Element-wise description of the $\mathcal I$-characterized subgroups of the circle

According to Cartan, given an ideal $\mathcal I$ of $\mathbb N$, a sequence $(x_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ in the circle group $\mathbb T$ is said to {\em $\mathcal I$-converge} to a point $x\in \mathbb T$ if $\{n\in \mathbb N: x_n \not \in U\}\in \mathcal I$ for every neighborhood $U$ of $x$ in $\mathbb T$. For a sequence $\mathbf u=(u_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ in $\mathbb Z$, let $$t_\mathbf u^\mathcal I(\mathbb T) :=\{x\in \mathbb T: u_nx \ \text{$\mathcal I$-converges to}\ 0 \}.$$ For an analytic free $P$-ideal $\mathcal I$, this set is a Borel (hence, Polishable) subgroup of $\mathbb T$ with many nice properties, largely studied in the case when $\mathcal I = \mathcal F in$ is the ideal of all finite subsets of $\mathbb N$ (so $\mathcal F in$-convergence coincides with the usual one) for its remarkable connection to topological algebra, descriptive set theory and harmonic analysis. We give a complete element-wise description of $t_\mathbf u^\mathcal I(\mathbb T)$ when $\mathbf u$ is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers with $u_0=1$ and $u_n\mid u_{n+1}$ for every $n\in\mathbb N$ and under suitable hypotheses on $\mathcal I$. In the special case when $\mathcal I =\mathcal F in$, we obtain an alternative proof of a simplified version of a known result.

Lattice uniformities inducing unbounded convergence

A net $(x_\gamma)_{\gamma\in\Gamma}$ in a locally solid Riesz space $(X,\tau)$ is said to be unbounded $\tau$-convergent to $x$ if $|x_\gamma-x|\wedge u\mathop{\overset{\tau}{\longrightarrow}} 0$ for all $u\in X_+$. We recall that there is a locally solid linear topology $\mathfrak{u}\tau$ on $X$ such that unbounded $\tau$-convergence coincides with $\mathfrak{u}\tau$-convergence, and moreover, $\mathfrak{u}\tau$ is characterised as the weakest locally solid linear topology which coincides with $\tau$ on all order bounded subsets. It is with this motivation that we introduce, for a uniform lattice $(L,u)$, the weakest lattice uniformity $u^\ast$ on $L$ that coincides with $u$ on all the order bounded subsets of $L$. It is shown that if $u$ is the uniformity induced by the topology of a locally solid Riesz space $(X,\tau)$, then the $u^*$-topology coincides with $\mathfrak{u}\tau$. This allows comparing the results of this paper with earlier results on unbounded $\tau$-convergence. It will be seen that despite the fact that in the setup of uniform lattices most of the machinery used in the techniques of [M. A. Taylor 2019: Unbounded topologies and uo-convergence in locally solid vector spaces, J. Math. Anal. Appl. \bf{472} no.1, 981--1000] is lacking, the concept of `unbounded convergence' well fittingly generalizes to uniform lattices. We shall also answer Questions 2.13, 3.3, 5.10 of [M. A. Taylor 2019: Unbounded topologies and uo-convergence in locally solid vector spaces, J. Math. Anal. Appl. \bf{472} no.1, 981--1000] and Question 18.51 of [M. A. Taylor 2018: Unbounded convergence in vector lattices, Thesis University of Alberta].

On different modes of order convergence and some applications

Different notions for order convergence have been considered by various authors. Associated to every notion of order convergence corresponds a topology, defined by taking as the closed sets those subsets of the poset satisfying that no net in them order converges to a point that is outside of the set. We shall give a thorough overview of these different notions and provide a systematic comparison of the associated topologies. Then, in the last section we shall give an application of this study by giving a result on von Neumann algebras complementing the study started in \cite{ChHaWe}. We show that for every atomic von Neumann algebra (not necessarily $σ$-finite) the restriction of the order topology to bounded parts of $M$ coincides with the restriction of the $σ$-strong topology $s(M,M_\ast)$. We recall that the methods of \cite{ChHaWe} rest heavily on the assumption of $σ$-finiteness. Further to this, for a semi-finite measure space, we shall give a complete picture of the relations between the topologies on $L^\infty$ associated with the duality $\langle L^1, L^\infty\rangle$ and its order topology.

Order topology on orthocomplemented posets of linear subspaces of a pre-Hilbert space

Motivated by the Hilbert-space model for quantum mechanics, we define a pre-Hilbert space logic to be a pair $(S,\el)$, where $S$ is a pre-Hilbert space and $\el$ is an orthocomplemented poset of orthogonally closed linear subspaces of $S$, closed w.r.t. finite dimensional perturbations, (i.e. if $M\in\el$ and $F$ is a finite dimensional linear subspace of $S$, then $M+F\in \el$). We study the order topology $τ_o(\el)$ on $\el$ and show that completeness of $S$ can by characterized by the separation properties of the topological space $(\el,τ_o(\el))$. It will be seen that the remarkable lack of a proper probability-theory on pre-Hilbert space logics -- for an incomplete $S$ -- comes out elementarily from this topological characterization.

History of Globulettes in the Milky Way

Globulettes are small (radii $< 10$ kAU) dark dust clouds, seen against the background of bright nebulae. A majority of the objects have planetary mass. These objects may be a source of brown dwarfs and free floating planetary mass objects in the galaxy. In this paper we investigate how many globulettes could have formed in the Milky Way and how they could contribute to the total population of free floating planets. In order to do that we examine H-alpha images of 27 H~II regions. In these images, we find 778 globulettes. We find that a conservative value of the number of globulettes formed is $5.7\times 10^{10}$. If 10 \% of the globulettes form free floating planets then they have contributed with $5.7\times 10^{9}$ free floating planets in the Milky Way. A less conservative number of globulettes would mean that the globulettes could contribute $2.0\times 10^{10}$ free floating planets. Thus the globulettes could represent a non-negligible source of free floating planets in the Milky Way.

The order topology for a von Neumann algebra

The order topology $τ_o(P)$ (resp. the sequential order topology $τ_{os}(P)$) on a poset $P$ is the topology that has as its closed sets those that contain the order limits of all their order convergent nets (resp. sequences). For a von Neumann algebra $M$ we consider the following three posets: the self-adjoint part $M_{sa}$, the self-adjoint part of the unit ball $M_{sa}^1$, and the projection lattice $P(M)$. We study the order topology (and the corresponding sequential variant) on these posets, compare the order topology to the other standard locally convex topologies on $M$, and relate the properties of the order topology to the underlying operator-algebraic structure of $M$.

Thermodynamics of a Heavy Ion-Irradiated Superconductor: the Zero-Field Transition

Specific heat measurements show that the introduction of amorphous columnar defects considerably affects the transition from the normal to the superconducting state in zero magnetic field. Experimental results are compared to numerical simulations of the 3D XY model for both the pure system and the system containing random columnar disorder. The numerics reproduce the salient features of experiment, showing in particular that the specific heat peak changes from cusp-like to smoothly rounded when columnar defects are added. By considering the specific heat critical exponent alpha, we argue that such behavior is consistent with recent numerical work [Vestergren et al., PRB 70, 054508 (2004)] showing that the introduction of columnar defects changes the universality class of the transition.

Critical Scaling Properties at the Superfluid Transition of $^4$He in Aerogel

We study the superfluid transition of $^4$He in aerogel by Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling analysis. Aerogel is a highly porous silica glass, which we model by a diffusion limited cluster aggregation model. The superfluid is modeled by a three dimensional XY model, with excluded bonds to sites on the aerogel cluster. We obtain the correlation length exponent $ν=0.73 \pm 0.02$, in reasonable agreement with experiments and with previous simulations. For the heat capacity exponent $α$, both experiments and previous simulations suggest deviations from the Josephson hyperscaling relation $α=2-dν$. In contrast, our Monte Carlo results support hyperscaling with $α= -0.2\pm 0.05$. We suggest a reinterpretation of previous experiments, which avoids scaling violations and is consistent with our simulation results.

Evidence of Two Distinct Dynamic Critical Exponents in Connection with Vortex Physics

The dynamic critical exponent $z$ is determined from numerical simulations for the three-dimensional (3D) lattice Coulomb gas (LCG) and the 3D XY models with relaxational dynamics. It is suggested that the dynamics is characterized by two distinct dynamic critical indices $z_0$ and $z$ related to the divergence of the relaxation time $τ$ by $τ\propto ξ^{z_0}$ and $τ\propto k^{-z}$, where $ξ$ is the correlation length and $k$ the wavevector. The values determined are $z_0\approx 1.5$ and $z\approx 1$ for the 3D LCG and $z_0\approx 1.5$ and $z\approx 2$ for the 3D XY model. It is argued that the nonlinear $IV$ exponent relates to $z_0$, whereas the usual Hohenberg-Halperin classification relates to $z$. Possible implications for the interpretation of experiments are pointed out. Comparisons with other existing results are discussed.

Architectural Considerations for Conversational Systems -- The Verbmobil/INTARC Experience

The paper describes the speech to speech translation system INTARC, developed during the first phase of the Verbmobil project. The general design goals of the INTARC system architecture were time synchronous processing as well as incrementality and interactivity as a means to achieve a higher degree of robustness and scalability. Interactivity means that in addition to the bottom-up (in terms of processing levels) data flow the ability to process top-down restrictions considering the same signal segment for all processing levels. The construction of INTARC 2.0, which has been operational since fall 1996, followed an engineering approach focussing on the integration of symbolic (linguistic) and stochastic (recognition) techniques which led to a generalization of the concept of a ``one pass'' beam search.

Research on Architectures for Integrated Speech/Language Systems in Verbmobil

The German joint research project Verbmobil (VM) aims at the development of a speech to speech translation system. This paper reports on research done in our group which belongs to Verbmobil's subproject on system architectures (TP15). Our specific research areas are the construction of parsers for spontaneous speech, investigations in the parallelization of parsing and to contribute to the development of a flexible communication architecture with distributed control.

Monte Carlo calculation of the current-voltage characteristics of a two dimensional lattice Coulomb gas

We have studied the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of a two dimensional lattice Coulomb gas by Monte Carlo simulation. We present three different determinations of the power-law exponent $a(T)$ of the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic, $V \sim I^{a(T)+1}$. The determinations rely on both equilibrium and non-equilibrium simulations. We find good agreement between the different determinations, and our results also agree closely with experimental results for Hg-Xe thin film superconductors and for certain single crystal thin-film high temperature superconductors.

Resistance scaling at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

We study the linear resistance at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition by Monte Carlo simulation of vortex dynamics. Finite size scaling analysis of our data show excellent agreement with scaling properties of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We also compare our results for the linear resistance with experiments. By adjusting the vortex chemical potential to an optimum value, the resistance at temperatures above the transition temperature agrees well with experiments over many decades.
