Diphoton excess at 750 GeV: gluon-gluon fusion or quark-antiquark annihilation?

Recently, ATLAS and CMS collaboration reported an excess in the diphoton events, which can be explained by a new resonance with mass around 750 GeV. In this work, we explored the possibility of identifying if the hypothetical new resonance is produced through gluon-gluon fusion or quark-antiquark annihilation, or tagging the beam. Three different observables for beam tagging, namely the rapidity and transverse momentum distribution of the diphoton, and one tagged bottom-jet cross section, are proposed. Combining the information gained from these observables, a clear distinction of the production mechanism for the diphoton resonance is promising.

Towards intrinsic phonon transport in single-layer MoS$_2$

The intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity of MoS$_2$ is an important aspect in the design of MoS$_2$-based nanoelectronic devices. We investigate the lattice dynamics properties of MoS$_2$ by first principles calculations. The intrinsic thermal conductivity of single-layer MoS$_2$ is calculated using the Boltzmann transport equation for phonons. The obtained thermal conductivity agrees well with the measurements. The contributions of acoustic and optical phonons to the lattice thermal conductivity are evaluated. The size dependence of thermal conductivity is investigated as well.

Light transport behaviours in quasi-1D disordered waveguides composed of random photonic lattices

We present a numerical study on the light transport properties which are modulated by the disorder strength in quasi-one-dimensional disordered waveguide which consists of periodically arranged scatterers with random dielectric constant. The transport mean free path is found to stay inversely proportional to the square of the relative fluctuation of the dielectric constant as in the 1D and 2D cases but with . The transport properties of light through a sample with a fixed size can be modulated from ballistic to localized regime as well, and a generalized scaling function is defined to determine the light transport status in such a sample. The calculation of the diffusion coefficient and the energy density profile of the most transmitted eigenchannel clearly exhibits the transition of transport behaviour from diffusion to localization.

Poseidon: A System Architecture for Efficient GPU-based Deep Learning on Multiple Machines

Deep learning (DL) has achieved notable successes in many machine learning tasks. A number of frameworks have been developed to expedite the process of designing and training deep neural networks (DNNs), such as Caffe, Torch and Theano. Currently they can harness multiple GPUs on a single machine, but are unable to use GPUs that are distributed across multiple machines; as even average-sized DNNs can take days to train on a single GPU with 100s of GBs to TBs of data, distributed GPUs present a prime opportunity for scaling up DL. However, the limited bandwidth available on commodity Ethernet networks presents a bottleneck to distributed GPU training, and prevents its trivial realization. To investigate how to adapt existing frameworks to efficiently support distributed GPUs, we propose Poseidon, a scalable system architecture for distributed inter-machine communication in existing DL frameworks. We integrate Poseidon with Caffe and evaluate its performance at training DNNs for object recognition. Poseidon features three key contributions that accelerate DNN training on clusters: (1) a three-level hybrid architecture that allows Poseidon to support both CPU-only and GPU-equipped clusters, (2) a distributed wait-free backpropagation (DWBP) algorithm to improve GPU utilization and to balance communication, and (3) a structure-aware communication protocol (SACP) to minimize communication overheads. We empirically show that Poseidon converges to same objectives as a single machine, and achieves state-of-art training speedup across multiple models and well-established datasets using a commodity GPU cluster of 8 nodes (e.g. 4.5x speedup on AlexNet, 4x on GoogLeNet, 4x on CIFAR-10). On the much larger ImageNet22K dataset, Poseidon with 8 nodes achieves better speedup and competitive accuracy to recent CPU-based distributed systems such as Adam and Le et al., which use 10s to 1000s of nodes.

The Volume-Correlation Subspace Detector

Detecting the presence of subspace signals with unknown clutter (or interference) is a widely known difficult problem encountered in various signal processing applications. Traditional methods fails to solve this problem because they require knowledge of clutter subspace, which has to be learned or estimated beforehand. In this paper, we propose a novel detector, named volume-correlation subspace detector, that can detect signal from clutter without any knowledge of clutter subspace. This detector effectively makes use of the hidden geometrical connection between the known target signal subspace to be detected and the subspace constructed from sampled data to ascertain the existence of target signal. It is derived based upon a mathematical tool, which basically calculates volume of parallelotope in high-dimensional linear space. Theoretical analysis show that while the proposed detector is detecting the known target signal, the unknown clutter signal can be explored and eliminated simultaneously. This advantage is called "detecting while learning", and implies perfect performance of this detector in the clutter environment. Numerical simulation validated our conclusion.

A TDOA technique with Super-Resolution based on the Volume Cross-Correlation Function

Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is widely used in wireless localization systems. Among the enormous approaches of TDOA, high resolution TDOA algorithms have drawn much attention for its ability to resolve closely spaced signal delays in multipath environment. However, the state-of-art high resolution TDOA algorithms still have performance weakness on resolving time delays in a wireless channel with dense multipath effect, as well as difficulties in implementation for their high computation complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel TDOA algorithm with super resolution based on a multi-dimensional cross-correlation function: the Volume Cross-Correlation Function (VCC). The proposed TDOA algorithm has excellent time resolution capability in multipath environment, and it also has a much lower computational complexity. Because our algorithm does not require priori knowledge about the waveform or power spectrum of transmitted signals, it has great potential of usage in various passive wireless localization systems. Numerical simulations is also provided to demonstrate the validity of our conclusion.

Carving complex many-atom entangled states by single-photon detection

We propose a versatile and efficient method to generate a broad class of complex entangled states of many atoms via the detection of a single photon. For an atomic ensemble contained in a strongly coupled optical cavity illuminated by weak single- or multi-frequency light, the atom-light interaction entangles the frequency spectrum of a transmitted photon with the collective spin of the atomic ensemble. Simple time-resolved detection of the transmitted photon then projects the atomic ensemble into a desired pure entangled state. This method can be implemented with existing technology, yields high success probability per trials, and can generate complex entangled states such as multicomponent Schrödinger cat states with high fidelity.

Online Markov decision processes with policy iteration

The online Markov decision process (MDP) is a generalization of the classical Markov decision process that incorporates changing reward functions. In this paper, we propose practical online MDP algorithms with policy iteration and theoretically establish a sublinear regret bound. A notable advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it can be easily combined with function approximation, and thus large and possibly continuous state spaces can be efficiently handled. Through experiments, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

Entangled collective-spin states of atomic ensembles under non-uniform atom-light interaction

We consider the optical generation and verification of entanglement in atomic ensembles under non-uniform interaction between the ensemble and an optical mode. We show that for a wide range of parameters a system of non-uniformly coupled atomic spins can be described as an ensemble of uniformly coupled spins with a reduced effective atom-light coupling and a reduced effective atom number, with a reduction factor of order unity given by the ensemble-mode geometry. This description is valid even for complex entangled states with arbitrary phase-space distribution functions as long as the detection does not resolve single spins. Furthermore, we derive an analytic formula for the observable entanglement in the case, of relevance in practice, where the ensemble-mode coupling differs between state generation and measurement.

Thermal conductivity of monolayer MoS2, MoSe2, and WS2: Interplay of mass effect, interatomic bonding and anharmonicity

Phonons are essential for understanding the thermal properties in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, which limit their thermal performance for potential applications. We investigate the lattice dynamics and thermodynamic properties of MoS2, MoSe2, and WS2 by first principles calculations. The obtained phonon frequencies and thermal conductivities agree well with the measurements. Our results show that the thermal conductivity of MoS2 is highest among the three materials due to its much lower average atomic mass. We also discuss the competition between mass effect, interatomic bonding and anharmonic vibrations in determining the thermal conductivity of WS2. Strong covalent W-S bonding and low anharmonicity in WS2 are found to be crucial in understanding its much higher thermal conductivity compared to MoSe2.

Resolving the Degeneracy in Single Higgs Production with Higgs Pair Production

The Higgs boson production can be affected by several anomalous couplings, e.g. $c_t$ and $c_g$ anomalous couplings. Precise measurement of $gg\to h$ production yields two degenerate parameter spaces of $c_t$ and $c_g$; one parameter space exhibits the SM limit while the other does not. Such a degeneracy could be resolved by Higgs boson pair production. In this work we adapt the strategy suggested by the ATLAS collaboration to explore the potential of distinguishing the degeneracy at the 14 TeV LHC. If the $c_t$ anomalous coupling is induced only by the operator $H^†H \bar Q_L \tilde{H} t_R$, then the non-SM-like band could be excluded with an integrated luminosity of $\sim 235~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Making use of the fact that the Higgs boson pair is mainly produced through an $s$-wave scattering, we propose an analytical function to describe the fraction of signal events surviving a series of experimental cuts for a given invariant mass of Higgs boson pair. The function is model independent and can be applied to estimate the discovery potential of various NP models.

Entanglement with Negative Wigner Function of Three Thousand Atoms Heralded by One Photon

Quantum-mechanically correlated (entangled) states of many particles are of interest in quantum information, quantum computing and quantum metrology. Metrologically useful entangled states of large atomic ensembles have been experimentally realized, but these states display Gaussian spin distribution functions with a non-negative Wigner function. Non-Gaussian entangled states have been produced in small ensembles of ions, and very recently in large atomic ensembles. Here, we generate entanglement in a large atomic ensemble via the interaction with a very weak laser pulse; remarkably, the detection of a single photon prepares several thousand atoms in an entangled state. We reconstruct a negative-valued Wigner function, an important hallmark of nonclassicality, and verify an entanglement depth (minimum number of mutually entangled atoms) of 2910(190) out of 3100 atoms. This is the first time a negative Wigner function or the mutual entanglement of virtually all atoms have been attained in an ensemble containing more than a few particles. While the achieved purity of the state is slightly below the threshold for entanglement-induced metrological gain, further technical improvement should allow the generation of states that surpass this threshold, and of more complex Schrodinger cat states for quantum metrology and information processing. More generally, our results demonstrate the power of heralded methods for entanglement generation, and illustrate how the information contained in a single photon can drastically alter the quantum state of a large system.

Facile Self-Assembly of Quantum Plasmonic Circuit Components

Efficient coupling between solid state quantum emitters and plasmonic waveguides is important for the realization of integrated circuits for quantum information, communication and sensing. However, realization of plasmonic circuits is still scarce, particularly due to challenges associated with accurate positioning of quantum emitters near plasmonic resonators. Current pathways for the construction of plasmonic circuits involve cumbersome and costly methods such as scanning atomic force microscopy or mechanical manipulation, where individual elements are physically relocated using the scanning tip. Here, we introduce a simple, fast and cost effective chemical self-assembly method for the attachment of two primary components of a practical plasmonic circuit: a single photon emitter and a waveguide. Our method enables coupling of nanodiamonds with a single quantum emitter (the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center) onto the terminal of a silver nanowire, by simply varying the concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) in a reaction solution. The AA concentration is used to control the extent of agglomeration, and can be optimised so as to cause preferential, selective activation of the tips of the nanowires. The nanowire-nanodiamond structures show efficient plasmonic coupling of fluorescence emission from single NV centers into surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes, evidenced by a more than two-fold reduction in fluorescence lifetime and an increase in fluorescence intensity.

When Doesn't Cokriging Outperform Kriging?

Although cokriging in theory should yield smaller or equal prediction variance than kriging, this outperformance sometimes is hard to see in practice. This should motivate theoretical studies on cokriging. In general, there is a lack of theoretical results for cokriging. In this work, we provide some theoretical results to compare cokriging with kriging by examining some explicit models and specific sampling schemes. [arXiv:1507.08017]

Task Selection for Bandit-Based Task Assignment in Heterogeneous Crowdsourcing

Task selection (picking an appropriate labeling task) and worker selection (assigning the labeling task to a suitable worker) are two major challenges in task assignment for crowdsourcing. Recently, worker selection has been successfully addressed by the bandit-based task assignment (BBTA) method, while task selection has not been thoroughly investigated yet. In this paper, we experimentally compare several task selection strategies borrowed from active learning literature, and show that the least confidence strategy significantly improves the performance of task assignment in crowdsourcing.

Bandit-Based Task Assignment for Heterogeneous Crowdsourcing

We consider a task assignment problem in crowdsourcing, which is aimed at collecting as many reliable labels as possible within a limited budget. A challenge in this scenario is how to cope with the diversity of tasks and the task-dependent reliability of workers, e.g., a worker may be good at recognizing the name of sports teams, but not be familiar with cosmetics brands. We refer to this practical setting as heterogeneous crowdsourcing. In this paper, we propose a contextual bandit formulation for task assignment in heterogeneous crowdsourcing, which is able to deal with the exploration-exploitation trade-off in worker selection. We also theoretically investigate the regret bounds for the proposed method, and demonstrate its practical usefulness experimentally.

Chiral geometry in multiple chiral doublet bands

The chiral geometry of the multiple chiral doublet bands with identical configuration is discussed for different triaxial deformation parameters $γ$ in the particle rotor model with $πh_{11/2}\otimes νh_{11/2}^{-1}$. The energy spectra, electromagnetic transition probabilities $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$, angular momenta, and $K$-distributions are studied. It is demonstrated that the chirality still remains not only in the yrast and yrare bands, but also in the two higher excited bands when $γ$ deviates from $30^{\circ}$. The chiral geometry relies significantly on $γ$, and the chiral geometry of the two higher excited partner bands is not as good as that of the yrast and yrare doublet bands.

Hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum

We introduce a modified factorization formalism in quantum chromodynamics for hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum $p_T$. When $p_T$ is much larger than the invariant mass $Q$ of the vector boson, this new factorization formalism systematically resums the large fragmentation logarithms, $α_s^m\ln^m(p_T^2/Q^2)$, to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$. Using our modified factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions for $W$ and $Z$ boson production at high $p_T$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. Our NLO results are about $5\%$ larger in normalization, and they show improved convergence and moderate reduction of the scale variation compared to the NLO predictions derived in a conventional fixed-order perturbative expansion.
