Radial velocity monitoring of long period hot subdwarf + main sequence binaries with HERMES@Mercator

Population synthesis models predict that the majority of sdBs form through stable mass transfer leading to long period binaries. To date, about a hundred close short-period binaries with an sdB component have been found, but not a single long-period system has been established. We show preliminary results from our recent effort in determining orbits for a sample of long-period sdB systems using the HERMES spectrograph on the Mercator telescope.

The evolutionary state of Miras with changing pulsation periods

Context: Miras are long-period variables thought to be in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of evolution. In about one percent of known Miras, the pulsation period is changing. It has been speculated that this changing period is the consequence of a recent thermal pulse in these stars. Aims: We aim to clarify the evolutionary state of these stars, and to determine in particular whether or not they are in the thermally-pulsing (TP-)AGB phase. Methods: One important piece of information that has been neglected so far when determining the evolutionary state is the presence of the radio-active s-process element technetium (Tc). We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise-ratio optical spectra of a dozen prominent Mira variables with changing pulsation period to search for this indicator of TPs and dredge-up. We also use the spectra to measure lithium (Li) abundances. Furthermore, we establish the evolutionary states of our sample stars by means of their present-day periods and luminosities. Results: Among the twelve sample stars observed in this programme, five were found to show absorption lines of Tc. BH Cru is found to be a carbon-star, its period increase in the past decades possibly having stopped by now. We report a possible switch in the pulsation mode of T UMi from Mira-like to semi-regular variability in the past two years. R Nor, on the other hand, is probably a fairly massive AGB star, which could be true for all meandering Miras. Finally, we assign RU Vul to the metal-poor thick disk with properties very similar to the short-period, metal-poor Miras. Conclusions: We conclude that there is no clear correlation between period change class and Tc presence. The stars that are most likely to have experienced a recent TP are BH Cru and R Hya, although their rates of period change are quite different.

Why Galaxies Care about Post-AGB stars

Post-AGB stars evolve on a very fast track and hence not many are known. Their spectral properties make them, in principle, ideal objects to test our theories on the late phases of stellar evolution. This has, however, proven much more difficult than anticipated, mainly because the morphological, dynamical and chemical diversity in Galactic post-AGB stars is very large indeed. Here I focus on recent results and touch upon the bright near future of post-AGB research.

A mid-infrared imaging catalogue of post-AGB stars

Post-AGB stars are key objects for the study of the dramatic morphological changes of low- to intermediate-mass stars on their evolution from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) towards the Planetary Nebula stage. There is growing evidences that binary interaction processes may very well have a determining role in the shaping process of many objects, but so far direct evidence is still weak. We aim at a systematic study of the dust distribution around a large sample of Post-AGB stars as a probe of the symmetry breaking in the nebulae around these systems. We used imaging in the mid-infrared to study the inner part of these evolved stars to probe direct emission from dusty structures in the core of Post-AGB stars in order to better understand their shaping mechanisms. We imaged a sample of 93 evolved stars and nebulae in the mid-infrared using VISIR/VLT, T-Recs/Gemini South and Michelle/Gemini North. We found that all the the Proto-Planetary Nebulae we resolved show a clear departure from spherical symmetry. 59 out of the 93 observed targets appear to be non resolved. The resolved targets can be divided in two categories. The nebulae with a dense central core, that are either bipolar and multipolar. The nebulae with no central core have an elliptical morphology. The dense central torus observed likely host binary systems which triggered fast outflows that shaped the nebulae.

HERMES: a high-resolution fibre-fed spectrograph for the Mercator telescope

The HERMES high-resolution spectrograph project aims at exploiting the specific potential of small but flexible telescopes in observational astrophysics. The optimised optical design of the spectrograph is based on the well-proven concept of white-pupil beam folding for high-resolution spectroscopy. In this contribution we present the complete project, including the spectrograph design and procurement details, the telescope adaptor and calibration unit, the detector system, as well as the optimised data-reduction pipeline. We present a detailed performance analysis to show that the spectrograph performs as specified both in optical quality and in total efficiency. With a spectral resolution of 85000 (63000 for the low-resolution fibre), a spectral coverage from 377 to 900nm in a single exposure and a peak efficiency of 28%, HERMES proves to be an ideal instrument for building up time series of high-quality data of variable (stellar) phenomena.

Post-AGB stars with hot circumstellar dust: binarity of the low-amplitude pulsators

While the first binary post-AGB stars were serendipitously discovered, the distinct characteristics of their Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) allowed us to launch a more systematic search for binaries. We selected post-AGB objects which show a broad dust excess often starting already at H or K, pointing to the presence of a gravitationally bound dusty disc in the system. We started a very extensive multi-wavelength study of those systems and here we report on our radial velocity and photometric monitoring results for six stars of early F type, which are pulsators of small amplitude. To determine the radial velocity of low signal-to-noise time-series, we constructed dedicated auto-correlation masks. The radial velocity variations were subjected to detailed analysis to differentiate between pulsational variability and variability due to orbital motion. Finally orbital minimalisation was performed to constrain the orbital elements. All of the six objects are binaries, with orbital periods ranging from 120 to 1800 days. Five systems have non-circular orbits. The mass functions range from 0.004 to 0.57 solar mass and the companions are likely unevolved objects of (very) low initial mass. We argue that these binaries must have been subject to severe binary interaction when the primary was a cool supergiant. Although the origin of the circumstellar disc is not well understood, the disc is generally believed to be formed during this strong interaction phase. The eccentric orbits of these highly evolved objects remain poorly understood. With the measured orbits and mass functions we conclude that the circumbinary discs seem to have a major impact on the evolution of a significant fraction of binary systems.

A Spectroscopic and Photometric Study of the Metal-Poor, Pulsating, Post-AGB Binary HD 46703

The metal-poor post-AGB star HD 46703 is shown to be a single-line spectroscopic binary with a period of 600 days, a high velocity of -94 km/s, and an orbital eccentricity of 0.3. Light curve studies show that it also pulsates with a period of 29 days. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra were used for a new abundance study. The atmospheric model determined is T(eff) = 6250 K, log(g) = 1.0, V(t) = 3.0 km/s, and a metal abundance of [M/H] = -1.5. A low carbon abundance and lack of s-process element enhancement indicate that the star has not experienced third dredge-up on the AGB. The sulfur and zinc abundances are high compared with iron, and the chemical abundances show a clear anti-correlation with condensation temperature. The abundance depletion pattern is similar to that seen in other post-AGB binaries, and, like them, is attributed to the chemical fractionation of refractory elements onto dust stored in a circumbinary disk and the re-accretion of volatiles in the stellar atmosphere. The infrared excess is small but the excess energy distribution is very similar to what can expected from a disk. HD 46703 joins the growing list of depleted, post-AGB stars which are likely surrounded by a dusty and stable circumbinary disk.

Post-AGB Binaries

The specific characteristic of the SED of serendipitously discovered post-AGB binaries, allowed us to launch a very extensive multi-wavelength study of evolved objects, selected on the basis of very specific selection criteria. Those criteria were tuned to discover more stars with circumstellar dusty discs. The observational study includes radial velocity monitoring, high spectral resolution optical studies, infrared spectral dust studies, sub-mm bolometric observations and high spatial resolution interferometric experiments with the VLTI. In this contribution, we will review the preliminary results of this program showing that the binary rate is indeed very high. We argue that the formation of a stable circumbinary disc must play a lead role in the evolution of the systems.

Binary post-AGB stars and their Keplerian discs

In this contribution we give a progress report on our systematic study of a large sample of post-AGB stars. The sample stars were selected on the basis of their infrared colours and the selection criteria were tuned to discover objects with hot dust in the system. We started a very extensive, multi-wavelength programme which includes the analysis of our radial velocity monitoring; our optical high-resolution spectra; our groundbased N-band spectral data as well as the Spitzer full spectral scans; the broad-band SED and the high spatial-resolution interferometric experiments with the VLTI. In this contribution we highlight the main results obtained so far and argue that all systems in our sample are indeed binaries, which are surrounded by dusty Keplerian circumbinary discs. The discs play a lead role in the evolution of the systems.

V453 Oph: a s-process enriched, but carbon-deficient RV Tauri star of low intrinsic metallicity

This paper reports the detection of a heavy element enriched RV Tauri variable with an abundance pattern that differs significantly from a standard s-process enriched object: V453 Oph. Based on optical high-resolution spectra, we determined that this object of low intrinsic metallicity ([Fe/H] = -2.2) has a mild, but significant, enrichment ([s/Fe] ~ +0.5) of heavy elements for which the distribution points to slow neutron capture nucleosynthesis. This result is strengthened by a comparative analysis to the non-enriched RV Tauri star DS Aqr ([s/Fe] = 0.0). Although V453 Oph is the first RV Tauri star showing a strong s-process signature, it is NOT accompanied by C enhancement, challenging our current nucleosynthetic models of post-AGB stars that predict a simultaneous enrichment in C and s-process elements. The low N abundance excludes CN cycling as being responsible for the low C abundance. We explore three different scenarios to explain the heavy element distribution in this evolved object: an enrichment of the parental cloud, an accretion scenario in which the chemical patterns were acquired by mass transfer in a binary system and an intrinsic enrichment by dredge-up.

How to reconcile the C and s-process abundances in the metal-poor star V453 Oph ?

In this poster we present a detailed chemical analysis of the RV Tauri star of low intrinsic metallicity, V453 Oph ([Fe/H]=-2.2), which shows a mild but clear s-process surface overabundance. This result is strengthened by a relative analysis to the RV Tauri star DS Aqr of similar metal deficiency ([Fe/H]=-1.6), but without such s-process enrichment. A remarkable result is that the s-process enrichment of V453 Oph is not accompanied by a measurable C enhancement. To explain the surface abundances observed in V453 Oph, two nucleosynthesis models are considered. The first model assumes the partial mixing of protons during the radiative interpulse phase while the second scenario is based on the possible production of s-process elements within the flash-driven convective pulse only. Both models can give a satisfactory explanation for the s-process enrichment of V453 Oph, but not the simultaneous low C-abundance observed.

A study of the s-process in the carbon-rich post-AGB stars IRAS06530-0213 and IRAS08143-4406 on the basis of VLT-UVES spectra

In an effort to extend the still limited sample of s-process enriched post-AGB stars, high-resolution, high signal-to-noise VLT+UVES spectra of the optical counterparts of the infrared sources IRAS06530-0213 and IRAS08143-4406 were analysed. The objects are moderately metal deficient by [Fe/H]=-0.5 and -0.4 respectively, carbon-rich and, above all, heavily s-process enhanced with a [ls/Fe] of 1.8 and 1.5 respectively. Especially the spectrum of IRAS06530-0213 is dominated by transitions of s-process species, and therefore resembling the spectrum of IRAS05341+0852, the most s-process enriched object known so far. The two objects are chemically very similar to the 21micron objects discussed in Van Winckel & Reyniers (2000). A homogeneous comparison with the results of these objects reveals that the relation between the third dredge-up efficiency and the neutron nucleosynthesis efficiency found for the 21micron objects, is further strengthened. On the other hand, a detailed comparison with the predictions of the latest AGB models indicates that the observed spread in nucleosynthesis efficiency is certainly intrinsic, and proves that different C-13 pockets are needed for stars with comparable mass and metallicity to explain their abundances.

Detection of elements beyond the Ba-peak in VLT+UVES spectra of post-AGB stars

In this letter, we report on our successful systematic search for lines of elements beyond the Ba-peak in spectra of s-process enriched post-AGB stars. Using newly released atomic data from both the VALD database and the D.R.E.A.M. project, we could derive abundances for several elements heavier than europium for three objects, on the base of high quality VLT+UVES spectra. The abundances of these elements are of particular interest since they turn out to be powerful constraints for chemical evolutionary AGB models. Their high abundances indicate that, also in only moderately metal deficient AGB stars, production of lead is expected to be significant.

Cerium: the lithium substitute in post-AGB stars

In this letter we present an alternative identification for the line detected in the spectra of s-process enriched low-mass post-AGB stars around 6708A and which was interpreted in the literature as due to Li. Newly released line lists of lanthanide species reveal, however, the likely identification of the line to be due to a CeII transition. We argue that this identification is consistent with the Ce abundance of all the objects discussed in the literature and conclude that in none of the low-mass s-process enriched post-AGB stars there is indication for Li-production.

The ERE of the "Red Rectangle" revisited

We present in this paper high signal-to-noise long-slit optical spectra of the Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the "Red Rectangle" (RR) nebula. These spectra, obtained at different positions in the nebula, reveal an extremely complex emission pattern on top of the broad ERE continuum. It is well known that three features converge at large distance from the central object, in wavelength and profile to the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 5797, 5849.8 and 6614 ang., (e.g. Sarre et al., 1995). In this paper we give a detailed inventory of all spectral subfeatures observed in the 5550--6850 ang. spectral range. Thanks to our high S/N spectra, we propose 5 new features in the RR that can be associated with DIBs. For the 5550--6200 ang. spectral range our slit position was on top of the NE spike of the X shaped nebula. A detailed description of the spatial profile-changes is given of the strongest features revealing that even far out in the nebula at 24 arcsec from the central star, there remains a small shift in wavelength of 1 respectively 2 ang between the ERE subfeatures and the DIB wavelengths of 5797.11 and 5849.78 ang.

The very lithium rich post-AGB SB2 binary HD172481

Double lined spectroscopic binaries in an evolved stage of evolution are expected to be extremely rare since they must consist of equally luminous and thus almost equally evolved objects, which requires an extremely similar initial mass. In this contribution we discuss such rare double evolved SB2 system: HD172481. This binary includes an F-type post-AGB object and an M-type AGB companion. The spectrum shows a surprisingly strong LiI 670.8nm line with an equivalent width of 54mA yielding a lithium abundance of log(Li)=3.6. Several explanations for this huge lithium content are explored.

HD172481: a super lithium-rich metal-deficient post-AGB binary with a red AGB companion

We present in this paper a study on the peculiar supergiant HD172481. Its spectral type (F2Ia), high galactic latitude (b=-10.37), circumstellar dust, high radial velocity and moderate metal deficiency ([Fe/H]=-0.55) confirm the post-AGB character of this object. A detailed chemical analysis shows slight but real s-process overabundances, however no CNO-enhancement was detected. Furthermore, the spectral energy distribution and the TiO bands in the red part of the spectrum reveal a red luminous companion. The luminosity ratio of the hot F type component and this cool M type companion L(F)/L(M) is derived for a reddening of E(B-V)=0.44 (L(F)/L(M)=1.8) and indicates that the companion must also be strongly evolved and probably evolving along the AGB. Neither our photometric data-set, nor our radial velocity monitoring show evidence for orbital variability which may indicate that the period is too large for direct binary interaction. Most interestingly, a strong lithium resonance line is detected, which yields an abundance of log(Li)=3.6. Several explanations for this large lithium content are explored.

Photospheric composition of the carbon-rich 21 micron post-AGB stars IRAS 22223+4327 and IRAS 04296+3429

We present a detailed chemical analysis on the basis of high-resolution, high signal-to-noise optical spectra of two post-AGB objects IRAS 22223+4327 and IRAS 04296+3429. Both display the unidentified $21 μm$ feature in their IR-spectra. The spectroscopic indicators provide accurate atmospheric parameters of $T_{eff}$=6500 K, $log g=1.0$ and $ξ_t = 5.5 km/s$ for IRAS 2223+4327 and $T_{eff}$=7000 K, $log g=1.0$ and $ξ_t = 4.0 km/s$ for IRAS 04296+3429. Both photospheres are found to be metal-deficient with [Fe/H]= -0.4 and -0.7 respectively. C and N are found to be overabundant. The mean abundance of all the measured s-process-elements is [s/Fe]=+1.0 for IRAS 2223+4327 and +1.4 for IRAS 04296+3429. The distribution of the s-process elements can best be described as due to a distribution of neutron exposures with a low mean neutron exposure of $τ_{0} = 0.2 mbarn^{-1}$. The 21 $μ$m stars form an interesting sub-group in the total post-AGB sample of stars, not only for their IR characteristics, but also in a broader context of stellar (chemical) evolution theory. They show, in contrast to other post-AGB stars, that the 3rd dredge-up has been efficient during their AGB evolution. The mean neutron exposure is lower than expected for their metallicity.
