Benchmarking Large Language Models on Communicative Medical Coaching: a Novel System and Dataset

Traditional applications of natural language processing (NLP) in healthcare have predominantly focused on patient-centered services, enhancing patient interactions and care delivery, such as through medical dialogue systems. However, the potential of NLP to benefit inexperienced doctors, particularly in areas such as communicative medical coaching, remains largely unexplored. We introduce "ChatCoach", a human-AI cooperative framework designed to assist medical learners in practicing their communication skills during patient consultations. ChatCoach (Our data and code are available online: https://github.com/zerowst/Chatcoach)differentiates itself from conventional dialogue systems by offering a simulated environment where medical learners can practice dialogues with a patient agent, while a coach agent provides immediate, structured feedback. This is facilitated by our proposed Generalized Chain-of-Thought (GCoT) approach, which fosters the generation of structured feedback and enhances the utilization of external knowledge sources. Additionally, we have developed a dataset specifically for evaluating Large Language Models (LLMs) within the ChatCoach framework on communicative medical coaching tasks. Our empirical results validate the effectiveness of ChatCoach.

MatrixGate: A High-performance Data Ingestion Tool for Time-series Databases

Recent years have seen massive time-series data generated in many areas. This different scenario brings new challenges, particularly in terms of data ingestion, where existing technologies struggle to handle such massive time-series data, leading to low loading speed and poor timeliness. To address these challenges, this paper presents MatrixGate, a new and efficient data ingestion approach for massive time-series data. MatrixGate implements both single-instance and multi-instance parallel procedures, which is based on its unique ingestion strategies. First, MatrixGate uses policies to tune the slots that are synchronized with segments to ingest data, which eliminates the cost of starting transactions and enhance the efficiency. Second, multi-coroutines are responsible for transfer data, which can increase the degree of parallelism significantly. Third, lock-free queues are used to enable direct data transfer without the need for disk storage or lodging in the master instance. Experiment results on multiple datasets show that MatrixGate outperforms state-of-the-art methods by 3 to 100 times in loading speed, and cuts down about 80% query latency. Furthermore, MatrixGate scales out efficiently under distributed architecture, achieving scalability of 86%.

Exploring User Retrieval Integration towards Large Language Models for Cross-Domain Sequential Recommendation

Cross-Domain Sequential Recommendation (CDSR) aims to mine and transfer users' sequential preferences across different domains to alleviate the long-standing cold-start issue. Traditional CDSR models capture collaborative information through user and item modeling while overlooking valuable semantic information. Recently, Large Language Model (LLM) has demonstrated powerful semantic reasoning capabilities, motivating us to introduce them to better capture semantic information. However, introducing LLMs to CDSR is non-trivial due to two crucial issues: seamless information integration and domain-specific generation. To this end, we propose a novel framework named URLLM, which aims to improve the CDSR performance by exploring the User Retrieval approach and domain grounding on LLM simultaneously. Specifically, we first present a novel dual-graph sequential model to capture the diverse information, along with an alignment and contrastive learning method to facilitate domain knowledge transfer. Subsequently, a user retrieve-generation model is adopted to seamlessly integrate the structural information into LLM, fully harnessing its emergent inferencing ability. Furthermore, we propose a domain-specific strategy and a refinement module to prevent out-of-domain generation. Extensive experiments on Amazon demonstrated the information integration and domain-specific generation ability of URLLM in comparison to state-of-the-art baselines. ASETF: A Novel Method for Jailbreak Attack on LLMs through Translate Suffix Embeddings

The safety defense methods of Large language models(LLMs) stays limited because the dangerous prompts are manually curated to just few known attack types, which fails to keep pace with emerging varieties. Recent studies found that attaching suffixes to harmful instructions can hack the defense of LLMs and lead to dangerous outputs. However, similar to traditional text adversarial attacks, this approach, while effective, is limited by the challenge of the discrete tokens. This gradient based discrete optimization attack requires over 100,000 LLM calls, and due to the unreadable of adversarial suffixes, it can be relatively easily penetrated by common defense methods such as perplexity filters. To cope with this challenge, in this paper, we proposes an Adversarial Suffix Embedding Translation Framework (ASETF), aimed at transforming continuous adversarial suffix embeddings into coherent and understandable text. This method greatly reduces the computational overhead during the attack process and helps to automatically generate multiple adversarial samples, which can be used as data to strengthen LLMs security defense. Experimental evaluations were conducted on Llama2, Vicuna, and other prominent LLMs, employing harmful directives sourced from the Advbench dataset. The results indicate that our method significantly reduces the computation time of adversarial suffixes and achieves a much better attack success rate to existing techniques, while significantly enhancing the textual fluency of the prompts. In addition, our approach can be generalized into a broader method for generating transferable adversarial suffixes that can successfully attack multiple LLMs, even black-box LLMs, such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

Spectrum-Aware Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning for Diffusion Models

Adapting large-scale pre-trained generative models in a parameter-efficient manner is gaining traction. Traditional methods like low rank adaptation achieve parameter efficiency by imposing constraints but may not be optimal for tasks requiring high representation capacity. We propose a novel spectrum-aware adaptation framework for generative models. Our method adjusts both singular values and their basis vectors of pretrained weights. Using the Kronecker product and efficient Stiefel optimizers, we achieve parameter-efficient adaptation of orthogonal matrices. We introduce Spectral Orthogonal Decomposition Adaptation (SODA), which balances computational efficiency and representation capacity. Extensive evaluations on text-to-image diffusion models demonstrate SODA's effectiveness, offering a spectrum-aware alternative to existing fine-tuning methods.

TimeMIL: Advancing Multivariate Time Series Classification via a Time-aware Multiple Instance Learning

Deep neural networks, including transformers and convolutional neural networks, have significantly improved multivariate time series classification (MTSC). However, these methods often rely on supervised learning, which does not fully account for the sparsity and locality of patterns in time series data (e.g., diseases-related anomalous points in ECG). To address this challenge, we formally reformulate MTSC as a weakly supervised problem, introducing a novel multiple-instance learning (MIL) framework for better localization of patterns of interest and modeling time dependencies within time series. Our novel approach, TimeMIL, formulates the temporal correlation and ordering within a time-aware MIL pooling, leveraging a tokenized transformer with a specialized learnable wavelet positional token. The proposed method surpassed 26 recent state-of-the-art methods, underscoring the effectiveness of the weakly supervised TimeMIL in MTSC. The code will be available at https://github.com/xiwenc1/TimeMIL.

AI-Generated Text Detection and Classification Based on BERT Deep Learning Algorithm

AI-generated text detection plays an increasingly important role in various fields. In this study, we developed an efficient AI-generated text detection model based on the BERT algorithm, which provides new ideas and methods for solving related problems. In the data preprocessing stage, a series of steps were taken to process the text, including operations such as converting to lowercase, word splitting, removing stop words, stemming extraction, removing digits, and eliminating redundant spaces, to ensure data quality and accuracy. By dividing the dataset into a training set and a test set in the ratio of 60% and 40%, and observing the changes in the accuracy and loss values during the training process, we found that the model performed well during the training process. The accuracy increases steadily from the initial 94.78% to 99.72%, while the loss value decreases from 0.261 to 0.021 and converges gradually, which indicates that the BERT model is able to detect AI-generated text with high accuracy and the prediction results are gradually approaching the real classification results. Further analysis of the results of the training and test sets reveals that in terms of loss value, the average loss of the training set is 0.0565, while the average loss of the test set is 0.0917, showing a slightly higher loss value. As for the accuracy, the average accuracy of the training set reaches 98.1%, while the average accuracy of the test set is 97.71%, which is not much different from each other, indicating that the model has good generalisation ability. In conclusion, the AI-generated text detection model based on the BERT algorithm proposed in this study shows high accuracy and stability in experiments, providing an effective solution for related fields.

Ultraclean suspended graphene by radiolysis of adsorbed water

Access to intrinsic properties of a 2D material is challenging due to the absence of a bulk that would dominate over surface contamination, and this lack of bulk also precludes effective conventional cleaning methods that are almost always sacrificial. Suspended graphene and carbon contaminants represent the most salient challenge. This work has achieved ultraclean graphene, attested by electron energy loss (EEL) spectra unprecedentedly exhibiting fine-structure features expected from bonding and band structure. In the cleaning process in a transmission electron microscope, radicals generated by radiolysis of intentionally adsorbed water remove organic contaminants, which would otherwise be feedstock of the notorious electron irradiation induced carbon deposition. This method can be readily adapted to other experimental settings and other materials, to enable previously inhibited undertakings that rely on the intrinsic properties or ultimate thinness of 2D materials. Importantly, the method is surprisingly simple and robust, easily implementable with common lab equipment.

A Click-Through Rate Prediction Method Based on Cross-Importance of Multi-Order Features

Most current click-through rate prediction(CTR)models create explicit or implicit high-order feature crosses through Hadamard product or inner product, with little attention to the importance of feature crossing; only few models are either limited to the second-order explicit feature crossing, implicitly to high-order feature crossing, or can learn the importance of high-order explicit feature crossing but fail to provide good interpretability for the model. This paper proposes a new model, FiiNet (Multiple Order Feature Interaction Importance Neural Networks). The model first uses the selective kernel network (SKNet) to explicitly construct multi-order feature crosses. It dynamically learns the importance of feature interaction combinations in a fine grained manner, increasing the attention weight of important feature cross combinations and reducing the weight of featureless crosses. To verify that the FiiNet model can dynamically learn the importance of feature interaction combinations in a fine-grained manner and improve the model's recommendation performance and interpretability, this paper compares it with many click-through rate prediction models on two real datasets, proving that the FiiNet model incorporating the selective kernel network can effectively improve the recommendation effect and provide better interpretability. FiiNet model implementations are available in PyTorch.

FastHDRNet: A new efficient method for SDR-to-HDR Translation

Modern displays nowadays possess the capability to render video content with a high dynamic range (HDR) and an extensive color gamut .However, the majority of available resources are still in standard dynamic range (SDR). Therefore, we need to identify an effective methodology for this objective. The existing deep neural networks (DNN) based SDR to HDR conversion methods outperforms conventional methods, but they are either too large to implement or generate some terrible artifacts. We propose a neural network for SDR to HDR conversion, termed "FastHDRNet". This network includes two parts, Adaptive Universal Color Transformation (AUCT) and Local Enhancement (LE). The architecture is designed as a lightweight network that utilizes global statistics and local information with super high efficiency. After the experiment, we find that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both quantitative comparisons and visual quality with a lightweight structure and a enhanced infer speed.

COM3D: Leveraging Cross-View Correspondence and Cross-Modal Mining for 3D Retrieval

In this paper, we investigate an open research task of cross-modal retrieval between 3D shapes and textual descriptions. Previous approaches mainly rely on point cloud encoders for feature extraction, which may ignore key inherent features of 3D shapes, including depth, spatial hierarchy, geometric continuity, etc. To address this issue, we propose COM3D, making the first attempt to exploit the cross-view correspondence and cross-modal mining to enhance the retrieval performance. Notably, we augment the 3D features through a scene representation transformer, to generate cross-view correspondence features of 3D shapes, which enrich the inherent features and enhance their compatibility with text matching. Furthermore, we propose to optimize the cross-modal matching process based on the semi-hard negative example mining method, in an attempt to improve the learning efficiency. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed COM3D, achieving state-of-the-art results on the Text2Shape dataset.

Enhancing Boundary Segmentation for Topological Accuracy with Skeleton-based Methods

Topological consistency plays a crucial role in the task of boundary segmentation for reticular images, such as cell membrane segmentation in neuron electron microscopic images, grain boundary segmentation in material microscopic images and road segmentation in aerial images. In these fields, topological changes in segmentation results have a serious impact on the downstream tasks, which can even exceed the misalignment of the boundary itself. To enhance the topology accuracy in segmentation results, we propose the Skea-Topo Aware loss, which is a novel loss function that takes into account the shape of each object and topological significance of the pixels. It consists of two components. First, a skeleton-aware weighted loss improves the segmentation accuracy by better modeling the object geometry with skeletons. Second, a boundary rectified term effectively identifies and emphasizes topological critical pixels in the prediction errors using both foreground and background skeletons in the ground truth and predictions. Experiments prove that our method improves topological consistency by up to 7 points in VI compared to 13 state-of-art methods, based on objective and subjective assessments across three different boundary segmentation datasets. The code is available at https://github.com/clovermini/Skea_topo.

Probability Distribution of Hypervolume Improvement in Bi-objective Bayesian Optimization

Hypervolume improvement (HVI) is commonly employed in multi-objective Bayesian optimization algorithms to define acquisition functions due to its Pareto-compliant property. Rather than focusing on specific statistical moments of HVI, this work aims to provide the exact expression of HVI's probability distribution for bi-objective problems. Considering a bi-variate Gaussian random variable resulting from Gaussian process (GP) modeling, we derive the probability distribution of its hypervolume improvement via a cell partition-based method. Our exact expression is superior in numerical accuracy and computation efficiency compared to the Monte Carlo approximation of HVI's distribution. Utilizing this distribution, we propose a novel acquisition function - $\varepsilon$-probability of hypervolume improvement ($\varepsilon$-PoHVI). Experimentally, we show that on many widely-applied bi-objective test problems, $\varepsilon$-PoHVI significantly outperforms other related acquisition functions, e.g., $\varepsilon$-PoI, and expected hypervolume improvement, when the GP model exhibits a large the prediction uncertainty.

$\frac{5}{2}$ fractional quantum Hall state in GaAs with Landau level mixing

The Landau level mixing is the key in understanding the mysterious $5/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect in GaAs quantum well. Theoretical calculations with and without Landau level mixing show striking differences. However, the way to deal with the considerable strong Landau level mixing in GaAs is still unsatisfactory. We develop a method combining the screening and the perturbation theories to study the nature of the $5/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect in GaAs efficiently. The screening which has been succeed in explaining ZnO systems integrates out the low-energy Landau levels close to the related Landau level, while the other high-energy Landau levels are integrated out by the perturbation theory. We find that the ground states still hold the quasi-triplet degeneracy which implies the Pfaffian nature of the system. Furthermore, the particle-hole symmetry is only weakly violated since the particle-hole parity is close to unity. We propose that the ground state in the finite-size calculations can be approximated as a variational superposition of the Pfaffian and anit-Pfaffian states. In the experimental environment the symmetrized Pfaffian component is dominant, corresponding a thermal conductance around $2.5$ quanta can be understood consequently.

A robust and tunable Luttinger liquid in correlated edge of transition-metal second-order topological insulator Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$

The interplay between topology and interaction always plays an important role in condensed matter physics and induces many exotic quantum phases, while rare transition metal layered material (TMLM) has been proved to possess both. Here we report a TMLM Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ has the two-dimensional second-order topology (also a quadrupole topological insulator) with correlated edge states - Luttinger liquid. It is ascribed to the unconventional nature of the mismatch between charge- and atomic- centers induced by a remarkable double-band inversion. This one-dimensional protected edge state preserves the Luttinger liquid behavior with robustness and universality in scale from micro- to macro- size, leading to a significant anisotropic electrical transport through two-dimensional sides of bulk materials. Moreover, the bulk gap can be modulated by the thickness, resulting in an extensive-range phase diagram for Luttinger liquid. These provide an attractive model to study the interaction and quantum phases in correlated topological systems.

Continual Model-based Reinforcement Learning for Data Efficient Wireless Network Optimisation

We present a method that addresses the pain point of long lead-time required to deploy cell-level parameter optimisation policies to new wireless network sites. Given a sequence of action spaces represented by overlapping subsets of cell-level configuration parameters provided by domain experts, we formulate throughput optimisation as Continual Reinforcement Learning of control policies. Simulation results suggest that the proposed system is able to shorten the end-to-end deployment lead-time by two-fold compared to a reinitialise-and-retrain baseline without any drop in optimisation gain.

URL: Universal Referential Knowledge Linking via Task-instructed Representation Compression

Linking a claim to grounded references is a critical ability to fulfill human demands for authentic and reliable information. Current studies are limited to specific tasks like information retrieval or semantic matching, where the claim-reference relationships are unique and fixed, while the referential knowledge linking (RKL) in real-world can be much more diverse and complex. In this paper, we propose universal referential knowledge linking (URL), which aims to resolve diversified referential knowledge linking tasks by one unified model. To this end, we propose a LLM-driven task-instructed representation compression, as well as a multi-view learning approach, in order to effectively adapt the instruction following and semantic understanding abilities of LLMs to referential knowledge linking. Furthermore, we also construct a new benchmark to evaluate ability of models on referential knowledge linking tasks across different scenarios. Experiments demonstrate that universal RKL is challenging for existing approaches, while the proposed framework can effectively resolve the task across various scenarios, and therefore outperforms previous approaches by a large margin.
