Last syzygies of 1-generic spaces

Consider a determinantal variety X of expected codimension definend by the maximal minors of a matrix M of linear forms. Eisenbud and Popescu have conjectured that 1-generic matrices M are characterised by the property that the syzygy ideals I(s) of all last syzygies s of X coincide with I_X. In this note we prove a geometric version of this characterization, i.e. that M is 1-generic if and only if the syzygy varieties Syz(s)=V(I(s)) of all last syzyzgies have the same support as X.

Predicting critical crashes? A new restriction for the free variables

Several authors have noticed the signature of log-periodic oscillations prior to large stock market crashes [cond-mat/9509033, cond-mat/9510036, Vandewalle et al 1998]. Unfortunately good fits of the corresponding equation to stock market prices are also observed in quiet times. To refine the method several approaches have been suggested: 1) Logarithmic Divergence: Regard the limit where the critical exponent βconverges to 0. 2) Universality: Define typical ranges for the free parameters, by observing the best fit for historic crashes. We suggest a new approach. From the observation that the hazard-rate in cond-mat/9510036 has to be a positive number, we get an inequality among the free variables of the equation for stock-market prices. Checking 88 years of Dow-Jones-Data for best fits, we find that 25% of those that satisfy our inequality, occur less than one year before a crash. We compare this with other methods of crash prediction, i.p. the universality method of Johansen et al., which are followed by a crash in only 9% of the cases. Combining the two approaches we obtain a method whose predictions are followed by crashes in 54% of the cases.

Geometric Syzygies of Mukai Varieties and General Canonical Curves with Genus at most 8

We describe the spaces of minimal rank last syzygies for the Mukai Varieties of sectional genus 6,7 and 8. Based on this we show: 1. The first geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 6 form a non degenerate configuration of 5 lines in P^4. 2. The first geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 7 form a non degenerate, linearly normal, ruled surface of degree 84 on a spinor variety S in P^15. 3. The second geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 8 form a non degenerate configuration of 14 conics on a 2-uple embedded P^5 in P^20. This proves a natural generalization of Green's conjecture [1984], namely that the geometric syzygies should span the space of all syzygies, in these cases. We have generalized results 1 and 3 to general curves of even genus in math.AG/0108078. Result 2 is the main new result of this paper.

Geometric Syzygies of Canonical Curves of even Genus lying on a K3-Surface

Based on a recent result of Voisin [2001] we describe the last nonzero syzygy space in the linear strand of a canonical curve C of even genus g=2k lying on a K3 surface, as the ambient space of a k-2-uple embedded P^{k+1}. Furthermore the geometric syzygies constructed by Green and Lazarsfeld [1984] from g^1_{k+1}'s form a non degenerate configuration of finitely many rational normal curves on this P^{k+1}. This proves a natural generalization of Green's conjecture [1984], namely that the geometric syzygies should span the space of all syzygies, in this case.
