Von Staudt's theorem revisited

We establish a version of von Staudt's theorem on mappings which preserve harmonic quadruples for projective lines over (not necessarily commutative) rings with "sufficiently many" units, in particular 2 has to be a unit.

Incidence and Combinatorial Properties of Linear Complexes

In this paper a generalisation of the notion of polarity is exhibited which allows to completely describe, in an incidence-geometric way, the linear complexes of $h$-subspaces. A generalised polarity is defined to be a partial map which maps $(h-1)$-subspaces to hyperplanes, satisfying suitable linearity and reciprocity properties. Generalised polarities with the null property give rise to a linear complexes and vice versa. Given that there exists for $h>1$ a linear complex of $h$-subspaces which contains no star --this seems to be an open problem over an arbitrary ground field --the combinatorial structure of a partition of the line set of the projective space into non-geometric spreads of its hyperplanes can be obtained. This line partition has an additional linearity property which turns out to be characteristic.

Lifting of divisible designs

The aim of this paper is to present a construction of $t$-divisible designs for $t>3$, because such divisible designs seem to be missing in the literature. To this end, tools such as finite projective spaces and their algebraic varieties are employed. More precisely, in a first step an abstract construction, called $t$-lifting, is developed. It starts from a set $X$ containing a $t$-divisible design and a group $G$ acting on $X$. Then several explicit examples are given, where $X$ is a subset of $PG(n,q)$ and $G$ is a subgroup of $GL_{n+1}(q)$. In some cases $X$ is obtained from a cone with a Veronesean or an $h$-sphere as its basis. In other examples $X$ arises from a projective embedding of a Witt design. As a result, for any integer $t\geq 2$ infinitely many non-isomorphic $t$-divisible designs are found.

Divisible designs from twisted dual numbers

The generalized chain geometry over the local ring $K(ε;σ)$ of twisted dual numbers, where $K$ is a finite field, is interpreted as a divisible design obtained from an imprimitive group action. Its combinatorial properties as well as a geometric model in 4-space are investigated.

Diameter preserving surjections in the geometry of matrices

We consider a class of graphs subject to certain restrictions, including the finiteness of diameters. Any surjective mapping $ϕ:Γ\toΓ'$ between graphs from this class is shown to be an isomorphism provided that the following holds: Any two points of $Γ$ are at a distance equal to the diameter of $Γ$ if, and only if, their images are at a distance equal to the diameter of $Γ'$. This result is then applied to the graphs arising from the adjacency relations of spaces of rectangular matrices, spaces of Hermitian matrices, and Grassmann spaces (projective spaces of rectangular matrices).

Radical parallelism on projective lines and non-linear models of affine spaces

We introduce and investigate an equivalence relation called "radical parallelism" on the projective line over a ring. It is closely related with the Jacobson radical of the underlying ring. As an application, we present a rather general approach to non-linear models of affine spaces and discuss some particular examples.

Isometries and Collineations of the Cayley Surface

Let $F$ be Cayley's ruled cubic surface in a projective three-space over any commutative field $K$. We determine all collineations fixing $F$, as a set, and all cubic forms defining $F$. For both problems the cases $|K|=2,3$ turn out to be exceptional. On the other hand, if $|K|\geq 4$ then the set of simple points of $F$ can be endowed with a non-symmetric distance function. We describe the corresponding circles, and we establish that each isometry extends to a unique projective collineation of the ambient space.

The Betten-Walker spread and Cayley's ruled cubic surface

We establish that, over certain ground fields, the set of osculating tangents of Cayley's ruled cubic surface gives rise to a (maximal partial) spread which is also a dual (maximal partial) spread. It is precisely the Betten-Walker spreads that allow for this construction. Every infinite Betten-Walker spread is not an algebraic set of lines, but it turns into such a set by adding just one pencil of lines.

Higher Order Contact on Cayley's Ruled Cubic Surface

It is well known that Cayley's ruled cubic surface carries a three-parameter family of twisted cubics sharing a common point, with the same tangent and the same osculating plane. We report on various results and open problems with respect to contact of higher order and dual contact of higher order for these curves.

Projective Representations II. Generalized chain geometries

In this paper, projective representations of generalized chain geometries are investigated, using the concepts and results of part I. In particular, we study under which conditions such a projective representation maps the chains of a generalized chain geometry $Σ(F,R)$ to reguli; this mainly depends on how the field $F$ is embedded in the ring $R$. Moreover, we determine all bijective morphisms of a certain class of generalized chain geometries with the help of projective representations.

On the axiomatics of projective and affine geometry in terms of line intersection

By providing explicit definitions, we show that in both affine and projective geometry of dimension $\geq 3$, considered as first-order theories axiomatized in terms of lines as the only variables, and the binary line-intersection predicate as primitive notion, non-intersection of two lines can be positively defined in terms of line-intersection.

On distant-isomorphisms of projective lines

We determine all distant-isomorphisms between projective lines over semilocal rings. In particular, for those semisimple rings that do not have a simple component which is isomorphic to a field, every distant isomorphism arises from a Jordan isomorphism of rings and a projectivity. We show this by virtue of a one-one correspondence linking the projective line over a semisimple ring with a Segre product of Grassmann spaces.

The Dual of a Chain Geometry

We introduce and discuss the dual of a chain geometry. Each chain geometry is canonically isomorphic to its dual. This allows us to show that there are isomorphisms of chain geometries that arise from antiisomorphisms of the underlying rings.

Cayley's surface revisited

Cayley's (ruled cubic) surface carries a three-parameter family of twisted cubics. We describe the contact of higher order and the dual contact of higher order for these curves and show that there are three exceptional cases.
