Niche differentiation in the light spectrum promotes coexistence of phytoplankton species: a spatial modelling approach

The paradox of the plankton highlights the apparent contradiction between Gause's law of competitive exclusion and the observed diversity of phytoplankton. It is well known that phytoplankton dynamics depend heavily on two main resources: light and nutrients. Here we treat light as a continuum of resources rather than a single resource by considering the visible light spectrum. We propose a spatially explicit reaction-diffusion-advection model to explore under what circumstance coexistence is possible from mathematical and biological perspectives. Furthermore, we provide biological context as to when coexistence is expected based on the degree of niche differentiation within the light spectrum and overall turbidity of the water.

Deep learning facilitates fully automated brain image registration of optoacoustic tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

Multi-spectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) is an emerging optical imaging method providing multiplex molecular and functional information from the rodent brain. It can be greatly augmented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that offers excellent soft-tissue contrast and high-resolution brain anatomy. Nevertheless, registration of multi-modal images remains challenging, chiefly due to the entirely different image contrast rendered by these modalities. Previously reported registration algorithms mostly relied on manual user-dependent brain segmentation, which compromised data interpretation and accurate quantification. Here we propose a fully automated registration method for MSOT-MRI multimodal imaging empowered by deep learning. The automated workflow includes neural network-based image segmentation to generate suitable masks, which are subsequently registered using an additional neural network. Performance of the algorithm is showcased with datasets acquired by cross-sectional MSOT and high-field MRI preclinical scanners. The automated registration method is further validated with manual and half-automated registration, demonstrating its robustness and accuracy.

An ITO Graphene hybrid integrated absorption modulator on Si-photonics for neuromorphic nonlinear activation

The high demand for machine intelligence of doubling every three months is driving novel hardware solutions beyond charging of electrical wires given a resurrection to application specific integrated circuit (ASIC)-based accelerators. These innovations include photonic ASICs (P-ASIC) due to prospects of performing optical linear (and also nonlinear) operations, such as multiply-accumulate for vector matrix multiplications or convolutions, without iterative architectures. Such photonic linear algebra enables picosecond delay when photonic integrated circuits are utilized, via on-the-fly mathematics. However, the neurons full function includes providing a nonlinear activation function, knowns as thresholding, to enable decision making on inferred data. Many P-ASIC solutions performing this nonlinearity in the electronic domain, which brings challenges in terms of data throughput and delay, thus breaking the optical link and introducing increased system complexity via domain crossings. This work follows the notion of utilizing enhanced light-matter-interactions to provide efficient, compact, and engineerable electro-optic neuron nonlinearity. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a novel electro-optic device to engineer the shape of this optical nonlinearity to resemble a rectifying linear unit (ReLU) - the most-commonly used nonlinear activation function in neural networks. We combine the counter-directional transfer functions from heterostructures made out of two electro-optic materials to design a diode-like nonlinear response of the device. Integrating this nonlinearity into a photonic neural network, we show how the electrostatics of this thresholders gating junction improves machine learning inference accuracy and the energy efficiency of the neural network.

Multi-Modulation Network for Audio-Visual Event Localization

We study the problem of localizing audio-visual events that are both audible and visible in a video. Existing works focus on encoding and aligning audio and visual features at the segment level while neglecting informative correlation between segments of the two modalities and between multi-scale event proposals. We propose a novel MultiModulation Network (M2N) to learn the above correlation and leverage it as semantic guidance to modulate the related auditory, visual, and fused features. In particular, during feature encoding, we propose cross-modal normalization and intra-modal normalization. The former modulates the features of two modalities by establishing and exploiting the cross-modal relationship. The latter modulates the features of a single modality with the event-relevant semantic guidance of the same modality. In the fusion stage,we propose a multi-scale proposal modulating module and a multi-alignment segment modulating module to introduce multi-scale event proposals and enable dense matching between cross-modal segments. With the auditory, visual, and fused features modulated by the correlation information regarding audio-visual events, M2N performs accurate event localization. Extensive experiments conducted on the AVE dataset demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state of the art in both supervised event localization and cross-modality localization.

Deep-learning-based recognition of multi-singularity structured light

Structured light with customized complex topological pattern inspires diverse classical and quantum investigations underpinned by accurate detection techniques. However, the current detection schemes are limited to vortex beam with simple phase singularity. The precise recognition of general structured light with multiple singularities remains elusive. Here, we report a deep learning (DL) framework that can unveil multi-singularity phase structures in an end-to-end manner after feeding only two intensity patterns upon beam propagation captured via a camera, thus unleashing intuitive information of twisted photons. The DL toolbox can also acquire phases of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes with single singularity and other general phase objects likewise. Leveraging this DL platform, a phase-based optical secret sharing (OSS) protocol is proposed, which is based on a more general class of multi-singularity modes than conventional LG beams. The OSS protocol features strong security, wealthy state space and convenient intensity-based measurements. This study opens new avenues for vortex beam communications, laser mode analysis, microscopy, Bose-Einstein condensates characterization, etc.

A Modular Design of Continuously Tunable Full Color Plasmonic Pixels with Broken Rotational Symmetry

Color tuning is a fascinating and indispensable property in applications such as advanced display, active camouflaging and information encryption. Thus far, a variety of reconfigurable approaches have been implemented to achieve color change. However, it is still a challenge to enable a continuous color tuning over the entire hue range in a simple, stable and rapid manner without changes in configuration and material properties. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical continuously tunable plasmonic pixel scheme via a modular design approach to realize polarization-controlled full color tuning by breaking the intrinsic symmetry of the unit cell layout. The polarization-controlled full color tunable plasmonic pixels consist of three different types of color modules oriented at an angle of 60° with respect to each other, corresponding to three subtractive primary colors. Without changing the structural properties or surrounding environment, the structural colors can be continuously and precisely tuned across all hues by illuminating linearly polarized light with different polarization directions. Meanwhile, the plasmonic pixels can be flexibly customized for various color tuning processes, such as different initial output colors and color tuning sequences, through the appropriate choice of component modules and the elaborate design of module layouts. Furthermore, we extend the color tuning to achromatic colors, white or black, with the utilization of a single module or the introduction of a black module. The proposed polarization-controlled full color tunable plasmonic pixels hold considerable potential to function as next-generation color pixels integrated with liquid-crystal polarizers.

Nonconvex and Nonsmooth Sparse Optimization via Adaptively Iterative Reweighted Methods

We propose a general formulation of nonconvex and nonsmooth sparse optimization problems with convex set constraint, which can take into account most existing types of nonconvex sparsity-inducing terms, bringing strong applicability to a wide range of applications. We design a general algorithmic framework of iteratively reweighted algorithms for solving the proposed nonconvex and nonsmooth sparse optimization problems, which solves a sequence of weighted convex regularization problems with adaptively updated weights. First-order optimality condition is derived and global convergence results are provided under loose assumptions, making our theoretical results a practical tool for analyzing a family of various reweighted algorithms. The effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed formulation and the algorithms are demonstrated in numerical experiments on various sparse optimization problems.

Hidden wallpaper fermion and third-order topological insulator

Nonsymmorphic symmetry can induce exotic wallpaper fermions, e.g., hourglass fermion, fourfold-degenerate Dirac fermion, and Möbius fermion, as commonly believed only in nonsymmorphic wallpaper groups. Here, we extend the notion of wallpaper fermions to symmorphic wallpaper groups, and remarkably uncover the emergence of long-awaited third-order topological insulators. The symmetry analysis and k $\cdot$ p models reveal that nonessential symmetries play an essential role for obtaining the previously overlooked hidden surface spectrum. Based on this, we present the hourglass fermion, fourfold-degenerate Dirac fermion, and Möbius fermion in the (001) surface of Tl$_4$XTe$_3$ (X = Pb/Sn) with a symmorphic wallpaper group $p4m$. Remarkably, 16 helical corner states reside on eight corners in Kramers pair, rendering the first real electronic material of third-order topological insulator. A time-reversal polarized octupole polarization is defined to uncover the nontrivial third-order topology, as is implemented by the 2$^{nd}$ and 3$^{rd}$ order Wilson loop calculations. Our results could considerably broaden the range of wallpaper fermions and lay the foundation for future experimental investigations of third-order topological insulators.

Analyze and Design Network Architectures by Recursion Formulas

The effectiveness of shortcut/skip-connection has been widely verified, which inspires massive explorations on neural architecture design. This work attempts to find an effective way to design new network architectures. It is discovered that the main difference between network architectures can be reflected in their recursion formulas. Based on this, a methodology is proposed to design novel network architectures from the perspective of mathematical formulas. Afterwards, a case study is provided to generate an improved architecture based on ResNet. Furthermore, the new architecture is compared with ResNet and then tested on ResNet-based networks. Massive experiments are conducted on CIFAR and ImageNet, which witnesses the significant performance improvements provided by the architecture.

Coupling the socio-economic and ecological dynamics of cyanobacteria: single lake and network dynamics

In recent decades freshwater lakes have seen an increase in human presence. A common byproduct of this human presence is eutrophication, which readily results in harmful cyanobacteria blooms. In this work we propose a model that couples the socio-economic and ecological dynamics related to cyanobacteria systems. The socio-economic dynamics considers the choices a human population makes regarding whether or not to mitigate their pollution levels. These choices are based on various costs related to social ostracism, social norms, environmental concern and financial burden. The coupled model exhibits bistable dynamics, with one stable state corresponding to high mitigation efforts and low CB abundance, and the other to low mitigation efforts and high CB abundance. Furthermore, we consider social interactions among a network of lakes and present dynamic outcomes pertaining to various associated costs and social situations. In each case we show the potential for regime shifts between levels of cooperation and CB abundance. Social ostracism and pressure are shown to be driving factors in causing such regime shifts.

UniFaceGAN: A Unified Framework for Temporally Consistent Facial Video Editing

Recent research has witnessed advances in facial image editing tasks including face swapping and face reenactment. However, these methods are confined to dealing with one specific task at a time. In addition, for video facial editing, previous methods either simply apply transformations frame by frame or utilize multiple frames in a concatenated or iterative fashion, which leads to noticeable visual flickers. In this paper, we propose a unified temporally consistent facial video editing framework termed UniFaceGAN. Based on a 3D reconstruction model and a simple yet efficient dynamic training sample selection mechanism, our framework is designed to handle face swapping and face reenactment simultaneously. To enforce the temporal consistency, a novel 3D temporal loss constraint is introduced based on the barycentric coordinate interpolation. Besides, we propose a region-aware conditional normalization layer to replace the traditional AdaIN or SPADE to synthesize more context-harmonious results. Compared with the state-of-the-art facial image editing methods, our framework generates video portraits that are more photo-realistic and temporally smooth.

Initialization Matters: Regularizing Manifold-informed Initialization for Neural Recommendation Systems

Proper initialization is crucial to the optimization and the generalization of neural networks. However, most existing neural recommendation systems initialize the user and item embeddings randomly. In this work, we propose a new initialization scheme for user and item embeddings called Laplacian Eigenmaps with Popularity-based Regularization for Isolated Data (LEPORID). LEPORID endows the embeddings with information regarding multi-scale neighborhood structures on the data manifold and performs adaptive regularization to compensate for high embedding variance on the tail of the data distribution. Exploiting matrix sparsity, LEPORID embeddings can be computed efficiently. We evaluate LEPORID in a wide range of neural recommendation models. In contrast to the recent surprising finding that the simple K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) method often outperforms neural recommendation systems, we show that existing neural systems initialized with LEPORID often perform on par or better than KNN. To maximize the effects of the initialization, we propose the Dual-Loss Residual Recommendation (DLR2) network, which, when initialized with LEPORID, substantially outperforms both traditional and state-of-the-art neural recommender systems.

Paint Transformer: Feed Forward Neural Painting with Stroke Prediction

Neural painting refers to the procedure of producing a series of strokes for a given image and non-photo-realistically recreating it using neural networks. While reinforcement learning (RL) based agents can generate a stroke sequence step by step for this task, it is not easy to train a stable RL agent. On the other hand, stroke optimization methods search for a set of stroke parameters iteratively in a large search space; such low efficiency significantly limits their prevalence and practicality. Different from previous methods, in this paper, we formulate the task as a set prediction problem and propose a novel Transformer-based framework, dubbed Paint Transformer, to predict the parameters of a stroke set with a feed forward network. This way, our model can generate a set of strokes in parallel and obtain the final painting of size 512 * 512 in near real time. More importantly, since there is no dataset available for training the Paint Transformer, we devise a self-training pipeline such that it can be trained without any off-the-shelf dataset while still achieving excellent generalization capability. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves better painting performance than previous ones with cheaper training and inference costs. Codes and models are available.

Zipf Matrix Factorization : Matrix Factorization with Matthew Effect Reduction

Recommender system recommends interesting items to users based on users' past information history. Researchers have been paying attention to improvement of algorithmic performance such as MAE and precision@K. Major techniques such as matrix factorization and learning to rank are optimized based on such evaluation metrics. However, the intrinsic Matthew Effect problem poses great threat to the fairness of the recommender system, and the unfairness problem cannot be resolved by optimization of traditional metrics. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that incorporates Matthew Effect reduction with the matrix factorization framework. We demonstrate that our approach can boost the fairness of the algorithm and enhances performance evaluated by traditional metrics.

First-Generation Inference Accelerator Deployment at Facebook

In this paper, we provide a deep dive into the deployment of inference accelerators at Facebook. Many of our ML workloads have unique characteristics, such as sparse memory accesses, large model sizes, as well as high compute, memory and network bandwidth requirements. We co-designed a high-performance, energy-efficient inference accelerator platform based on these requirements. We describe the inference accelerator platform ecosystem we developed and deployed at Facebook: both hardware, through Open Compute Platform (OCP), and software framework and tooling, through Pytorch/Caffe2/Glow. A characteristic of this ecosystem from the start is its openness to enable a variety of AI accelerators from different vendors. This platform, with six low-power accelerator cards alongside a single-socket host CPU, allows us to serve models of high complexity that cannot be easily or efficiently run on CPUs. We describe various performance optimizations, at both platform and accelerator level, which enables this platform to serve production traffic at Facebook. We also share deployment challenges, lessons learned during performance optimization, as well as provide guidance for future inference hardware co-design.

Blockchain-empowered Edge Intelligence for Internet of Medical Things Against COVID-19

We have witnessed an unprecedented public health crisis caused by the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has severely affected medical institutions, our common lives, and social-economic activities. This crisis also reveals the brittleness of existing medical services, such as over-centralization of medical resources, the hysteresis of medical services digitalization, and weak security and privacy protection of medical data. The integration of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and blockchain is expected to be a panacea to COVID-19 attributed to the ubiquitous presence and the perception of IoMT as well as the enhanced security and immutability of the blockchain. However, the synergy of IoMT and blockchain is also faced with challenges in privacy, latency, and context-absence. The emerging edge intelligence technologies bring opportunities to tackle these issues. In this article, we present a blockchain-empowered edge intelligence for IoMT in addressing the COVID-19 crisis. We first review IoMT, edge intelligence, and blockchain in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. We then present an architecture of blockchain-empowered edge intelligence for IoMT after discussing the opportunities of integrating blockchain and edge intelligence. We next offer solutions to COVID-19 brought by blockchain-empowered edge intelligence from 1) monitoring and tracing COVID-19 pandemic origin, 2) traceable supply chain of injectable medicines and COVID-19 vaccines, and 3) telemedicine and remote healthcare services. Moreover, we also discuss the challenges and open issues in blockchain-empowered edge intelligence.
