A time splitting method for the three-dimensional linear Pauli equation

We analyze a numerical method to solve the time-dependent linear Pauli equation in three space dimensions. The Pauli equation is a semi-relativistic generalization of the Schrödinger equation for 2-spinors which accounts both for magnetic fields and for spin, with the latter missing in preceding numerical work on the linear magnetic Schrödinger equation. We use a four operator splitting in time, prove stability and convergence of the method and derive error estimates as well as meshing strategies for the case of given time-independent electromagnetic potentials, thus providing a generalization of previous results for the magnetic Schrödinger equation.

Relaxation in an Extended Bosonic Josephson Junction

We present a detailed analysis of the relaxation dynamics in an extended bosonic Josephson junction. We show that stochastic classical field simulations using Gross-Pitaevskii equations in three spatial dimensions reproduce the main experimental findings of M. Pigneur et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 173601 (2018). We give an analytic solution describing the short time evolution through multimode dephasing. For longer times, the observed relaxation to a phase locked state is caused by nonlinear dynamics beyond the sine-Gordon model, induced by the longitudinal confinement potential and persisting even at zero temperature. Finally, we analyze different experimentally relevant trapping geometries to mitigate these effects. Our results provide the basis for future experimental implementations aiming to study nonlinear and quantum effects of the relaxation in extended bosonic Josephson junctions.

A novel nonlocal potential solver based on nonuniform FFT for efficient simulation of the Davey-Stewartson equations

We propose an efficient and accurate solver for the nonlocal potential in the Davey-Stewartson equation using nonuniform FFT (NUFFT). A discontinuity in the Fourier transform of the nonlocal potential causes accuracy locking if the potential is solved by standard FFT with periodic boundary conditions on a truncated domain. Using the fact that the discontinuity disappears in polar coordinates, we reformulate the potential integral and split it into high and low frequency parts. The high frequency part can be approximated by the standard FFT method, while the low frequency part is evaluated with a high order Gauss quadrature accelerated by nonuniform FFT. The NUFFT solver has $O(N\log N)$ complexity, where $N$ is the total number of discretization points, and achieves higher accuracy than standard FFT solver, which makes it a good alternative in simulation. Extensive numerical results show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Highly nonlocal optical nonlinearities in atoms trapped near a waveguide

Nonlinear optical phenomena are typically local. Here we predict the possibility of highly nonlocal optical nonlinearities for light propagating in atomic media trapped near a nano-waveguide, where long-range interactions between the atoms can be tailored. When the atoms are in an electromagnetically-induced transparency configuration, the atomic interactions are translated to long-range interactions between photons and thus to highly nonlocal optical nonlinearities. We derive and analyze the governing nonlinear propagation equation, finding a roton-like excitation spectrum for light and the emergence of order in its output intensity. These predictions open the door to studies of unexplored wave dynamics and many-body physics with highly-nonlocal interactions of optical fields in one dimension.

LaBonte's method revisited: An effective steepest descent method for micromagnetic energy minimization

We present a steepest descent energy minimization scheme for micromagnetics. The method searches on a curve that lies on the sphere which keeps the magnitude of the magnetization vector constant. The step size is selected according to a modified Barzilai-Borwein method. Standard linear tetrahedral finite elements are used for space discretization. For the computation of static hysteresis loops the steepest descent minimizer is faster than a Landau-Lifshitz micromagnetic solver by more than a factor of two. The speed up on a graphic processor is 4.8 as compared to the fastest single-core CPU implementation.

FFT-based Kronecker product approximation to micromagnetic long-range interactions

We derive a Kronecker product approximation for the micromagnetic long range interactions in a collocation framework by means of separable sinc quadrature. Evaluation of this operator for structured tensors (Canonical format, Tucker format, Tensor Trains) scales below linear in the volume size. Based on efficient usage of FFT for structured tensors, we are able to accelerate computations to quasi linear complexity in the number of collocation points used in one dimension. Quadratic convergence of the underlying collocation scheme as well as exponential convergence in the separation rank of the approximations is proved. Numerical experiments on accuracy and complexity confirm the theoretical results.

On the time evolution of Wigner measures for Schrodinger equations

In this survey, our aim is to emphasize the main known limitations to the use of Wigner measures for Schrodinger equations. After a short review of successful applications of Wigner measures to study the semi-classical limit of solutions to Schrodinger equations, we list some examples where Wigner measures cannot be a good tool to describe high frequency limits. Typically, the Wigner measures may not capture effects which are not negligible at the pointwise level, or the propagation of Wigner measures may be an ill-posed problem. In the latter situation, two families of functions may have the same Wigner measures at some initial time, but different Wigner measures for a larger time. In the case of systems, this difficulty can partially be avoided by considering more refined Wigner measures such as two-scale Wigner measures; however, we give examples of situations where this quadratic approach fails.

(Semi)classical limit of the Hartree equation with harmonic potential

Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations (NLS) of the Hartree type occur in the modeling of quantum semiconductor devices. Their "semiclassical" limit of vanishing (scaled) Planck constant is both a mathematical challenge and practically relevant when coupling quantum models to classical models. With the aim of describing the semi-classical limit of the 3D Schrodinger--Poisson system with an additional harmonic potential, we study some semi-classical limits of the Hartree equation with harmonic potential in space dimension n>1. The harmonic potential is confining, and causes focusing periodically in time. We prove asymptotics in several cases, showing different possible nonlinear phenomena according to the interplay of the size of the initial data and the power of the Hartree potential. In the case of the 3D Schrodinger-Poisson system with harmonic potential, we can only give a formal computation since the need of modified scattering operators for this long range scattering case goes beyond current theory. We also deal with the case of an additional "local" nonlinearity given by a power of the local density - a model that is relevant when incorporating the Pauli principle in the simplest model given by the "Schrodinger-Poisson-X$α$ equation". Further we discuss the connection of our WKB based analysis to the Wigner function approach to semiclassical limits.
