The Colin de Verdière Graph Parameter for Threshold Graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators on threshold graphs and prove a formula for the Colin de Verdière parameter in terms of the building sequence. We construct an optimal Colin de Verdière matrix for each connected threshold graph $G$ of $n$ vertices. For a large subclass of threshold graphs we construct an alternative Colin de Verdière matrix depending on a large parameter. As a corollary to this last construction, we give estimates on the size of the non-zero eigenvalues of this matrix.

Cutoff Resolvent Estimates and the Semilinear Schrödinger Equation

This paper shows how abstract resolvent estimates imply local smoothing for solutions to the Schrödinger equation. If the resolvent estimate has a loss when compared to the optimal, non-trapping estimate, there is a corresponding loss in regularity in the local smoothing estimate. As an application, we apply well-known techniques to obtain well-posedness results for the semi-linear Schrödinger equation.

Applications of Cutoff Resolvent Estimates to the Wave Equation

We consider solutions to the linear wave equation on non-compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary when the geodesic flow admits a filamentary hyperbolic trapped set. We obtain a polynomial rate of local energy decay with exponent depending only on the dimension.

Dispersive Estimates for Manifolds with one Trapped Orbit

For a large class of complete, non-compact Riemannian manifolds, $(M,g)$, with boundary, we prove high energy resolvent estimates in the case where there is one trapped hyperbolic geodesic. As an application, we have the following local smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger propagator: \int_0^T || ρ_s e^{it(Δ_g-V)} u_0 ||_{H^{1/2 - ε}(M)}^2 dt \leq C_T || u_0 ||_{L^2(M)}^2, where $ρ_s(x) \in \Ci(M)$ satisfies $ρ_s = <\dist_g(x,x_0)>^{-s}$, $s> \half$, and $V \in \Ci(M)$, $0 \leq V \leq C$ satisfies $|\nabla V| \leq C <\dist(x,x_0)>^{-1-δ}$ for some $δ>0$. From the local smoothing estimate, we deduce a family of Strichartz-type estimates, which are used to prove two well-posedness results for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. As a second application, we prove the following exponential local energy decay estimate for solutions to the wave equation when $\dim M = n \geq 3$ is odd and $M$ is equal to $\reals^n$ outside a compact set: \be \int_M |ψ\partial_t u |^2 + | ψ\nabla u |^2 dx} \leq C e^{-t/C} (||u(x,0)||_{H^{1+ε}(M)}^2 + ||D_tu(x,0)||_{H^ε(M)}^2), where $ψ\in \Ci(M)$, $ψ\equiv e^{-|x|^2}$ outside a compact set.

Semiclassical Nonconcentration near Hyperbolic Orbits

For a large class of semiclassical pseudodifferential operators, including Schrödinger operators, $ P (h) = -h^2 Δ_g + V (x) $, on compact Riemannian manifolds, we give logarithmic lower bounds on the mass of eigenfunctions outside neighbourhoods of generic closed hyperbolic orbits. More precisely we show that if $ A $ is a pseudodifferential operator which is microlocally equal to the identity near the hyperbolic orbit and microlocally zero away from the orbit, then \[ \| u \| \leq C (\sqrt{\log(1/h)}/ h) \| P (h)u \| + C \sqrt {\log(1/h)} \| (I - A) u \| . \] This generalizes earlier estimates of Colin de Verdière-Parisse \cite{CVP} obtained for a special case, and of Burq-Zworski \cite{BZ} for real hyperbolic orbits.

Growth and Zeros of the Zeta Function for Hyperbolic Rational Maps

This paper describes new results on the growth and zeros of the Ruelle zeta function for the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map. It is shown that the zeta function is bounded by $\exp(C_K |s|^δ)$ in strips $|\Re s| \leq K$, where $δ$ is the dimension of the Julia set. This leads to bounds on the number of zeros in strips (interpreted as the Pollicott-Ruelle resonances of this dynamical system). An upper bound on the number of zeros in polynomial regions $\{|\Re s | \leq |\Im s|^α\}$ is given, followed by weaker lower bound estimates in strips $\{\Re s > -C, |\Im s|\leq r\}$, and logarithmic neighbourhoods $\{|\Re s | \leq ρ\log |\Im s| \}$. Recent numerical work of Strain-Zworski suggests the upper bounds in strips are optimal.
