Solving Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo Using Fewer Images by Jointly Optimizing Low-rank Matrix Completion and Integrability

We introduce a new, integrated approach to uncalibrated photometric stereo. We perform 3D reconstruction of Lambertian objects using multiple images produced by unknown, directional light sources. We show how to formulate a single optimization that includes rank and integrability constraints, allowing also for missing data. We then solve this optimization using the Alternate Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). We conduct extensive experimental evaluation on real and synthetic data sets. Our integrated approach is particularly valuable when performing photometric stereo using as few as 4-6 images, since the integrability constraint is capable of improving estimation of the linear subspace of possible solutions. We show good improvements over prior work in these cases.

Content-Centric Sparse Multicast Beamforming for Cache-Enabled Cloud RAN

This paper presents a content-centric transmission design in a cloud radio access network (cloud RAN) by incorporating multicasting and caching. Users requesting a same content form a multicast group and are served by a same cluster of base stations (BSs) cooperatively. Each BS has a local cache and it acquires the requested contents either from its local cache or from the central processor (CP) via backhaul links. We investigate the dynamic content-centric BS clustering and multicast beamforming with respect to both channel condition and caching status. We first formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem of minimizing the weighted sum of backhaul cost and transmit power under the quality-of-service constraint for each multicast group. Theoretical analysis reveals that all the BSs caching a requested content can be included in the BS cluster of this content, regardless of the channel conditions. Then we reformulate an equivalent sparse multicast beamforming (SBF) problem. By adopting smoothed $\ell_0$-norm approximation and other techniques, the SBF problem is transformed into the difference of convex (DC) programs and effectively solved using the convex-concave procedure algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate significant advantage of the proposed content-centric transmission. The effects of three heuristic caching strategies are also evaluated.

Analytical method to determine flexoelectric coupling coefficient at nanoscale

Flexoelectricity is defined as the coupling between strain gradient and polarization, which is expected to be remarkable at nanoscale. However, measuring the flexoelectricity at nanoscale is challenging. In the present work, an analytical method for measuring the flexoelectric coupling coefficient based on nanocompression technique is proposed. It is found that the flexoelectricity can induce stiffness softening of dielectric nano-cone-frustum. This phenomenon becomes more significant when the sample size decreases or the half cone angle increases. This method avoids measuring the electric polarization or current at nanoscale with dynamical loading, which can be beneficial to the flexoelectric measurement at nanoscale and design of flexoelectric nanodevices.

TeV Observations of the Galactic Plane with HAWC and Joint Analysis of GeV Data from Fermi

A number of Galactic sources emit GeV-TeV gamma rays that are produced through leptonic and/or hadronic mechanisms. Spectral analysis in this energy range is crucial in order to understand the emission mechanisms. The HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory, with a large field of view and location at $19^\circ$ N latitude, is surveying the Galactic Plane from high Galactic longitudes down to near the Galactic Center. Data taken with partially-constructed HAWC array in 2013-2014 exhibit TeV gamma-ray emission along the Galactic Plane. A high-level analysis likelihood framework for HAWC, also presented at this meeting, has been developed concurrently with the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood (3ML) architecture to deconvolve the Galactic sources and to perform multi-instrument analysis. It has been tested on early HAWC data and the same method will be applied on HAWC data with the full array. I will present preliminary results on Galactic sources from TeV observations with HAWC and from joint analysis on Fermi and HAWC data in GeV-TeV energy range.

A high-level analysis framework for HAWC

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory continuously observes gamma-rays between 100 GeV to 100 TeV in an instantaneous field of view of about 2 steradians above the array. The large amount of raw data, the importance of small number statistics, the large dynamic range of gamma-ray signals in time (1 - $10^8$ sec) and angular extent (0.1 - 100 degrees), and the growing need to directly compare results from different observatories pose some special challenges for the analysis of HAWC data. To address these needs, we have designed and implemented a modular analysis framework based on the method of maximum likelihood. The framework facilitates the calculation of a binned Poisson Log-likelihood value for a given physics model (i.e., source model), data set, and detector response. The parameters of the physics model (sky position, spectrum, angular extent, etc.) can be optimized through a likelihood maximization routine to obtain a best match to the data. In a similar way, the parameters of the detector response (absolute pointing, angular resolution, etc.) can be optimized using a well-known source such as the Crab Nebula. The framework was designed concurrently with the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood (3ML) architecture, and allows for the definition of a general collection of sources with individually varying spectral and spatial morphologies. Compatibility with the 3ML architecture allows to easily perform powerful joint fits with other observatories. In this contribution, we overview the design and capabilities of the HAWC analysis framework, stressing the overarching design points that have applicability to other astronomical and cosmic-ray observatories.

The Calibration System of the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory

The HAWC collaboration has recently completed the construction of a gamma-ray observatory at an altitude of 4100 meters on the slope of the Sierra Negra volcano in the state of Puebla, Mexico. In order to achieve an optimal angular resolution, energy reconstruction, and cosmic-ray background suppression for the air showers observed by HAWC, it is crucial to obtain good timing and charge calibrations of the photosensors in the detector. The HAWC calibration is based on a laser system which is able to deliver short light pulses to all the tanks in the array. The light intensity can range over 7 orders of magnitude, broad enough to cover all the dynamic range of the PMT readout electronics. In this contribution we will present the HAWC calibration system, together with the methods used to calibrate the detector.

Content-Centric Multicast Beamforming in Cache-Enabled Cloud Radio Access Networks

Multicast transmission and wireless caching are effective ways of reducing air and backhaul traffic load in wireless networks. This paper proposes to incorporate these two key ideas for content-centric multicast transmission in a cloud radio access network (RAN) where multiple base stations (BSs) are connected to a central processor (CP) via finite-capacity backhaul links. Each BS has a cache with finite storage size and is equipped with multiple antennas. The BSs cooperatively transmit contents, which are either stored in the local cache or fetched from the CP, to multiple users in the network. Users requesting a same content form a multicast group and are served by a same cluster of BSs cooperatively using multicast beamforming. Assuming fixed cache placement, this paper investigates the joint design of multicast beamforming and content-centric BS clustering by formulating an optimization problem of minimizing the total network cost under the quality-of-service (QoS) constraints for each multicast group. The network cost involves both the transmission power and the backhaul cost. We model the backhaul cost using the mixed $\ell_0/\ell_2$-norm of beamforming vectors. To solve this non-convex problem, we first approximate it using the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method and concave smooth functions. We then propose a difference of convex functions (DC) programming algorithm to obtain suboptimal solutions and show the connection of three smooth functions. Simulation results validate the advantage of multicasting and show the effects of different cache size and caching policies in cloud RAN.

The Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML)

Astrophysical sources are now observed by many different instruments at different wavelengths, from radio to high-energy gamma-rays, with an unprecedented quality. Putting all these data together to form a coherent view, however, is a very difficult task. Each instrument has its own data format, software and analysis procedure, which are difficult to combine. It is for example very challenging to perform a broadband fit of the energy spectrum of the source. The Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) aims to solve this issue, providing a common framework which allows for a coherent modeling of sources using all the available data, independent of their origin. At the same time, thanks to its architecture based on plug-ins, 3ML uses the existing official software of each instrument for the corresponding data in a way which is transparent to the user. 3ML is based on the likelihood formalism, in which a model summarizing our knowledge about a particular region of the sky is convolved with the instrument response and compared to the corresponding data. The user can choose between a frequentist analysis, and a Bayesian analysis. In the former, parameters of the model are optimized in order to obtain the best match to the data (i.e., the maximum of the likelihood). In the latter, the priors specified by the user are used to build the posterior distribution, which is then sampled with Markov Chain Monte Carlo or Multinest. Our implementation of this idea is very flexible, allowing the study of point sources as well as extended sources with arbitrary spectra. We will review the problem we aim to solve, the 3ML concepts and its innovative potential.

Magnetic Field Tunable Small-scale Mechanical Properties of Nickel Single Crystals Measured by Nanoindentation Technique

Nano- and micromagnetic materials have been extensively employed in micro-functional devices. However, measuring small-scale mechanical and magnetomechanical properties is challenging, which restricts the design of new products and the performance of smart devices. A new magnetomechanical nanoindentation technique is developed and tested on a nickel single crystal in the absence and presence of a saturated magnetic field. Small-scale parameters such as Young's modulus, indentation hardness, and plastic index are dependent on the applied magnetic field, which differ greatly from their macroscale counterparts. Possible mechanisms that induced 31% increase in modulus and 7% reduction in hardness (i.e., the flexomagnetic effect and the interaction between dislocations andmagnetic field, respectively) are analyzed and discussed. Results could be useful in the microminiaturization of applications, such as tunable mechanical resonators and magnetic field sensors.

Electric-field-tunable mechanical properties of relaxor ferroelectric single crystal measured by nanoindentation

Electric field dependent mechanical properties of relaxor ferroelectric material Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 are investigated with the nanoindentation technique. Giant electric-field-tunable apparent elastic modulus (up to -39%), hardness (-9% to 20%) and energy dissipation (up to -13%) are reported. Based on experimental data, a characterization method of electromechanical coupled nanoindentation is proposed. In this method, an electric field tunable scaling relationship among elastic modulus, hardness and indentation work for ferroelectric materials can be determined. In addition, this method can be used to obtain the electric-field-dependent elastic modulus and hardness, and avoid the estimate of contact area in the Oliver-Pharr method. Finally, the different effects on elastic modulus between positive and negative electric fields can be explained by the flexoelectric effect.

Multi-field nanoindentation apparatus for measuring local mechanical properties of materials in external magnetic and electric fields

Nano/micro-scale mechanical properties of multiferroic materials can be controlled by the external magnetic or electric field due to the coupling interaction. For the first time, a modularized multi-field nanoindentation apparatus for carrying out testing on materials in external magnetostatic/electrostatic field is constructed. Technical issues, such as the application of magnetic/electric field and the processes to diminish the interference between external fields and the other parts of the apparatus, are addressed. Tests on calibration specimen indicate the feasibility of the apparatus. The load-displacement curves of ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric materials in the presence/absence of external fields reveal the small-scale magnetomechanical and electromechanical coupling, showing as the Delta-E and Delta-H effects, i.e. the magnetic/electric field induced changes in the apparent elastic modulus and indentation hardness.

External uniform electric field removing flexoelectric effect in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films

Using the modified Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire thermodynamic theory, it is found that the coupling between stress gradient and polarization, or flexoelectricity, has significant effect on ferroelectric properties of epitaxial thin films, such as polarization, free energy profile and hysteresis loop. However, this effect can be completely eliminated by applying an optimized external, uniform electric field. The role of such uniform electric field is shown to be the same as that of an ideal gradient electric field which can suppress the flexoelectricty effect completely based on the present theory. Since the uniform electric field is more convenient to apply and control than gradient electric field, it can be potentially used to remove the flexoelectric effect induced by stress gradient in epitaxial thin films and enhance the ferroelectric properties.

Flexoelectricity induced increase of critical thickness in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films

Flexoelectricity describes the coupling between polarization and strain/stress gradients in insulating crystals. In this paper, using the Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire phenomenological approach, we found that flexoelectricity could increase the theoretical critical thickness in epitaxial BaTiO3 thin films, below which the switchable spontaneous polarization vanishes. This increase is remarkable in tensile films while trivial in compressive films due to the electrostriction caused decrease of potential barrier, which can be easily destroyed by the flexoelectricity, between the ferroelectric state and the paraelectric state in tensile films. In addition, the films are still in a uni-polar state even below the critical thickness due to the flexoelectric effect.
