Mass and Magnetic distributions in Self Gravitating Super Alfvenic Turbulence with AMR

In this work, we present the mass and magnetic distributions found in a recent Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) MHD simulation of supersonic, \sa, self gravitating turbulence. Powerlaw tails are found in both volume density and magnetic field probability density functions, with $P(ρ) \propto ρ^{-1.67}$ and $P(B)\propto B^{-2.74}$. A power law is also found between magnetic field strength and density, with $B\propto ρ^{0.48}$, throughout the collapsing gas. The mass distribution of gravitationally bound cores is shown to be in excellent agreement with recent observation of prestellar cores. The mass to flux distribution of cores is also found to be in excellent agreement with recent Zeeman splitting measurements.

A proof of the Faber intersection number conjecture

We prove the famous Faber intersection number conjecture and other more general results by using a recursion formula of $n$-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. We also present some vanishing properties of Gromov-Witten invariants.

Plans for PANDA Online Computing

The PANDA experiment will not use any hardware trigger, i.e. all raw data are streaming in the data acquisition with a bandwidth of ~280 GB/s. The PANDA Online System is designed to perform data reduction by a factor of ~800 by reconstruction algorithms programmed in VHDL (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) on FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays).

The n-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

Using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we prove a recursive formula of the $n$-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. It has been used to prove the Faber intersection number conjecture and motivated us to find some conjectural vanishing identities for Gromov-Witten invariants. The latter has been proved recently by X. Liu and R. Pandharipande. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of $n$-point functions in terms of summation over binary trees.

Intersection numbers and automorphisms of stable curves

Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Recursion formulae of higher Weil-Petersson volumes

In this paper we study effective recursion formulae for computing intersection numbers of mixed $ψ$ and $κ$ classes on moduli spaces of curves. By using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we generalize Mulase-Safnuk form of Mirzakhani's recursion and prove a recursion formula of higher Weil-Petersson volumes. We also present recursion formulae to compute intersection pairings in the tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves.

Turbulence and Dynamo in Galaxy Cluster Medium: Implications on the Origin of Cluster Magnetic Fields

We present self-consistent cosmological magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations that simultaneously follow the formation of a galaxy cluster and the magnetic field ejection by an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find that the magnetic fields ejected by the AGNs, though initially distributed in relatively small volumes, can be transported throughout the cluster and be further amplified by the intra-cluster medium (ICM) turbulence during the cluster formation process. The ICM turbulence is shown to be generated and sustained by the frequent mergers of smaller halos. Furthermore, a cluster-wide dynamo process is shown to exist in the ICM and amplify the magnetic field energy and flux. The total magnetic energy in the cluster can reach $\sim$ $10^{61}$ ergs while micro Gauss ($μ$G) fields can distribute over $\sim$ Mpc scales throughout the whole cluster. This finding shows that magnetic fields from AGNs, being further amplified by the ICM turbulence through small-scale dynamo processes, can be the origin of cluster-wide magnetic fields.

Cosmological AMR MHD with Enzo

In this work, we present MHDEnzo, the extension of the cosmological code Enzo to include the effects magnetic fields through the ideal MHD approximation. We use a higher order Godunov Riemann solver for the computation of interface fluxes. We use two constrained transport methods to compute the electric field from those interface fluxes, which simultaneously advances the induction equation and maintains the divergence of the magnetic field. A third order divergence free reconstruction technique is used to interpolate the magnetic fields in the block structured AMR framework already extant in Enzo. This reconstruction also preserves the divergence of the magnetic field to machine precision. We use operator splitting to include gravity and cosmological expansion. We then present a series of cosmological and non cosmological tests problems to demonstrate the quality of solution resulting from this combination of solvers.

The Biermann Battery in Cosmological MHD Simulations of Population III Star Formation

We report the results of the first self-consistent three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement magnetohydrodynamical simulations of Population III star formation including the Biermann Battery effect. We find that the Population III stars formed including this effect are both qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those from hydrodynamics-only (non-MHD) cosmological simulations. We observe peak magnetic fields of ~10^-9 G in the center of our star-forming halo at z ~ 17.55. The magnetic fields created by the Biermann Battery effect are predominantly formed early in the evolution of the primordial halo at low density and large spatial scales, and then grow through compression and by shear flows. The fields seen in this calculation are never large enough to be dynamically important (with beta >= 10^{15} at all times), and should be considered the minimum possible fields in existence during Population III star formation, and may be seed fields for the stellar dynamo or the magnetorotational instability at higher densities and smaller spatial scales.

A cosmological AMR MHD module for Enzo

Magnetic fields play an important role in almost all astrophysical phenomena including star formation. But due to the difficulty in analytic modeling and observation, magnetic fields are still poorly studied and numerical simulation has become a major tool. We have implemented a cosmological magnetohydrodynamics package for Enzo which is an AMR hydrodynamics code designed to simulate structure formation. We use the TVD solver developed by S. Li as the base solver. In addition, we employ the constrained transport(CT) algorithm as described by D. Balsara. For interpolation magnetic fields to fine grids we used a divergence free quadratic reconstruction, also described by Balsara. We present results from several test problems including MHD caustics, MHD pancake and galaxy cluster formation with magnetic fields. We also discuss possible applications of our AMR MHD code to first star research.

New properties of the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

We present certain new properties about the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$, including a simple explicit formula of $n$-point functions and several new identities of intersection numbers. In particular we prove a new identity, which together with a conjectural identity implies the famous Faber's conjecture about relations in $\mathcal R^{g-2}(\sM_g)$. These new identities clarify the mysterious constant in Faber's conjecture and uncover novel combinatorial structures of intersection numbers. We also discuss some numerical properties of Hodge integrals which have provided numerous inspirations for this work.

New results of intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

We present a series of new results we obtained recently about the intersection numbers of tautological classes on moduli spaces of curves, including a simple formula of the n-point functions for Witten's $τ$ classes, an effective recursion formula to compute higher Weil-Petersson volumes, several new recursion formulae of intersection numbers and our proof of a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber concerning denominators of intersection numbers. We also present Virasoro and KdV properties of generating functions of general mixed $κ$ and $ψ$ intersections.

Modulo Three Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution

An important global property of a bit string is the number of ones in it. It has been found that the parity (odd or even) of this number can be found by a sequence of deterministic, translational invariant cellular automata with parallel update in succession for a total of O(N^2) time. In this paper, we discover a way to check if this number is divisible by three using the same kind of cellular automata in O(N^3) time. We also speculate that the method described here could be generalized to check if it is divisible by four and other positive integers.

Parity Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution

The parity of a bit string of length $N$ is a global quantity that can be efficiently compute using a global counter in ${O} (N)$ time. But is it possible to find the parity using cellular automata with a set of local rule tables without using any global counter? Here, we report a way to solve this problem using a number of $r=1$ binary, uniform, parallel and deterministic cellular automata applied in succession for a total of ${O} (N^2)$ time.
