Machine learning of XY model on a spherical Fibonacci lattice

We study the XY model on a spherical surface inspired by recently realized spherically confined atomic gases. Instead of a traditional latitude-longitude lattice, we introduce a much more homogeneous spherical lattice, the Fibonacci lattice, and use classical Monte Carlo simulations to determine spin configurations. The results clearly show that topological defects, in the form of vortices, must exist in the stable configuration on a sphere but vanish in a plane due to a mathematical theorem. Using these spin configurations as training samples, we propose a graph-convolutional-network based method to recognize different phases, and successfully predict the phase transition temperature. We also apply the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise, a powerful machine learning algorithm, to monitor the merging path of two vortices with different topological charges on the sphere during Monte Carlo simulations. Our results provide reliable predictions for future space-based experiments on ultracold atomic gases confined on spherical lattice in the microgravity environment.

Velocity-aware Antenna Selection in Predictor Antenna Systems

Moving relay (MR), which is a candidate solution for supporting in-vehicle users, has been investigated in different studies. Due to the mobile nature of the MR, acquiring channel state information at the transmitter side (CSIT) is challenging because of the fast-changing environment around the vehicle. On top of an MR, one can use predictor antenna (PA), i.e., an additional antenna in front of the receive antenna (RA), to obtain CSIT, and recent works have investigated the benefits of such a set up. PA-aided CSIT acquisition normally works with the help of different content information such as the location and the velocity of the MR. In this paper, we study the effect of velocity awareness on the PA system, and develop adaptive antenna selection schemes in PA-assisted MRs. Results show that, compared to no-CSIT schemes, a velocity-aware antenna selection-based PA system can improve the end-to-end throughput by an order of magnitude.

LSENet: Location and Seasonality Enhanced Network for Multi-Class Ocean Front Detection

Ocean fronts can cause the accumulation of nutrients and affect the propagation of underwater sound, so high-precision ocean front detection is of great significance to the marine fishery and national defense fields. However, the current ocean front detection methods either have low detection accuracy or most can only detect the occurrence of ocean front by binary classification, rarely considering the differences of the characteristics of multiple ocean fronts in different sea areas. In order to solve the above problems, we propose a semantic segmentation network called location and seasonality enhanced network (LSENet) for multi-class ocean fronts detection at pixel level. In this network, we first design a channel supervision unit structure, which integrates the seasonal characteristics of the ocean front itself and the contextual information to improve the detection accuracy. We also introduce a location attention mechanism to adaptively assign attention weights to the fronts according to their frequently occurred sea area, which can further improve the accuracy of multi-class ocean front detection. Compared with other semantic segmentation methods and current representative ocean front detection method, the experimental results demonstrate convincingly that our method is more effective.

Multi-modal Entity Alignment in Hyperbolic Space

Many AI-related tasks involve the interactions of data in multiple modalities. It has been a new trend to merge multi-modal information into knowledge graph(KG), resulting in multi-modal knowledge graphs (MMKG). However, MMKGs usually suffer from low coverage and incompleteness. To mitigate this problem, a viable approach is to integrate complementary knowledge from other MMKGs. To this end, although existing entity alignment approaches could be adopted, they operate in the Euclidean space, and the resulting Euclidean entity representations can lead to large distortion of KG's hierarchical structure. Besides, the visual information has yet not been well exploited. In response to these issues, in this work, we propose a novel multi-modal entity alignment approach, Hyperbolic multi-modal entity alignment(HMEA), which extends the Euclidean representation to hyperboloid manifold. We first adopt the Hyperbolic Graph Convolutional Networks (HGCNs) to learn structural representations of entities. Regarding the visual information, we generate image embeddings using the densenet model, which are also projected into the hyperbolic space using HGCNs. Finally, we combine the structure and visual representations in the hyperbolic space and use the aggregated embeddings to predict potential alignment results. Extensive experiments and ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model and its components.

Finite-temperature topological phase transitions of spin-$j$ systems in Uhlmann processes: General formalism and experimental protocols

The Uhlmann process is built on the density matrix of a mixed quantum state and offers a way to characterize topological properties at finite temperatures. We analyze an ideal spin-j quantum paramagnet in a magnetic field undergoing an Uhlmann process and derive general formulae of the Uhlmann phase and Loschmidt amplitude for arbitrary j as the system traverses a great circle in the parameter space. A quantized jump of the Uhlmann phase signifies a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) of the underlying process, which is accompanied by a zero of the Loschmidt amplitude. The exact results of j=1/2 and j=1 systems show topological regimes that only survive at finite temperatures but not at zero temperature, and the number of TQPTs is associated with the winding number in the parameter space. Our results pave the way for future studies on finite-temperature topological properties, and possible experimental protocols and implications for atomic simulators and digital simulations are discussed.

Multi-Level Attentive Convoluntional Neural Network for Crowd Counting

Recently the crowd counting has received more and more attention. Especially the technology of high-density environment has become an important research content, and the relevant methods for the existence of extremely dense crowd are not optimal. In this paper, we propose a multi-level attentive Convolutional Neural Network (MLAttnCNN) for crowd counting. We extract high-level contextual information with multiple different scales applied in pooling, and use multi-level attention modules to enrich the characteristics at different layers to achieve more efficient multi-scale feature fusion, which is able to be used to generate a more accurate density map with dilated convolutions and a $1\times 1$ convolution. The extensive experiments on three available public datasets show that our proposed network achieves outperformance to the state-of-the-art approaches.

Invariable mobility edge in a quasiperiodic lattice

In this paper, we study a one-dimensional tight-binding model with tunable incommensurate potentials. Through the analysis of the inverse participation rate, we uncover that the wave functions corresponding to the energies of the system exhibit different properties. There exists a critical energy under which the wave functions corresponding to all energies are extended. On the contrary, the wave functions corresponding to all energies above the critical energy are localized. However, we are surprised to find that the critical energy is a constant independent of the potentials. We use the self-dual relation to solve the critical energy, namely the mobility edge, and then we verify the analytical results again by analyzing the spatial distributions of the wave functions. Finally, we give a brief discussion on the possible experimental observation of the invariable mobility edge in the system of ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Predictor Antenna: A Technique to Boost the Performance of Moving Relays

In future wireless systems, a large number of users may access the networks via moving relays (MRs) installed on top of vehicles. One of the main challenges of MRs is rapid channel variation which may make channel estimation, and its following procedures, difficult. To address these issues, various schemes are designed, among which predictor antenna (PA) is a candidate. The PA setup refers to a system with two (sets of) antennas on top of a vehicle, where the PA(s) positioned in front of the vehicle is(are) utilized to predict the channel state information required for data transmission to the receive antennas (RAs) aligned behind the PA. In this paper, we introduce the concept and the potentials of PA systems. Moreover, summarizing the field trials for PAs and the 3GPP attempts on (moving) relays, we compare the performance of different PA and non-PA methods for vehicle communications in both urban and rural areas with the PA setup backhauled through terrestrial or satellite technology, respectively. As we show, with typical parameter settings and vehicle speeds, a single-antenna PA-assisted setup can boost the backhaul throughput of MRs, compared to state-of-the-art open-loop schemes, by up to 50%.

DANNet: A One-Stage Domain Adaptation Network for Unsupervised Nighttime Semantic Segmentation

Semantic segmentation of nighttime images plays an equally important role as that of daytime images in autonomous driving, but the former is much more challenging due to poor illuminations and arduous human annotations. In this paper, we propose a novel domain adaptation network (DANNet) for nighttime semantic segmentation without using labeled nighttime image data. It employs an adversarial training with a labeled daytime dataset and an unlabeled dataset that contains coarsely aligned day-night image pairs. Specifically, for the unlabeled day-night image pairs, we use the pixel-level predictions of static object categories on a daytime image as a pseudo supervision to segment its counterpart nighttime image. We further design a re-weighting strategy to handle the inaccuracy caused by misalignment between day-night image pairs and wrong predictions of daytime images, as well as boost the prediction accuracy of small objects. The proposed DANNet is the first one stage adaptation framework for nighttime semantic segmentation, which does not train additional day-night image transfer models as a separate pre-processing stage. Extensive experiments on Dark Zurich and Nighttime Driving datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for nighttime semantic segmentation.

Continuous Prediction of Lower-Limb Kinematics From Multi-Modal Biomedical Signals

The fast-growing techniques of measuring and fusing multi-modal biomedical signals enable advanced motor intent decoding schemes of lowerlimb exoskeletons, meeting the increasing demand for rehabilitative or assistive applications of take-home healthcare. Challenges of exoskeletons motor intent decoding schemes remain in making a continuous prediction to compensate for the hysteretic response caused by mechanical transmission. In this paper, we solve this problem by proposing an ahead of time continuous prediction of lower limb kinematics, with the prediction of knee angles during level walking as a case study. Firstly, an end-to-end kinematics prediction network(KinPreNet), consisting of a feature extractor and an angle predictor, is proposed and experimentally compared with features and methods traditionally used in ahead-of-time prediction of gait phases. Secondly, inspired by the electromechanical delay(EMD), we further explore our algorithm's capability of compensating response delay of mechanical transmission by validating the performance of the different sections of prediction time. And we experimentally reveal the time boundary of compensating the hysteretic response. Thirdly, a comparison of employing EMG signals or not is performed to reveal the EMG and kinematic signals collaborated contributions to the continuous prediction. During the experiments, EMG signals of nine muscles and knee angles calculated from inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals are recorded from ten healthy subjects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of continuously predicting lower-limb kinematics in an ahead-of-time manner based on the electromechanical delay (EMD).

A Lichnerowicz Vanishing Theorem for the Maximal Roe Algebra

We show that if a countable discrete group acts properly and isometrically on a spin manifold of bounded Riemannian geometry and uniformly positive scalar curvature, then, under a suitable condition on the group action, the maximal higher index of the Dirac operator vanishes in K-theory of the maximal equivariant Roe algebra. The group action is not assumed to be cocompact. A key step in the proof is to establish a functional calculus for the Dirac operator in the maximal equivariant uniform Roe algebra. This allows us to prove vanishing of the index of the Dirac operator in K-theory of this algebra, which in turn yields the result for the maximal higher index.

Functoriality for higher rho invariants of elliptic operators

Let $N$ be a closed spin manifold with positive scalar curvature and $D_N$ the Dirac operator on $N$. Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be two Galois covers of $N$ such that $M_2$ is a quotient of $M_1$. Then the quotient map from $M_1$ to $M_2$ naturally induces maps between the geometric $C^*$-algebras associated to the two manifolds. We prove, by a finite-propagation argument, that the \emph{maximal} higher rho invariants of the lifts of $D_N$ to $M_1$ and $M_2$ behave functorially with respect to the above quotient map. This can be applied to the computation of higher rho invariants, along with other related invariants.

Generating Informative CVE Description From ExploitDB Posts by Extractive Summarization

ExploitDB is one of the important public websites, which contributes a large number of vulnerabilities to official CVE database. Over 60\% of these vulnerabilities have high- or critical-security risks. Unfortunately, over 73\% of exploits appear publicly earlier than the corresponding CVEs, and about 40\% of exploits do not even have CVEs. To assist in documenting CVEs for the ExploitDB posts, we propose an open information method to extract 9 key vulnerability aspects (vulnerable product/version/component, vulnerability type, vendor, attacker type, root cause, attack vector and impact) from the verbose and noisy ExploitDB posts. The extracted aspects from an ExploitDB post are then composed into a CVE description according to the suggested CVE description templates, which is must-provided information for requesting new CVEs. Through the evaluation on 13,017 manually labeled sentences and the statistically sampling of 3,456 extracted aspects, we confirm the high accuracy of our extraction method. Compared with 27,230 reference CVE descriptions. Our composed CVE descriptions achieve high ROUGH-L (0.38), a longest common subsequence based metric for evaluating text summarization methods.

An equivariant Poincaré duality for proper cocompact actions by matrix groups

Let $G$ be a linear Lie group acting properly and isometrically on a $G$-spin$^c$ manifold $M$ with compact quotient. We show that Poincaré duality holds between $G$-equivariant $K$-theory of $M$, defined using finite-dimensional $G$-vector bundles, and $G$-equivariant $K$-homology of $M$, defined through the geometric model of Baum and Douglas.

On Delay-limited Average Rate of HARQ-based Predictor Antenna Systems

Predictor antenna (PA) system is referred to as a system with two sets of antennas on the roof of a vehicle, where the PAs positioned in the front of the vehicle are used to predict the channel state observed by the receive antennas (RAs) that are aligned behind the PAs. In this work, we study the effect of spatial mismatch on the accuracy of channel state information estimation, and analyze the delay-constrained average rate of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ)-based PA systems. We consider variable-length incremental redundancy (INR) HARQ protocol, and derive a closed-form expression for the maximum average rate subject to a maximum delay constraint. Moreover, we study the effect of different parameters such as the vehicle speed, the antenna distance and the rate allocation on the system performance. The results indicate that, compared to the open-loop case, the delay-limited average rate is considerably improved with our proposed PA-HARQ scheme.

A Semi-Linear Approximation of the First-Order Marcum $Q$-function with Application to Predictor Antenna Systems

First-order Marcum $Q$-function is observed in various problem formulations. However, it is not an easy-to-handle function. For this reason, in this paper, we first present a semi-linear approximation of the Marcum $Q$-function. Our proposed approximation is useful because it simplifies, e.g., various integral calculations including Marcum $Q$-function as well as different operations such as parameter optimization. Then, as an example of interest, we apply our proposed approximation approach to the performance analysis of predictor antenna (PA) systems. Here, the PA system is referred to as a system with two sets of antennas on the roof of a vehicle. Then, the PA positioned in the front of the vehicle can be used to improve the channel state estimation for data transmission of the receive antenna that is aligned behind the PA. Considering spatial mismatch due to the mobility, we derive closed-form expressions for the instantaneous and average throughput as well as the throughput-optimized rate allocation. As we show, our proposed approximation scheme enables us to analyze PA systems with high accuracy. Moreover, our results show that rate adaptation can improve the performance of PA systems with different levels of spatial mismatch.

Deep Poisoning: Towards Robust Image Data Sharing against Visual Disclosure

Due to respectively limited training data, different entities addressing the same vision task based on certain sensitive images may not train a robust deep network. This paper introduces a new vision task where various entities share task-specific image data to enlarge each other's training data volume without visually disclosing sensitive contents (e.g. illegal images). Then, we present a new structure-based training regime to enable different entities learn task-specific and reconstruction-proof image representations for image data sharing. Specifically, each entity learns a private Deep Poisoning Module (DPM) and insert it to a pre-trained deep network, which is designed to perform the specific vision task. The DPM deliberately poisons convolutional image features to prevent image reconstructions, while ensuring that the altered image data is functionally equivalent to the non-poisoned data for the specific vision task. Given this equivalence, the poisoned features shared from one entity could be used by another entity for further model refinement. Experimental results on image classification prove the efficacy of the proposed method.

Blockchain-enabled Identity Verification for Safe Ridesharing Leveraging Zero-Knowledge Proof

The on-demand mobility market, including ridesharing, is becoming increasingly important with e-hailing fares growing at a rate of approximately 130% per annum since 2013. By increasing utilization of existing vehicles and empty seats, ridesharing can provide many benefits including reduced traffic congestion and environmental impact from vehicle usage and production. However, the safety of riders and drivers has become of paramount concern and a method for privacy-preserving identity verification between untrusted parties is essential for protecting users. To this end, we propose a novel privacy-preserving identity verification system, extending zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) and blockchain for use in ridesharing applications. We design a permissioned blockchain network to perform the ZKP verification of a driver's identity, which also acts as an immutable ledger to store ride logs and ZKP records. For the ZKP module, we design a protocol to facilitate user verification without requiring the exchange of any private information. We prototype the proposed system on the Hyperledger Fabric platform, with the Hyperledger Ursa cryptography library, and conduct extensive experimentation. To measure the prototype's performance, we utilize the Hyperledger Caliper benchmark tool to perform extensive analysis and the results show that our system is suitable for use in real-world ridesharing applications.
