The Exotic $K(2)$-Local Picard Group at the Prime $2$

We calculate the group $κ_2$ of exotic elements in the $K(2)$-local Picard group at the prime $2$ and find it is a group of order $2^9$ isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/8)^2 \times (\mathbb{Z}/2)^3$. In order to do this we must define and exploit a variety of different ways of constructing elements in the Picard group, and this requires a significant exploration of the theory. The most innovative technique, which so far has worked best at the prime $2$, is the use of a $J$-homomorphism from the group of real representations of finite quotients of the Morava stabilizer group to the $K(n)$-local Picard group.

The duality resolution at $n=p=2$

Working at the prime $2$ and chromatic height $2$, we construct a finite resolution of the homotopy fixed points of Morava $E$-theory with respect to the subgroup $\mathbb{G}_2^1$ of the Morava stabilizer group. This is an upgrade of the finite resolution of the homotopy fixed points of $E$-theory with respect to the subgroup $\mathbb{S}_2^1$ constructed in work of Goerss-Henn-Mahowald-Rezk, Beaudry and Bobkova-Goerss.

Cohomology of the Morava stabilizer group through the duality resolution at $n=p=2$

We compute the continuous cohomology of the Morava stabilizer group with coefficients in Morava $E$-theory, $H^*(\mathbb{G}_2, E_t)$, at $p=2$, for $0\leq t < 12$, using the Algebraic Duality Spectral Sequence. Furthermore, in that same range, we compute the $d_3$-differentials in the homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for the $K(2)$-local sphere spectrum. These cohomology groups and differentials play a central role in $K(2)$-local stable homotopy theory.

Chromatic splitting for the $K(2)$-local sphere at $p=2$

We calculate the homotopy type of $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ and $L_{K(1)}L_{K(2)}S^0$ at the prime 2, where $L_{K(n)}$ is localization with respect to Morava $K$-theory and $L_1$ localization with respect to $2$-local $K$ theory. In $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ we find all the summands predicted by the Chromatic Splitting Conjecture, but we find some extra summands as well. An essential ingredient in our approach is the analysis of the continuous group cohomology $H^\ast_c(\mathbb{G}_2,E_0)$ where $\mathbb{G}_2$ is the Morava stabilizer group and $E_0 = \mathbb{W}[[u_1]]$ is the ring of functions on the height $2$ Lubin-Tate space. We show that the inclusion of the constants $\mathbb{W} \to E_0$ induces an isomorphism on group cohomology, a radical simplification.

On the Mod-2 Cohomology of SL 3 (z[ 1 2 , i])

Let $Γ$ = SL 3 (Z[ 1 2 , i]), let X be any mod-2 acyclic $Γ$-CW complex on which $Γ$ acts with finite stabilizers and let Xs be the 2-singular locus of X. We calculate the mod-2 cohomology of the Borel constructon of Xs with respect to the action of $Γ$. This cohomology coincides with the mod-2 cohomology of $Γ$ in cohomological degrees bigger than 8 and the result is compatible with a conjecture of Quillen which predicts the strucure of the cohomology ring H * ($Γ$; Z/2).

A Mini-Course on Morava Stabilizer Groups and Their Cohomology

The Morava stabilizer groups play a dominating role in chromatic stable ho-motopy theory. In fact, for suitable spectra X, for example all finite spectra, thechromatic homotopy type of X at chromatic level n \textgreater{} 0 and a given prime p islargely controlled by the continuous cohomology of a certain p-adic Lie group Gn,in stable homotopy theory known under the name of Morava stabilizer group oflevel n at p, with coefficients in the corresponding Morava module (En)$\star$X.

The Brown-Comenetz dual of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3

We calculate the homotopy type of the Brown-Comenetz dual $I_2$ of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and show that there is a twisting by a non-trivial element $P$ in the exotic part of the Picard group. We give a complete characterization of $P$ as well. The main technique is to give a sequence of calculations of the homotopy groups of elements of the Picard group after smashing with the Smith-Toda complex V(1).

On Hopkins' Picard groups for the prime 3 and chromatic level 2

We give a calculation of Picard groups of K(2)-local invertible spectra and of E(2)-local invertible spectra, both at the prime 3. The main contribution of this paper is to calculation the subgroup of invertible spectra with the same Morava module as a sphere.

The homotopy of the K(2)-local Moore spectrum at the prime 3 revisited

In this paper we use the approach introduced in an earlier paper by Goerss, Henn, Mahowald and Rezk in order to analyze the homotopy groups of L_{K(2)}V(0), the mod-3 Moore spectrum V(0) localized with respect to Morava K-theory K(2). These homotopy groups have already been calculated by Shimomura. The results are very complicated so that an independent verification via an alternative approach is of interest. In fact, we end up with a result which is more precise and also differs in some of its details from that of Shimomura. An additional bonus of our approach is that it breaks up the result into smaller and more digestible chunks which are related to the K(2)-localization of the spectrum TMF of topological modular forms and related spectra. Even more, the Adams-Novikov differentials for L_{K(2)}V(0) can be read off from those for TMF.

On the mod - p cohomology of Out(F_{2(p-1)}

We study the mod-p cohomology of the group Out(F_n) of outer automorphisms of the free group F_n in the case n=2(p-1) which is the smallest n for which the p-rank of this group is 2. For p=3 we give a complete computation, at least above the virtual cohomological dimension of Out(F_4) (which is 5). More precisley, we calculate the equivariant cohomology of the p-singular part of outer space for p=3. For a general prime p>3 we give a recursive description in terms of the mod-p cohomology of Aut(F_k) for k less or equal to p-1. In this case we use the Out(F_{2(p-1)})-equivariant cohomology of the poset of elementary abelian p-subgroups of Out(F_n).
