GMLake: Efficient and Transparent GPU Memory Defragmentation for Large-scale DNN Training with Virtual Memory Stitching

Large-scale deep neural networks (DNNs), such as large language models (LLMs), have revolutionized the artificial intelligence (AI) field and become increasingly popular. However, training or fine-tuning such models requires substantial computational power and resources, where the memory capacity of a single acceleration device like a GPU is one of the most important bottlenecks. Owing to the prohibitively large overhead (e.g., $10 \times$) of GPUs' native memory allocator, DNN frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow adopt a caching allocator that maintains a memory pool with a splitting mechanism for fast memory (de)allocation. Unfortunately, the caching allocator's efficiency degrades quickly for popular memory reduction techniques such as recomputation, offloading, distributed training, and low-rank adaptation. The primary reason is that those memory reduction techniques introduce frequent and irregular memory (de)allocation requests, leading to severe fragmentation problems for the splitting-based caching allocator. To mitigate this fragmentation problem, we propose a novel memory allocation framework based on low-level GPU virtual memory management called GPU memory lake (GMLake). GMLake employs a novel virtual memory stitching (VMS) mechanism, which can fuse or combine non-contiguous memory blocks with a virtual memory address mapping. GMLake can reduce an average of 9.2 GB (up to 25 GB) GPU memory usage and 15% (up to 33% ) fragmentation among eight LLM models on GPU A100 with 80 GB memory. GMLake is completely transparent to the DNN models and memory reduction techniques and ensures the seamless execution of resource-intensive deep-learning tasks. We have open-sourced GMLake at https://github.com/intelligent-machine-learning/glake/tree/main/GMLake.

UCMCTrack: Multi-Object Tracking with Uniform Camera Motion Compensation

Multi-object tracking (MOT) in video sequences remains a challenging task, especially in scenarios with significant camera movements. This is because targets can drift considerably on the image plane, leading to erroneous tracking outcomes. Addressing such challenges typically requires supplementary appearance cues or Camera Motion Compensation (CMC). While these strategies are effective, they also introduce a considerable computational burden, posing challenges for real-time MOT. In response to this, we introduce UCMCTrack, a novel motion model-based tracker robust to camera movements. Unlike conventional CMC that computes compensation parameters frame-by-frame, UCMCTrack consistently applies the same compensation parameters throughout a video sequence. It employs a Kalman filter on the ground plane and introduces the Mapped Mahalanobis Distance (MMD) as an alternative to the traditional Intersection over Union (IoU) distance measure. By leveraging projected probability distributions on the ground plane, our approach efficiently captures motion patterns and adeptly manages uncertainties introduced by homography projections. Remarkably, UCMCTrack, relying solely on motion cues, achieves state-of-the-art performance across a variety of challenging datasets, including MOT17, MOT20, DanceTrack and KITTI. Verifying Concurrent Stacks by Divergence-Sensitive Bisimulation

The verification of linearizability -- a key correctness criterion for concurrent objects -- is based on trace refinement whose checking is PSPACE-complete. This paper suggests to use \emph{branching} bisimulation instead. Our approach is based on comparing an abstract specification in which object methods are executed atomically to a real object program. Exploiting divergence sensitivity, this also applies to progress properties such as lock-freedom. These results enable the use of \emph{polynomial-time} divergence-sensitive branching bisimulation checking techniques for verifying linearizability and progress. We conducted the experiment on concurrent lock-free stacks to validate the efficiency and effectiveness of our methods.

Possible Meissner effect near room temperature in copper-substituted lead apatite

With copper-substituted lead apatite below room temperature, we observe diamagnetic dc magnetization under magnetic field of 25 Oe with remarkable bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling measurements, and under 200 Oe it changes to be paramagnetism. A glassy memory effect is found during cooling. Typical hysteresis loops for superconductors are detected below 250 K, along with an asymmetry between forward and backward sweep of magnetic field. Our experiment suggests at room temperature the Meissner effect is possibly present in this material.

Tailoring coherent microwave emission from a solid-state hybrid system for room-temperature microwave quantum electronics

Quantum electronics operating in the microwave domain are burgeoning and becoming essential building blocks of quantum computers, sensors and communication devices. However, the field of microwave quantum electronics has long been dominated by the need for cryogenic conditions to maintain the delicate quantum characteristics. Here we report on a solid-state hybrid system, constituted by a photo-excited pentacene triplet spin ensemble coupled to a dielectric resonator, that is for the first time capable of both coherent microwave quantum amplification and oscillation at X band via the masing process at room temperature. By incorporating external driving and active dissipation control into the hybrid system, we achieve efficient tuning of the maser emission characteristics at around 9.4 GHz, which is key to optimizing the performance of the maser device. Our work not only pushes the boundaries of the operating frequency and functionality of the existing pentacene masers, but also demonstrate a universal route for controlling the masing process at room temperature, highlighting opportunities for optimizing emerging solid-state masers for quantum information processing and communication.

Breakdown modes of capacitively coupled plasma II: unsustainable discharges

In this work, the one-dimensional implicit particle-in-cell/Monte-Carlo collision code (PIC/MCC) is used to study the discharge of a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) under extremely low pressure driven by high-frequency rf power in pure argon. With the introduction of high-coefficient electron-induced secondary electron emission (ESEE) and a blocking capacitor, the discharge that cannot be sustained shows a variety of different characteristics: including the normal failure discharge (NFD) of the electron avalanche, bias failure discharge caused by the charging effect of the blocking capacitor, and runaway failure discharge caused by the decrease in the ESEE rate during the forming of the sheath. The discharges in low-pressure regions exhibit a range of discharge characteristics, the sustainable discharges of which have been analyzed in more detail. The study of unsustainable discharge helps to find the reasons for failure discharge and then determine the parameters of sustainable discharge, which is of great value in preventing plasma crack, equipment product yield, and equipment safety to help prevent industrial losses.

Multi-Scale and Multi-Modal Contrastive Learning Network for Biomedical Time Series

Multi-modal biomedical time series (MBTS) data offers a holistic view of the physiological state, holding significant importance in various bio-medical applications. Owing to inherent noise and distribution gaps across different modalities, MBTS can be complex to model. Various deep learning models have been developed to learn representations of MBTS but still fall short in robustness due to the ignorance of modal-to-modal variations. This paper presents a multi-scale and multi-modal biomedical time series representation learning (MBSL) network with contrastive learning to migrate these variations. Firstly, MBTS is grouped based on inter-modal distances, then each group with minimum intra-modal variations can be effectively modeled by individual encoders. Besides, to enhance the multi-scale feature extraction (encoder), various patch lengths and mask ratios are designed to generate tokens with semantic information at different scales and diverse contextual perspectives respectively. Finally, cross-modal contrastive learning is proposed to maximize consistency among inter-modal groups, maintaining useful information and eliminating noises. Experiments against four bio-medical applications show that MBSL outperforms state-of-the-art models by 33.9% mean average errors (MAE) in respiration rate, by 13.8% MAE in exercise heart rate, by 1.41% accuracy in human activity recognition, and by 1.14% F1-score in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

Breakdown modes of capacitively coupled plasma I: transitions from glow discharge to multipactor

In this work, a one-dimensional direct implicit particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC/MCC) code is used to study the capacitive discharge driven under 60 MHz rf power in the background gas of pure argon. The electron-induced secondary electron emission (ESEE) model suitable for SiO$_2$ electrode is taken into account. Several discharge modes are found in the transition region between the higher-pressure glow discharge and the abnormal multipactor discharge in this simulation. In a nerrow voltage range of hundreds of volts, the abnormal multipactor will transform to normal multipactor with the contining decrease of pressure. The characteristic of the three sustainale discharges are given and anaysed, and their fomation porcess are discussed. These new discharges have higher electron energy and electron flux at the boundary and are mainly sustained by higher electrode-induced SEE coefficient and high frequency. The appearence of the two multipactor modes in 60 MHz range might broaden the theory of gas discharge and expand the application of capacitive discharges.

Wasserstein-$1$ distance and nonuniform Berry-Esseen bound for a supercritical branching process in a random environment

Let $ (Z_{n})_{n\geq 0} $ be a supercritical branching process in an independent and identically distributed random environment. We establish an optimal convergence rate in the Wasserstein-$1$ distance for the process $ (Z_{n})_{n\geq 0} $, which completes a result of Grama et al. [Stochastic Process. Appl., 127(4), 1255-1281, 2017]. Moreover, an exponential nonuniform Berry-Esseen bound is also given. At last, some applications of the main results to the confidence interval estimation for the criticality parameter and the population size $Z_n$ are discussed.

Throughput Maximization for Intelligent Refracting Surface Assisted mmWave High-Speed Train Communications

With the increasing demands from passengers for data-intensive services, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an effective technique to release the transmission pressure on high speed train (HST) networks. However, mmWave signals ncounter severe losses when passing through the carriage, which decreases the quality of services on board. In this paper, we investigate an intelligent refracting surface (IRS)-assisted HST communication system. Herein, an IRS is deployed on the train window to dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, and a hybrid time division multiple access-nonorthogonal multiple access scheme is leveraged for interference mitigation. We aim to maximize the overall throughput while taking into account the constraints imposed by base station beamforming, IRS discrete phase shifts and transmit power. To obtain a practical solution, we employ an alternating optimization method and propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, the successive convex approximation method and branch and bound algorithm are leveraged for IRS phase shift design. In the second stage, the Lagrangian multiplier method is utilized for power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS adoption and power allocation for throughput improvement in mmWave HST networks.

Asynchronous multi-class traffic management in wide area networks

The emergence of new applications brings multi-class traffic with diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements to wide area networks (WANs), motivating research in traffic engineering (TE). In recent years, novel centralized and hierarchical TE schemes have used heuristic or machine learning techniques to orchestrate resources in closed systems such as datacenter networks. However, these schemes suffer from long delivery delays and high control overhead when applied to general WANs. To provide low-delay services, this paper proposes an asynchronous multi-class traffic management (AMTM) scheme. We first establish an asynchronous TE paradigm in which distributed nodes locally perform low-complexity and low-delay traffic control based on link prices, and the TE server updates link prices to eliminate decision conflicts between edge nodes. By modeling the asynchronous TE paradigm as a control system with non-negligible control loop delay, we find that the traditional pricing strategy cannot simultaneously achieve a low packet loss rate and a low flow delivery delay. To address this issue, we propose a new pricing strategy based on the observations of virtual queues in intermediate nodes. We also present a system design and related algorithms that utilize a dynamic step size mechanism of link price update. Simulation results show that AMTM can effectively reduce the end-to-end flow delivery delay.

Local environment-based machine learning for molecular adsorption energy prediction

Most machine learning (ML) models in Materials Science are developed by global geometric features, often falling short in describing localized characteristics, like molecular adsorption on materials. In this study, we introduce a local environment framework that extracts local features from crystal structures to portray the environment surrounding specific adsorption sites. Upon OC20 database (~20,000 3D entries), we apply our local environment framework on several ML models, such as random forest, convolutional neural network, and graph neural network. It is found that our framework achieves remarkable prediction accuracy in predicting molecular adsorption energy, significantly outperforming other examined global-environment-based models. Moreover, the employment of this framework reduces data requirements and augments computational speed, specifically for deep learning algorithms. Finally, we directly apply our Local Environment ResNet (LERN) on a small 2DMatPedia database (~2,000 2D entries), which also achieves highly accurate prediction, demonstrating the model transferability and remarkable data efficiency. Overall, the prediction accuracy, data-utilization efficiency, and transferability of our local-environment-based ML framework hold a promising high applicability across a broad molecular adsorption field, such as catalysis and sensor technologies.

LE-SSL-MOS: Self-Supervised Learning MOS Prediction with Listener Enhancement

Recently, researchers have shown an increasing interest in automatically predicting the subjective evaluation for speech synthesis systems. This prediction is a challenging task, especially on the out-of-domain test set. In this paper, we proposed a novel fusion model for MOS prediction that combines supervised and unsupervised approaches. In the supervised aspect, we developed an SSL-based predictor called LE-SSL-MOS. The LE-SSL-MOS utilizes pre-trained self-supervised learning models and further improves prediction accuracy by utilizing the opinion scores of each utterance in the listener enhancement branch. In the unsupervised aspect, two steps are contained: we fine-tuned the unit language model (ULM) using highly intelligible domain data to improve the correlation of an unsupervised metric - SpeechLMScore. Another is that we utilized ASR confidence as a new metric with the help of ensemble learning. To our knowledge, this is the first architecture that fuses supervised and unsupervised methods for MOS prediction. With these approaches, our experimental results on the VoiceMOS Challenge 2023 show that LE-SSL-MOS performs better than the baseline. Our fusion system achieved an absolute improvement of 13% over LE-SSL-MOS on the noisy and enhanced speech track. Our system ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the French speech synthesis track and the challenge's noisy and enhanced speech track.

Entire curves generating all shapes of Nevanlinna currents

First, we show that every complex torus $\mathbb{T}$ contains some entire curve $g: \mathbb{C}\rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ such that the concentric holomorphic discs $\{g\restriction_{\overline{\mathbb D}_{r}}\}_{r>0}$ can generate all the Nevanlinna/Ahlfors currents on $\mathbb T$ at cohomological level. This confirms an anticipation of Sibony. Developing further our new method, we can construct some twisted entire curve $f: \mathbb{C}\rightarrow \mathbb{CP}^1\times E$ in the product of the rational curve $\mathbb{CP}^1$ and an elliptic curve $E$, such that, concerning Siu's decomposition, demanding any cardinality $|J|\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geqslant 0}\cup \{\infty\}$ and that $\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{diff}}$ is trivial ($|J|\geqslant 1$) or not ($|J|\geqslant 0$), we can always find a sequence of concentric holomorphic discs $\{f\restriction_{\overline{\mathbb D}_{r_j}}\}_{j \geqslant 1}$ to generate a Nevanlinna/Ahlfors current $\mathcal{T}=\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{alg}}+\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{diff}}$ with the singular part $\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{alg}}=\sum_{j\in J} \,λ_j\cdot[\mathsf C_j]$ in the desired shape. This fulfills the missing case where $|J|=0$ in the previous work of Huynh-Xie. By a result of Duval, each $\mathsf C_j$ must be rational or elliptic. We will show that there is no a priori restriction on the numbers of rational and elliptic components in the support of $\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{alg}}$, thus answering a question of Yau and Zhou. Moreover, we will show that the positive coefficients $\{λ_j\}_{j\in J}$ can be arbitrary as long as the total mass of $\mathcal{T}_{\mathrm{alg}}$ is less than or equal to $1$. Our results foreshadow striking holomorphic flexibility of entire curves in Oka geometry, which deserves further exploration.

Robust magnetic proximity induced anomalous Hall effect in a room temperature van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductor based 2D heterostructure

Developing novel high-temperature van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductor materials and investigating their interface coupling effects with two-dimensional topological semimetals are pivotal for advancing next-generation spintronic and quantum devices. However, most van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors exhibit ferromagnetism only at low temperatures, limiting the proximity research on their interfaces with topological semimetals. Here, we report an intrinsic, van der Waals layered room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor crystal, FeCr0.5Ga1.5Se4 (FCGS), with a Curie temperature as high as 370 K, setting a new record for van der Waals ferromagnetic semiconductors. The saturation magnetization at low temperature (2 K) and room temperature (300 K) reaches 8.2 emu/g and 2.7 emu/g, respectively. Furthermore, FCGS possesses a bandgap of approximately 1.2 eV, which is comparable to the widely used commercial silicon. The FCGS/graphene heterostructure exhibits an impeccably smooth and gapless interface, thereby inducing a robust magnetic proximity coupling effect between FCGS and graphene. After the proximity coupling, graphene undergoes a charge carrier transition from electrons to holes, accompanied by a transition from non-magnetic to ferromagnetic transport behavior with robust anomalous Hall effect. Notably, the anomalous Hall effect remains robust even temperatures up to 400 K.

An Improved Composition Theorem of a Universal Relation and Most Functions via Effective Restriction

Recently, Ivan Mihajlin and Alexander Smal proved a composition theorem of a universal relation and some function via so called xor composition, that is there exists some function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ such that $\textsf{CC}(\text{U}_n \diamond \text{KW}_f) \geq 1.5n-o(n)$ where $\textsf{CC}$ denotes the communication complexity of the problem. In this paper, we significantly improve their result and present an asymptotically tight and much more general composition theorem of a universal relation and most functions, that is for most functions $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ we have $\textsf{CC}(\text{U}_m \diamond \text{KW}_f) \geq m+ n -O(\sqrt{m})$ when $m=ω(\log^2 n),n =ω(\sqrt{m})$. This is done by a direct proof of composition theorem of a universal relation and a multiplexor in the partially half-duplex model avoiding the xor composition. And the proof works even when the multiplexor only contains a few functions. One crucial ingredient in our proof involves a combinatorial problem of constructing a tree of many leaves and every leaf contains a non-overlapping set of functions. For each leaf, there is a set of inputs such that every function in the leaf takes the same value, that is all functions are restricted. We show how to choose a set of good inputs to effectively restrict these functions to force that the number of functions in each leaf is as small as possible while maintaining the total number of functions in all leaves. This results in a large number of leaves.

An Intelligent Remote Sensing Image Quality Inspection System

Due to the inevitable presence of quality problems, quality inspection of remote sensing images is indeed an indispensable step between the acquisition and the application of them. However, traditional manual inspection suffers from low efficiency. Hence, we propose a novel deep learning-based two-step intelligent system consisting of multiple advanced computer vision models, which first performs image classification by SwinV2 and then accordingly adopts the most appropriate method, such as semantic segmentation by Segformer, to localize the quality problems. Results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent performance and efficiency, surpassing traditional methods. Furthermore, we conduct an initial exploration of applying multimodal models to remote sensing image quality inspection.

Reverse time migration for inverse acoustic scattering by locally rough surfaces

Consider the inverse scattering of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by an infinite rough surface which is supposed to be a local perturbation of a plane. A novel version of reverse time migration (RTM) is proposed to reconstruct the shape and location of the rough surface. The method is based on a modified Helmholtz-Kirchhoff identity associated with a special rough surface, leading to a modified imaging functional which uses the near-field data generated by point sources as measurements. The modified imaging functional always reaches a peak on the boundary of the rough surface for sound-soft case and penetrable case, and hits a nadir on the boundary of the rough surface for sound-hard case. Furthermore, we also establish the RTM method associated with the far-field data generated by plane waves. As far as we know, this is the first result for the RTM method with the far-filed data. Numerical experiments are presented to show the powerful imaging quality.
