Room-temperature quasi-continuous-wave pentacene maser pumped by an invasive Ce:YAG luminescent concentrator

We present in this work a quasi-continuous-wave (CW) pentacene maser operating at 1.45 GHz in the Earth's magnetic field at room temperature with a duration of $\sim$4 ms and an output power of up to -25 dBm. The maser is optically pumped by a cerium-doped YAG (Ce:YAG) luminescent concentrator (LC) whose wedge-shaped output is embedded inside a 0.1% pentacene-doped para-terphenyl (Pc:Ptp) crystal. The pumped crystal is located inside a ring of strontium titanate (STO) that supports a TE$_{01δ}$ mode of high magnetic Purcell factor. Combined with simulations, our results indicate that CW operation of pentacene masers at room-temperature is perfectly feasible so long as excessive heating of the crystal is avoided.

A Variational Approach for Learning from Positive and Unlabeled Data

Learning binary classifiers only from positive and unlabeled (PU) data is an important and challenging task in many real-world applications, including web text classification, disease gene identification and fraud detection, where negative samples are difficult to verify experimentally. Most recent PU learning methods are developed based on the conventional misclassification risk of the supervised learning type, and they require to solve the intractable risk estimation problem by approximating the negative data distribution or the class prior. In this paper, we introduce a variational principle for PU learning that allows us to quantitatively evaluate the modeling error of the Bayesian classifier directly from given data. This leads to a loss function which can be efficiently calculated without any intermediate step or model, and a variational learning method can then be employed to optimize the classifier under general conditions. In addition, the discriminative performance and numerical stability of the variational PU learning method can be further improved by incorporating a margin maximizing loss function. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed variational method on a number of benchmark examples.

Memory Group Sampling Based Online Action Recognition Using Kinetic Skeleton Features

Online action recognition is an important task for human centered intelligent services, which is still difficult to achieve due to the varieties and uncertainties of spatial and temporal scales of human actions. In this paper, we propose two core ideas to handle the online action recognition problem. First, we combine the spatial and temporal skeleton features to depict the actions, which include not only the geometrical features, but also multi-scale motion features, such that both the spatial and temporal information of the action are covered. Second, we propose a memory group sampling method to combine the previous action frames and current action frames, which is based on the truth that the neighbouring frames are largely redundant, and the sampling mechanism ensures that the long-term contextual information is also considered. Finally, an improved 1D CNN network is employed for training and testing using the features from sampled frames. The comparison results to the state of the art methods using the public datasets show that the proposed method is fast and efficient, and has competitive performance

Stochastic Normalizing Flows

The sampling of probability distributions specified up to a normalization constant is an important problem in both machine learning and statistical mechanics. While classical stochastic sampling methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) or Langevin Dynamics (LD) can suffer from slow mixing times there is a growing interest in using normalizing flows in order to learn the transformation of a simple prior distribution to the given target distribution. Here we propose a generalized and combined approach to sample target densities: Stochastic Normalizing Flows (SNF) -- an arbitrary sequence of deterministic invertible functions and stochastic sampling blocks. We show that stochasticity overcomes expressivity limitations of normalizing flows resulting from the invertibility constraint, whereas trainable transformations between sampling steps improve efficiency of pure MCMC/LD along the flow. By invoking ideas from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics we derive an efficient training procedure by which both the sampler's and the flow's parameters can be optimized end-to-end, and by which we can compute exact importance weights without having to marginalize out the randomness of the stochastic blocks. We illustrate the representational power, sampling efficiency and asymptotic correctness of SNFs on several benchmarks including applications to sampling molecular systems in equilibrium.

On the Uniqueness of Global Multiple SLEs

This article focuses on the characterization of global multiple Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE). The chordal SLE describes the scaling limit of a single interface in various critical lattice models with Dobrushin boundary conditions, and similarly, global multiple SLEs describe scaling limits of collections of interfaces in critical lattice models with alternating boundary conditions. In this article, we give a minimal amount of characterizing properties for the global multiple SLEs: we prove that there exists a unique probability measure on collections of pairwise disjoint continuous simple curves with a certain conditional law property. As a consequence, we obtain the convergence of multiple interfaces in the critical Ising, FK-Ising, and percolation models.

A Relaxed Matching Procedure for Unsupervised BLI

Recently unsupervised Bilingual Lexicon Induction (BLI) without any parallel corpus has attracted much research interest. One of the crucial parts in methods for the BLI task is the matching procedure. Previous works impose a too strong constraint on the matching and lead to many counterintuitive translation pairings. Thus, We propose a relaxed matching procedure to find a more precise matching between two languages. We also find that aligning source and target language embedding space bidirectionally will bring significant improvement. We follow the previous iterative framework to conduct experiments. Results on standard benchmark demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, which substantially outperforms previous unsupervised methods.

Semi-Supervised Bilingual Lexicon Induction with Two-way Interaction

Semi-supervision is a promising paradigm for Bilingual Lexicon Induction (BLI) with limited annotations. However, previous semisupervised methods do not fully utilize the knowledge hidden in annotated and nonannotated data, which hinders further improvement of their performance. In this paper, we propose a new semi-supervised BLI framework to encourage the interaction between the supervised signal and unsupervised alignment. We design two message-passing mechanisms to transfer knowledge between annotated and non-annotated data, named prior optimal transport and bi-directional lexicon update respectively. Then, we perform semi-supervised learning based on a cyclic or a parallel parameter feeding routine to update our models. Our framework is a general framework that can incorporate any supervised and unsupervised BLI methods based on optimal transport. Experimental results on MUSE and VecMap datasets show significant improvement of our models. Ablation study also proves that the two-way interaction between the supervised signal and unsupervised alignment accounts for the gain of the overall performance. Results on distant language pairs further illustrate the advantage and robustness of our proposed method.

Exponential mixing property for automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds

Let $f$ be a holomorphic automorphism of a compact Kähler manifold. Assume moreover that $f$ admits a unique maximal dynamic degree $d_p$ with only one eigenvalue of maximal modulus. Let $μ$ be its equilibrium measure. In this paper, we prove that $μ$ is exponentially mixing for all d.s.h.\ test functions.

Harmonic currents directed by foliations by Riemann surfaces

We study local positive harmonic currents directed by a foliation by Riemann surfaces near a hyperbolic singularity which have no mass on the separatrices. A theorem of Nguyên says that the Lelong number of such a current at the singular point vanishes. We prove that this property is sharp: one cannot have any better mass estimate for this current near the singularity.

TORQUE: A Reading Comprehension Dataset of Temporal Ordering Questions

A critical part of reading is being able to understand the temporal relationships between events described in a passage of text, even when those relationships are not explicitly stated. However, current machine reading comprehension benchmarks have practically no questions that test temporal phenomena, so systems trained on these benchmarks have no capacity to answer questions such as "what happened before/after [some event]?" We introduce TORQUE, a new English reading comprehension benchmark built on 3.2k news snippets with 21k human-generated questions querying temporal relationships. Results show that RoBERTa-large achieves an exact-match score of 51% on the test set of TORQUE, about 30% behind human performance.

Easy, Reproducible and Quality-Controlled Data Collection with Crowdaq

High-quality and large-scale data are key to success for AI systems. However, large-scale data annotation efforts are often confronted with a set of common challenges: (1) designing a user-friendly annotation interface; (2) training enough annotators efficiently; and (3) reproducibility. To address these problems, we introduce Crowdaq, an open-source platform that standardizes the data collection pipeline with customizable user-interface components, automated annotator qualification, and saved pipelines in a re-usable format. We show that Crowdaq simplifies data annotation significantly on a diverse set of data collection use cases and we hope it will be a convenient tool for the community.

Improving the spatial resolution of a BOTDA sensor using deconvolution algorithm

Spatial resolution improvement from an acquired measurement using long pulse is developed for Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) systems based on the total variation deconvolution algorithm. The frequency dependency of Brillouin gain temporal envelope is investigated by simulation, and its impact on the recovered results of deconvolution algorithm is thoroughly analyzed. To implement a reliable deconvolution process, differential pulse-width pair (DPP) technique is utilized to effectively eliminate the systematic BFS distortion stemming from the frequency dependency of temporal envelope. The width of the pulse pairs should be larger than 40 ns as is analyzed theoretically and verified experimentally. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method can realize flexible adjustment of spatial resolution with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from an established measurement with long pump pulse. In the experiment, the spatial resolution is increased to 0.5 m and 1 m with high measurement accuracy by using the deconvolution algorithm from the measurement of 60/40 ns DPP signals. Compared with the raw DPP results with the same spatial resolution, 9.2 dB and 8.4 dB SNR improvements are obtained for 0.5 m and 1 m spatial resolution respectively, thanks to the denoising capability of the total variation deconvolution algorithm. The impact of sampling rate on the recovery results is also studied. The proposed sensing system allows for distortion-free Brillouin distributed sensing with higher spatial resolution and enhanced SNR from the conventional DPP setup with long pulse pairs.

Dipole-phonon quantum logic with alkaline-earth monoxide and monosulfide cations

Dipole-phonon quantum logic (DPQL) leverages the interaction between polar molecular ions and the motional modes of a trapped-ion Coulomb crystal to provide a potentially scalable route to quantum information science. Here, we study a class of candidate molecular ions for DPQL, the cationic alkaline-earth monoxides and monosulfides, which possess suitable structure for DPQL and can be produced in existing atomic ion experiments with little additional complexity. We present calculations of DPQL operations for one of these molecules, CaO$^+$, and discuss progress towards experimental realization. We also further develop the theory of DPQL to include state preparation and measurement and entanglement of multiple molecular ions.

Kernel Embedding based Variational Approach for Low-dimensional Approximation of Dynamical Systems

Transfer operators such as Perron-Frobenius or Koopman operator play a key role in modeling and analysis of complex dynamical systems, which allow linear representations of nonlinear dynamics by transforming the original state variables to feature spaces. However, it remains challenging to identify the optimal low-dimensional feature mappings from data. The variational approach for Markov processes (VAMP) provides a comprehensive framework for the evaluation and optimization of feature mappings based on the variational estimation of modeling errors, but it still suffers from a flawed assumption on the transfer operator and therefore sometimes fails to capture the essential structure of system dynamics. In this paper, we develop a powerful alternative to VAMP, called kernel embedding based variational approach for dynamical systems (KVAD). By using the distance measure of functions in the kernel embedding space, KVAD effectively overcomes the theoretical and practical limitations of VAMP. In addition, we develop a data-driven KVAD algorithm for seeking the ideal feature mapping within a subspace spanned by given basis functions, and numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the modeling accuracy compared to VAMP.

Amortized Population Gibbs Samplers with Neural Sufficient Statistics

We develop amortized population Gibbs (APG) samplers, a class of scalable methods that frames structured variational inference as adaptive importance sampling. APG samplers construct high-dimensional proposals by iterating over updates to lower-dimensional blocks of variables. We train each conditional proposal by minimizing the inclusive KL divergence with respect to the conditional posterior. To appropriately account for the size of the input data, we develop a new parameterization in terms of neural sufficient statistics. Experiments show that APG samplers can train highly structured deep generative models in an unsupervised manner, and achieve substantial improvements in inference accuracy relative to standard autoencoding variational methods.

Learning Based Distributed Tracking

Inspired by the great success of machine learning in the past decade, people have been thinking about the possibility of improving the theoretical results by exploring data distribution. In this paper, we revisit a fundamental problem called Distributed Tracking (DT) under an assumption that the data follows a certain (known or unknown) distribution, and propose a number data-dependent algorithms with improved theoretical bounds. Informally, in the DT problem, there is a coordinator and k players, where the coordinator holds a threshold N and each player has a counter. At each time stamp, at most one counter can be increased by one. The job of the coordinator is to capture the exact moment when the sum of all these k counters reaches N. The goal is to minimise the communication cost. While our first type of algorithms assume the concrete data distribution is known in advance, our second type of algorithms can learn the distribution on the fly. Both of the algorithms achieve a communication cost bounded byO(k log log N) with high probability, improving the state-of-the-art data-independent bound O(k log N/k). We further propose a number of implementation optimisation heuristics to improve both efficiency and robustness of the algorithms. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on three real datasets and four synthetic datasets. The experimental results show that the communication cost of our algorithms is as least as 20% of that of the state-of-the-art algorithms.

A Deep Neural Network Model of Particle Thermal Radiation in Packed Bed

Prediction of particle radiative heat transfer flux is an important task in the large discrete granular systems, such as pebble bed in power plants and industrial fluidized beds. For particle motion and packing, discrete element method (DEM) now is widely accepted as the excellent Lagrangian approach. For thermal radiation, traditional methods focus on calculating the obstructed view factor directly by numerical algorithms. The major challenge for the simulation is that the method is proven to be time-consuming and not feasible to be applied in the practical cases. In this work, we propose an analytical model to calculate macroscopic effective conductivity from particle packing structures Then, we develop a deep neural network (DNN) model used as a predictor of the complex view factor function. The DNN model is trained by a large dataset and the computational speed is greatly improved with good accuracy. It is feasible to perform real-time simulation with DNN model for radiative heat transfer in large pebble bed. The trained model also can be coupled with DEM and used to analyze efficiently the directional radiative conductivity, anisotropic factor and wall effect of the particle thermal radiation.

Real-time Human Activity Recognition Using Conditionally Parametrized Convolutions on Mobile and Wearable Devices

Recently, deep learning has represented an important research trend in human activity recognition (HAR). In particular, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance on various HAR datasets. For deep learning, improvements in performance have to heavily rely on increasing model size or capacity to scale to larger and larger datasets, which inevitably leads to the increase of operations. A high number of operations in deep leaning increases computational cost and is not suitable for real-time HAR using mobile and wearable sensors. Though shallow learning techniques often are lightweight, they could not achieve good performance. Therefore, deep learning methods that can balance the trade-off between accuracy and computation cost is highly needed, which to our knowledge has seldom been researched. In this paper, we for the first time propose a computation efficient CNN using conditionally parametrized convolution for real-time HAR on mobile and wearable devices. We evaluate the proposed method on four public benchmark HAR datasets consisting of WISDM dataset, PAMAP2 dataset, UNIMIB-SHAR dataset, and OPPORTUNITY dataset, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy without compromising computation cost. Various ablation experiments are performed to show how such a network with large capacity is clearly preferable to baseline while requiring a similar amount of operations. The method can be used as a drop-in replacement for the existing deep HAR architectures and easily deployed onto mobile and wearable devices for real-time HAR applications.
