Drosophila-Inspired 3D Moving Object Detection Based on Point Clouds

3D moving object detection is one of the most critical tasks in dynamic scene analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel Drosophila-inspired 3D moving object detection method using Lidar sensors. According to the theory of elementary motion detector, we have developed a motion detector based on the shallow visual neural pathway of Drosophila. This detector is sensitive to the movement of objects and can well suppress background noise. Designing neural circuits with different connection modes, the approach searches for motion areas in a coarse-to-fine fashion and extracts point clouds of each motion area to form moving object proposals. An improved 3D object detection network is then used to estimate the point clouds of each proposal and efficiently generates the 3D bounding boxes and the object categories. We evaluate the proposed approach on the widely-used KITTI benchmark, and state-of-the-art performance was obtained by using the proposed approach on the task of motion detection.

"Love is as Complex as Math": Metaphor Generation System for Social Chatbot

As the wide adoption of intelligent chatbot in human daily life, user demands for such systems evolve from basic task-solving conversations to more casual and friend-like communication. To meet the user needs and build emotional bond with users, it is essential for social chatbots to incorporate more human-like and advanced linguistic features. In this paper, we investigate the usage of a commonly used rhetorical device by human -- metaphor for social chatbot. Our work first designs a metaphor generation framework, which generates topic-aware and novel figurative sentences. By embedding the framework into a chatbot system, we then enables the chatbot to communicate with users using figurative language. Human annotators validate the novelty and properness of the generated metaphors. More importantly, we evaluate the effects of employing metaphors in human-chatbot conversations. Experiments indicate that our system effectively arouses user interests in communicating with our chatbot, resulting in significantly longer human-chatbot conversations.

The effects of KSEA interaction on the ground-state properties of spin chains in a transverse field

The effects of symmetric helical interaction which is called the Kaplan, Shekhtman, Entin-Wohlman, and Aharony (KSEA) interaction on the ground-state properties of three kinds of spin chains in a transverse field have been studied by means of correlation functions and chiral order parameter. We find that the anisotropic transition of $XY$ chain in a transverse field ($XY$TF) disappears because of the KSEA interaction. For the other two chains, we find that the regions of gapless chiral phases in the parameter space induced by the DM or $XZY-YZX$ type of three-site interaction are decreased gradually with increase of the strength of KSEA interaction. When it is larger than the coefficient of DM or $XZY-YZX$ type of three-site interaction, the gapless chiral phases also disappear.

Non-imaging single-pixel sensing with optimized binary modulation

The conventional high-level sensing techniques require high-fidelity images as input to extract target features, which are produced by either complex imaging hardware or high-complexity reconstruction algorithms. In this letter, we propose single-pixel sensing (SPS) that performs high-level sensing directly from coupled measurements of a single-pixel detector, without the conventional image acquisition and reconstruction process. The technique consists of three steps including binary light modulation that can be physically implemented at $\sim$22kHz, single-pixel coupled detection owning wide working spectrum and high signal-to-noise ratio, and end-to-end deep-learning based sensing that reduces both hardware and software complexity. Besides, the binary modulation is trained and optimized together with the sensing network, which ensures least required measurements and optimal sensing accuracy. The effectiveness of SPS is demonstrated on the classification task of handwritten MNIST dataset, and 96.68% classification accuracy at $\sim$1kHz is achieved. The reported single-pixel sensing technique is a novel framework for highly efficient machine intelligence.

Lidar-based Object Classification with Explicit Occlusion Modeling

LIDAR is one of the most important sensors for Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). Object detection and classification based on lidar point cloud is a key technology for UGV. In object detection and classification, the mutual occlusion between neighboring objects is an important factor affecting the accuracy. In this paper, we consider occlusion as an intrinsic property of the point cloud data. We propose a novel approach that explicitly model the occlusion. The occlusion property is then taken into account in the subsequent classification step. We perform experiments on the KITTI dataset. Experimental results indicate that by utilizing the occlusion property that we modeled, the classifier obtains much better performance.

Cyclical Annealing Schedule: A Simple Approach to Mitigating KL Vanishing

Variational autoencoders (VAEs) with an auto-regressive decoder have been applied for many natural language processing (NLP) tasks. The VAE objective consists of two terms, (i) reconstruction and (ii) KL regularization, balanced by a weighting hyper-parameter β. One notorious training difficulty is that the KL term tends to vanish. In this paper we study scheduling schemes for β, and show that KL vanishing is caused by the lack of good latent codes in training the decoder at the beginning of optimization. To remedy this, we propose a cyclical annealing schedule, which repeats the process of increasing βmultiple times. This new procedure allows the progressive learning of more meaningful latent codes, by leveraging the informative representations of previous cycles as warm re-starts. The effectiveness of cyclical annealing is validated on a broad range of NLP tasks, including language modeling, dialog response generation and unsupervised language pre-training.

This paper presents Thinkey, an efficient, secure, infinitely scalable and decentralized blockchain architecture. It ensures system correctness and liveness by a multi-layer structure. In particular, the system is based on a double-chain architecture and uses a multi-layer consensus protocol to guarantee consistency. Thinkey also uses a novel account model which is based on Actor Model to support the complex logic in the multi-chain structure. Experiment results show that the proposed Thinkey architecture can achieve higher throughput as the number of nodes increases.

Keeping Context In Mind: Automating Mobile App Access Control with User Interface Inspection

Recent studies observe that app foreground is the most striking component that influences the access control decisions in mobile platform, as users tend to deny permission requests lacking visible evidence. However, none of the existing permission models provides a systematic approach that can automatically answer the question: Is the resource access indicated by app foreground? In this work, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of COSMOS, a context-aware mediation system that bridges the semantic gap between foreground interaction and background access, in order to protect system integrity and user privacy. Specifically, COSMOS learns from a large set of apps with similar functionalities and user interfaces to construct generic models that detect the outliers at runtime. It can be further customized to satisfy specific user privacy preference by continuously evolving with user decisions. Experiments show that COSMOS achieves both high precision and high recall in detecting malicious requests. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of COSMOS in capturing specific user preferences using the decisions collected from 24 users and illustrate that COSMOS can be easily deployed on smartphones as a real-time guard with a very low performance overhead.

Geometric energy transfer in a Stückelberg interferometer of two parametrically coupled mechanical modes

Geometric phase, which is acquired after a system undergoing cyclic evolution in the Hilbert space, is believed to be noise-resilient because it depends only on the global properties of the evolution path. Here, we report geometric control of energy transfer between two parametrically coupled mechanical modes in an optomechanical system. The parametric pump is controlled along a closed loop to implement geometric Stückelberg interferometry of mechanical motion, in which the dynamical phase is eliminated using the Hahn-echo technique. We demonstrate that the interference based solely on the geometric phase is robust against certain noises. And, more remarkably, we show that the all-geometric approach can achieve a high energy-transfer rate that is comparable to those using conventional dynamical protocols.

A PTAS for a Class of Stochastic Dynamic Programs

We develop a framework for obtaining polynomial time approximation schemes (PTAS) for a class of stochastic dynamic programs. Using our framework, we obtain the first PTAS for the following stochastic combinatorial optimization problems: \probemax: We are given a set of $n$ items, each item $i\in [n]$ has a value $X_i$ which is an independent random variable with a known (discrete) distribution $π_i$. We can {\em probe} a subset $P\subseteq [n]$ of items sequentially. Each time after {probing} an item $i$, we observe its value realization, which follows the distribution $π_i$. We can {\em adaptively} probe at most $m$ items and each item can be probed at most once. The reward is the maximum among the $m$ realized values. Our goal is to design an adaptive probing policy such that the expected value of the reward is maximized. To the best of our knowledge, the best known approximation ratio is $1-1/e$, due to Asadpour \etal~\cite{asadpour2015maximizing}. We also obtain PTAS for some generalizations and variants of the problem and some other problems.

Classical dynamical localization in a strongly driven two-mode mechanical system

We report the realization of dynamical localization in a strongly driven two-mode optomechanical system consisting of two coupled cantilevers. Due to the coupling, mechanical oscillations can transport between the cantilevers. However, by placing one of the cantilevers inside a harmonically oscillating optical trap, we demonstrate that mechanical oscillations become tightly bounded to the isolated cantilevers rather than propagate away at specific driving parameters. The effect of dynamical localization is employed to induce a conductor-to-insulator-like transition in the two-mode mechanical system, which opens up new possibilities for further coherent control of transport phenomena in coupled-mechanical-resonator based lattice.

LeakSemantic: Identifying Abnormal Sensitive Network Transmissions in Mobile Applications

Mobile applications (apps) often transmit sensitive data through network with various intentions. Some transmissions are needed to fulfill the app's functionalities. However, transmissions with malicious receivers may lead to privacy leakage and tend to behave stealthily to evade detection. The problem is twofold: how does one unveil sensitive transmissions in mobile apps, and given a sensitive transmission, how does one determine if it is legitimate? In this paper, we propose LeakSemantic, a framework that can automatically locate abnormal sensitive network transmissions from mobile apps. LeakSemantic consists of a hybrid program analysis component and a machine learning component. Our program analysis component combines static analysis and dynamic analysis to precisely identify sensitive transmissions. Compared to existing taint analysis approaches, LeakSemantic achieves better accuracy with fewer false positives and is able to collect runtime data such as network traffic for each transmission. Based on features derived from the runtime data, machine learning classifiers are built to further differentiate between the legal and illegal disclosures. Experiments show that LeakSemantic achieves 91% accuracy on 2279 sensitive connections from 1404 apps.

Trust Exploitation and Attention Competition: A Game Theoretical Model

The proliferation of Social Network Sites (SNSs) has greatly reformed the way of information dissemination, but also provided a new venue for hosts with impure motivations to disseminate malicious information. Social trust is the basis for information dissemination in SNSs. Malicious hosts judiciously and dynamically make the balance between maintaining its social trust and selfishly maximizing its malicious gain over a long time-span. Studying the optimal response strategies for each malicious host could assist to design the best system maneuver so as to achieve the targeted level of overall malicious activities. In this paper, we propose an interaction-based social trust model, and formulate the maximization of long-term malicious gains of multiple competing hosts as a non-cooperative differential game. Through rigorous analysis, optimal response strategies are identified and the best system maneuver mechanism is presented. Extensive numerical studies further verify the analytical results.

FlowIntent: Detecting Privacy Leakage from User Intention to Network Traffic Mapping

The exponential growth of mobile devices has raised concerns about sensitive data leakage. In this paper, we make the first attempt to identify suspicious location-related HTTP transmission flows from the user's perspective, by answering the question: Is the transmission user-intended? In contrast to previous network-level detection schemes that mainly rely on a given set of suspicious hostnames, our approach can better adapt to the fast growth of app market and the constantly evolving leakage patterns. On the other hand, compared to existing system-level detection schemes built upon program taint analysis, where all sensitive transmissions as treated as illegal, our approach better meets the user needs and is easier to deploy. In particular, our proof-of-concept implementation (FlowIntent) captures sensitive transmissions missed by TaintDroid, the state-of-the-art dynamic taint analysis system on Android platforms. Evaluation using 1002 location sharing instances collected from more than 20,000 apps shows that our approach achieves about 91% accuracy in detecting illegitimate location transmissions.

Quantum enhanced feedback cooling of a mechanical oscillator

Laser cooling is a fundamental technique used in primary atomic frequency standards, quantum computers, quantum condensed matter physics and tests of fundamental physics, among other areas. It has been known since the early 1990s that laser cooling can, in principle, be improved by using squeezed light as an electromagnetic reservoir; while quantum feedback control using a squeezed light probe is also predicted to allow improved cooling. Here, we implement quantum feedback control of a micro-mechanical oscillator for the first time with a squeezed probe field. This allows quantum-enhanced feedback cooling with a measurement rate greater than it is possible with classical light, and a consequent reduction in the final oscillator temperature. Our results have significance for future applications in areas ranging from quantum information networks, to quantum-enhanced force and displacement measurements and fundamental tests of macroscopic quantum mechanics.

Joint remote preparation of an arbitrary four-qubit |\c{hi}>-type entangled state

We present two schemes for joint remote preparation of an arbitrary four-qubit j\c{hi}i -type entangled state via three three- and (N+1)-qubit GHZ states as the quantum channel, respectively. In these schemes, two senders (or N senders) share the original state which they wish to help the receiver to remotely prepare. To complete the JRSP schemes, several novel sets of mutually orthogonal basis vectors are introduced. It is shown that, only if two senders (or N senders) collaborate with each other, and perform projective measurements under suitable measuring basis on their own qubits respectively, the receiver can reconstruct the original state by means of some appropriate unitary operations and suitable C-NOT gates. Compared with the previous schemes for the JRSP of four-qubit |\c{hi}>-type state, the advantages of the present schemes are that the total successful probability of JRSP can reach 1 and the entanglement resource can be reduced

Predicting Social Status via Social Networks: A Case Study on University, Occupation, and Region

Social status refers to the relative position within the society. It is an important notion in sociology and related research. The problem of measuring social status has been studied for many years. Various indicators are proposed to assess social status of individuals, including educational attainment, occupation, and income/wealth. However, these indicators are sometimes difficult to collect or measure. We investigate social networks for alternative measures of social status. Online activities expose certain traits of users in the real world. We are interested in how these activities are related to social status, and how social status can be predicted with social network data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on connecting online activities with social status in reality. In particular, we focus on the network structure of microblogs in this study. A user following another implies some kind of status. We cast the predicted social status of users to the "status" of real-world entities, e.g., universities, occupations, and regions, so that we can compare and validate predicted results with facts in the real world. We propose an efficient algorithm for this task and evaluate it on a dataset consisting of 3.4 million users from Sina Weibo. The result shows that it is possible to predict social status with reasonable accuracy using social network data. We also point out challenges and limitations of this approach, e.g., inconsistence between online popularity and real-world status for certain users. Our findings provide insights on analyzing online social status and future designs of ranking schemes for social networks.

Classical analog of Stückelberg interferometry with two coupled mechanical resonators

Coupled nanomechanical resonators have recently attracted much attention for both fundamental studies in physics and broad applications in high-precession detection or sensing. By studying the Landau-Zener transitions and Rabi oscillation of two coupled resonators, it has been shown that such a two-mode system acts as a classical two-level system bearing the analog to a quantum mechanical two-level one. Here we construct a Stückelberg interferometer with two coupled cantilevers by driving the system through the avoided crossing twice. By measuring the non-adiabatic phase acquired at the Landau-Zener transition, we unveil an in-depth analog between the two-mode and quantum two-level systems. Our study opens up new opportunities for constructing interferometers with classical devices.
