Triple Andreev dot chains in semiconductor nanowires

Kitaev chain is a theoretical model of a one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana zero modes at the two ends of the chain. With the goal of emulating this model, we build a chain of three quantum dots in a semiconductor nanowire. We observe Andreev bound states in each of the three dots and study their magnetic field and gate voltage dependence. Theory indicates that triple dot states acquire Majorana polarization when Andreev states in all three dots reach zero energy in a narrow range of magnetic field. In our device Andreev states in one of the dots reach zero energy at a lower field than in other two, placing the Majorana regime out of reach. Devices with greater uniformity or with independent control over superconductor-semiconductor coupling should can realize the Kitaev chain with high yield. Due to its overall tunability and design flexibility the quantum dot system remains promising for quantum simulation of interesting models and in particular for modular topological quantum devices.

Dynamic Structural Clustering on Graphs

Structural Clustering ($DynClu$) is one of the most popular graph clustering paradigms. In this paper, we consider $StrClu$ under two commonly adapted similarities, namely Jaccard similarity and cosine similarity on a dynamic graph, $G = \langle V, E\rangle$, subject to edge insertions and deletions (updates). The goal is to maintain certain information under updates, so that the $StrClu$ clustering result on~$G$ can be retrieved in $O(|V| + |E|)$ time, upon request. The state-of-the-art worst-case cost is $O(|V|)$ per update; we improve this update-time bound significantly with the $ρ$-approximate notion. Specifically, for a specified failure probability, $δ^*$, and every sequence of $M$ updates (no need to know $M$'s value in advance), our algorithm, $DynELM$, achieves $O(\log^2 |V| + \log |V| \cdot \log \frac{M}{δ^*})$ amortized cost for each update, at all times in linear space. Moreover, $DynELM$ provides a provable "sandwich" guarantee on the clustering quality at all times after \emph{each update} with probability at least $1 - δ^*$. We further develop $DynELM$ into our ultimate algorithm, $DynStrClu$, which also supports cluster-group-by queries. Given $Q\subseteq V$, this puts the non-empty intersection of $Q$ and each $StrClu$ cluster into a distinct group. $DynStrClu$ not only achieves all the guarantees of $DynELM$, but also runs cluster-group-by queries in $O(|Q|\cdot \log |V|)$ time. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithms via extensive experiments, on 15 real datasets. Experimental results confirm that our algorithms are up to three orders of magnitude more efficient than state-of-the-art competitors, and still provide quality structural clustering results. Furthermore, we study the difference between the two similarities w.r.t. the quality of approximate clustering results.

Loop-Erased Random Walk Branch of Uniform Spanning Tree in Topological Polygons

We consider uniform spanning tree (UST) in topological polygons with $2N$ marked points on the boundary with alternating boundary conditions. In [LPW21], the authors derive the scaling limit of the Peano curve in the UST. They are variants of SLE$_8$. In this article, we derive the scaling limit of the loop-erased random walk branch (LERW) in the UST. They are variants of SLE$_2$. The conclusion is a generalization of [HLW20,Theorem 1.6] where the authors derive the scaling limit of the LERW branch of UST when $N=2$. When $N=2$, the limiting law is SLE$_2(-1,-1; -1, -1)$. However, the limiting law is nolonger in the family of SLE$_2(ρ)$ process as long as $N\ge 3$.

Cooperative Learning for Noisy Supervision

Learning with noisy labels has gained the enormous interest in the robust deep learning area. Recent studies have empirically disclosed that utilizing dual networks can enhance the performance of single network but without theoretic proof. In this paper, we propose Cooperative Learning (CooL) framework for noisy supervision that analytically explains the effects of leveraging dual or multiple networks. Specifically, the simple but efficient combination in CooL yields a more reliable risk minimization for unseen clean data. A range of experiments have been conducted on several benchmarks with both synthetic and real-world settings. Extensive results indicate that CooL outperforms several state-of-the-art methods.

DanHAR: Dual Attention Network For Multimodal Human Activity Recognition Using Wearable Sensors

Human activity recognition (HAR) in ubiquitous computing has been beginning to incorporate attention into the context of deep neural networks (DNNs), in which the rich sensing data from multimodal sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope is used to infer human activities. Recently, two attention methods are proposed via combining with Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, which can capture the dependencies of sensing signals in both spatial and temporal domains simultaneously. However, recurrent networks often have a weak feature representing power compared with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). On the other hand, two attention, i.e., hard attention and soft attention, are applied in temporal domains via combining with CNN, which pay more attention to the target activity from a long sequence. However, they can only tell where to focus and miss channel information, which plays an important role in deciding what to focus. As a result, they fail to address the spatial-temporal dependencies of multimodal sensing signals, compared with attention-based GRU or LSTM. In the paper, we propose a novel dual attention method called DanHAR, which introduces the framework of blending channel attention and temporal attention on a CNN, demonstrating superiority in improving the comprehensibility for multimodal HAR. Extensive experiments on four public HAR datasets and weakly labeled dataset show that DanHAR achieves state-of-the-art performance with negligible overhead of parameters. Furthermore, visualizing analysis is provided to show that our attention can amplifies more important sensor modalities and timesteps during classification, which agrees well with human common intuition.

Learning the Best Pooling Strategy for Visual Semantic Embedding

Visual Semantic Embedding (VSE) is a dominant approach for vision-language retrieval, which aims at learning a deep embedding space such that visual data are embedded close to their semantic text labels or descriptions. Recent VSE models use complex methods to better contextualize and aggregate multi-modal features into holistic embeddings. However, we discover that surprisingly simple (but carefully selected) global pooling functions (e.g., max pooling) outperform those complex models, across different feature extractors. Despite its simplicity and effectiveness, seeking the best pooling function for different data modality and feature extractor is costly and tedious, especially when the size of features varies (e.g., text, video). Therefore, we propose a Generalized Pooling Operator (GPO), which learns to automatically adapt itself to the best pooling strategy for different features, requiring no manual tuning while staying effective and efficient. We extend the VSE model using this proposed GPO and denote it as VSE$\infty$. Without bells and whistles, VSE$\infty$ outperforms previous VSE methods significantly on image-text retrieval benchmarks across popular feature extractors. With a simple adaptation, variants of VSE$\infty$ further demonstrate its strength by achieving the new state of the art on two video-text retrieval datasets. Comprehensive experiments and visualizations confirm that GPO always discovers the best pooling strategy and can be a plug-and-play feature aggregation module for standard VSE models. Code and pre-trained models are available at https://vse-infty.github.io.

Uniqueness of weak solutions for the general Ericksen-Leslie system with Ginzburg-Landau penalization in T^2

The Ericksen-Leslie system is a fundamental hydrodynamic model that describes the evolution of incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of global weak solutions to the general Ericksen-Leslie system with a Ginzburg-Landau type approximation in a two dimensional periodic domain. The proof is based on some delicate energy estimates for the difference of two weak solutions within a suitable functional framework that is less regular than the usual one at the natural energy level, combined with the Osgood lemma involving a specific double-logarithmic type modulus of continuity. We overcome the essential mathematical difficulties arising from those highly nonlinear terms in the Leslie stress tensor and in particular, the lack of maximum principle for the director equation due to the stretching effect of the fluid on the director field. Our argument makes full use of the coupling structure as well as the dissipative nature of the system, and relies on some techniques from harmonic analysis and paradifferential calculus in the periodic setting.

A level line of the Gaussian free field with measure-valued boundary conditions

In this article, we construct samples of SLE-like curves out of samples of CLE and Poisson point process of Brownian excursions. We show that the law of these curves depends continuously on the intensity measure of the Brownian excursions. Using such construction of curves, we extend the notion of level lines of GFF to the case when the boundary condition is measure-valued.

Conjugate Energy-Based Models

In this paper, we propose conjugate energy-based models (CEBMs), a new class of energy-based models that define a joint density over data and latent variables. The joint density of a CEBM decomposes into an intractable distribution over data and a tractable posterior over latent variables. CEBMs have similar use cases as variational autoencoders, in the sense that they learn an unsupervised mapping from data to latent variables. However, these models omit a generator network, which allows them to learn more flexible notions of similarity between data points. Our experiments demonstrate that conjugate EBMs achieve competitive results in terms of image modelling, predictive power of latent space, and out-of-domain detection on a variety of datasets.

Boosting Offline Reinforcement Learning with Residual Generative Modeling

Offline reinforcement learning (RL) tries to learn the near-optimal policy with recorded offline experience without online exploration. Current offline RL research includes: 1) generative modeling, i.e., approximating a policy using fixed data; and 2) learning the state-action value function. While most research focuses on the state-action function part through reducing the bootstrapping error in value function approximation induced by the distribution shift of training data, the effects of error propagation in generative modeling have been neglected. In this paper, we analyze the error in generative modeling. We propose AQL (action-conditioned Q-learning), a residual generative model to reduce policy approximation error for offline RL. We show that our method can learn more accurate policy approximations in different benchmark datasets. In addition, we show that the proposed offline RL method can learn more competitive AI agents in complex control tasks under the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game Honor of Kings.

Nested Variational Inference

We develop nested variational inference (NVI), a family of methods that learn proposals for nested importance samplers by minimizing an forward or reverse KL divergence at each level of nesting. NVI is applicable to many commonly-used importance sampling strategies and provides a mechanism for learning intermediate densities, which can serve as heuristics to guide the sampler. Our experiments apply NVI to (a) sample from a multimodal distribution using a learned annealing path (b) learn heuristics that approximate the likelihood of future observations in a hidden Markov model and (c) to perform amortized inference in hierarchical deep generative models. We observe that optimizing nested objectives leads to improved sample quality in terms of log average weight and effective sample size.

Learning Proposals for Probabilistic Programs with Inference Combinators

We develop operators for construction of proposals in probabilistic programs, which we refer to as inference combinators. Inference combinators define a grammar over importance samplers that compose primitive operations such as application of a transition kernel and importance resampling. Proposals in these samplers can be parameterized using neural networks, which in turn can be trained by optimizing variational objectives. The result is a framework for user-programmable variational methods that are correct by construction and can be tailored to specific models. We demonstrate the flexibility of this framework by implementing advanced variational methods based on amortized Gibbs sampling and annealing.

Global Well-posedness of a Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard System with Chemotaxis and Singular Potential in 2D

We study a diffuse interface model that describes the dynamics of incompressible two-phase flows with chemotaxis effects. This model also takes into account some significant mechanisms such as active transport and nonlocal interactions of Oono's type. The system under investigation couples the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid velocity, a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation with physically relevant singular potential for the phase-field variable and an advection-diffusion-reaction equation for the nutrient density. For the initial boundary value problem in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions that are strictly separated from the pure states $\pm 1$ over time. Then we prove the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data and source term for the strong solution in energy norms. Finally, we show the propagation of regularity for weak solutions.

Observation of the out-of-plane polarized spin current from CVD grown WTe2

Weyl semimetal Td-phase WTe2 possesses the spin-resolved band structure with strong spin-orbit coupling, holding promises as a useful spin source material. The noncentrosymmetric crystalline structure of Td-WTe2 endows the generation of the out-of-plane polarized spin, which is of great interest in magnetic memory applications. Previously, WTe2 was explored in spin devices based on mechanically exfoliated single crystal flakes with a size of micrometers. For practical spintronics applications, it is highly desirable to implement wafer-scale thin films. In this work, we utilize centimeter-scale chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown Td-WTe2 thin films and study the spin current generation by the spin torque ferromagnetic resonance technique. We find the in-plane and out-of-plane spin conductivities of 7.36 x 10^3 (h/2e) (ohm-m)^-1 and 1.76 x 10^3 (h/2e) (ohm-m)^-1, respectively, in CVD-growth 5 nm-WTe2. We further demonstrate the current-induced magnetization switching in WTe2/NiFe at room temperature in the domain wall motion regime, which may invigorate potential spintronic device innovations based on Weyl semimetals.

Bench-top Cooling of a Microwave Mode using an Optically Pumped Spin Refrigerator

We experimentally demonstrate the temporary removal of thermal photons from a microwave mode at 1.45 GHz through its interaction with the spin-polarized triplet states of photo-excited pentacene molecules doped within a p-terphenyl crystal at room temperature. The crystal functions electromagnetically as a narrow-band cryogenic load, removing photons from the otherwise room-temperature mode via stimulated absorption. The noise temperature of the microwave mode dropped to $50^{+18}_{-32}$ K (as directly inferred by noise-power measurements) while the metal walls of the cavity enclosing the mode remained at room temperature. Simulations based on the same system's behavior as a maser (which could be characterized more accurately) indicate the possibility of the mode's temperature sinking to $\sim$10 K (corresponding to $\sim$140 microwave photons). These observations, when combined with engineering improvements to deepen the cooling, identify the system as a narrow-band yet extremely convenient platform -- free of cryogenics, vacuum chambers and strong magnets -- for realizing low-noise detectors, quantum memory and quantum-enhanced machines (such as heat engines) based on strong spin-photon coupling and entanglement at microwave frequencies.

Fully Convolutional Networks for Automatically Generating Image Masks to Train Mask R-CNN

This paper proposes a novel automatically generating image masks method for the state-of-the-art Mask R-CNN deep learning method. The Mask R-CNN method achieves the best results in object detection until now, however, it is very time-consuming and laborious to get the object Masks for training, the proposed method is composed by a two-stage design, to automatically generating image masks, the first stage implements a fully convolutional networks (FCN) based segmentation network, the second stage network, a Mask R-CNN based object detection network, which is trained on the object image masks from FCN output, the original input image, and additional label information. Through experimentation, our proposed method can obtain the image masks automatically to train Mask R-CNN, and it can achieve very high classification accuracy with an over 90% mean of average precision (mAP) for segmentation
