Uniform linear inviscid damping and enhanced dissipation near monotonic shear flows in high Reynolds number regime (I): the whole space case

We study the dynamics of the two dimensional Navier Stokes equations linearized around a strictly monotonic shear flow on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$. The main task is to understand the associated Rayleigh and Orr-Sommerfeld equations, under the natural assumption that the linearized operator around the monotonic shear flow in the inviscid case has no discrete eigenvalues. We obtain precise control of solutions to the Orr-Sommerfeld equations in the high Reynolds number limit, using the perspective that the nonlocal term can be viewed as a compact perturbation with respect to the main part that includes the small diffusion term. As a corollary, we give a detailed description of the linearized flow in Gevrey spaces (linear inviscid damping) that are uniform with respect to the viscosity, and enhanced dissipation type decay estimates. The key difficulty is to accurately capture the behavior of the solution to Orr-Sommerfeld equations in the critical layer. In this paper we consider the case of shear flows on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$. The case of bounded channels poses significant additional difficulties, due to the presence of boundary layers, and will be addressed elsewhere.

Bilingual Terminology Extraction from Comparable E-Commerce Corpora

Bilingual terminologies are important machine translation resources in the field of e-commerce, which are usually either manually translated or automatically extracted from parallel data. The human translation is costly and e-commerce parallel corpora is very scarce. However, the comparable data in different languages in the same commodity field is abundant. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of extracting e-commercial bilingual terminologies from comparable data. Benefiting from the cross-lingual pre-training in e-commerce, our framework can make full use of the deep semantic relationship between source-side terminology and target-side sentence to extract corresponding target terminology. Experimental results on various language pairs show that our approaches achieve significantly better performance than various strong baselines.

AdMix: A Mixed Sample Data Augmentation Method for Neural Machine Translation

In Neural Machine Translation (NMT), data augmentation methods such as back-translation have proven their effectiveness in improving translation performance. In this paper, we propose a novel data augmentation approach for NMT, which is independent of any additional training data. Our approach, AdMix, consists of two parts: 1) introduce faint discrete noise (word replacement, word dropping, word swapping) into the original sentence pairs to form augmented samples; 2) generate new synthetic training data by softly mixing the augmented samples with their original samples in training corpus. Experiments on three translation datasets of different scales show that AdMix achieves signifi cant improvements (1.0 to 2.7 BLEU points) over strong Transformer baseline. When combined with other data augmentation techniques (e.g., back-translation), our approach can obtain further improvements.

Supervised Contrastive Learning with Structure Inference for Graph Classification

Advanced graph neural networks have shown great potentials in graph classification tasks recently. Different from node classification where node embeddings aggregated from local neighbors can be directly used to learn node labels, graph classification requires a hierarchical accumulation of different levels of topological information to generate discriminative graph embeddings. Still, how to fully explore graph structures and formulate an effective graph classification pipeline remains rudimentary. In this paper, we propose a novel graph neural network based on supervised contrastive learning with structure inference for graph classification. First, we propose a data-driven graph augmentation strategy that can discover additional connections to enhance the existing edge set. Concretely, we resort to a structure inference stage based on diffusion cascades to recover possible connections with high node similarities. Second, to improve the contrastive power of graph neural networks, we propose to use a supervised contrastive loss for graph classification. With the integration of label information, the one-vs-many contrastive learning can be extended to a many-vs-many setting, so that the graph-level embeddings with higher topological similarities will be pulled closer. The supervised contrastive loss and structure inference can be naturally incorporated within the hierarchical graph neural networks where the topological patterns can be fully explored to produce discriminative graph embeddings. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with recent state-of-the-art methods.

Improving Pre-movement Pattern Detection with Filter Bank Selection

Pre-movement decoding plays an important role in movement detection and is able to detect movement onset with low-frequency electroencephalogram (EEG) signals before the limb moves. In related studies, pre-movement decoding with standard task-related component analysis (STRCA) has been demonstrated to be efficient for classification between movement state and resting state. However, the accuracies of STRCA differ among subbands in the frequency domain. Due to individual differences, the best subband differs among subjects and is difficult to be determined. This study aims to improve the performance of the STRCA method by a feature selection on multiple subbands and avoid the selection of best subbands. This study first compares three frequency range settings ($M_1$: subbands with equally spaced bandwidths; $M_2$: subbands whose high cut-off frequencies are twice the low cut-off frequencies; $M_3$: subbands that start at some specific fixed frequencies and end at the frequencies in an arithmetic sequence.). Then, we develop a mutual information based technique to select the features in these subbands. A binary support vector machine classifier is used to classify the selected essential features. The results show that $M_3$ is a better setting than the other two settings. With the filter banks in $M_3$, the classification accuracy of the proposed FBTRCA achieves 0.8700$\pm$0.1022, which means a significantly improved performance compared to STRCA (0.8287$\pm$0.1101) as well as to the cross validation and testing method (0.8431$\pm$0.1078).

Scalable algorithm simplification using quantum AND logic

Implementing quantum algorithms on realistic hardware requires translating high-level global operations into sequences of native elementary gates, a process known as quantum compiling. Physical limitations, such as constraints in connectivity and gate alphabets, often result in unacceptable implementation costs. To enable successful near-term applications, it is crucial to optimize compilation by exploiting the potential capabilities of existing hardware. Here, we implement a resource-efficient construction for a quantum version of AND logic that can reduce the cost, enabling the execution of key quantum circuits. On a high-scalability superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate low-depth synthesis of high-fidelity generalized Toffoli gates with up to 8 qubits and Grover's search algorithm in a search space of up to 64 entries; both are the largest such implementations in scale to date. Our experimental demonstration illustrates a scalable implementation of simplifying quantum algorithms, paving the way for larger, more meaningful quantum applications on noisy devices.

Linear vortex symmetrization: the spectral density function

We investigate solutions of the 2d incompressible Euler equations, linearized around steady states which are radially decreasing vortices. Our main goal is to understand the smoothness of what we call the spectral density function associated with the linearized operator, which we hope will be a step towards proving full nonlinear asymptotic stability of radially decreasing vortices. The motivation for considering the spectral density function is that it is not possible to describe the vorticity or the stream function in terms of one modulated profile. There are in fact two profiles, both at the level of the physical vorticity and at the level of the stream function. The spectral density function allows us to identify these profiles, and its smoothness leads to pointwise decay of the stream function which is consistent with the decay estimates first proved in Bedrossian-Coti Zelati-Vicol in [5].

Real-Time Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Image super-resolution is one of the most popular computer vision problems with many important applications to mobile devices. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, they are usually not optimized even for common smartphone AI hardware, not to mention more constrained smart TV platforms that are often supporting INT8 inference only. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image super-resolution solutions that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile or edge NPUs. For this, the participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained quantized models to do an efficient 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with all major mobile AI accelerators and are capable of reconstructing Full HD images under 40-60 ms while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Real-Time Video Super-Resolution on Smartphones with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Video super-resolution has recently become one of the most important mobile-related problems due to the rise of video communication and streaming services. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, the majority of them are too computationally expensive to run on portable devices with limited hardware resources. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based video super-resolution solutions that can achieve a real-time performance on mobile GPUs. The participants were provided with the REDS dataset and trained their models to do an efficient 4X video upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the OPPO Find X2 smartphone with the Snapdragon 865 SoC capable of accelerating floating-point networks on its Adreno GPU. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with any mobile GPU and can upscale videos to HD resolution at up to 80 FPS while demonstrating high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Experimental realization of phase-controlled dynamics with hybrid digital-analog approach

Quantum simulation can be implemented in pure digital or analog ways, each with their pros and cons. By taking advantage of the universality of a digital route and the efficiency of analog simulation, hybrid digital-analog approaches can enrich the possibilities for quantum simulation. We use a unique hybrid approach to experimentally perform a quantum simulation of phase-controlled dynamics resulting from a closed-contour interaction (CCI) within certain multi-level systems in superconducting quantum circuits. Due to symmetry constraints, such systems cannot host an inherent CCI. Nevertheless, by assembling analog modules corresponding to their natural evolutions and specially designed digital modules constructed from standard quantum logic gates, we can bypass such constraints and realize an effective CCI in these systems. Based on this realization, we demonstrate a variety of related and interesting phenomena, including phase-controlled chiral dynamics, separation of chiral enantiomers, and a new mechanism to generate entangled states based on CCI.

Bilingual Dictionary Based Neural Machine Translation without Using Parallel Sentences

In this paper, we propose a new task of machine translation (MT), which is based on no parallel sentences but can refer to a ground-truth bilingual dictionary. Motivated by the ability of a monolingual speaker learning to translate via looking up the bilingual dictionary, we propose the task to see how much potential an MT system can attain using the bilingual dictionary and large scale monolingual corpora, while is independent on parallel sentences. We propose anchored training (AT) to tackle the task. AT uses the bilingual dictionary to establish anchoring points for closing the gap between source language and target language. Experiments on various language pairs show that our approaches are significantly better than various baselines, including dictionary-based word-by-word translation, dictionary-supervised cross-lingual word embedding transformation, and unsupervised MT. On distant language pairs that are hard for unsupervised MT to perform well, AT performs remarkably better, achieving performances comparable to supervised SMT trained on more than 4M parallel sentences.

Non-Hermitian coherent coupling of nanomagnets by exchange spin waves

Non-Hermitian physics has recently attracted much attention in optics and photonics. Less explored is non-Hermitian magnonics that provides opportunities to take advantage of the inevitable dissipation of magnons or spin waves in magnetic systems. Here we demonstrate non-Hermitian coherent coupling of two distant nanomagnets by fast spin waves with sub-50 nm wavelengths. Magnons in two nanomagnets are unidirectionally phase-locked with phase shifts controlled by magnon spin torque and spin-wave propagation. Our results are attractive for analog neuromorphic computing that requires unidirectional information transmission.

Quantum Control via Stimulated Raman User-defined Passage

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a widely-used technique of coherent state-to-state manipulation for many applications in physics, chemistry, and beyond. The adiabatic evolution of the state involved in STIRAP, called adiabatic passage, guarantees its robustness against control errors, but also leads to problems of low efficiency and decoherence. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an alternative approach, termed stimulated Raman "user-defined" passage (STIRUP), where a parameterized state is employed for constructing desired evolutions to replace the adiabatic passage in STIRAP. The user-defined passages can be flexibly designed for optimizing different objectives for different tasks, e.g. minimizing leakage error. To experimentally benchmark its performance, we apply STIRUP to the task of coherent state transfer in a superconducting Xmon qutrit. We found that STIRUP completed the transfer more then four times faster than STIRAP with enhanced robustness, and achieved a fidelity of 99.5%, which is the highest among all recent experiments based on STIRAP and its variants. In practice, STIRUP differs from STIRAP only in the design of driving pulses; therefore, most existing applications of STIRAP can be readily implemented with STIRUP.

Nonlinear inviscid damping near monotonic shear flows

We prove nonlinear asymptotic stability of a large class of monotonic shear flows among solutions of the 2D Euler equations in the channel $\mathbb{T}\times[0,1]$. More precisely, we consider shear flows $(b(y),0)$ given by a function $b$ which is Gevrey smooth, strictly increasing, and linear outside a compact subset of the interval $(0,1)$ (to avoid boundary contributions which are incompatible with inviscid damping). We also assume that the associated linearized operator satisfies a suitable spectral condition, which is needed to prove linear inviscid damping. Under these assumptions, we show that if $u$ is a solution which is a small and Gevrey smooth perturbation of such a shear flow $(b(y),0)$ at time $t=0$, then the velocity field $u$ converges strongly to a nearby shear flow as the time goes to infinity. This is the first nonlinear asymptotic stability result for Euler equations around general steady solutions for which the linearized flow cannot be explicitly solved.

Inviscid damping near the Couette flow in a channel

We prove asymptotic stability of shear flows in a neighborhood of the Couette flow for the 2D Euler equations in the domain $\T\times[0,1]$. More precisely we prove that if we start with a small and smooth perturbation (in a suitable Gevrey space) of the Couette flow, then the velocity field converges strongly to a nearby shear flow. The vorticity, which is initially assumed to be supported in the interior of the channel, will remain supported in the interior of the channel, will be driven to higher frequencies by the linear flow, and will converge weakly to $0$ as $t\to\infty$, modulo the shear flows (zero mode in $x$).

Axi-symmetrization near point vortex solutions for the 2D Euler equation

We prove a definitive theorem on the asymptotic stability of point vortex solutions to the full Euler equation in 2 dimensions. More precisely, we show that a small, Gevrey smooth, and compactly supported perturbation of a point vortex leads to a global solution of the Euler equation in 2D, which converges weakly as $t\to\infty$ to a radial profile with respect to the vortex. The position of the point vortex, which is time dependent, stabilizes rapidly and becomes the center of the final, radial profile. The mechanism that leads to stabilization is mixing and inviscid damping.

Linear inviscid damping in Gevrey spaces

We prove linear inviscid damping near a general class of monotone shear flows in a finite channel, in Gevrey spaces. It is an essential step towards proving nonlinear inviscid damping for general shear flows that are not close to the Couette flow, which is a major open problem in 2d Euler equations.
