Spatiotemporal dynamics on small-world neuronal networks: The roles of two types of time-delayed coupling

We investigate temporal coherence and spatial synchronization on small-world networks consisting of noisy Terman-Wang (TW) excitable neurons in dependence on two types of time-delayed coupling: $\{x_j(t-τ)-x_i (t)\}$ and $\{x_j(t-τ)-x_i(t-τ)\}$. For the former case, we show that time delay in the coupling can dramatically enhance temporal coherence and spatial synchrony of the noise-induced spike trains. In addition, if the delay time $τ$ is tuned to nearly match the intrinsic spike period of the neuronal network, the system dynamics reaches a most ordered state, which is both periodic in time and nearly synchronized in space, demonstrating an interesting resonance phenomenon with delay. For the latter case, however, we can not achieve a similar spatiotemporal ordered state, but the neuronal dynamics exhibits interesting synchronization transition with time delay from zigzag fronts of excitations to dynamic clustering anti-phase synchronization (APS), and further to clustered chimera states which have spatially distributed anti-phase coherence separated by incoherence. Furthermore, we also show how these findings are influenced by the change of the noise intensity and the rewiring probability. Finally, qualitative analysis is given to illustrate the numerical results.

Equivariant colored sl(N)-homology for links

We construct an equivariant colored sl(N)-homology for links, which generalizes both the colored sl(N)-homology defined by the author and the equivariant sl(N)-homology defined by Krasner. The construction is a straightforward generalization of that of the colored sl(N)-homology. The proof of invariance is based on a simple observation which allows us to translate the proof of the invariance of the colored sl(N)-homology into the new setting. As an application, we prove that deformations over C of the colored sl(N)-homology are link invariants. We also construct a spectral sequence connecting the colored sl(N)-homology to its deformations over C, which generalizes the spectral sequence given by Lee and Gornik.

Colored Morton-Franks-Williams inequalities

We generalize the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality to the colored $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ link homology defined in arXiv:0907.0695, which gives infinitely many new bounds for the braid index and the self linking number. A key ingredient of our proof is a composition product for the general MOY graph polynomial, which generalizes that of Wagner arXiv:math/0702230v1.

Finite dimensional global and exponential attractors for a coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for atomic Fermi gases near the BCS-BEC crossover

We study a coupled nonlinear evolution system arising from the Ginzburg-Landau theory for atomic Fermi gases near the BCS-BEC crossover. First, we prove that the initial boundary value problem generates a strongly continuous semigroup on a suitable phase-space which possesses the global attractor. Then we establish the existence of an exponential attractor. As a consequence, we show that the global attractor is of finite fractal dimension.

Finite dimensional reduction and convergence to equilibrium for incompressible Smectic-A liquid crystal flows

We consider a hydrodynamic system that models the Smectic-A liquid crystal flow. The model consists of the Navier-Stokes equation for the fluid velocity coupled with a fourth-order equation for the layer variable $\vp$, endowed with periodic boundary conditions. We analyze the long-time behavior of the solutions within the theory of infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems. We first prove that in 2D, the problem possesses a global attractor $\mathcal{A}$ in certain phase space. Then we establish the existence of an exponential attractor $\mathcal{M}$ which entails that the global attractor $\mathcal{A}$ has finite fractal dimension. Moreover, we show that each trajectory converges to a single equilibrium by means of a suitable Lojasiewicz--Simon inequality. Corresponding results in 3D are also discussed.

Asymptotic Behavior for a Nematic Liquid Crystal Model with Different Kinematic Transport Properties

We study the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to hydrodynamical systems modeling the nematic liquid crystal flows under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. The coupling system consists of Navier-Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the molecular orientations. We prove the convergence of global strong solutions to single steady states as time tends to infinity as well as estimates on the convergence rate both in 2D for arbitrary regular initial data and in 3D for certain particular cases.

Global existence for the generalized two-component Hunter-Saxton system

We study the global existence of solutions to a two-component generalized Hunter-Saxton system in the periodic setting. We first prove a persistence result of the solutions. Then for some particular choices of parameters $(α, κ)$, we show the precise blow-up scenarios and the existence of global solutions to the generalized Hunter-Saxton system under proper assumptions on the initial data. This significantly improves recent results obtained in [M. Wunsch, DCDS Ser. B 12 (2009), 647-656] and [M. Wunsch, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 42 (2010), 1286-1304].

Deconfining phase transition on a double-layered torus

Deconfined regions in relativistic heavy ion collisions are limited to small volumes surrounded by a confined exterior. Here the geometry of a double layered torus is discussed, which allows for different temperatures in its two layers. This geometry enables one to approach the QCD continuum limit for small deconfined volumes with confined exteriors in a more realistic fashion than by using periodic boundary conditions. Preliminary data from a study for pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory support a substantial increase in a pseudo transition temperature.

Matrix factorizations and colored MOY graphs

The contents of this 98-page paper have been subsumed into the 191-page paper "A colored sl(N)-homology for links in S^3" (arXiv:0907.0695v1 [math.GT]), in which we further develop the theory and use it to construct a colored link homology.

Long-time Behavior for Nonlinear Hydrodynamic System Modeling the Nematic Liquid Crystal Flows

We study a simplified system of the original Ericksen--Leslie equations for the flow of nematic liquid crystals. This is a coupled non-parabolic dissipative dynamic system. We show the convergence of global classical solutions to single steady states as time goes to infinity (uniqueness of asymptotic limit) by using the Łojasiewicz--Simon approach. Moreover, we provide an estimate on the convergence rate. Finally, we discuss some possible extensions of the results to certain generalized problems with changing density or free-slip boundary condition.

Theoretical and numerical investigations on shapes of planar lipid monolayer domains

Shapes of planar lipid monolayer domains at the air-water interface are theoretically and numerically investigated by minimizing the formation energy of the domains which consist of the surface energy, line tension energy, and dipole electrostatic energy. The shape equation which describes boundary curves of the domains at equilibrium state is derived from the first order variation of the formation energy. A relaxation method is proposed to find the numerical solutions of the shape equation. The theoretical and numerical results are in good agreement with previous experimental observation. Some new shapes not observed in previous experiments are also obtained, which awaits experimental confirmation in the future.

Long-time Behavior for a Nonlinear Plate Equation with Thermal Memory

We consider a nonlinear plate equation with thermal memory effects due to non-Fourier heat flux laws. First we prove the existence and uniqueness of global solutions as well as the existence of a global attractor. Then we use a suitable Lojasiewicz--Simon type inequality to show the convergence of global solutions to single steady states as time goes to infinity under the assumption that the nonlinear term $f$ is real analytic. Moreover, we provide an estimate on the convergence rate.

Convergence to Equilibrium for the Cahn-Hilliard Equation with Wentzell Boundary Condition

In this paper we consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation endowed with Wentzell boundary condition which is a model of phase separation in a binary mixture contained in a bounded domain with permeable wall. Under the assumption that the nonlinearity is analytic with respect to unknown dependent function, we prove the convergence of a global solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity by means of a suitable Łojasiewicz-Simon type inequality with boundary term. Estimates of convergence rate are also provided.

The Khovanov-Rozansky Cohomology and Bennequin Inequalities

We review Bennequin type inequalities established using various versions of the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology. Then we give a new proof of a Bennequin type inequality established by the author, and derive new Bennequin type inequalities for knots using Gornik's version of the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology, which generalize those established by Shumakovitch, Plamenevskaya and Kawamura using the Rasmussen invariant.

On the quantum filtration of the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology

We prove the quantum filtration on the Khovanov-Rozansky link cohomology H_p with a general degree (n+1) monic potential polynomial p(x) is invariant under Reidemeister moves, and construct a spectral sequence converging to H_p that is invariant under Reidemeister moves, whose E_1 term is isomorphic to the Khovanov-Rozansky sl(n)-cohomology H_n. Then we define a generalization of the Rasmussen invariant, and study some of its properties. We also discuss relations between upper bounds of the self-linking number of transversal links in the standard contact three sphere.
