Concordance group of virtual knots

We study concordance of virtual knots. Our main result is that a classical knot K is virtually slice if and only if it is classically slice. From this we deduce that the concordance group of classical knots embeds into the concordance group of long virtual knots.

The SU(N) Casson-Lin invariants for links

We introduce the $SU(N)$ Casson-Lin invariants for links $L$ in $S^3$ with more than one component. Writing $L = \ell_1 \cup \cdots \cup \ell_n$, we require as input an $n$-tuple $(a_1,\ldots, a_n) \in {\mathbb Z}^n$ of labels, where $a_j$ is associated with $\ell_j$. The $SU(N)$ Casson-Lin invariant, denoted $h_{N,a}(L)$, gives an algebraic count of certain projective $SU(N)$ representations of the link group $π_1(S^3 \smallsetminus L)$, and the family $h_{N,a}$ of link invariants gives a natural extension of the $SU(2)$ Casson-Lin invariant, which was defined for knots by X.-S. Lin and for 2-component links by Harper and Saveliev. We compute the invariants for the Hopf link and more generally for chain links, and we show that, under mild conditions on the labels $(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$, the invariants $h_{N,a}(L)$ vanish whenever $L$ is a split link.

The SL(2,C) Casson invariant for knots and the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial

In this paper, we extend the definition of the $SL_2(\Bbb C)$ Casson invariant to arbitrary knots $K$ in integral homology 3-spheres and relate it to the $m$-degree of the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial of $K$. We prove a product formula for the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial of the connected sum $K_1 \# K_2$ of two knots in $S^3$ and deduce additivity of $SL_2(\Bbb C)$ Casson knot invariant under connected sum for a large class of knots in $S^3$. We also present an example of a nontrivial knot $K$ in $S^3$ with trivial $\widehat{A}$-polynomial and trivial $SL_2(\Bbb C)$ Casson knot invariant, showing that neither of these invariants detect the unknot.

Alexander invariants for virtual knots

Given a virtual knot $K$, we construct a group $VG_K$ called the virtual knot group, and we use the elementary ideals of $VG_K$ to define invariants of $K$ called the virtual Alexander invariants. For instance, associated to the $k=0$ ideal is a polynomial $H_K(s,t,q)$ in three variables which we call the virtual Alexander polynomial, and we show that it is closely related to the generalized Alexander polynomial $G_K(s,t)$ introduced by Sawollek, Kauffman-Radford, and Silver-Williams. We define a natural normalization of the virtual Alexander polynomial and show it satisfies a skein formula. We also introduce the twisted virtual Alexander polynomial associated to a virtual knot $K$ and a representation $\varrho \colon VG_K \to GL_n(R)$, and we define a normalization of the twisted virtual Alexander polynomial. As applications we derive bounds on the virtual crossing numbers of virtual knots from the virtual Alexander polynomial and twisted virtual Alexander polynomial.

Bridge numbers for virtual and welded knots

Using Gauss diagrams, one can define the virtual bridge number ${\rm vb}(K)$ and the welded bridge number ${\rm wb}(K),$ invariants of virtual and welded knots with ${\rm wb}(K) \leq {\rm vb}(K).$ If $K$ is a classical knot, Chernov and Manturov showed that ${\rm vb}(K) = {\rm br}(K),$ the bridge number as a classical knot, and we ask whether the same thing is true for welded knots. The welded bridge number is bounded below by the meridional rank of the knot group $G_K$, and we use this to relate this question to a conjecture of Cappell and Shaneson. We show how to use other virtual and welded invariants to further investigate bridge numbers. Among them are Manturov's parity and the reduced virtual knot group $\overline{G}_K$, and we apply these methods to address Questions 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.5 raised by Hirasawa, Kamada and Kamada in their paper "Bridge presentation of virtual knots," J. Knot Theory Ramifications 20 (2011), no. 6, 881--893.

Metabelian SL(n,C) representations of knot groups, III: deformations

Given a knot K and an irreducible metabelian SL(n,C) representation we establish an equality for the dimension of the first twisted cohomology. In the case of equality, we prove that the representation must have finite image and that it is conjugate to an SU(n) representation. In this case we show it determines a smooth point x in the SL(n,C) character variety, and we use a deformation argument to establish the existence of a smooth (n-1)-dimensional family of characters of irreducible SL(n,C) representations near x. Combining this with our previous existence results, we deduce the existence of large families of irreducible SU(n) and SL(n,C) non-metabelian representation for knots K in homology 3-spheres S with nontrivial Alexander polynomial. We then relate the condition on twisted cohomology to a more accessible condition on untwisted cohomology of a certain metabelian branched cover of S branched along K.

The SL(2,C) Casson invariant for Dehn surgeries on two-bridge knots

We investigate the behavior of the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along two-bridge knots. Using the results of Hatcher and Thurston, and also results of Ohtsuki, we outline how to compute the Culler--Shalen seminorms, and we illustrate this approach by providing explicit computations for double twist knots. We then apply the surgery formula of Curtis to deduce the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for the 3-manifolds obtained by p/q-Dehn surgery on such knots. These results are applied to prove nontriviality of the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for nearly all 3-manifolds obtained by nontrivial Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic two-bridge knot. We relate the formulas derived to degrees of A-polynomials and use this information to identify factors of higher multiplicity in the $\hat{A}$-polynomial, which is the A-polynomial with multiplicities as defined by Boyer-Zhang.

Metabelian SL(n,C) representations of knot groups

We give a classification of irreducible metabelian representations from a knot group into SL(n,C) and GL(n,C). If the homology of the n-fold branched cover of the knot is finite, we show that every irreducible metabelian SL(n,C) representation is conjugate to a unitary representation and that the set of conjugacy classes of such representations is finite. In that case, we give a formula for this number in terms of the Alexander polynomial of the knot. These results are the higher rank generalizations of a result of Nagasato, who recently studied irreducible, metabelian SL(2,C) representations of knot groups. Finally we deduce the existence irreducible metabelian SL(n,C) representations of the knot group for any knot with nontrivial Alexander polynomial.

Splicing and the SL(2,C) Casson invariant

We establish a formula for the SL(2,C) Casson invariant of spliced sums of homology spheres along knots. Along the way, we show that the SL(2,C) Casson invariant vanishes for spliced sums along knots in the 3-sphere.

The SL(2,C) Casson invariant for Seifert fibered homology spheres and surgeries on twist knots

We derive a simple closed formula for the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for Seifert fibered homology 3-spheres using the correspondence between SL(2,C) character varieties and moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles of rank two. These results are then used to deduce the invariant for Dehn surgeries on twist knots by combining computations of the Culler-Shalen norms with the surgery formula for the SL(2,C) Casson invariant.

The Integer Valued SU(3) Casson Invariant for Brieskorn spheres

We develop techniques for computing the integer valued SU(3) Casson invariant. Our method involves resolving the singularities in the flat moduli space using a twisting perturbation and analyzing its effect on the topology of the perturbed flat moduli space. These techniques, together with Bott-Morse theory and the splitting principle for spectral flow, are applied to calculate the invariant for all Brieskorn homology spheres.

The SU(3) Casson Invariant for Integral Homology 3-Spheres

We derive a gauge theoretic invariant of integral homology 3-spheres which counts gauge orbits of irreducible, perturbed flat SU(3) connections with sign given by spectral flow. To compensate for the dependence of this sum on perturbations, the invariant includes contributions from the reducible, perturbed flat orbits. Our formula for the correction term generalizes that given by Walker in his extension of Casson's SU(2) invariant to rational homology 3-spheres.
