Stabilization of port-Hamiltonian systems by nonlinear boundary control in the presence of disturbances

In this paper, we are concerned with the stabilization of linear port-Hamiltonian systems of arbitrary order $N \in \mathbb{N}$ on a bounded $1$-dimensional spatial domain $(a,b)$. In order to achieve stabilization, we couple the system to a dynamic boundary controller, that is, a controller that acts on the system only via the boundary points $a,b$ of the spatial domain. We use a nonlinear controller in order to capture the nonlinear behavior that realistic actuators often exhibit and, moreover, we allow the output of the controller to be corrupted by actuator disturbances before it is fed back into the system. What we show here is that the resulting nonlinear closed-loop system is input-to-state stable w.r.t.~square-integrable disturbance inputs. In particular, we obtain uniform input-to-state stability for systems of order $N=1$ and a special class of nonlinear controllers, and weak input-to-state stability for systems of arbitrary order $N \in \mathbb{N}$ and a more general class of nonlinear controllers. Also, in both cases, we obtain convergence to $0$ of all solutions as $t \to \infty$. Applications are given to vibrating strings and beams.

A Review on Realization Theory for Infinite-Dimensional Systems

We give an introduction to the realisation theory for infinite-dimensional systems. That is, we show that for any function $G$, analytic and bounded in the right half of the complex plane, there exists operators $A,B,C$ such that $G(s_1)-G(s_2) = (s_2-s_1) C(s_1 I-A)^{-1}(s_2 I-A)^{-1}B$. Here $A$ is the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous semigroup on a Hilbert space, and $B$ and $C$ are admissible input and output operators, respectively. Our results summarise and clarify the results as found in the literature, starting more than 40 years ago.

Zero Dynamics for Port-Hamiltonian Systems

The zero dynamics of infinite-dimensional systems can be difficult to characterize. The zero dynamics of boundary control systems are particularly problematic. In this paper the zero dynamics of port-Hamiltonian systems are studied. A complete characterization of the zero dynamics for a port-Hamiltonian systems with invertible feedthrough as another port-Hamiltonian system on the same state space is given. It is shown that the zero dynamics for any port-Hamiltonian system with commensurate wave speeds are well-defined, and are also a port-Hamiltonian system. Examples include wave equations with uniform wave speed on a network. A constructive procedure for calculation of the zero dynamics, that can be used for very large system order, is provided.

Port-Hamiltonian descriptor systems

The modeling framework of port-Hamiltonian systems is systematically extended to constrained dynamical systems (descriptor systems, differential-algebraic equations). A new algebraically and geometrically defined system structure is derived. It is shown that this structure is invariant under equivalence transformations, and that it is adequate also for the modeling of high-index descriptor systems. The regularization procedure for descriptor systems to make them suitable for simulation and control is modified to deal with the port-Hamiltonian structure. The relevance of the new structure is demonstrated with several examples.

Equivalence between estimates for quasi-commutators and commutators

In this short note we show that under some mild conditions on the space and the operators, an estimate for $\|Sf(A) - f(B)S\|$ needs only to be studied for invertible $S$ and $B$ equal to $A$. Thus estimates for a quasi-commutator can be derived from that for the commutator.

Feedback theory extended for proving generation of contraction semigroups

Recently, the following novel method for proving the existence of solutions for certain linear time-invariant PDEs was introduced: The operator associated to a given PDE is represented by a (larger) operator with an internal loop. If the larger operator (without the internal loop) generates a contraction semigroup, the internal loop is accretive, and some non-restrictive technical assumptions are fulfilled, then the original operator generates a contraction semigroup as well. Beginning with the undamped wave equation, this general idea can be applied to show that the heat equation and wave equations with damping are well-posed. In the present paper we show how this approach can benefit from feedback techniques and recent developments in well-posed systems theory, at the same time generalising the previously known results. Among others, we show how well-posedness of degenerate parabolic equations can be proved.

A $0-2$ law for cosine families with $\limsup$ to $\infty$

For $\left(C(t)\right)_{t\in\mathbb R}$ being a cosine family on a unital normed algebra, we show that the estimate $\limsup_{t\to\infty^{+}}\|C(t) - I\| <2$ implies that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\in\mathbb R$. This generalizes the result that $\sup_{t\geq0}\|C(t)-I\|<2$ yields that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\geq0$. We also state the corresponding result for discrete cosine families and for semigroups.

Less than one implies zero

In this paper we show that from the estimate $\sup_{t \geq 0}\|C(t) - \cos(at)I\| <1$ we can conclude that $C(t)$ equals $\cos(at) I$. Here $\left(C(t)\right)_{t \geq 0}$ is a strongly continuous cosine family on a Banach space.

Linear wave systems on $n$-D spatial domains

In this paper we study the linear wave equation on an $n$-dimensional spatial domain. We show that there is a boundary triplet associated to the undamped wave equation. This enables us to characterise all boundary conditions for which the undamped wave equation possesses a unique solution non-increasing in the energy. Furthermore, we add boundary inputs and outputs to the system, thus turning it into an impedance conservative boundary control system.

$C_0$-semigroups for hyperbolic partial differential equations on a one-dimensional spatial domain

Hyperbolic partial differential equations on a one-dimensional spatial domain are studied. This class of systems includes models of beams and waves as well as the transport equation and networks of non-homogeneous transmission lines. The main result of this paper is a simple test for $C_0$-semigroup generation in terms of the boundary conditions. The result is illustrated with several examples.

Zero-two law for cosine families

For $\left(C(t)\right)_{t \geq 0}$ being a strongly continuous cosine family on a Banach space, we show that the estimate $\limsup_{t\to 0^{+}}\|C(t) - I\| <2$ implies that $C(t)$ converges to $I$ in the operator norm. This implication has become known as the zero-two law. We further prove that the stronger assumption of $\sup_{t\geq0}\|C(t)-I\|<2$ yields that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\geq0$. Additionally, we derive alternative proofs for similar results for $C_{0}$-semigroups.

Linearization and exponential stability

We give sufficient conditions such that the exponential stability of the linearization of a non-linear system implies that the non-linear system is (locally) exponentially stable. One of these conditions is that the non-linear system is Fréchet differential at the equilibrium, if it is only Gateaux differentiable, then we show by means of an example that the result does not hold.

De Branges-Rovnyak realizations of operator-valued Schur functions on the complex right half-plane

We give a controllable energy-preserving and an observable co-energy-preserving de Branges-Rovnyak functional model realization of an arbitrary given operator Schur function defined on the complex right-half plane. We work the theory out fully in the right-half plane, without using results for the disk case, in order to expose the technical details of continuous-time systems theory. At the end of the article, we make explicit the connection to the corresponding classical de Branges-Rovnyak realizations for Schur functions on the complex unit disk.

Generators with a closure relation

Assume that a block operator of the form $\left(\begin{smallmatrix}A_{1}\\A_{2}\quad 0\end{smallmatrix}\right)$, acting on the Banach space $X_{1}\times X_{2}$, generates a contraction $C_{0}$-semigroup. We show that the operator $A_{S}$ defined by $A_{S}x=A_{1}\left(\begin{smallmatrix}x\\SA_{2}x\end{smallmatrix}\right)$ with the natural domain generates a contraction semigroup on $X_{1}$. Here, $S$ is a boundedly invertible operator for which $ε\ide-S^{-1}$ is dissipative for some $ε>0$. With this result the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the heat equation can be derived from the wave equation.

Weakly admissible $H^{\infty}(\C_{-})$-calculus on general Banach spaces

We show that, given a Banach space and a generator of an exponentially stable $C_{0}$-semigroup, a weakly admissible operator $g(A)$ can be defined for any $g$ bounded, analytic function on the left half-plane. This yields an (unbounded) functional calculus. The construction uses a Toeplitz operator and is motivated by system theory. In separable Hilbert spaces, we even get admissibility. Furthermore, it is investigated when a bounded calculus can be guaranteed. For this we introduce the new notion of exact observability by direction. Finally, it is shown that the calculus coincides with one for half-plane-operators.

Admissible operators and ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$ calculus

Given a Hilbert space and the generator $A$ of a strongly continuous, exponentially stable, semigroup on this Hilbert space. For any $g(-s) \in {\mathcal H}_{\infty}$ we show that there exists an infinite-time admissible output operator $g(A)$. If $g$ is rational, then this operator is bounded, and equals the "normal" definition of $g(A)$. In particular, when $g(s)=1/(s + α)$, $ α\in {\mathbb C}_0^+$, then this admissible output operator equals $(αI - A)^{-1}$. Although in general $g(A)$ may be unbounded, we always have that $g(A)$ multiplied by the semigroup is a bounded operator for every (strictly) positive time instant. Furthermore, when there exists an admissible output operator $C$ such that $(C,A)$ is exactly observable, then $g(A)$ is bounded for all $g$'s with $g(-s) \in {\mathcal H}_{\infty}$, i.e., there exists a bounded ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$-calculus. Moreover, we rediscover some well-known classes of generators also having a bounded ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$-calculus.

Riesz basis for strongly continuous groups

Given a Hilbert space and the generator of a strongly continuous group on this Hilbert space. If the eigenvalues of the generator have a uniform gap, and if the span of the corresponding eigenvectors is dense, then these eigenvectors form a Riesz basis (or unconditional basis) of the Hilbert space. Furthermore, we show that none of the conditions can be weakened. However, if the eigenvalues (counted with multiplicity) can be grouped into subsets of at most $K$ elements, and the distance between the groups is (uniformly) bounded away from zero, then the spectral projections associated to the groups form a Riesz family. This implies that if in every range of the spectral projection we construct an orthonormal basis, then the union of these bases is a Riesz basis in the Hilbert space.
