Multi-fidelity methods for kinetic models of epidemic dynamics with uncertain contact structure

In this work, we develop a multi-fidelity strategy for kinetic models in epidemiology with uncertain contact dynamics. Assessing and controlling the population-level effects of contact dynamics requires the development of models for understanding observable effects of heterogeneous contact structures, whose formation depends on complex social phenomena. These can be captured taking into account high-dimensional uncertain quantities. The proposed approach combines high-fidelity kinetic solvers with a hierarchy of low-fidelity surrogates, including reduced macroscopic models and coarse kinetic descriptions, remaining applicable even in regimes where a macroscopic closure is unavailable. This hierarchical framework identifies representative parameter samples and reconstructs full solutions via projection-based techniques, enabling efficient uncertainty propagation while drastically reducing computational cost. Numerical experiments in high-dimensional stochastic settings demonstrate that accurate statistical estimates of epidemic observables can be obtained with significantly reduced computational costs compared to standard approaches.

μ-MOPA Architecture for Photonic Integrated Solid State Laser

Diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers play a central role in modern photonics owing to their exceptional efficiency and ability to extend spectral coverage beyond the reach of semiconductor diodes. These attributes have enabled breakthroughs in precision metrology, quantum optics, and coherent communications. However, bringing the proven advantages of DPSS gain media such as Nd:YAG onto an integrated photonic platform has remained difficult, largely due to inefficient pump utilization and limited power-scaling in chip-scale implementations. Here, we demonstrate the first photonic-integrated Nd:YAG laser-amplifier system that overcomes these challenges with a micro-chip based master-oscillator-power-amplifier (μ-MOPA) architecture. The seed laser, employing a double-resonant microring resonator, could reach a threshold as low as 2.9 μW. The single-pass waveguide amplifier, when optimized separately, provides up to 46.6 dB small-signal gain. Combining the low-threshold seed with cascaded waveguide amplifiers, the integrated μ-MOPA delivers more than 12 dBm of amplified continuous-wave output power. These results establish Nd:YAG waveguide integration as a practical route to compact and high-performance solid-state light sources.

Probing phase transitions of regular black holes in anti-de Sitter space with Lyapunov exponent

We investigate the relationship between thermodynamic phase transitions and the Lyapunov exponent of charged regular anti-de Sitter black holes in quasi-topological gravity. Our results show that the Lyapunov exponent displays oscillatory behavior during phase transitions. Moreover, along the coexistence curve the Lyapunov exponent changes discontinously and continuously at the critical point. Near the critical point, the Lyapunov exponent follows a power-law behavior with a critical exponent of 1/2, suggesting its role as an order parameter and encodes information on black hole phase transitions.

Crystal structure prediction with nuclear quantum and finite-temperature effects via deep free energy learning

Accurate crystal structure prediction (CSP) requires accounting for finite-temperature and nuclear quantum effects, yet first-principles evaluation of the free energy surface (FES) remains prohibitive for high-throughput searches. We observe that the self-consistent harmonic approximation (SCHA) FES, as a function of nuclear centroid positions, shares the same mathematical structure as a potential-energy surface and can therefore be directly learned by a deep neural network potential. The resulting deep free energy (DF) model, constructed via a two-level concurrent-learning workflow, evaluates free energies, forces, and stresses in a single forward pass. Applied to the La-Sc-H system at 200 GPa and 300 K, DF-based CSP reproduces the stability of the experimentally observed LaH10 and LaSc2H24, and discovers an unreported thermodynamically stable clathrate hydride: P4/mmm LaScH8. Benchmarked on the LaH10 system, the DF model achieves a 1.72*10^6-fold cost reduction relative to DFT-level SSCHA. The DF framework provides a scalable route for incorporating finite-temperature and nuclear quantum effects into high-throughput crystal structure prediction.

Interface Engineered Moiré Graphene Superlattices: Breaking the Auger Carrier Multiplication Limit for Infrared Single-Photon Detection

Hot electrons undergo Auger scattering during their relaxation process has a multiplication effect, which can generate more electrons above the Fermi level, thus improving the efficiency of photoelectric signal conversion. However, the photo-current gain brought by the Auger carrier multiplication is generally limited with a value less than 5,due to the rapid recombination of photo-generated charge-carriers and the inherently low light absorption of two-dimensional materials.Herein,by twisting graphene to an interlayer angle of 10 o ,we report a layer-dependent electronic correlations leading to an efficient carrier multiplication gain of 10 3 .This is primarily offered by the additional localized density-of-states at interface of the bi-layer 10 o ,moire graphene, and the enhanced interlayer coupling of electron waves in a five-layer moire graphene superlattice structure. Therefore,we can harvest the hot electrons during their energy relaxation through a thermalized optical phonon bottleneck effect. It is this effect that promotes the accumulated hot electrons to achieve a maximum Auger scattering rate ~ 10 10 *ps -1 *cm -2 .Furthermore, the ballistic transport of these hot electrons and Schottky barrier from a 90 nm thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) silicon effectively block the thermal noise, thus leading to a highly sensitive near-infrared detection characteristic. At a low incident light power of ~ 10 -13 W/cm 2 ,the resulting signal-to-noise ratio is more than 100 dB.The strengthened electromagnetic interaction from highly thermalized optical phonon in stacked moire graphene is utilized in this work. The hot electron multiplication suggests the applicability of Van der Waals moire superlattice architecture for harvesting charge carriers, thus paving the pathway to design infrared single-photon avalanche detectors.

Movable-Antenna Empowered Backscatter ISAC: Toward Geometry-Adaptive, Low-Power Networks

Backscatter-based integrated sensing and communication (B-ISAC) elevates passive tags into information-bearing scatterers, offering an ultra-low-power path toward dual-function wireless systems. However, this promise is fundamentally undermined by a cascaded backscattering link that suffers from severe double fading and is exquisitely sensitive to geometric misalignment. This article tackles this geometric bottleneck by integrating movable antenna systems (MAS) at the transceiver side. MAS provides real-time, controllable spatial degrees of freedom through sub-wavelength antenna repositioning, enabling active reconfiguration of the cascaded channel without modifying passive tags or consuming additional spectrum. We position this solution within a unified ISAC-backscatter communication-B-ISAC evolution, describe the resulting MAS-assisted B-ISAC architecture and operating principles, and demonstrate its system-level gains through comparative analysis and numerical results. Finally, we showcase the potential of this geometry-adaptive paradigm across key IoT application scenarios, pointing toward future motion-aware wireless networks.

Deep Variational Free Energy Calculation of Hydrogen Hugoniot

We develop a deep variational free energy framework to compute the equation of state of hydrogen in the warm dense matter region. This method parameterizes the variational density matrix of hydrogen nuclei and electrons at finite temperature using three deep generative models: a normalizing flow model for the Boltzmann distribution of the classical nuclei, an autoregressive transformer for the distribution of electrons in excited states, and a permutational equivariant flow model for the unitary backflow transformation of electron coordinates in Hartree-Fock states. By jointly optimizing the three neural networks to minimize the variational free energy, we obtain the equation of state and related thermodynamic properties of dense hydrogen for the temperature range where electrons occupy excited states. We compare our results with other theoretical and experimental results on the deuterium Hugoniot curve, aiming to resolve existing discrepancies. Our results bridge the gap between the results obtained by path-integral Monte Carlo calculations at high temperature and ground-state electronic methods at low temperature, thus providing a valuable benchmark for hydrogen in the warm dense matter region.

Revisiting Wireless-Powered MEC: A Cooperative Energy Recycling Framework for Task-Energy Co-Design

Cooperative energy recycling (CER) offers a new way to boost energy utilization in wireless-powered multi-access edge computing (MEC) networks, yet its integration with computation-communication co-design remains underexplored. This paper proposes a CER-enabled MEC framework that maximizes the minimum computable data among users under energy causality, latency, and power constraints. The intractable problem is reformulated into a convex form through relaxation, maximum ratio combining, and variable substitution, and closed-form solutions are derived via Lagrangian duality and alternating optimization, offering analytical insights. Simulation results verify that the proposed CER mechanism markedly increases total computable data while maintaining equitable performance across heterogeneous users.

SA$^{2}$Net: Scale-Adaptive Structure-Affinity Transformation for Spine Segmentation from Ultrasound Volume Projection Imaging

Spine segmentation, based on ultrasound volume projection imaging (VPI), plays a vital role for intelligent scoliosis diagnosis in clinical applications. However, this task faces several significant challenges. Firstly, the global contextual knowledge of spines may not be well-learned if we neglect the high spatial correlation of different bone features. Secondly, the spine bones contain rich structural knowledge regarding their shapes and positions, which deserves to be encoded into the segmentation process. To address these challenges, we propose a novel scale-adaptive structure-aware network (SA$^{2}$Net) for effective spine segmentation. First, we propose a scale-adaptive complementary strategy to learn the cross-dimensional long-distance correlation features for spinal images. Second, motivated by the consistency between multi-head self-attention in Transformers and semantic level affinity, we propose structure-affinity transformation to transform semantic features with class-specific affinity and combine it with a Transformer decoder for structure-aware reasoning. In addition, we adopt a feature mixing loss aggregation method to enhance model training. This method improves the robustness and accuracy of the segmentation process. The experimental results demonstrate that our SA$^{2}$Net achieves superior segmentation performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the adaptability of SA$^{2}$Net to various backbones enhances its potential as a promising tool for advanced scoliosis diagnosis using intelligent spinal image analysis. Enhancing Novel View Synthesis from extremely sparse views with SfM-free 3D Gaussian Splatting Framework

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has demonstrated remarkable real-time performance in novel view synthesis, yet its effectiveness relies heavily on dense multi-view inputs with precisely known camera poses, which are rarely available in real-world scenarios. When input views become extremely sparse, the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) method that 3DGS depends on for initialization fails to accurately reconstruct the 3D geometric structures of scenes, resulting in degraded rendering quality. In this paper, we propose a novel SfM-free 3DGS-based method that jointly estimates camera poses and reconstructs 3D scenes from extremely sparse-view inputs. Specifically, instead of SfM, we propose a dense stereo module to progressively estimates camera pose information and reconstructs a global dense point cloud for initialization. To address the inherent problem of information scarcity in extremely sparse-view settings, we propose a coherent view interpolation module that interpolates camera poses based on training view pairs and generates viewpoint-consistent content as additional supervision signals for training. Furthermore, we introduce multi-scale Laplacian consistent regularization and adaptive spatial-aware multi-scale geometry regularization to enhance the quality of geometrical structures and rendered content. Experiments show that our method significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art 3DGS-based approaches, achieving a remarkable 2.75dB improvement in PSNR under extremely sparse-view conditions (using only 2 training views). The images synthesized by our method exhibit minimal distortion while preserving rich high-frequency details, resulting in superior visual quality compared to existing techniques.

Accurate and thermodynamically consistent hydrogen equation of state for planetary modeling with flow matching

Accurate determination of the equation of state of dense hydrogen is essential for understanding gas giants. Currently, there is still no consensus on methods for calculating its entropy, which play a fundamental role and can result in qualitatively different predictions for Jupiter's interior. Here, we investigate various aspects of entropy calculation for dense hydrogen based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we employ the recently developed flow matching method to validate the accuracy of the traditional thermodynamic integration approach. We then clearly identify pitfalls in previous attempts and propose a reliable framework for constructing the hydrogen equation of state, which is accurate and thermodynamically consistent across a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions. This allows us to conclusively address the long-standing discrepancies in Jupiter's adiabat among earlier studies, demonstrating the potential of our approach for providing reliable equations of state of diverse materials.

A Denser Hydrogen Inferred from First-Principles Simulations Challenges Jupiter's Interior Models

First-principle modeling of dense hydrogen is crucial in materials and planetary sciences. Despite its apparent simplicity, predicting the ionic and electronic structure of hydrogen is a formidable challenge, and it is connected with the insulator-to-metal transition, a century-old problem in condensed matter. Accurate simulations of liquid hydrogen are also essential for modeling gas giant planets. Here we perform an exhaustive study of the equation of state of hydrogen using Density Functional Theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the pressure predicted by Density Functional Theory may vary qualitatively when using different functionals. The predictive power of first-principle simulations is restored by validating each functional against higher-level wavefunction theories, represented by computationally intensive variational and diffusion Monte Carlo calculations. Our simulations provide evidence that hydrogen is denser at planetary conditions, compared to currently used equations of state. For Jupiter, this implies a lower bulk metallicity (i.e., a smaller mass of heavy elements). Our results further amplify the inconsistency between Jupiter's atmospheric metallicity measured by the Galileo probe and the envelope metallicity inferred from interior models.

Deep variational free energy prediction of dense hydrogen solid at 1200K

We perform deep variational free energy calculations to investigate the dense hydrogen system at 1200 K and high pressures. In this computational framework, neural networks are used to model the free energy through the proton Boltzmann distribution and the electron wavefunction. By directly minimizing the free energy, our results reveal the emergence of a crystalline order associated with the center of mass of hydrogen molecules at approximately 180 GPa. This transition from atomic liquid to a molecular solid is marked by discontinuities in both the pressure and thermal entropy. Additionally, we discuss the broader implications and limitations of these findings in the context of recent studies of dense hydrogen under similar conditions.

Exploiting Hybrid Active and Passive Multiple Access via Slotted ALOHA-Driven Backscatter Communications

In conventional backscatter communication (BackCom) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) and frequency division multiple access (FDMA) are generally adopted for multiuser backscattering due to their simplicity in implementation. However, as the number of backscatter devices (BDs) proliferates, there will be a high overhead under the traditional centralized control techniques, and the inter-user coordination is unaffordable for the passive BDs, which are of scarce concern in existing works and remain unsolved. To this end, in this paper, we propose a slotted ALOHA-based random access for BackCom systems, in which each BD is randomly chosen and is allowed to coexist with one active device for hybrid multiple access. To excavate and evaluate the performance, a resource allocation problem for max-min transmission rate is formulated, where transmit antenna selection, receive beamforming design, reflection coefficient adjustment, power control, and access probability determination are jointly considered. To deal with this intractable problem, we first transform the objective function with the max-min form into an equivalent linear one, and then decompose the resulting problem into three sub-problems. Next, a block coordinate descent (BCD)-based greedy algorithm with a penalty function, successive convex approximation, and linear programming are designed to obtain sub-optimal solutions for tractable analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of transmission rate and fairness.

Frequency-Aware Guidance for Blind Image Restoration via Diffusion Models

Blind image restoration remains a significant challenge in low-level vision tasks. Recently, denoising diffusion models have shown remarkable performance in image synthesis. Guided diffusion models, leveraging the potent generative priors of pre-trained models along with a differential guidance loss, have achieved promising results in blind image restoration. However, these models typically consider data consistency solely in the spatial domain, often resulting in distorted image content. In this paper, we propose a novel frequency-aware guidance loss that can be integrated into various diffusion models in a plug-and-play manner. Our proposed guidance loss, based on 2D discrete wavelet transform, simultaneously enforces content consistency in both the spatial and frequency domains. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in three blind restoration tasks: blind image deblurring, imaging through turbulence, and blind restoration for multiple degradations. Notably, our method achieves a significant improvement in PSNR score, with a remarkable enhancement of 3.72\,dB in image deblurring. Moreover, our method exhibits superior capability in generating images with rich details and reduced distortion, leading to the best visual quality.

Towards Multi-View Consistent Style Transfer with One-Step Diffusion via Vision Conditioning

The stylization of 3D scenes is an increasingly attractive topic in 3D vision. Although image style transfer has been extensively researched with promising results, directly applying 2D style transfer methods to 3D scenes often fails to preserve the structural and multi-view properties of 3D environments, resulting in unpleasant distortions in images from different viewpoints. To address these issues, we leverage the remarkable generative prior of diffusion-based models and propose a novel style transfer method, OSDiffST, based on a pre-trained one-step diffusion model (i.e., SD-Turbo) for rendering diverse styles in multi-view images of 3D scenes. To efficiently adapt the pre-trained model for multi-view style transfer on small datasets, we introduce a vision condition module to extract style information from the reference style image to serve as conditional input for the diffusion model and employ LoRA in diffusion model for adaptation. Additionally, we consider color distribution alignment and structural similarity between the stylized and content images using two specific loss functions. As a result, our method effectively preserves the structural information and multi-view consistency in stylized images without any 3D information. Experiments show that our method surpasses other promising style transfer methods in synthesizing various styles for multi-view images of 3D scenes. Stylized images from different viewpoints generated by our method achieve superior visual quality, with better structural integrity and less distortion. Unveiling the Pockels Coefficient of Ferroelectric Nitride ScAlN

Nitride ferroelectrics have recently emerged as promising alternatives to oxide ferroelectrics due to their compatibility with mainstream semiconductor processing. ScAlN, in particular, has exhibited remarkable piezoelectric coupling strength ($K^2$) comparable to that of lithium niobate (LN), making it a valuable choice for RF filters in wireless communications. Recently, ScAlN has sparked interest in its use for nanophotonic devices, chiefly due to its large bandgap facilitating operation in blue wavelengths coupled with promises of enhanced nonlinear optical properties such as a large second-order susceptibility ($χ^{(2)}$). It is still an open question whether ScAlN can outperform oxide ferroelectrics concerning the Pockels effect -- an electro-optic coupling extensively utilized in optical communications devices. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of ScAlN's Pockels effect. Our findings reveal that the electro-optic coupling of ScAlN, despite being weak at low Sc concentration, may be significantly enhanced and exceed LiNbO$_3$ at high levels of Sc doping, which points the direction of continued research efforts to unlock the full potential of ScAlN.

Signal of phase transition hidden in quasinormal modes of regular AdS black holes

We discuss the intrinsic relations between thermodynamic phase transitions and quasinormal modes in regular AdS black holes, specifically in the Bardeen and Hayward AdS classes. To this end, we calculate the quasinormal modes of massless scalar field perturbations around small and large black holes via the Horowitz-Hubeny method. By investigating the isobaric and isothermal phase transitions for Bardeen and Hayward AdS black holes in detail, we observe that a dramatic change of quasinormal modes appears near the phase transition point of small and large black holes, and that it corresponds to the swallow tail structure in the plane of Gibbs free energy with respect to pressure. Moreover, by analyzing the evolution of black holes along the coexistence curve of small and large black hole phases, we also observe the dramatic change in quasinormal modes. Such a phenomenon confirms the signal of the phase transition in the quasinormal mode spectrum, which can be understood as a thermodynamic signal hidden in the dynamical spectrum.
