Positive scalar curvature and an equivariant Callias-type index theorem for proper actions

For a proper action by a locally compact group $G$ on a manifold $M$ with a $G$-equivariant Spin-structure, we obtain obstructions to the existence of complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature. We focus on the case where $M/G$ is noncompact. The obstructions follow from a Callias-type index theorem, and relate to positive scalar curvature near hypersurfaces in $M$. We also deduce some other applications of this index theorem. If $G$ is a connected Lie group, then the obstructions to positive scalar curvature vanish under a mild assumption on the action. In that case, we generalise a construction by Lawson and Yau to obtain complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature, under an equivariant bounded geometry assumption.

Sensor-Movement-Robust Angle Estimation for 3-DoF Lower Limb Joints Without Calibration

Inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based 3-DoF angle estimation methods for lower limb joints have been studied for decades, however the calibration motions and/or careful sensor placement are still necessary due to challenges of real-time application. This study proposes a novel sensormovement-robust 3-DoF method for lower-limb joint angle estimation without calibration. A realtime optimization process, which is based on a feedback iteration progress to identify three joint axes of a 3-DoF joint, has been presented with a reference frame calibration algorithm, and a safe-guarded strategy is proposed to detect and compensate for the errors caused by sensor movements. The experimental results obtained from a 3-DoF gimbal and ten healthy subjects demonstrate a promising performance on 3-DoF angle estimation. Specially, the experiments on ten subjects are performed with three gait modes and a 2-min level walking. The root mean square error is below 2 deg for level walking and 5 deg for other two gait modes. The result of 2-min level walking shows our algorithms stability under long run. The robustness against sensor movement are demonstrated through data from multiple sets of IMUs. In addition, results from the 3-DoF gimbal indicate that the accuracy of 3-DoF angle estimation could be improved by 84.9% with our reference frame calibration algorithm. In conclusion, our study proposes and validates a sensor-movement-robust 3-DoF angle estimation for lowerlimb joints based on IMU. To the best of our knowledge, our approach is the first experimental implementation of IMUbased 3-DoF angle estimation for lower-limb joints without calibration.

Finite Temperature Behaviors of q-deformed Fermi Gases

During the last three decades, non-standard statistics for indistinguishable quantum particles has attracted broad attentions and research interests from many institutions. Among these new types of statistics, the q-deformed Bose and Fermi statistics, originated from the study of quantum algebra, are being applied in more and more physical systems. In this paper, we construct a q-deformed generalization of the BCS-Leggett theory for ultracold Fermi gases based on our previously constructed q-deformed BCS theory. Some interesting features of this q-deformed interacting quantum gas are obtained by numerical analysis. For example, in the ordinary Bose-Einstein Condensation regime, the gas presents a fermionic feature instead of bosonic feature if the deformation parameter is tuned suitably, which might be referred to as the q-induced ``Bose-Fermi'' crossover. Conversely, a weak sign of the ``Fermi-Bose'' crossover is also found in the ordinary weak fermionic regime.

Multi-Authority Attribute-Based Access Control with Smart Contract

Attribute-based access control makes access control decisions based on the assigned attributes of subjects and the access policies to protect objects by mediating operations from the subjects. Authority, which validates attributes of subjects, is one key component to facilitate attribute-based access control. In an increasingly decentralized society, multiple attributes possessed by subjects may need to be validated by multiple different authorities. This paper proposes a multi-authority attribute-based access control scheme by using Ethereum's smart contracts. In the proposed scheme, Ethereum smart contracts are created to define the interactions between data owner, data user, and multiple attribute authorities. A data user presents its attributes to different attribute authorities, and after successful validation of attributes, obtains attribute tokens from respective attribute authorities. After collecting enough attribute tokens, a smart contract will be executed to issue secret key to the data user to access the requested object. The smart contracts for multi-authority attribute-based access control have been prototyped in Solidity, and their performance has been evaluated on the Rinkeby Ethereum Testnet.

Index of Equivariant Callias-Type Operators and Invariant Metrics of Positive Scalar Curvature

We formulate, for any Lie group G acting isometrically on a manifold M, the general notion of a G-equivariant elliptic operator that is invertible outside of a G-cocompact subset of M. We prove a version of the Rellich lemma for this setting and use this to define the equivariant index of such operators. We show that G-equivariant Callias-type operators are self-adjoint, regular, and hence equivariantly invertible at infinity. Such operators explicitly arise from a pairing of the Dirac operator with the equivariant Higson corona. We apply the theory developed herein to obtain an obstruction to positive scalar curvature metrics on non-cocompact manifolds.

Access Control for Electronic Health Records with Hybrid Blockchain-Edge Architecture

The global Electronic Health Record (EHR) market is growing dramatically and expected to reach $39.7 billions by 2022. To safe-guard security and privacy of EHR, access control is an essential mechanism for managing EHR data. This paper proposes a hybrid architecture to facilitate access control of EHR data by using both blockchain and edge node. Within the architecture, a blockchain-based controller manages identity and access control policies and serves as a tamper-proof log of access events. In addition, off-chain edge nodes store the EHR data and apply policies specified in Abbreviated Language For Authorization (ALFA) to enforce attribute-based access control on EHR data in collaboration with the blockchain-based access control logs. We evaluate the proposed hybrid architecture by utilizing Hyperledger Composer Fabric blockchain to measure the performance of executing smart contracts and ACL policies in terms of transaction processing time and response time against unauthorized data retrieval.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions on cross-stitch flat band networks

We study the quench dynamics on cross-stitch flat band networks by a sudden change of the inter-cell hopping strength $J$. For quench processes with $J$ changing as $J=0\rightarrow J\neq0$, we give the analytical expression to the Loschmidt echo which possesses a series of zero points at critical times $t^{*}$, indicating where the dynamical quantum phase transitions occur. We further study the converse quench process with $J\neq0\rightarrow J=0$, and find a non-trivial example that the pre-quench quantum state is not an eigenstate of the post-quench Hamiltonian, whereas the Loschmidt echo $\mathcal{L}(t)\equiv1$ during this process. For both situations, these results are also illustrated numerically. Finally, we give a brief discussion on the observation of these predictions in the system of ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Equivariant Callias index theory via coarse geometry

The equivariant coarse index is well-understood and widely used for actions by discrete groups. We extend the definition of this index to general locally compact groups. We use a suitable notion of admissible modules over $C^*$-algebras of continuous functions to obtain a meaningful index. Inspired by work by Roe, we then develop a localised variant, with values in the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra. This generalises the Baum-Connes assembly map to non-cocompact actions. We show that an equivariant index for Callias-type operators is a special case of this localised index, obtain results on existence and non-existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature invariant under proper group actions, and show that a localised version of the Baum-Connes conjecture is weaker than the original conjecture, while still giving a conceptual description of the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra.

Polarization sensitive laser intensity inside femtosecond filament in air

Polarization dependence on clamping intensity inside femtosecond filament was experimentally measured in air. By tuning the laser pulse ellipse from linear polarization to circular polarization, the measured clamping intensity inside laser filament is gradually increased up to 1.7 times. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results by solving the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). The polarization sensitive clamping intensity inside filaments offers an important factor towards fully understanding the polarization related phenomenon observed so far.

Automatic Identification of Indicators of Compromise using Neural-Based Sequence Labelling

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) are artifacts observed on a network or in an operating system that can be utilized to indicate a computer intrusion and detect cyber-attacks in an early stage. Thus, they exert an important role in the field of cybersecurity. However, state-of-the-art IOCs detection systems rely heavily on hand-crafted features with expert knowledge of cybersecurity, and require a large amount of supervised training corpora to train an IOC classifier. In this paper, we propose using a neural-based sequence labelling model to identify IOCs automatically from reports on cybersecurity without expert knowledge of cybersecurity. Our work is the first to apply an end-to-end sequence labelling to the task in IOCs identification. By using an attention mechanism and several token spelling features, we find that the proposed model is capable of identifying the low frequency IOCs from long sentences contained in cybersecurity reports. Experiments show that the proposed model outperforms other sequence labelling models, achieving over 88% average F1-score.

Blockchain-inspired Event Recording System for Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles are capable of sensing their environment and navigating without any human inputs. However, when autonomous vehicles are involved in accidents between themselves or with human subjects, liability must be indubitably decided based on accident forensics. This paper proposes a blockchain-inspired event recording system for autonomous vehicles. Due to the inefficiency and limited usage of certain blockchain features designed for the traditional cryptocurrency applications, we design a new "proof of event" mechanism to achieve indisputable accident forensics by ensuring that event information is trustable and verifiable. Specifically, we propose a dynamic federation consensus scheme to verify and confirm the new block of event data in an efficient way without any central authority. The security capability of the proposed scheme is also analyzed against different threat and attack models.

Thermal Uhlmann Chern number from the Uhlmann connection for extracting topological properties of mixed states

The Berry phase is a geometric phase of a pure state when the system is adiabatically transported along a loop in its parameter space. The concept of geometric phase has been generalized to mixed states by the so called Uhlmann phase. However, the Uhlmann phase is constructed from the Uhlmann connection that possesses a well defined global section. This property implies that the Uhlmann connection is topologically trivial and as a consequence, the corresponding Chern character vanishes. We propose modified Chern character whose integral gives the thermal Uhlmann Chern number, which is related to the winding number of the mapping defined by the Hamiltonian. Therefore, the thermal Uhlmann Chern number reflects the topological properties of the underlying Hamiltonian of a mixed state. By including the temperature dependence in the volume integral, we also introduce the non-topological thermal Uhlmann Chern number which varies with temperature but is not quantized at finite temperatures. We illustrate the applications to a two-band model and a degenerate four-band model.

BCS thermal vacuum of fermionic superfluids and its perturbation theory

The thermal field theory is applied to fermionic superfluids by doubling the degrees of freedom of the BCS theory. We construct the two-mode states and the corresponding Bogoliubov transformation to obtain the BCS thermal vacuum. The expectation values with respect to the BCS thermal vacuum produce the statistical average of the thermodynamic quantities. The BCS thermal vacuum allows a quantum-mechanical perturbation theory with the BCS theory serving as the unperturbed state. We evaluate the leading-order corrections to the order parameter and other physical quantities from the perturbation theory. A direct evaluation of the pairing correlation as a function of temperature shows the pseudogap phenomenon results from the perturbation theory. The BCS thermal vacuum is shown to be a generalized coherent and squeezed state. The correspondence between the thermal vacuum and purification of the density matrix allows a unitary transformation, and we found the geometric phase in the parameter space associated with the transformation.

Positive Scalar Curvature and Poincare Duality for Proper Actions

For G an almost-connected Lie group, we study G-equivariant index theory for proper co-compact actions with various applications, including obstructions to and existence of G-invariant Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature. We prove a rigidity result for almost-complex manifolds, generalising Hattori's results, and an analogue of Petrie's conjecture. When G is an almost-connected Lie group or a discrete group, we establish Poincare duality between G-equivariant K-homology and K-theory, observing that Poincare duality does not necessarily hold for general G.

Topological phase transition in the quasiperiodic disordered Su-Schriffer-Heeger chain

We study the stability of the topological phase in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subject to the quasiperiodic hopping disorder. We investigate two different hopping disorder configurations, one is the Aubry-André quasiperiodic disorder without mobility edges and the other is the slowly varying quasiperiodic disorder with mobility edges. With the increment of the quasiperiodic disorder strength, the topological phase of the system transitions to a topologically trivial phase. Interestingly, we find the occurrence of the topological phase transition at the critical disorder strength which has an exact linear relation with the dimerization strength for both disorder configurations. We further investigate the localized property of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with the slowly varying quasiperiodic disorder, and identify that there exist mobility edges in the spectrum when the dimerization strength is unequal to 1. These interesting features of models will shed light on the study of interplay between topological and disordered systems.

Magnetic properties and hydrides precipitation observation of nitrogen doping niobium used for accelerator applications

Nitrogen doping study on niobium (Nb) samples used for the fabrication of the superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities has been carried out. The samples' surface treatment was attempted to replicate that of the SRF cavities, which includes heavy electropolishing (EP), nitrogen doping and the subsequent EP with different amounts of material removal. The magnetization curves of both the doped and the un-doped samples have been measured, from which the field of the first flux penetration and the upper critical field were extracted. The thermodynamic critical field, the the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, the penetration depth, the coherence length and the superheating field were calculated from the determined reversible magnetization curves. The superheating field of the doped samples is obviously smaller than that of the un-doped samples. Direct observation of hydrides precipitation on both the doped and the un-doped samples has been carried out using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with a cold stand at 80K, which showed that the amount of hydrides precipitation on the doped samples was reduced to varying degrees with different amounts of material removal. Under our doping recipe, the doped sample with subsequent EP material removal of 7-9 microns corresponds to the minimum nitrogen concentration that can effectively reduce the amounts of hydrides precipitation.

Novel mobility edges in the off-diagonal disordered tight-binding models

We study the one-dimensional tight-binding models which include a slowly varying, incommensurate off-diagonal modulation on the hopping amplitude. Interestingly, we find that the mobility edges can appear only when this off-diagonal (hopping) disorder is included in the model, which is different from the known results induced by the diagonal disorder. We further study the situation where the off-diagonal and diagonal disorder terms (the incommensurate potential) are both included and find that the locations of mobility edges change significantly and the varying trend of the mobility edge becomes nonsmooth. We first identify the exact expressions of mobility edges of both models by using asymptotic heuristic argument, and then verify the conclusions by utilizing several numerical diagnostic techniques, including the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. This result will perspectives for future investigations on the mobility edge in low dimensional correlated disordered system.

$q$-deformed Fermion in Many-Particle Systems and Its Application to BCS Theory

In recent decades, there have been increasing interests in quantum statistics beyond the standard Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics, such as the fractional statistics, quon statistics, anyon statistics and quantum groups, since they can provide some new insights into the cosmology, nuclear physics and condensed matter. In this paper, we study the many-particle system formed by the $q$-deformed fermions ($q$-fermion), which is realized by deforming the quantum algebra of the anticommutation relations. We investigate from a standard perspective of the finite temperature field theory and try to construct the finite temperature Green's function formalism for the free many-$q$-fermion system, then generalize it to the well known interacting fermionic system, the superconductor, and finally obtain a consistent $q$-deformed BCS ($q$BCS) theory. At low temperature, this theory predicts a Sarma-like ordered phase, and we call it the $q$-deformed Sarma phase. It also presents a symmetric phase diagram in the parameter space and new thermodynamic relations.
