport allows gradients to persist. We then perform probe-angle dependent complex magneto-optical Kerr effect (CMOKE) measurements on an excited \SI{40}{\nano\meter} Nickel film. The angle dependence of the measured Kerr signals closely matches the simulated response with diffusive transport. Therefore we conclude that the influence of ballistic transport on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in such films is negligible.

Ultrafast Demagnetization Dynamics Due to Electron-Electron Scattering and Its Relation to Momentum Relaxation in Ferromagnets

We analyze theoretically the demagnetization dynamics in a ferromagnetic model system due to the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron Coulomb scattering. We compute the $k$-resolved electronic reduced spin-density matrix including precessional dynamics around internal spin-orbit and exchange fields as well as the electron-electron Coulomb scattering for densities and spin coherences. Based on a comparison with numerical solutions of the full Boltzmann scattering integrals, we establish that the $k$-resolved reduced spin-density matrix dynamics are well described using a simpler generalized relaxation-time ansatz for the reduced spin-density matrix. This ansatz allows one to relate the complicated scattering dynamics underlying the demagnetization dynamics to a physically meaningful momentum relaxation time $τ$. Our approach reproduces the behaviors of the demagnetization time $τ_{m} \propto 1/τ$ and $τ_{m} \propto τ$ for the limits of short and long $τ$, respectively, and is also valid for the intermediate regime. The ansatz thus provides a tool to include the correct demagnetization behavior in approaches that treat other contributions to the magnetization dynamics such as transport or magnon/phonon dynamics.

Indirect optical manipulation of the antiferromagnetic order of insulating NiO by ultrafast interfacial energy transfer

We report the ultrafast, (sub)picosecond reduction of the antiferromagnetic order of the insulating NiO thin film in a Pt/NiO bilayer. This reduction of the antiferromagnetic order is not present in pure NiO thin films after a strong optical excitation. This ultrafast phenomenon is attributed to an ultrafast and highly efficient energy transfer from the optically excited electron system of the Pt layer into the NiO spin system. We propose that this energy transfer is mediated by a stochastic exchange scattering of hot Pt electrons at the Pt/NiO interface.

Control of transport phenomena in magnetic heterostructures by wavelength modulation

We demonstrate the tuneablity of the ultrafast energy flow in magnetic/non-magnetic bilayer structures by changing the wavelength of the optical excitation. This is achieved by an advanced description of the temperature based $μ$T-model that explicitly considers the wavelength- and layer-dependent absorption profile within multilayer structures. For the exemplary case of a Ni/Au bilayer, our simulations predict that the energy flow from Ni to Au is reversed when changing the wavelength of the excitation from the infrared to the ultraviolet spectral range. These predictions are fully supported by characteristic signatures in the magneto-optical Kerr traces of the Ni/Au model system. Our results will open up new avenues to steer and control the energy transport in designed magnetic multilayer for ultrafast spintronic applications.

Optical amplification in a CDW-phase of a quasi-two dimensional material

We study theoretically the quenching of a charge-density-wave phase in a model system of a quasi-two dimensional material, which includes both electron-hole and electron-phonon interactions leading, respectively to excitonic and coherent-phonon contributions. We discuss how interaction processes affect anomalous expectation values and present a microscopic dynamical picture of the quenching of the phase. We use projection techniques to illustrate the time-dependent appearance of additional bands and anomalous expectation values. We propose an optical amplification effect with a high modulation frequency in the mid-infrared regime.

Direct Access to Auger recombination in Graphene

Auger scattering channels are of fundamental importance to describe and understand the non-equilibrium charge carrier dynamics in graphene. While impact excitation increases the number of carriers in the conduction band and has been observed experimentally, direct access to its inverse process, Auger recombination, has so far been elusive. Here, we tackle this problem by applying our novel setup for ultrafast time-resolved photoelectron momentum microscopy. Our approach gives simultaneous access to charge carrier dynamics at all energies and in-plane momenta within the linearly dispersive Dirac cones. We thus provide direct evidence for Auger recombination on a sub-10~fs timescale by identifying transient energy- and momentum-dependent populations far above the excitation energy. We compare our results with model calculations of scattering processes in the Dirac cone to support our experimental findings.

Simulation of Hot-Carrier Dynamics and Terahertz Emission in Laser-Excited Metallic Bilayers

Metallic bilayer structures have been shown to emit strong terahertz (THz) pulses. We present a predictive multiscale mode that simulates optically induced spin-currents in a Fe/Pt-heterostructure and the emitted electric field. Electronic effects are treated on the nano scale using the Boltzmann transport equation for the dynamics of out-of-equilibrium charge carriers, numerically solved with a particle-in-cell code. The optical effects are simulated with a formalism that bridges the nanometer scale of the structure to the micrometer scale of the emitted waves. The approach helps to understand recent experimental findings on the basis of microscopic scattering effects and transport phenomena. Our theory's versatility allows it to be readily adapted to a wide spectrum of spintronic THz emitter designs. As an example, we show how the THz generation efficiency, defined as output to input power ratio, can be improved and optimized using serially stacked layers in conjunction with THz anti-reflection coatings.

Particle-in-cell simulation of ultrafast hot-carrier transport in Fe/Au-heterostructures

We describe a theoretical approach for spin-polarized hot-electron transport, as it occurs after excitation by ultrafast optical pulses in heterostructures formed by ferromagnetic and normal metals. We formulate a spin-dependent particle-in-cell model that solves the Boltzmann equation for excited electrons. It includes lifetimes and transmission coefficients as parameters, which can be taken from ab-initio calculations or experiment, and can be easily extended to multilayer systems. This approach is capable of describing electron transport in the ballistic, super-diffusive and diffusive regime including secondary-carrier generation. We apply the model to optically excited carriers in Fe/Au bilayers and Fe/Au/Fe spin-valve structures. We gain microscopic insight into the hot-electron transport dynamics probed in recent experiments on spin-valves. We find contributions to the demagnetization dynamics induced in Fe/Au/Fe trilayers regardless of the parallel or antiparallel magnetic alignment of the Fe layers.

Impact ionization dynamics in small band-gap 2D materials from a coherent phonon mechanism

We study theoretically the role of carrier multiplication due to impact ionization after an ultrafast optical excitation in a model system of a quasi-two dimensional material with a small band gap. As a mechanism for the photo-induced band gap narrowing we use coherent phonons, which mimics the quenching of an insulator phase. We discuss the importance of impact ionization in the ultrafast response, and investigate the interplay between carrier and band dynamics. Our model allows us to compare with recent experiments and identify signatures of carrier multiplication in typical electronic distribution curves as measured by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In particular we investigate the influence of the shape of the bands on the carrier multiplication and the respective contributions of band and carrier dynamics to electronic distribution curves.

Off-resonant all-optical switching dynamics in a ferromagnetic model system

We present a theoretical study of the the effects of off-resonant polarized optical fields on a ferromagnetic model system. We determine the light-induced dynamics of itinerant carriers in a system that includes magnetism at the mean-field level and spin-orbit coupling. We investigate an all-optical switching process for ferromagnets, which is close to the one proposed by Qaiumzadeh et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 064416] for the inverse Faraday effect. By computing the optically driven coherent dynamics together with incoherent scattering mechanisms we go beyond a perturbation expansion in powers of the optical field. We find an important contribution of a dynamic Stark effect coupling of the Raman type between the magnetic bands, which leads to a polarization-dependent effect on the magnetization that may support or oppose switching, but also contributes to demagnetization via an increase in electronic energy.

Ultrafast spin-lattice relaxation in ferromagnets including effective spin-orbit fields

We investigate ultrafast demagnetization due to electron-phonon interaction in a model band-ferromagnet. We show that the microscopic mechanism behind the spin dynamics due to electron-phonon interaction is the interplay of scattering and the precession around momentum-dependent effective internal spin-orbit magnetic fields. The resulting magnetization dynamics can only be mimicked by spin-flip transitions if the spin precession around the internal fields is sufficiently fast (compared to the scattering time) so that it averages out the transverse spin components.

Generalized Elliott-Yafet spin-relaxation time for arbitrary spin mixing

We extend our recent result for the spin-relaxation time due to acoustic electron-phonon scattering in degenerate bands with spin mixing [New J. Phys. 18, 023012 (2015)] to include interactions with optical phonons, and present a numerical evaluation of the spin-relaxation time for intraband hole-phonon scattering in the heavy-hole (HH) bands of bulk GaAs. Comparing our computed spin-relaxation times to the conventional Elliott-Yafet result quantitatively demonstrates that the latter underestimates the spin-relaxation time because it does not correctly describe how electron-phonon interactions change the (vector) spin expectation value of the single-particle states. We show that the conventional Elliott-Yafet spin relaxation time is a special case of our result for weak spin mixing.
