Meta-multigraph Search: Rethinking Meta-structure on Heterogeneous Information Networks

Meta-structures are widely used to define which subset of neighbors to aggregate information in heterogeneous information networks (HINs). In this work, we investigate existing meta-structures, including meta-path and meta-graph, and observe that they are initially designed manually with fixed patterns and hence are insufficient to encode various rich semantic information on diverse HINs. Through reflection on their limitation, we define a new concept called meta-multigraph as a more expressive and flexible generalization of meta-graph, and propose a stable differentiable search method to automatically optimize the meta-multigraph for specific HINs and tasks. As the flexibility of meta-multigraphs may propagate redundant messages, we further introduce a complex-to-concise (C2C) meta-multigraph that propagates messages from complex to concise along the depth of meta-multigraph. Moreover, we observe that the differentiable search typically suffers from unstable search and a significant gap between the meta-structures in search and evaluation. To this end, we propose a progressive search algorithm by implicitly narrowing the search space to improve search stability and reduce inconsistency. Extensive experiments are conducted on six medium-scale benchmark datasets and one large-scale benchmark dataset over two representative tasks, i.e., node classification and recommendation. Empirical results demonstrate that our search methods can automatically find expressive meta-multigraphs and C2C meta-multigraphs, enabling our model to outperform state-of-the-art heterogeneous graph neural networks.

Local Modules in Braided Monoidal 2-Categories

Given an algebra in a monoidal 2-category, one can construct a 2-category of right modules. Given a braided algebra in a braided monoidal 2-category, it is possible to refine the notion of right module to that of a local module. Under mild assumptions, we prove that the 2-category of local modules admits a braided monoidal structure. In addition, if the braided monoidal 2-category has duals, we go on to show that the 2-category of local modules also has duals. Furthermore, if it is a braided fusion 2-category, we establish that the 2-category of local modules is a braided multifusion 2-category. We examine various examples. For instance, working within the 2-category of 2-vector spaces, we find that the notion of local module recovers that of braided module 1-category. Finally, we examine the concept of a Lagrangian algebra, that is a braided algebra with trivial 2-category of local modules. In particular, we completely describe Lagrangian algebras in the Drinfeld centers of fusion 2-categories, and we discuss how this result is related to the classifications of topological boundaries of (3+1)d topological phases of matter.

Worth of knowledge in deep learning

Knowledge constitutes the accumulated understanding and experience that humans use to gain insight into the world. In deep learning, prior knowledge is essential for mitigating shortcomings of data-driven models, such as data dependence, generalization ability, and compliance with constraints. To enable efficient evaluation of the worth of knowledge, we present a framework inspired by interpretable machine learning. Through quantitative experiments, we assess the influence of data volume and estimation range on the worth of knowledge. Our findings elucidate the complex relationship between data and knowledge, including dependence, synergistic, and substitution effects. Our model-agnostic framework can be applied to a variety of common network architectures, providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of prior knowledge in deep learning models. It can also be used to improve the performance of informed machine learning, as well as distinguish improper prior knowledge.

Automatic Counterfactual Augmentation for Robust Text Classification Based on Word-Group Search

Despite large-scale pre-trained language models have achieved striking results for text classificaion, recent work has raised concerns about the challenge of shortcut learning. In general, a keyword is regarded as a shortcut if it creates a superficial association with the label, resulting in a false prediction. Conversely, shortcut learning can be mitigated if the model relies on robust causal features that help produce sound predictions. To this end, many studies have explored post-hoc interpretable methods to mine shortcuts and causal features for robustness and generalization. However, most existing methods focus only on single word in a sentence and lack consideration of word-group, leading to wrong causal features. To solve this problem, we propose a new Word-Group mining approach, which captures the causal effect of any keyword combination and orders the combinations that most affect the prediction. Our approach bases on effective post-hoc analysis and beam search, which ensures the mining effect and reduces the complexity. Then, we build a counterfactual augmentation method based on the multiple word-groups, and use an adaptive voting mechanism to learn the influence of different augmentated samples on the prediction results, so as to force the model to pay attention to effective causal features. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by several tasks on 8 affective review datasets and 4 toxic language datasets, including cross-domain text classificaion, text attack and gender fairness test.

MAC Wiretap Channels with Confidential and Open Messages: Improved Achievable Region and Low-complexity Precoder Design

This paper investigates the achievable region and precoder design for multiple access wiretap (MAC-WT) channels, where each user transmits both secret and open (i.e., non-confidential) messages. All these messages are intended for the legitimate receiver (or Bob for brevity) and the eavesdropper (Eve) is interested only in the secret messages of all users. By allowing users with zero secret message rate to act as conventional MAC channel users with no wiretapping, we show that the achievable region of the discrete memoryless (DM) MAC-WT channel given in [1] can be enlarged. In [1], the achievability was proven by considering the two-user case, making it possible to prove a key auxiliary lemma by directly using the Fourier-Motzkin elimination procedure. However, this approach does not generalize to the case with any number of users. In this paper, we provide a new region that generally enlarges that in [1] and provide general achievability proof.

deController: A Web3 Native Cyberspace Infrastructure Perspective

Web3 brings an emerging outlook for the value of decentralization, boosting the decentralized infrastructure. People can benefit from Web3, facilitated by the advances in distributed ledger technology, to read, write and own web content, services and applications more freely without revealing their real identities. Although the features and merits of Web3 have been widely discussed, the network architecture of Web3 and how to achieve complete decentralization considering law compliance in Web3 are still unclear. Here, we propose a perspective of Web3 architecture, deController, consisting of underlay and overlay network as Web3 infrastructures to underpin services and applications. The functions of underlay and overlay and their interactions are illustrated. Meanwhile, the security and privacy of Web3 are analyzed based on a novel design of three-tier identities cooperating with deController. Furthermore, the impacts of laws on privacy and cyber sovereignty to achieve Web3 are discussed.

The ART of Conversation: Measuring Phonetic Convergence and Deliberate Imitation in L2-Speech with a Siamese RNN

Phonetic convergence describes the automatic and unconscious speech adaptation of two interlocutors in a conversation. This paper proposes a Siamese recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture to measure the convergence of the holistic spectral characteristics of speech sounds in an L2-L2 interaction. We extend an alternating reading task (the ART) dataset by adding 20 native Slovak L2 English speakers. We train and test the Siamese RNN model to measure phonetic convergence of L2 English speech from three different native language groups: Italian (9 dyads), French (10 dyads) and Slovak (10 dyads). Our results indicate that the Siamese RNN model effectively captures the dynamics of phonetic convergence and the speaker's imitation ability. Moreover, this text-independent model is scalable and capable of handling L1-induced speaker variability.

Real-time Manipulation of Liquid Droplets using Photo-responsive Surfactant

Fast and programmable transport of liquid droplets on a solid substrate is desirable in microfluidic, thermal, biomedical, and energy devices. Past research has focused on designing substrates with asymmetric structures or gradient wettability where droplet behaviors are passively controlled, or by applying external electric, thermal, magnetic, or acoustic stimuli that either require the fabrication of electrodes or a strong applied field. In this work, we demonstrate tunable and programmable droplet motion on liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) and inside solid-surface capillary channels using low-intensity light and photo-responsive surfactants. When illuminated by the light of appropriate wavelengths, the surfactants can reversibly change their molecular conformation thereby tuning interfacial tensions in a multi-phase fluid system. This generates a Marangoni flow that drives droplet motions. With two novel surfactants that we synthesized, we demonstrate fast linear and complex 2D movements of droplets on liquid surfaces, on LIS, and inside microchannels. We also visualized the internal flow pattern using tracer particles and developed simple scaling arguments to explain droplet-size-dependent velocity. The method demonstrated in this study serves as a simple and exciting new approach for the dynamic manipulation of droplets for microfluidic, thermal, and water harvesting devices.

Fluid Antenna System: New Insights on Outage Probability and Diversity Gain

To enable innovative applications and services, both industry and academia are exploring new technologies for sixth generation (6G) communications. One of the promising candidates is fluid antenna system (FAS). Unlike existing systems, FAS is a novel communication technology where its antenna can freely change its position and shape within a given space. Compared to the traditional systems, this unique capability has the potential of providing higher diversity and interference-free communications. Nevertheless, the performance limits of FAS remain unclear as its system properties are difficult to analyze. To address this, we approximate the outage probability and diversity gain of FAS in closed-form expressions. We then propose a suboptimal FAS with $N^{*}$ ports, where a significant gain can be obtained over FAS with $N^{*}-1$ ports whilst FAS with $N^{*}+1$ ports only yields marginal improvement over the proposed suboptimal FAS. In this paper, we also provide analytical and simulation results to unfold the key factors that affect the performance of FAS. Limited to systems with one active radio frequency (RF)-chain, we show that the proposed suboptimal FAS outperforms single-antenna (SISO) system and selection combining (SC) system in terms of outage probability. Interestingly, when the given space is $\fracλ{2}$, the outage probability of the proposed suboptimal FAS with one active RF-chain achieves near to that of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) system with multiple active RF-chains.

Speaker Diaphragm Excursion Prediction: deep attention and online adaptation

Speaker protection algorithm is to leverage the playback signal properties to prevent over excursion while maintaining maximum loudness, especially for the mobile phone with tiny loudspeakers. This paper proposes efficient DL solutions to accurately model and predict the nonlinear excursion, which is challenging for conventional solutions. Firstly, we build the experiment and pre-processing pipeline, where the feedback current and voltage are sampled as input, and laser is employed to measure the excursion as ground truth. Secondly, one FFTNet model is proposed to explore the dominant low-frequency and other unknown harmonics, and compares to a baseline ConvNet model. In addition, BN re-estimation is designed to explore the online adaptation; and INT8 quantization based on AI Model efficiency toolkit (AIMET\footnote{AIMET is a product of Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc.}) is applied to further reduce the complexity. The proposed algorithm is verified in two speakers and 3 typical deployment scenarios, and $>$99\% residual DC is less than 0.1 mm, much better than traditional solutions.

Distributed Information Bottleneck for a Primitive Gaussian Diamond MIMO Channel

This paper considers the distributed information bottleneck (D-IB) problem for a primitive Gaussian diamond channel with two relays and MIMO Rayleigh fading. The channel state is an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) process known at the relays but unknown to the destination. The relays are oblivious, i.e., they are unaware of the codebook and treat the transmitted signal as a random process with known statistics. The bottleneck constraints prevent the relays to communicate the channel state information (CSI) perfectly to the destination. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node knows the CSI and the relays can cooperate with each other, and also two achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that the lower bounds obtained by the proposed achievable schemes can come close to the upper bound on a wide range of relevant system parameters.

Recordism: A social-scientific prospect of blockchain from social, legal, financial, and technological perspectives

Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize the architecture of cyberspace by transforming the way information is stored, circulated, and exchanged in cyberspace through decentralization, transparency, and de-identification. This means that ordinary participants can simultaneously become traders, miners, retailers, and customers, thus breaking down barriers, reducing the information gap between participants in the community, and contributing to the futuristic metaverse with an open, progressive, and equal ideology. The impact of this information transformation empowered by blockchain extends to our understanding of methodology, legal governance in cyberspace, and financial and technological development. This study asks: what are the implications of the blockchain-driven information revolution for society and social sciences? In order to answer this main question, the paper focuses on four key perspectives: methodological, legal, financial, and technical. Through the analysis of these four perspectives, the paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of blockchain on society, the social sciences, and technology, making a contribution to current scholarship. It finds that blockchain is not only an innovative cognition method, but also a community representative, serving as a source of trust, a governance watchdog, an enforcer of cyber laws, and an incubator for future technologies. Despite some challenges in integrating blockchain with existing social structures, this paper concludes that blockchain has the potential to play a significant role in shaping the future.

RZCR: Zero-shot Character Recognition via Radical-based Reasoning

The long-tail effect is a common issue that limits the performance of deep learning models on real-world datasets. Character image datasets are also affected by such unbalanced data distribution due to differences in character usage frequency. Thus, current character recognition methods are limited when applied in the real world, especially for the categories in the tail that lack training samples, e.g., uncommon characters. In this paper, we propose a zero-shot character recognition framework via radical-based reasoning, called RZCR, to improve the recognition performance of few-sample character categories in the tail. Specifically, we exploit radicals, the graphical units of characters, by decomposing and reconstructing characters according to orthography. RZCR consists of a visual semantic fusion-based radical information extractor (RIE) and a knowledge graph character reasoner (KGR). RIE aims to recognize candidate radicals and their possible structural relations from character images in parallel. The results are then fed into KGR to recognize the target character by reasoning with a knowledge graph. We validate our method on multiple datasets, and RZCR shows promising experimental results, especially on few-sample character datasets.

Fast vehicle detection algorithm based on lightweight YOLO7-tiny

The swift and precise detection of vehicles plays a significant role in intelligent transportation systems. Current vehicle detection algorithms encounter challenges of high computational complexity, low detection rate, and limited feasibility on mobile devices. To address these issues, this paper proposes a lightweight vehicle detection algorithm based on YOLOv7-tiny (You Only Look Once version seven) called Ghost-YOLOv7. The width of model is scaled to 0.5 and the standard convolution of the backbone network is replaced with Ghost convolution to achieve a lighter network and improve the detection speed; then a self-designed Ghost bi-directional feature pyramid network (Ghost-BiFPN) is embedded into the neck network to enhance feature extraction capability of the algorithm and enriches semantic information; and a Ghost Decouoled Head (GDH) is employed for accurate prediction of vehicle location and species; finally, a coordinate attention mechanism is introduced into the output layer to suppress environmental interference. The WIoU loss function is employed to further enhance the detection accuracy. Ablation experiments results on the PASCAL VOC dataset demonstrate that Ghost-YOLOv7 outperforms the original YOLOv7-tiny model. It achieving a 29.8% reduction in computation, 37.3% reduction in the number of parameters, 35.1% reduction in model weights, 1.1% higher mean average precision (mAP), the detection speed is higher 27FPS compared with the original algorithm. Ghost-YOLOv7 was also compared on KITTI and BIT-vehicle datasets as well, and the results show that this algorithm has the overall best performance.

DecentRAN: Decentralized Radio Access Network for 5.5G and beyond

Radio Access Network faces challenges from privacy and flexible wide area and local area network access. RAN is limited from providing local service directly due to centralized design of cellular network and concerns of user privacy and data security. DecentRAN or Decentralized Radio Access Network offers an alternative perspective to cope with the emerging demands of 5G Non-public Network and the hybrid deployment of 5GS and Wi-Fi in the campus network. Starting from Public key as an Identity, independent mutual authentication between UE and RAN are made possible in a privacy-preserving manner. With the introduction of decentralized architecture and network functions using blockchain and smart contracts, DecentRAN has ability to provide users with locally managed, end-to-end encrypted 5G NPN and the potential connectivity to Local Area Network via campus routers. Furthermore, the performance regarding throughput and latency are discussed, offering the deployment guidance for DecentRAN.

Characterizing the Performance of Emerging Deep Learning, Graph, and High Performance Computing Workloads Under Interference

Throughput-oriented computing via co-running multiple applications in the same machine has been widely adopted to achieve high hardware utilization and energy saving on modern supercomputers and data centers. However, efficiently co-running applications raises new design challenges, mainly because applications with diverse requirements can stress out shared hardware resources (IO, Network and Cache) at various levels. The disparities in resource usage can result in interference, which in turn can lead to unpredictable co-running behaviors. To better understand application interference, prior work provided detailed execution characterization. However, these characterization approaches either emphasize on traditional benchmarks or fall into a single application domain. To address this issue, we study 25 up-to-date applications and benchmarks from various application domains and form 625 consolidation pairs to thoroughly analyze the execution interference caused by application co-running. Moreover, we leverage mini-benchmarks and real applications to pinpoint the provenance of co-running interference in both hardware and software aspects.

A Registration- and Uncertainty-based Framework for White Matter Tract Segmentation With Only One Annotated Subject

White matter (WM) tract segmentation based on diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) plays an important role in the analysis of human health and brain diseases. However, the annotation of WM tracts is time-consuming and needs experienced neuroanatomists. In this study, to explore tract segmentation in the challenging setting of minimal annotations, we propose a novel framework utilizing only one annotated subject (subject-level one-shot) for tract segmentation. Our method is constructed by proposed registration-based peak augmentation (RPA) and uncertainty-based refining (URe) modules. RPA module synthesizes pseudo subjects and their corresponding labels to improve the tract segmentation performance. The proposed URe module alleviates the negative influence of the low-confidence voxels on pseudo subjects. Experimental results show that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods by a large margin, and our proposed modules are effective. Overall, our method achieves accurate whole-brain tract segmentation with only one annotated subject. Our code is available at https://github.com/HaoXu0507/ISBI2023-One-Shot-WM-Tract-Segmentation.

Label prompt for multi-label text classification

One of the key problems in multi-label text classification is how to take advantage of the correlation among labels. However, it is very challenging to directly model the correlations among labels in a complex and unknown label space. In this paper, we propose a Label Mask multi-label text classification model (LM-MTC), which is inspired by the idea of cloze questions of language model. LM-MTC is able to capture implicit relationships among labels through the powerful ability of pre-train language models. On the basis, we assign a different token to each potential label, and randomly mask the token with a certain probability to build a label based Masked Language Model (MLM). We train the MTC and MLM together, further improving the generalization ability of the model. A large number of experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
