Relay-Assisted and QoS Aware Scheduling to Overcome Blockage in mmWave Backhaul Networks

In the scenario where small cells are densely deployed, the millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network has been widely used. However, mmWave is easily blocked by obstacles, and how to forward the data of the blocked flows is still a significant challenge. To ensure backhauling capacity, the quality of service (QoS) requirements of flows should be satisfied. In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal scheduling to maximize the number of flows satisfying their QoS requirements with relays exploited to overcome blockage. To achieve a practical solution, we propose a relay-assisted and QoS aware scheduling scheme for the backhaul networks, called RAQS. It consists of a relay selection algorithm and a transmission scheduling algorithm. The relay selection algorithm selects non-repeating relays with high link rates for the blocked flows, which helps to achieve the QoS requirements of flows as soon as possible. Then, according to the results of relay selection, the transmission scheduling algorithm exploits concurrent transmissions to satisfy the QoS requirements of flows as much as possible. Extensive simulations show RAQS can effectively overcome the blockage problem, and increase the number of completed flows and network throughput compared with other schemes. In particular, the impact of relay selection parameter is also investigated to further guide the relay selection.

QoS-aware Full-duplex Concurrent Scheduling for Millimeter Wave Wireless Backhaul Networks

The development of self-interference (SI) cancelation technology makes full-duplex (FD) communication possible. Considering the quality of service (QoS) of flows in small cells densely deployed scenario with limited time slot (TS) resources, this paper introduces the FD communication into the concurrent scheduling problem of millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network. We propose a QoS-aware FD concurrent scheduling algorithm to maximize the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. Based on the contention graph, the algorithm makes full use of the FD condition. Both residual self-interference (RSI) and multi-user interference (MUI) are considered. Besides, it also fully considers the QoS requirements of flows and ensures the flows can be transmitted at high rates. Extensive simulations at 60GHz demonstrate that with high SI cancelation level and appropriate contention threshold, the proposed FD algorithm can achieve superior performance in terms of the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied and the system throughput compared with other stateof-of-the-art schemes.

Interference-aware User Grouping Strategy in NOMA Systems with QoS Constraints

To meet the performance and complexity requirements from practical deployment of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, several users are grouped together for NOMA transmission while orthogonal resources are allocated among groups. User grouping strategies have significant impact on the power consumption and system performance. However, existing related studies divide users into groups based on channel conditions, where diverse quality of service (QoS) and interference have not been considered. In this paper, we focus on the interference-aware user grouping strategy in NOMA systems, aiming at minimizing power consumption with QoS constraints. We define a power consumption and externality (PCE) function for each user to represent the power consumption involved by this user to satisfy its QoS requirement as well as interference that this user brings to others in the same group. Then, we extend the definition of PCE to multi-user scenarios and convert the user grouping problem into the problem of searching for specific negative loops in the graph. Bellman-Ford algorithm is extended to find these negative loops. Furthermore, a greedy suboptimal algorithm is proposed to approach the solution within polynomial time. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can considerably reduce the total power consumption compared with existing strategies.

Structured Disentangled Representations

Deep latent-variable models learn representations of high-dimensional data in an unsupervised manner. A number of recent efforts have focused on learning representations that disentangle statistically independent axes of variation by introducing modifications to the standard objective function. These approaches generally assume a simple diagonal Gaussian prior and as a result are not able to reliably disentangle discrete factors of variation. We propose a two-level hierarchical objective to control relative degree of statistical independence between blocks of variables and individual variables within blocks. We derive this objective as a generalization of the evidence lower bound, which allows us to explicitly represent the trade-offs between mutual information between data and representation, KL divergence between representation and prior, and coverage of the support of the empirical data distribution. Experiments on a variety of datasets demonstrate that our objective can not only disentangle discrete variables, but that doing so also improves disentanglement of other variables and, importantly, generalization even to unseen combinations of factors.

Machine learning study of the relationship between the geometric and entropy discord

As an important resource to realize quantum information, quantum correlation displays different behaviors, freezing phenomenon and non-localization, which are dissimilar to the entanglement and classical correlation, respectively. In our setup, the ordering of quantum correlation is represented for different quantization methods by considering an open quantum system scenario. The machine learning method (neural network method) is then adopted to train for the construction of a bridge between the Rènyi discord ($α=2$) and the geometric discord (Bures distance) for $X$ form states. Our results clearly demonstrate that the machine learning method is useful for studying the differences and commonalities of different quantizing methods of quantum correlation.

Composing Modeling and Inference Operations with Probabilistic Program Combinators

Probabilistic programs with dynamic computation graphs can define measures over sample spaces with unbounded dimensionality, which constitute programmatic analogues to Bayesian nonparametrics. Owing to the generality of this model class, inference relies on `black-box' Monte Carlo methods that are often not able to take advantage of conditional independence and exchangeability, which have historically been the cornerstones of efficient inference. We here seek to develop a `middle ground' between probabilistic models with fully dynamic and fully static computation graphs. To this end, we introduce a combinator library for the Probabilistic Torch framework. Combinators are functions that accept models and return transformed models. We assume that models are dynamic, but that model composition is static, in the sense that combinator application takes place prior to evaluating the model on data. Combinators provide primitives for both model and inference composition. Model combinators take the form of classic functional programming constructs such as map and reduce. These constructs define a computation graph at a coarsened level of representation, in which nodes correspond to models, rather than individual variables. Inference combinators implement operations such as importance resampling and application of a transition kernel, which alter the evaluation strategy for a model whilst preserving proper weighting. Owing to this property, models defined using combinators can be trained using stochastic methods that optimize either variational or wake-sleep style objectives. As a validation of this principle, we use combinators to implement black box inference for hidden Markov models.

Optimizing System Quality of Service through Rejuvenation for Long-Running Applications with Real-Time Constraints

Reliability, longevity, availability, and deadline guarantees are the four most important metrics to measure the QoS of long-running safety-critical real-time applications. Software aging is one of the major factors that impact the safety of long-running real-time applications as the degraded performance and increased failure rate caused by software aging can lead to deadline missing and catastrophic consequences. Software rejuvenation is one of the most commonly used approaches to handle issues caused by software aging. In this paper, we study the optimal time when software rejuvenation shall take place so that the system's reliability, longevity, and availability are maximized, and application delays caused by software rejuvenation is minimized. In particular, we formally analyze the relationships between software rejuvenation frequency and system reliability, longevity, and availability. Based on the theoretic analysis, we develop approaches to maximizing system reliability, longevity, and availability, and use simulation to evaluate the developed approaches. In addition, we design the MIN-DELAY semi-priority-driven scheduling algorithm to minimize application delays caused by rejuvenation processes. The simulation experiments show that the developed semi-priority-driven scheduling algorithm reduces application delays by 9.01% and 14.24% over the earliest deadline first (EDF) and least release time (LRT) scheduling algorithms, respectively.

A New Hybrid Consensus Protocol: Deterministic Proof Of Work

The Decentralized-Consistent-Scale (DCS) Triangle defines three dimensions that illustrate the tradeoffs of the blockchain consensus mechanism. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid consensus protocol, called Deterministic Proof of Work (DPoW), which can reach high levels of scalability and consistency without significant reduction to decentralization. Our protocol introduces a Map-reduce PoW mining algorithm to perform alongside Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) verification, which together allow for transactions to be confirmed immediately, largely improving scalability. In addition, the protocol is designed such that forking cannot occur, ensuring strong consistency and security against a multitude of attacks. The Map-reduce PoW mining process ensures that no single entity can control the network, guaranteeing decentralization. We analyzed the security of our protocol by evaluating the possibility of double spending attacks, and furthermore, conducted experiments which demonstrate our claims.

Ultrasensitive hybrid optical skin

Electronic skin, a class of wearable electronic sensors that mimic the functionalities of human skin, has made remarkable success in applications including health monitoring, human-machine interaction and electronic-biological interfaces. While electronic skin continues to achieve higher sensitivity and faster response, its ultimate performance is fundamentally limited by the nature of low-frequency AC currents in electronic circuitries. Here we demonstrate highly sensitive optical skin (O-skin) in which the primary sensory elements are optically driven. The simple construction of the sensors is achieved by embedding glass micro/nanofibers (MNFs) in thin layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Enabled by the highly sensitive power-leakage response of the guided modes from the MNF upon external stimuli, our optical sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (1870/kPa), low detection limit (7 mPa) and fast response (10 microseconds) for pressure sensing, significantly exceeding the performance metrics of state-of-the-art electronic skins. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-free detection of high-frequency vibrations, wrist pulse and human voice are realized. Moreover, a five-sensor optical data glove and a 2x2-MNF tactile sensor are demonstrated. Our results pave the way toward wearable optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive flexible sensors to optical skins.

Global Well-posedness of the Two Dimensional Beris-Edwards System with General Laudau-de Gennes Free Energy

In this paper, we consider the Beris-Edwards system for incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows. The system under investigation consists of the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$ coupled with an evolution equation for the order parameter $Q$-tensor. One important feature of the system is that its elastic free energy takes a general form and in particular, it contains a cubic term that possibly makes it unbounded from below. In the two dimensional periodic setting, we prove that if the initial $L^\infty$-norm of the $Q$-tensor is properly small, then the system admits a unique global weak solution. The proof is based on the construction of a specific approximating system that preserves the $L^\infty$-norm of the $Q$-tensor along the time evolution.

Meta-surface-enabled ultra-sharp multimode waveguide bends on silicon

Mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) is attractive as a means to increase the link capacity of a single wavelength for optical interconnects via the use of multiple mode-channels in multimode bus waveguide. In order to route the data in MDM systems, waveguide bends are typically needed. In particular, ultra-sharp bends are desirable for reducing the chip area occupied by high-density photonic intergrated circuits (PICs). In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel meta-surfaced waveguide structure on silicon, which enables ultral-sharp multimode waveguide bends to have low loss and low crosstalk among different mode-channels.An ultra-sharp S-bend with a bending radius of R=10μm is realized for an MDM optical interconnect with three mode-channels. The numerical simulation shows that the proposed ultal-sharp meta-surfaced multimode waveguide bend (MMWB) has low excess losses (0.2~0.5dB) and low inter-mode crosstalk (<-30dB) over a broad wavelength-band(>100nm) for all the three mode-channels. This is verified by experimental results, which show that the fabricated S-bends have excess losses of 0.5~0.8dB and inter-mode crosstalk of <-20 dB over a wavelength of >60 nm. The experimental results were partially limited by the measurement setup, particularly the on-chip mode (de)multiplexers which had inter-mode crosstalk of about -20dB. The proposed MMWB can be extended for the transmission of more than three mode-channels.Our work paves the way to use meta-surfaced silicon photonic waveguide structures for on-chip multimode optical interconnect.

Optimal Distributed Control of a Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy System with Mass Sources

In this paper, we study an optimal control problem for a two-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy system with mass sources that arises in the modeling of tumor growth. The aim is to monitor the tumor fraction in a finite time interval in such a way that both the tumor fraction, measured in terms of a tracking type cost functional, is kept under control and minimal harm is inflicted to the patient by administering the control, which could either be a drug or nutrition. We first prove that the optimal control problem admits a solution. Then we show that the control-to-state operator is Fréchet differentiable between suitable Banach spaces and derive the first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of the adjoint variables and the usual variational inequality.

Understanding Deep Learning Performance through an Examination of Test Set Difficulty: A Psychometric Case Study

Interpreting the performance of deep learning models beyond test set accuracy is challenging. Characteristics of individual data points are often not considered during evaluation, and each data point is treated equally. We examine the impact of a test set question's difficulty to determine if there is a relationship between difficulty and performance. We model difficulty using well-studied psychometric methods on human response patterns. Experiments on Natural Language Inference (NLI) and Sentiment Analysis (SA) show that the likelihood of answering a question correctly is impacted by the question's difficulty. As DNNs are trained with more data, easy examples are learned more quickly than hard examples.

Dynamics of holomorphic correspondences on Riemann Surfaces

We study the dynamics of holomorphic correspondences $f$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ in the case, so far not well understood, where $f$ and $f^{-1}$ have the same topological degree. Under a mild and necessary condition that we call non weak modularity, $f$ admits two canonical probability measures $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ which are invariant by $f^*$ and $f_*$ respectively. If the critical values of $f$ (resp. $f^{-1}$) are not periodic, the backward (resp. forward) orbit of any point $a \in X$ equidistributes towards $μ^+$ (resp. $μ^-$), uniformly in $a$ and exponentially fast.

CLEF: Limiting the Damage Caused by Large Flows in the Internet Core (Technical Report)

The detection of network flows that send excessive amounts of traffic is of increasing importance to enforce QoS and to counter DDoS attacks. Large-flow detection has been previously explored, but the proposed approaches can be used on high-capacity core routers only at the cost of significantly reduced accuracy, due to their otherwise too high memory and processing overhead. We propose CLEF, a new large-flow detection scheme with low memory requirements, which maintains high accuracy under the strict conditions of high-capacity core routers. We compare our scheme with previous proposals through extensive theoretical analysis, and with an evaluation based on worst-case-scenario attack traffic. We show that CLEF outperforms previously proposed systems in settings with limited memory.

Getting in shape and swimming: the role of cortical forces and membrane heterogeneity in eukaryotic cells

Recent research has shown that motile cells can adapt their mode of propulsion to the mechanical properties of the environment in which they find themselves--crawling in some environments while swimming in others. The latter can involve movement by blebbing or other cyclic shape changes, and both highlysimplified and more realistic models of these modes have been studied previously. Herein we study swimming that is driven by membrane tension gradients that arise from flows in the actin cortex underlying the membrane, and does not involve imposed cyclic shape changes. Such gradients can lead to a number of different characteristic cell shapes, and our first objective is to understand how different distributions of membrane tension influence the shape of cells in an inviscid quiescent fluid. We then analyze the effects of spatial variation in other membrane properties, and how they interact with tension gradients to determine the shape. We also study the effect of fluid--cell interactions and show how tension leads to cell movement, how the balance between tension gradients and a variable bending modulus determine the shape and direction of movement, and how the efficiency of movement depends on the properties of the fluid and the distribution of tension and bending modulus in the membrane.

HOMFLYPT Homology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Detects Unlinks

We apply the Rasmussen spectral sequence to prove that the $\mathbb{Z}^3$-graded vector space structure of the HOMFLYPT homology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ detects unlinks. Our proof relies on a theorem of Batson and Seed stating that the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-graded vector space structure of the Khovanov homology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ detects unlinks.

Ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition in spherical spin glass

We consider the spherical spin glass model defined by a combination of the pure 2-spin spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Hamiltonian and the ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss Hamiltonian. In the large system limit, there is a two-dimensional phase diagram with respect to the temperature and the coupling strength. The phase diagram is divided into three regimes; ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and spin glass regimes. The fluctuations of the free energy are known in each regime. In this paper, we study the transition between the ferromagnetic regime and the paramagnetic regime in a critical scale.
