Anisotropic Regularity of the Free-Boundary Problem in Compressible Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics

We consider 3D free-boundary compressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition. It describes the motion of a free-surface perfect conducting fluid in an electro-magnetic field. A local existence and uniqueness result was recently proved by Trakhinin and Wang [64] by using Nash-Moser iteration. However, that result loses regularity going from data to solution. In this paper, we show that the Nash-Moser iteration scheme in [64] can be improved such that the local-in-time smooth solution exists and is unique when the initial data is smooth and satisfies the compatibility condition up to infinite order. Second, we prove the a priori estimates without loss of regularity for the free-boundary compressible MHD system in Lagrangian coordinates in anisotropic Sobolev space, with more regularity tangential to the boundary than in the normal direction. It is based on modified Alinhac good unknowns, which take into account the covariance under the change of coordinates to avoid the derivative loss; full utilization of the cancellation structures of MHD system, to turn normal derivatives into tangential ones; and delicate analysis in anisotropic Sobolev spaces. As a result, we can prove the uniqueness and the continuous dependence on initial data provided the local existence, and a continuation criterion for smooth solution. Finally, we extend the local well-posedness theorem to the case of initial data only satisfying compatibility conditions up to finite order, assuming these can be approximated by data satisfying infinitely many compatibility conditions.

Asymptotics and Scattering for Wave-Klein-Gordon Systems

We study the coupled wave-Klein-Gordon systems, introduced by LeFloch-Ma and then Ionescu-Pausader, to model the nonlinear effects from the Einstein-Klein-Gordon equation in harmonic coordinates. We first go over a slightly simplified version of global existence based on LeFloch-Ma, and then derive the asymptotic behavior of the system. The asymptotics of the Klein-Gordon field consist of a modified phase times a homogeneous function, and the asymptotics of the wave equation consist of a radiation field in the wave zone and an interior homogeneous solution coupled to the Klein-Gordon asymptotics. We then consider the inverse problem, the scattering from infinity. We show that given the type of asymptotic behavior at infinity, there exist solutions of the system that present the exact same behavior.

Scattering for wave equations with sources close to the lightcone and prescribed radiation fields

We construct solutions with prescribed radiation fields for wave equations with polynomially decaying sources close to the lightcone. In this setting, which is motivated by semi-linear wave equations satisfying the weak null condition, solutions to the forward problem have a logarithmic leading order term on the lightcone and non-trivial homogeneous asymptotics in the interior of the lightcone. The backward scattering solutions we construct are given to second order by explicit asymptotic solutions in the wave zone, and in the interior of the light cone which satisfy novel matching conditions. In the process we find novel compatibility conditions for the scattering data at null infinity. We also relate the asymptotics of the radiation field towards space-like infinity to explicit homogeneous solutions in the exterior of the light cone. This is the setting of slowly polynomially decaying data corresponding to mass, charge and angular momentum in applications. We show that homogeneous data of degree -1 and -2 for the wave equation results in the same logarithmic terms on the lightcone and homogeneous asymptotics in the interior as for the equations with sources close to the lightcone. The proof requires a delicate analysis of the forward solution close to the light cone and uses the invertibility of the Funk transform.

Global stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in generalized wave coordinates

We prove global existence for Einstein's equations with a charged scalar field for initial conditions sufficiently close to the Minkowski spacetime without matter. The proof relies on generalized wave coordinates adapted to the outgoing Schwarzschild light cones and the estimates for the massless Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system, on the background of metrics asymptotically approaching Schwarzschild at null infinity in such coordinates, by Kauffman. The generalized wave coordinates are obtained from a change of variables, introduced by Lindblad, to asymptotically Schwarzschild coordinates at null infinity. The main technical advances are that the change of coordinates makes critical components of the metric decay faster, making the quasilinear wave operator closer to the flat wave operator, and that commuting with modified Lie derivatives preserves the geometric null structure, improving the error terms. This improved decay of the metric is essential for proving our stability result, and will likely be useful in other contexts as well.

The weak null condition on Kerr backgrounds

We study a system of semilinear wave equations on Kerr backgrounds that satisfies the weak null condition. Under the assumption of small initial data, we prove global existence and pointwise decay estimates.

Masses at null infinity for Einstein's equations in harmonic coordinates

In this work we give a complete picture of how to in a direct simple way define the mass at null infinity in harmonic coordinates in three different ways that we show satisfy the Bondi mass loss law. The first and second way involve only the limit of metric (Trautman mass) respectively the null second fundamental forms along asymptotically characteristic surfaces (asymptotic Hawking mass) that only depend on the ADM mass. The last in an original way involves construction of special characteristic coordinates at null infinity (Bondi mass). The results here rely on asymptotics of the metric derived in [24].

On modified scattering for 1D quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with non-generic potentials

We consider the asymptotic behavior of small global-in-time solutions to a 1D Klein-Gordon equation with a spatially localized, variable coefficient quadratic nonlinearity and a non-generic linear potential. The purpose of this work is to continue the investigation of the occurrence of a novel modified scattering behavior of the solutions that involves a logarithmic slow-down of the decay rate along certain rays. This phenomenon is ultimately caused by the threshold resonance of the linear Klein-Gordon operator. It was previously uncovered for the special case of the zero potential in [51]. The Klein-Gordon model considered in this paper is motivated by the asymptotic stability problem for kink solutions arising in classical scalar field theories on the real line.

Asymptotics for 1D Klein-Gordon equations with variable coefficient quadratic nonlinearities

We initiate the study of the asymptotic behavior of small solutions to one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equations with variable coefficient quadratic nonlinearities. The main discovery in this work is a striking resonant interaction between specific spatial frequencies of the variable coefficient and the temporal oscillations of the solutions. In the resonant case a novel type of modified scattering behavior occurs that exhibits a logarithmic slow-down of the decay rate along certain rays. In the non-resonant case we introduce a new variable coefficient quadratic normal form and establish sharp decay estimates and asymptotics in the presence of a critically dispersing constant coefficient cubic nonlinearity. The Klein-Gordon models considered in this paper are motivated by the study of the asymptotic stability of kink solutions to classical nonlinear scalar field equations on the real line.

Scattering from infinity for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition or the weak null condition

We show global existence backwards from scattering data at infinity for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition or the weak null condition. Semilinear terms satisfying the weak null condition appear in many equations in physics. The scattering data is given in terms of the radiation field, although in the case of the weak null condition there is an additional logarithmic term in the asymptotic behaviour that has to be taken into account. Our results are sharp in the sense that the solution has the same spatial decay as the radiation field does along null infinity, which is assumed to decay at a rate that is consistent with the forward problem. The proof uses a higher order asymptotic expansion together with a new fractional Morawetz estimate with strong weights at infinity.

Decay and asymptotics for the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We obtain sharp decay estimates and asymptotics for small solutions to the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with constant coefficient cubic and spatially localized, variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities. Vector-field techniques to deal with the long-range nature of the cubic nonlinearity become problematic in the presence of variable coefficients. We introduce a novel approach based on pointwise-in-time local decay estimates for the Klein-Gordon propagator to overcome this impasse.

A local energy estimate for wave equations on metrics asymptotically close to Kerr

In this article we prove a local energy estimate for the linear wave equation on metrics with slow decay to a Kerr metric with small angular momentum. As an application, we study the quasilinear wave equation $\Box_{g(u, t, x)} u = 0$ where the metric $g(u, t, x)$ is close (and asymptotically equal)to a Kerr metric with small angular momentum $g(0,t,x)$. Under suitable assumptions on the metric coefficients, and assuming that the initial data for $u$ is small enough, we prove global existence and decay of the solution $u$.

Local well-posedness for the motion of a compressible, self-gravitating liquid with free surface boundary

We establish the local well-posedness for the free boundary problem for the compressible Euler equations describing the motion of liquid under the influence of Newtonian self-gravity. We do this by solving a tangentially-smoothed version of Euler's equations in Lagrangian coordinates which satisfies uniform energy estimates as the smoothing parameter goes to zero. The main technical tools are delicate energy estimates and optimal elliptic estimates in terms of boundary regularity, for the Dirichlet problem and Green's function.

Asymptotic Behavior of the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system

In previous work on the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system first existence and then decay estimates have been shown. Here we show that the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon in the Lorentz gauge satisfy the "weak null condition" and we give the detailed asymptotics for the scalar field and the potential. These asymptotics have two parts, one wave like along outgoing light cones at null infinity, and one homogeneous inside the light cone at time like infinity. Here the charge plays a crucial role in imposing an oscillating factor in the asymptotic system for the field, and in the null asymptotics for the potential. Similar results have previously been shown for Einstein's equations in wave coordinates, and the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system apart from being interesting in itself also provides a simpler semilinear model of the quasilinear Enstein's equations.

Global stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein--Vlasov system in the harmonic gauge

Minkowski space is shown to be globally stable as a solution to the massive Einstein--Vlasov system. The proof is based on a harmonic gauge in which the equations reduce to a system of quasilinear wave equations for the metric, satisfying the weak null condition, coupled to a transport equation for the Vlasov particle distribution function. Central to the proof is a collection of vector fields used to control the particle distribution function, a function of both spacetime and momentum variables. The vector fields are derived using a general procedure, are adapted to the geometry of the solution and reduce to the generators of the symmetries of Minkowski space when restricted to acting on spacetime functions. Moreover, when specialising to the case of vacuum, the proof provides a simplification of previous stability works.

Global existence for quasilinear wave equations close to Schwarzschild

In this article we study the quasilinear wave equation $\Box_{g(u, t, x)} u = 0$ where the metric $g(u, t, x)$ is close to the Schwarzschild metric. Under suitable assumptions of the metric coefficients, and assuming that the initial data for $u$ is small enough, we prove global existence of the solution. The main technical result of the paper is a local energy estimate for the linear wave equation on metrics with slow decay to the Schwarzschild metric.

A priori Estimates for the Compressible Euler Equations for a Liquid with Free Surface Boundary and the Incompressible Limit

In this paper, we prove a new type of energy estimates for the compressible Euler's equation with free boundary, with a boundary part and an interior part. These can be thought of as a generalization of the energies in Christodoulou and Lindblad [CL] to the compressible case and do not require the fluid to be irrotational. In addition, we show that our estimates are in fact uniform in the sound speed. As a consequence, we obtain convergence of solutions of compressible Euler equations with a free boundary to solutions of the incompressible equations, generalizing the result of Ebin [Eb] to when you have a free boundary. In the incompressible case our energies reduces to those in [CL] and our proof in particular gives a simplified proof of the estimates in [CL] with improved error estimates. Since for an incompressible irrotational liquid with free surface there are small data global existence results our result leaves open the possibility of long time existence also for slightly compressible liquids with a free surface.

On the asymptotic behavior of solutions to Einstein's vacuum equations in wave coordinates

We give asymptotics for Einstein vacuum equations in wave coordinates with small asymptotically flat data. We show that the behavior is wave like at null infinity and homogeneous towards time like infinity. We use the asymptotics to show that the outgoing null hypersurfaces approach the Schwarzschild ones for the same mass and that the radiated energy is equal to the initial mass.
