Local-to-Global Sentence-Level Graph Reranking for Scientific Synthesis

Retrieval-augmented scientific synthesis aims to answer complex research questions by integrating information from multiple papers into comprehensive and well-grounded responses. Since the generator can only synthesize the information selected and organized by the reranker, the quality of the generated synthesis depends critically on the reranked results. However, most rerankers operate at the passage level, which leaves key methodological, empirical, and comparative information buried in long and flat contexts, weakening the grounding of generated claims. Moreover, existing rerankers mainly rely on independent query-candidate scoring which overlooks complementary, contextual, and contrasting relations across scientific candidates, limiting information coverage and the comprehensiveness of the resulting synthesis. To address these limitations, we propose LoG-Reranker, a local-to-global sentence-level graph reranking framework for scientific synthesis. LoG-Reranker performs role-aware local scoring to identify fine-grained, query-relevant sentences and then models their relations on a sentence graph across the candidate set to globally refine sentence rankings. Top-ranked sentences and their connected neighbors are organized into a structured input context for generator to produce more grounded and comprehensive synthesis. Extensive experiments on scientific synthesis and reranking benchmarks show that LoG-Reranker consistently outperforms competitive rerankers, yielding more reliable rankings and improving the quality of generated synthesis.

Learning to Predict Middle-Layer Attention in MLLMs for Visual Token Pruning

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) achieve strong performance across diverse vision-language tasks, but their efficiency is limited by the cost of processing numerous visual tokens. Visual token pruning can reduce this cost, but requires accurate token importance estimates. Recent studies have demonstrated that text-to-vision attention from middle language model layers can effectively guide visual token pruning, typically using attention from a predefined middle layer to select the visual tokens to retain. Two problems therefore remain. First, our analysis shows that the layer whose attention is most responsive to the question varies substantially across samples, making a fixed layer suboptimal. Second, obtaining attention from the appropriate middle layer requires processing numerous visual tokens through several language model layers, by which point considerable computation has already been spent. To address both problems, we propose Middle-layer Attention Prediction (MAP), which uses Question Contrastive Teacher Selection to identify a sample-specific teacher layer by contrasting attention under the original and reference questions, and distills attention from the selected layer into a lightweight predictor that estimates visual token importance from multi-modal input features. During inference, MAP combines the predicted importance scores with a diversity criterion to prune visual tokens before the first language model layer. Thus, MAP requires no attention maps for pruning and remains compatible with existing inference acceleration techniques. Across ten benchmarks on LLaVA-NeXT-7B, MAP retains 97.5% of the unpruned model performance with only 5.56% of the visual tokens, yielding a 3.09x end-to-end speedup.

Deferred Exposure of Future Trajectories for Verifiable Reasoning in Autonomous Driving VLMs

Recent Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models for autonomous driving (AD) increasingly utilize chain-of-thought (CoT) supervision to enhance the reasoning capabilities of their Vision-Language Model (VLM) components, yet existing annotation pipelines commonly expose the teacher model to the logged ground-truth (GT) future trajectory. We empirically show that this induces trajectory anchoring bias: teacher models rationalize the revealed outcome rather than infer a decision from scene evidence, producing less causally faithful CoTs and substantially more severe hallucinations, especially in causally challenging scenes. Removing the GT trajectory eliminates this shortcut, but open-ended trajectory generation entangles high-level decision-making with precise geometric synthesis and low-level dynamics. To make trajectory-level driving decisions verifiable without requiring open-ended trajectory synthesis, we introduce Autonomous-Driving Multiple-Choice Question (AD-MCQ), which casts planning as selection among explicit trajectory candidates. Taking this a step further, we propose Deferred Exposure of Future Trajectories for RLVR (DEFT-RLVR) to transform future trajectories from pre-decision anchors into post-decision verification targets. Experimental results show that DEFT-RLVR improves AD reasoning while preserving or even enhancing general visual capabilities. With VLM-only inference and controllable difficulty through candidate construction, AD-MCQ provides a flexible, scalable, and extensible foundation for future research on verifiable AD reasoning.

Covariant Locally Localized Gravity and vDVZ Continuity

The Karch-Randall braneworld concerns the physics of an AdS$_{d}$ brane embedded in an ambient gravitational AdS$_{d+1}$ spacetime. The gravitational theory induced on the AdS$_{d}$ brane has a very light but massive graviton. It has been established that the zero graviton mass limit of the $d$-dimensional graviton propagator is smooth at tree-level. Furthermore, this smoothness was conjectured to persist to the quantum level. This conjecture suggests that the massive graviton on the AdS$_{d}$ brane is due to spontaneous symmetry breaking, which is consistent with its holographic dual description. In this letter, we show that the zero mass limit of the partition function is a theory of a massless graviton and a decoupled massive vector. The zero mass limit is not the basic Randall-Sundrum II model, but a theory with these additional decoupled vector degrees of freedom coupled only to gravity. The proof relies on deriving the fully covariant description of the $d$-dimensional gravity theory which enables us to compute the one-loop partition function. At the end, we comment on the implications of this result to the physics of entanglement islands.

Seeing Page Curves and Islands with Blinders On

This paper summarizes recent discussions of the Page curve and the information paradox, and responds to the reasoning and examples from arXiv:2506.04311. We review arguments demonstrating that in quantum gravity the algebra of observables at infinity is complete, both in AdS and in asymptotically flat space. This completeness implies that the bulk Hilbert space in quantum gravity does not factorize along the radial direction, undermining a key common assumption in Hawking's argument for information loss and in initial derivations of the Page curve. As a consequence, in a standard theory of gravity, information does not ``emerge'' from a black hole in the manner suggested by the Page curve; rather, it is already encoded in asymptotic observables. Relatedly, the full black hole interior, and not just an ``island'', can be reconstructed from exterior data. Page curves and islands can be obtained by removing the Hamiltonian from the exterior algebra. This may be implemented operationally by restricting access to part of the asymptotic region (a detector with a ``blind spot'') or, in the special case of null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes, by formally discarding the Hamiltonian from the set of observables despite its physical accessibility. Such Page curves describe only the redistribution of information between measured and unmeasured degrees of freedom, rather than fundamental information recovery. Finally, Page curves and islands also arise when a black hole is coupled to a nongravitational bath, a setup that yields a nonstandard theory of gravity. We show how, even in this setting, the unusual localization of information in gravity provides a concrete physical mechanism for information transfer from the gravitational system into the bath.

Non-Hermitian Second-Order Topological Phases and Bipolar Skin Effect in Photonic Kagome Crystals

Non-Hermitian photonics provides a fertile platform for exploring phenomena with no Hermitian counterparts, including the non-Hermitian skin effect and exceptional points, with direct relevance for integrated photonic technologies. In this work, we investigate the properties of non-Hermitian second-order topological phases by constructing a photonic kagome crystal with balanced gain and loss, and reveal the interplay between higher-order topology and the non-Hermitian skin effect. We demonstrate that non-Hermiticity not only lifts the degeneracy of the topological corner modes but also drives bulk states to accumulate at corners, giving rise to bipolar non-Hermitian skin effect. By defining the point-gap topology, we uncover the fundamental topological origin of the non-Hermitian skin effect. More interestingly, the non-Hermitian skin effect induces a fundamental breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence based on the Bloch band theory. Our findings establish a general framework for non-Hermitian higher-order photonic systems and open avenues toward tailorable topological photonic devices exploiting non-Hermitian enhanced localization.

The Fate of Information Localizability and Holography in Quantum Gravity

The AdS/CFT correspondence states an equivalence between a quantum gravitational theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS$_{d+1}$) and a d-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT$_{d}$). The CFT$_{d}$ lives on the asymptotic boundary of the bulk AdS$_{d+1}$. Hence a local operator in the bulk of the AdS$_{d+1}$ should be reconstructable using operators living on the asymptotic boundary at the same instant. The existence of such a reconstruction is highly nontrivial and is conceptually puzzling if we think in terms of physically detecting a local bulk particle from the boundary of the AdS$_{d+1}$, as this signals a non-local information encoding scheme. In this paper, we explore situations where such non-locally encoded information can be observed in semiclassical gravity. We study examples where it is more efficient to utilize such effects in quantum gravity to detect a bulk excitation than to wait for signals to reach the boundary. Furthermore, we provide exemplified situations for which the protocol fails, and the non-locality of information is suppressed. These exemplified scenarios can be taken as explicit examples of the emergence of a perturbatively localized observer. In such cases, holography cannot be proven at the perturbative level in Newton's constant $G_{N}$ via the non-localizability of information.

Wet Hair: Global Symmetries in Entanglement Islands

A central conjecture in quantum gravity is the non-existence of global symmetries. As a fully unitary theory, there is no information loss in a UV complete quantum gravity theory. We see both these concepts reflected in the AdS/CFT correspondence, which tells us that dynamical processes in AdS are fully captured by a manifestly unitary CFT with no information loss. Furthermore, global symmetries of the CFT are dual to gauge symmetries in the AdS, which implies no global symmetry in the AdS. In this work, we provide concrete evidence for the connection between the non-existence of global symmetries and the absence of information loss in quantum gravity. We study the $\textit{island setups}$ in which a gravitational AdS is coupled with a nongravitational bath on its boundary. In such theories, the information in the AdS can be lost to the bath. We provide concrete examples with global symmetries in the island setup, from both the bottom-up and the top-down perspectives. We argue that these global symmetries are consistent due to $\textit{entanglement islands}$, in which holography is realized in a novel fashion. The global symmetries we construct are all mixed with spontaneously broken gauge symmetries. We will show that this fact has two implications: $\textbf{1)}$ The black hole hair is detectable in the bath (``wet hair"); $\textbf{2)}$ a resolution of a puzzle proposed by Harlow and Shaghoulian.

Generalized Yang-Mills theory: Interpolating between SDYM and YM

We construct a generalized Yang-Mills (YM) theory with two real couplings, interpolating continuously between the Self-Dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) limit (also called Chalmers-Siegel theory) and physical Yang-Mills theory. The kinetic coupling $\epsilon$ controls local fluctuations and anti-instanton weight, while the topological coupling $g$ controls the instanton weight. Both couplings are asymptotically free. We derive an exact all-order relation between the beta functions of the two couplings, revealing a Renormalization Group invariant, a new dimensionless expansion parameter $\Lambda_\epsilon / \Lambda_g$ into the study of YM theory. In the SDYM limit, the vacuum is populated by a finite density of topological defects, yet local correlators decay algebraically, consistent with a non-unitary conformal field theory. We confirm this mechanism via compactification on arbitrary size $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$, where the vacuum maps to a non-interacting ideal gas of monopole-instantons. As the kinetic coupling is turned on, a mass gap and confinement scale emerge.

LMM-IR: Large-Scale Netlist-Aware Multimodal Framework for Static IR-Drop Prediction

Static IR drop analysis is a fundamental and critical task in the field of chip design. Nevertheless, this process can be quite time-consuming, potentially requiring several hours. Moreover, addressing IR drop violations frequently demands iterative analysis, thereby causing the computational burden. Therefore, fast and accurate IR drop prediction is vital for reducing the overall time invested in chip design. In this paper, we firstly propose a novel multimodal approach that efficiently processes SPICE files through large-scale netlist transformer (LNT). Our key innovation is representing and processing netlist topology as 3D point cloud representations, enabling efficient handling of netlist with up to hundreds of thousands to millions nodes. All types of data, including netlist files and image data, are encoded into latent space as features and fed into the model for static voltage drop prediction. This enables the integration of data from multiple modalities for complementary predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can achieve the best F1 score and the lowest MAE among the winning teams of the ICCAD 2023 contest and the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Field-free superconducting diode effect of NbSe2 induced by strain

Superconducting diodes, similar to semiconductor diodes, possess unidirectional superconducting properties and are the fundamental units for constructing superconducting quantum computing, thus attracting widespread attention. At present, most of superconducting diodes require an external magnetic field or proximity effect to break time reversal symmetry (TRS). The cases of intrinsic superconducting diode effect (SDE) under zero magnetic field are relatively scarce, and there are still some puzzles especially regarding the reasons for the TRS breaking. Here, we not only report field free SDE in NbSe2 induced by strain, but also large values of the difference of Ic+ and |Ic-| ({\Delta}Ic) of 286 {\mu}A and the superconducting diode efficiency ({\eta}) of 6.76 % are achieved. Interestingly, {\Delta}Ic varies with the magnetic field and exhibits two distinct evolutionary behaviors with B-odd or B-even symmetry in various devices. We attribute this to the selective activation of two independent, spatially-orthogonal mechanisms: a stress-induced real-space polarity and a field-induced reciprocal-space asymmetric energy bands. In general, we propose an extremely effectively method to produce field free SDE, even when the material itself does not possess field free SDE, and provide new perspectives to understand the SDE which build new avenues for superconducting quantum devices.

Making the Case for Massive Islands

It has been established in both high and low spacetime dimensions that existing constructions of entanglement islands, at least in the study of black holes, are all in the context of massive gravity. In fact, later studies realized that the graviton mass is not an accident and it is necessary for the consistency of the holographic interpretation for entanglement islands. An important lesson we learned from these studies is that the graviton mass is a manifestation of the deep relationship between quantum entanglement and emergent geometry (EPR=ER). Nevertheless, various interesting questions and counter-arguments exist regarding whether this connection is of any relevance, either by modifying the definition of entanglement islands or denying the graviton mass as a physically relevant concept. In this paper, we will revisit the necessity of graviton mass for the consistency of entanglement islands and address the above questions in and out of the literature. Since the calculations in higher dimensions are already well understood, we will start with a demonstration of massive islands in a frequently used lower dimensional model, AdS$_{2}$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity coupled with transparent conformal matter fields, for which the relationship between energy dissipation and the graviton mass manifests. We will then discuss the necessity of graviton mass for entanglement islands in general situations and clarify the physical meaning of graviton mass. In the end, we will comment on the attempts to construct entanglement islands in massless gravity and suggest the search for a new type of entanglement wedges in holography. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recent progress, clarifying potential confusions and convey key messages to both experts and non-experts in the field.

Unified Semiclassical Theory of Nonlinear Hall Effect:Bridging Ballistic and Diffusive Transport Regime

The nonlinear Hall effect has attracted considerable attention and undergone extensive investigation in recent years. However, theoretical studies addressing size-dependent effects remain largely unexplored. In this work, we establish a unified semiclassical framework based on the Boltzmann transport equation, incorporating generalized boundary conditions to bridge the ballistic and diffusive transport regimes. Our analysis reveals that the nonlinear Hall effect arises from the combined action of two distinct mechanisms: the Berry curvature dipole and the Fermi-surface integral of Berry curvature. Furthermore, we investigate the Hall effect in topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), elucidating that the size dependence originates from competition between the two transport mechanisms. By connecting the two distinct regimes, our theoretical framework provides a comprehensive understanding of the nonlinear Hall effect in finite-sized systems, offering both fundamental insights and a useful analytical tool for more size-dependent investigations.

Lunar Orbital VLBI Experiment: motivation, scientific purposes and status

The Lunar Orbital VLBI Experiment (LOVEX) is a scientific component of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Project (CLEP) Chang'E-7. The spaceborne component of LOVEX is implemented onboard the relay satellite QueQiao-2, which was launched on 2024 March 20, and later placed into an elliptical selenocentric orbit. The LOVEX-specific payload consists of an X-band cryogenic receiver, a hydrogen maser frequency standard, and VLBI data formatting and acquisition electronics. Several components of the QueQiao-2 nominal onboard instrumentation, such as the 4.2-meter antenna, the data storage device, and the downlink communication system, contribute to the overall spaceborne VLBI instrumentation. This allows us to form a space radio telescope capable of co-observing with Earth-based radio telescopes in VLBI mode. In this space VLBI system, the length of the baseline extends up to approximately 380,000 km. This paper presents the LOVEX scientific objectives, architecture, instrumentation, pre-launch tests, in-flight verification and calibration, and the first in-flight detections of interferometric response (''fringes'') achieved through observations of the quasar AO 0235+164 and the Chang'E-6 orbital module, positioned at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2. These initial results demonstrate the successful performance of LOVEX, verifying its capability for both astronomical and spacecraft tracking observations at ultra-long VLBI baselines.

Light-induced Pairing Instability of Ultrafast Electron Beams with Space Charge Interactions

Ultrafast electron beams are essential for many applications, yet space-charge interactions in high-intensity beams lead to energy dissipation, coherence loss, and pulse broadening. Existing techniques mitigate these effects by using low-flux beams, preserving beam coherence into the quantum regime. Here, we propose a novel approach by treating the electrons as a strongly correlated Fermi gas rather than merely as an ensemble of charged point-like particles. We introduce a photon-induced pairing mechanism that generates a net attractive force between two electrons, thereby forming "flying bound states" analogous to Cooper pairs of conduction electrons in superconductors. Employing the setting of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM), we demonstrate that the effective interaction via single-photon exchange among PINEM electrons can suppress the inherent repulsive Coulomb interaction, enabling a pairing instability mediated by structured electromagnetic fields at near-resonant velocity matching regimes. Finally, we analyze the dynamics of the free-electron pairs in a bunched beam, underscoring the potential to facilitate a phase-coherent condensate of electrons, which can further enhance beam coherence and multi-particle correlation for high-intensity electrons.

Algebras, Entanglement Islands, and Observers

Some recent work has postulated the existence of an "observer" for a consistent definition of subregion algebras in gravitational universes. The subregion algebras consist of operators dressed to this "observer" and are typically Type II von Neumann algebras. Nevertheless, as opposed to standard physical systems, such an "observer" was postulated to have a Hamiltonian $\hat{H}_{\text{obs}}$ linear in phase space variable. This linear form suggests that the complete dynamics of such an "observer" should also be controlled by an external system or some underlying degrees of freedom within the system. In this paper, we show that this is exactly the case in the island model. In the island model, we have a gravitational asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime coupled with a non-gravitational bath, and the diffeomorphism symmetries in the gravitational AdS are spontaneously broken due to the bath coupling. In this setup, the "observer" is constructed using the Goldstone vector field associated with the spontaneously broken diffeomorphism symmetry, and the external system that also controls the dynamics of the "observer" is the non-gravitational bath. The basic consistency of the entanglement wedge reconstruction requires operators in the entanglement island to be dressed to this "observer". Thus, we establish the result that entanglement islands correspond to emergent Type II$_{\infty}$ von Neumann algebras from the holographic dual perspective. This result relies on assuming the geometric modular flow conjecture. Our study also raises a question for earlier constructions of Type II$_{1}$ von Neumann algebras.

It from ETH: Multi-interval Entanglement and Replica Wormholes from Large-$c$ BCFT Ensemble

We provide a derivation of the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula in 3D gravity for generic boundary subregion--including RT surface phase transitions--directly from the dual two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). Our approach relies on the universal statistics of the algebraic conformal data and the large-$c$ behavior of conformal blocks with Cardy boundaries involved. We observe the emergence of 3D multi-boundary black holes with Karch-Randall branes from entangled states of any number of CFT's with and without Cardy boundaries. The RT formula is obtained directly from the CFT in the high-temperature regime. Two direct applications are: $\textbf{1)}$ A simple derivation of the multi-interval entanglement entropy for the vacuum state of a single CFT; $\textbf{2)}$ A CFT-based detection of the emergence of replica wormholes in the context of entanglement islands and black hole microstate counting. Our framework yields the first holographic random tensor network that faithfully captures the entanglement structure of holographic CFTs. These results imply that bulk spacetime geometries indeed emerge from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in the dual field theory in the large-$c$ limi--a paradigm we refer to as $\textit{It from ETH}$.

Path Planning on Multi-level Point Cloud with a Weighted Traversability Graph

This article proposes a new path planning method for addressing multi-level terrain situations. The proposed method includes innovations in three aspects: 1) the pre-processing of point cloud maps with a multi-level skip-list structure and data-slimming algorithm for well-organized and simplified map formalization and management, 2) the direct acquisition of local traversability indexes through vehicle and point cloud interaction analysis, which saves work in surface fitting, and 3) the assignment of traversability indexes on a multi-level connectivity graph to generate a weighted traversability graph for generally search-based path planning. The A* algorithm is modified to utilize the traversability graph to generate a short and safe path. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method are verified through indoor and outdoor experiments conducted in various environments, including multi-floor buildings, woodland, and rugged mountainous regions. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can properly address 3D path planning problems for ground vehicles in a wide range of situations.
