DualGAN: Unsupervised Dual Learning for Image-to-Image Translation

Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for cross-domain image-to-image translation have made much progress recently. Depending on the task complexity, thousands to millions of labeled image pairs are needed to train a conditional GAN. However, human labeling is expensive, even impractical, and large quantities of data may not always be available. Inspired by dual learning from natural language translation, we develop a novel dual-GAN mechanism, which enables image translators to be trained from two sets of unlabeled images from two domains. In our architecture, the primal GAN learns to translate images from domain U to those in domain V, while the dual GAN learns to invert the task. The closed loop made by the primal and dual tasks allows images from either domain to be translated and then reconstructed. Hence a loss function that accounts for the reconstruction error of images can be used to train the translators. Experiments on multiple image translation tasks with unlabeled data show considerable performance gain of DualGAN over a single GAN. For some tasks, DualGAN can even achieve comparable or slightly better results than conditional GAN trained on fully labeled data.

Towards Verifying Semantic Roles Co-occurrence

Semantic role theory considers roles as a small universal set of unanalyzed entities. It means that formally there are no restrictions on role combinations. We argue that the semantic roles co-occur in verb representations. It means that there are hidden restrictions on role combinations. To demonstrate that a practical and evidence-based approach has been built on in-depth analysis of the largest verb database VerbNet. The consequences of this approach are considered.

Event Representation through Semantic Roles: Evaluation of Coverage

Semantic role theory is a widely used approach for event representation. Yet, there are multiple indications that semantic role paradigm is necessary but not sufficient to cover all elements of event structure. We conducted an analysis of semantic role representation for events to provide an empirical evidence of insufficiency. The consequence of that is a hybrid role-scalar approach. The results are considered as preliminary in investigation of semantic roles coverage for event representation.

Toward Understanding the Impact of Staleness in Distributed Machine Learning

Many distributed machine learning (ML) systems adopt the non-synchronous execution in order to alleviate the network communication bottleneck, resulting in stale parameters that do not reflect the latest updates. Despite much development in large-scale ML, the effects of staleness on learning are inconclusive as it is challenging to directly monitor or control staleness in complex distributed environments. In this work, we study the convergence behaviors of a wide array of ML models and algorithms under delayed updates. Our extensive experiments reveal the rich diversity of the effects of staleness on the convergence of ML algorithms and offer insights into seemingly contradictory reports in the literature. The empirical findings also inspire a new convergence analysis of stochastic gradient descent in non-convex optimization under staleness, matching the best-known convergence rate of O(1/\sqrt{T}).

Estimating Precipitation Extremes using Log-Histospline

One of the commonly used approaches to modeling extremes is the peaks-over-threshold (POT) method. The POT method models exceedances over a threshold that is sufficiently high or low so that the exceedance has approximately a generalized Pareto distribution (GPD). This method requires the selection of a threshold that might affect the estimates. Here we propose an alternative method, the Log-Histospline (LHSpline), to explore modeling the tail behavior and the remainder of the density in one step using the full range of the data. LHSpline applies a smoothing spline model to a finely binned histogram of the log transformed data to estimate its log density. By construction, a LHSpline estimation is constrained to have polynomial tail behavior, a feature commonly observed in daily rainfall observations. We illustrate the LHSpline method by analyzing precipitation data collected in Houston, Texas.

AutoLoss: Learning Discrete Schedules for Alternate Optimization

Many machine learning problems involve iteratively and alternately optimizing different task objectives with respect to different sets of parameters. Appropriately scheduling the optimization of a task objective or a set of parameters is usually crucial to the quality of convergence. In this paper, we present AutoLoss, a meta-learning framework that automatically learns and determines the optimization schedule. AutoLoss provides a generic way to represent and learn the discrete optimization schedule from metadata, allows for a dynamic and data-driven schedule in ML problems that involve alternating updates of different parameters or from different loss objectives. We apply AutoLoss on four ML tasks: d-ary quadratic regression, classification using a multi-layer perceptron (MLP), image generation using GANs, and multi-task neural machine translation (NMT). We show that the AutoLoss controller is able to capture the distribution of better optimization schedules that result in higher quality of convergence on all four tasks. The trained AutoLoss controller is generalizable -- it can guide and improve the learning of a new task model with different specifications, or on different datasets.

High-throughput, high-resolution registration-free generated adversarial network microscopy

We combine generative adversarial network (GAN) with light microscopy to achieve deep learning super-resolution under a large field of view (FOV). By appropriately adopting prior microscopy data in an adversarial training, the neural network can recover a high-resolution, accurate image of new specimen from its single low-resolution measurement. Its capacity has been broadly demonstrated via imaging various types of samples, such as USAF resolution target, human pathological slides, fluorescence-labelled fibroblast cells, and deep tissues in transgenic mouse brain, by both wide-field and light-sheet microscopes. The gigapixel, multi-color reconstruction of these samples verifies a successful GAN-based single image super-resolution procedure. We also propose an image degrading model to generate low resolution images for training, making our approach free from the complex image registration during training dataset preparation. After a welltrained network being created, this deep learning-based imaging approach is capable of recovering a large FOV (~95 mm2), high-resolution (~1.7 μm) image at high speed (within 1 second), while not necessarily introducing any changes to the setup of existing microscopes.

Influence of drying temperature on morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films and the performance of solar cells

Photoelectric conversion efficiency of organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells has been rapidly raised and attracted great attention in recent years. The quality of perovskite films is vital for the performance of devices. We used the anti-solvent method to prepare CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ thin films by spin coating and dried them at various temperature to transform adduct MAI.PbI$_2$.DMSO into CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We researched in detail on the relationship between surface morphology of MAPbI$_3$ thin films fabricated by the anti-solvent method and various drying temperature. We found that surface roughness and grain size of CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ films together increased with increasing drying temperature. The larger grain size could efficiently reduce crystal boundaries which is advantageous for the suppression of photo-induced charge carrier recombination resulting in increase of FF. However, increase of surface roughness resulted in larger contact area at interface which might produce more tarp states and poorer wettability of HTM solution leading in decrease of Jsc. Surface morphology of MAPbI3 layer on the performance of solar cell devices is also an important research issue. By optimizing the drying temperature to 60 oC, the highest efficiency of 14.4% was achieved for the CH3NH3PbI3-based solar cell devices.

SCORES: Shape Composition with Recursive Substructure Priors

We introduce SCORES, a recursive neural network for shape composition. Our network takes as input sets of parts from two or more source 3D shapes and a rough initial placement of the parts. It outputs an optimized part structure for the composed shape, leading to high-quality geometry construction. A unique feature of our composition network is that it is not merely learning how to connect parts. Our goal is to produce a coherent and plausible 3D shape, despite large incompatibilities among the input parts. The network may significantly alter the geometry and structure of the input parts and synthesize a novel shape structure based on the inputs, while adding or removing parts to minimize a structure plausibility loss. We design SCORES as a recursive autoencoder network. During encoding, the input parts are recursively grouped to generate a root code. During synthesis, the root code is decoded, recursively, to produce a new, coherent part assembly. Assembled shape structures may be novel, with little global resemblance to training exemplars, yet have plausible substructures. SCORES therefore learns a hierarchical substructure shape prior based on per-node losses. It is trained on structured shapes from ShapeNet, and is applied iteratively to reduce the plausibility loss.We showresults of shape composition from multiple sources over different categories of man-made shapes and compare with state-of-the-art alternatives, demonstrating that our network can significantly expand the range of composable shapes for assembly-based modeling.

Semantic WordRank: Generating Finer Single-Document Summarizations

We present Semantic WordRank (SWR), an unsupervised method for generating an extractive summary of a single document. Built on a weighted word graph with semantic and co-occurrence edges, SWR scores sentences using an article-structure-biased PageRank algorithm with a Softplus function adjustment, and promotes topic diversity using spectral subtopic clustering under the Word-Movers-Distance metric. We evaluate SWR on the DUC-02 and SummBank datasets and show that SWR produces better summaries than the state-of-the-art algorithms over DUC-02 under common ROUGE measures. We then show that, under the same measures over SummBank, SWR outperforms each of the three human annotators (aka. judges) and compares favorably with the combined performance of all judges.

Effective Predictions of Gaokao Admission Scores for College Applications in Mainland China

Gaokao is the annual academic qualification examination for college admissions in mainland China. Organized by each provincial-level administrative region (PAR), Gaokao takes place at the same time nationwide in early June. To enroll in a university in September, students must take Gaokao and submit common applications for admission to their home PAR Gaokao office in July, listing a small and fixed number of universities and majors they intend to attend and study. About 9.5 million high- school seniors participate in Gaokao every year, and the Gaokao scores are good for just one year. A student has a strong chance to be accepted if their Gaokao score is better than the admission scores of the universities they selected in their applications. However, the admission scores of universities are unknown at the time when filling out applications, which to be determined dynamically during the admission process and may fluctuate from year to year. To increase their chances of acceptance to a best- suited university, students need to predict admission score of each university they are interested in. Early prediction methods are empirical without the backing of in-depth data studies. We fill this void by presenting well-tested mathematical models based on the ranking of Gaokao scores in a PAR. We show that our methods significantly outperform the methods commonly used by teachers and experts, and can predict admission scores with an accuracy of 91% within a 7-point margin in an exam of a 750-point grading scale.

Dual-label Deep LSTM Dereverberation For Speaker Verification

In this paper, we present a reverberation removal approach for speaker verification, utilizing dual-label deep neural networks (DNNs). The networks perform feature mapping between the spectral features of reverberant and clean speech. Long short term memory recurrent neural networks (LSTMs) are trained to map corrupted Mel filterbank (MFB) features to two sets of labels: i) the clean MFB features, and ii) either estimated pitch tracks or the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrogram of clean speech. The performance of reverberation removal is evaluated by equal error rates (EERs) of speaker verification experiments.

Fast and robust quantum control for multimode interactions by using shortcuts to adiabaticity

Adiabatic quantum control is a very important approach for quantum physics and quantum information processing. It holds the advantage with robustness to experimental imperfections but accumulates more decoherence due to the long evolution time. Here, we propose a universal protocol for fast and robust quantum control in multimode interactions of a quantum system by using shortcuts to adiabaticity. The results show this protocol can speed up the evolution of a multimode quantum system effectively, and it can also keep the robustness very good while adiabatic quantum control processes cannot. We apply this protocol for the quantum state transfer in quantum information processing in the photon-phonon interactions in an optomechanical system, showing a perfect result. These good features make this protocol have the capability of improving effectively the feasibility of the practical applications of multimode interactions in quantum information processing in experiment.

SketchyScene: Richly-Annotated Scene Sketches

We contribute the first large-scale dataset of scene sketches, SketchyScene, with the goal of advancing research on sketch understanding at both the object and scene level. The dataset is created through a novel and carefully designed crowdsourcing pipeline, enabling users to efficiently generate large quantities of realistic and diverse scene sketches. SketchyScene contains more than 29,000 scene-level sketches, 7,000+ pairs of scene templates and photos, and 11,000+ object sketches. All objects in the scene sketches have ground-truth semantic and instance masks. The dataset is also highly scalable and extensible, easily allowing augmenting and/or changing scene composition. We demonstrate the potential impact of SketchyScene by training new computational models for semantic segmentation of scene sketches and showing how the new dataset enables several applications including image retrieval, sketch colorization, editing, and captioning, etc. The dataset and code can be found at https://github.com/SketchyScene/SketchyScene.

Application of compact TiO$_2$ layer fabricated by pulsed laser deposition in organometal trihalide perovskite solar cells

Organometal trihalide perovskite solar cells have been rapidly developed and attracted much attention in recent years due to their high photoelectric conversion efficiency and low cost. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a widely adopted technology which is used in the preparation of thin films, especially oxide thin films. With this technology, the thickness and composition of films can be conveniently and accurately controlled. In the structure of perovskite solar cells, TiO$_2$ layer working as the n-type semiconductor is used to block holes and transport electrons into electrode, which is crucial for the performance of whole devices. We introduced the PLD technique into preparation of TiO$_2$ layer. In comparison with common spin coating method, TiO$_2$ layer prepared by this technique is ultrathin and more compact. Compact TiO$_2$ (c-TiO$_2$) layers with optimized thickness of 32 nm have been prepared by the PLD method and the highest efficiency of 13.95 % for the MAPbI$_3$-based solar cell devices has been achieved.

Electric field tunable superconductor-semiconductor coupling in Majorana nanowires

We study the effect of external electric fields on superconductor-semiconductor coupling by measuring the electron transport in InSb semiconductor nanowires coupled to an epitaxially grown Al superconductor. We find that the gate voltage induced electric fields can greatly modify the coupling strength, which has consequences for the proximity induced superconducting gap, effective g-factor, and spin-orbit coupling, which all play a key role in understanding Majorana physics. We further show that level repulsion due to spin-orbit coupling in a finite size system can lead to seemingly stable zero bias conductance peaks, which mimic the behavior of Majorana zero modes. Our results improve the understanding of realistic Majorana nanowire systems.

Theoretical investigation of novel electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of metallic hydrogen at 495 GPa

Atomic metallic hydrogen has been produced in the laboratory at high pressure and low temperature, prompting further investigations of its different properties. However, purely experimental approaches are infeasible because of the extreme requirements in producing and preserving the metastable phase. Here we perform a systematic investigation of the electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen at 495 GPa using first-principles calculations. We calculate the electronic structure and dielectric function to verify the metallic behaviour of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen. The calculated total plasma frequency from both intraband and interband transitions, 33.40 eV, agrees well with the experimental result. The mechanical properties including elastic stability and sound velocity are also investigated. The mechanical stability of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is limited by shear modulus other than bulk modulus, and the high Young's modulus indicates that $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is a stiff material. After investigating the lattice vibrational properties, we study the thermodynamical properties and lattice anharmonicity to understand thermal behaviours in metallic hydrogen. Finally, the lattice thermal conductivity of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is calculated to be 194.72 W/mK and 172.96 W/mK along the $x$ and $z$ directions, respectively. Using metallic hydrogen as an example, we demonstrate that first-principles calculations can be a game-changing solution to understand a variety of material properties in extreme conditions.
