Conic bundles with nontrivial unramified Brauer group over threefolds

We derive a formula for the unramified Brauer group of a general class of rationally connected fourfolds birational to conic bundles over smooth threefolds. We produce new examples of conic bundles over P^3 where this formula applies and which have nontrivial unramified Brauer group. The construction uses the theory of contact surfaces and, at least implicitly, matrix factorizations and symmetric arithmetic Cohen--Macaulay sheaves, as well as the geometry of special arrangements of rational curves in P^2. We also prove the existence of universally CH_0-trivial resolutions for the general class of conic bundle fourfolds we consider. Using the degeneration method, we thus produce new families of rationally connected fourfolds whose very general member is not stably rational.

The transcendental lattice of the sextic Fermat surface

We prove that the integral polarized Hodge structure on the transcendental lattice of a sextic Fermat surface is decomposable. This disproves a conjecture of Kulikov related to a Hodge theoretic approach to proving the irrationality of the very general cubic fourfold.

On the rationality of the moduli space of Lüroth quartics

We prove that the moduli space M_L of L"uroth quartics in P^2, i.e. the space of quartics which can be circumscribed around a complete pentagon of lines modulo the action of PGL_3(CC) is rational, as is the related moduli space of Bateman seven-tuples of points in P^2.

A Clebsch-Gordan formula for SL_3 and applications to rationality

If R, S, T are irreducible SL_3-representations, we give an easy and explicit description of a basis of the space of equivariant maps from R tensor S to T. We apply this method to the rationality problem for invariant function fields. In particular, we prove the rationality of the moduli space of plane curves of degree 34. This uses a criterion which ensures the stable rationality of some quotients of Grassmannians by an SL-action.

Finite Field Experiments (with an Appendix by Stefan Wiedmann)

We explain how to use computer experiments over finite fields to gain heuristic information about the solution set of polynomial equations in characteristic zero. These are notes of a tutorial I gave at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Higher-Dimensional Geometry over Finite Fields in G"ottingen 2007.

Classification of rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11 in P^4

We use the BGG-correspondence to show that there are at most three possible Hilbert functions for smooth rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11. Surfaces with one of these Hilbert functions have been classified by Popescu. The classification for a second one is done in this paper. For the third Hilbert function the classification is still open.

Low-dimensional Singularities with Free Divisors as Discriminants

We present versal complex analytic families, over a smooth base and of fibre dimension zero, one, or two, where the discriminant constitutes a free divisor. These families include finite flat maps, versal deformations of reduced curve singularities, and versal deformations of Gorenstein surface singularities in C^5. It is shown that such free divisors often admit a "fast normalization", obtained by a single application of the Grauert-Remmert normalization algorithm. For a particular Gorenstein surface singularity in C^5, namely the simple elliptic singularity of type \tilde A_4, we exhibit an explicit discriminant matrix and show that the slice of the discriminant for a fixed j-invariant is the cone over the dual variety of an elliptic curve.

A new family of rational surfaces in P^4

We describe a new method of constructing rational surfaces with given invariants in P^4 and present a family of degree 11 rational surfaces of sectional genus 11 with 2 six-secants that we found with this method.

Generic Syzygy Schemes

For a finite dimensional vector space G we define the k-th generic syzygy scheme Gensyz_k(G) by explicit equations. We show that the syzygy scheme Syz(f) of any syzygy in the linear strand of a projective variety X which is cut out by quadrics is a cone over a linear section of a corresponding generic syzygy scheme. We also give a geometric description of Gensyz_k(G) for k=0,1,2. In particular Gensyz_2(G) is the union of a Pl"ucker embedded Grassmannian and a linear space. From this we deduce that every smooth, non-degenerate projective curve C which is cut out by quadrics and has a p-th linear syzygy of rank p+3 admits a rank 2 vector bundle E with det E = O_C(1) and h^0(E) at least p+4.

Significance of log-periodic signatures in cumulative noise

Using methods introduced by Scargle in 1978 we derive a cumulative version of the Lomb periodogram that exhibits frequency independent statistics when applied to cumulative noise. We show how this cumulative Lomb periodogram allows us to estimate the significance of log-periodic signatures in the S&P 500 anti-bubble that started in August 2000.
