Complete UV Resonances of SMEFT Dim-9 Operators for Short-range Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We present a systematic classification of tree-level ultraviolet (UV) completions for dimension-nine SMEFT operators relevant to short-range neutrinoless double beta decay. Using the SMEFT J-basis framework, we categorize distinct UV completions, including both all-boson and boson-fermion-boson topologies. A primary objective is the identification of minimal UV realizations, defined as the smallest set of genuine heavy degrees of freedom required to generate each operator. Out of the 505 unique mediator combinations identified, 440 are found to be minimal, with 12 cases necessitating only two distinct heavy species. While our findings reproduce the scalar- and fermion-mediated results of Ref.[1], we significantly extend the classification by providing the first comprehensive compilation of 324 minimal UV completions featuring vector resonances -- a category previously unexplored in this context.

An introduction to gauge theories and group theory in particle physics

In this review, the fundamental concepts of group theory and representation theory are introduced. Special emphasis is placed on the unitary irreducible representations of the $SU(N)$ Lie group, the Poincare group, Little Group, discrete group, and their applications in particle physics. Based on the principle of local gauge symmetry, the construction of gauge-invariant Lagrangians and their quantization procedure are discussed. To address gauge redundancy, the modern on-shell amplitude approach is applied to gauge theories, demonstrating both conceptual and computational advantages. From the perspective of symmetry, the Standard Model is presented through the identification of its gauge symmetry, its anomaly-free matter content, and its global symmetries, including flavor symmetry, custodial symmetry, and baryon and lepton number conservation, etc.

Partial-Wave Unitarity Bounds on Higher-Dimensional Operators from 2-to-$N$ Scattering

We present a systematic method for deriving partial-wave unitarity bounds on Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators in effective field theories involving more than four fields, which naturally appear in tree-level 2-to-$N$ scattering processes with $N \geq 3$. Unlike 2-to-2 scattering, 2-to-$N$ scattering with $N \geq 3$ features multiple amplitudes associated with the same total angular momentum. To resolve these degeneracies, we provide a way to construct an orthonormal amplitude basis by parameterizing the phase space manifold of massless particles using spinor-helicity variables, enabling analytical integration over the phase space with arbitrary particle numbers. We provide Mathematica code to analytically evaluate phase space integrals of interference between two local on-shell amplitudes up to four final-state particles, with straightforward generalization to $N$ final-state particles. As practical applications, we demonstrate the use of this tool by deriving unitarity bounds on some dimension-7 and dimension-8 operators in the Standard Model effective field theory involving five and six fields, respectively.

Dynamical symmetry breaking in Georgi-Glashow chiral-gauge theories

We investigate dynamical symmetry breaking in a class of chiral gauge theories containing the Georgi-Glashow model. These theories feature a gauge sector and two fermion species that transform in the two-index antisymmetric and antifundamental representations with different multiplicities. Using the effective action formalism and the functional renormalization group, we derive the flow of four-fermion interactions that encode their resonant structure and information about bound-state formation. Generalizing the theories to multiple generations, we make contact with the loss of asymptotic freedom and dissect the boundary of a conjectured conformal window. Our results show that, while most of the theory space displays a dominant color-breaking condensate, there exists a strongly coupled regime where the lowest-laying mechanisms fail and more intricate dynamics are expected to arise. This analysis provides a first step toward the infrared behavior of chiral gauge theories with functional methods.

Searching for top-philic heavy resonances in boosted four-top final states

New heavy resonances with sizeable couplings to top quarks can be probed through searches for beyond-the-Standard-Model effects in four-top production at the LHC. In this work, we present the first next-to-leading-order QCD predictions for the full on-shell and off-shell production of four-top events via new electroweak singlet states, along with dedicated analysis strategies based on the reconstruction and tagging of all final-state top quarks. We develop a detector-level simulation incorporating recent advances in top-tagging and boosted object reconstruction. Moreover, we demonstrate that searches at LHC Run 3 and high-luminosity phase in the zero-lepton, one-lepton and same-sign di-lepton channels can improve the sensitivity to the new physics cross sections by up to two orders of magnitude. In particular, colour-octet resonances with masses up to 2-2.5 TeV and colour-singlet states with masses up to 1-1.5 TeV are within reach for coupling values in the 0.1-1 range.

Boosting Beyond: A Novel Approach to Probing Top-Philic Resonances at the LHC

We introduce a novel search strategy for heavy top-philic resonances that induce new contributions to four-top production at the LHC. We capitalize on recent advances in top-tagging performance to demonstrate that the final state, that is expected to be boosted based on current limits, can be fully reconstructed and exploited. Notably, our approach promises bounds on new physics cross-sections that are a few to 60 times stronger than those obtained with existing searches, showcasing its unprecedented effectiveness in probing top-philic new physics.

Understanding the SM gauge group from SMEFT

We discuss heavy particles that can be used to pin down the faithful Standard Model (SM) gauge group and their patterns in the SM effective field theory (SMEFT). These heavy particles are not invariant under a specific $\mathbb{Z}_6$ subgroup of $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$, which however acts trivially on all the SM particles, hence the faithful SM gauge group remains undetermined. Different realizations of the faithful SM gauge group correspond to different spectra of heavy particles, and they also correspond to distinct sets of line operators with one-form global symmetry acting on them. We show that the heavy particles not invariant under the $\mathbb{Z}_6$ group cannot appear in tree-level ultraviolet completions of SMEFT, this enforces us to consider one-loop UV completions of SMEFT to identify the $\mathbb{Z}_6$ non-invariant heavy particles. We demonstrate with examples that correlations between Wilson coefficients provide an efficient way to examine models with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ non-invariant heavy particles. Finally, we prove that all the scalars that can trigger electroweak symmetry breaking must be invariant under the $\mathbb{Z}_6$ group, hence they cannot be used to probe the faithful SM gauge group.

Probing Electroweak Phase Transition in the Singlet Standard Model via $bbγγ$ and 4$l$ channels

We investigate the prospects for resonant di-Higgs and heavy Higgs production searches at the 14 TeV HL-LHC in the combination of $bbγγ$ and $4l$ channels, as a probe of a possible first order electroweak phase transition in real singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model. Event selection follows those utilized in the $bbγγ$ and $4l$ searches by the ATLAS Collaboration, applied to simulation using benchmark parameters that realize a strong first order electroweak phase transition. The output of discriminant analysis is implemented by numerical calculation, optimised by the joint restriction from the two channels. The prospective reach for $bbγγ$/$4l$ channel could be more competitive in probing the electroweak phase transition at lower/higher resonance masses. With 3 $ab^{-1}$ integrated luminosity, the combination of the $bbγγ$ and $4l$ channels can discover/exclude a significant portion of %\mrmC{isn't it more accurate to say "a significant portion of" ?} of the viable parameter space that realizes a strong first order phase transition when the resonance mass is heavier than 500 GeV.

Complete UV Resonances of the Dimension-8 SMEFT Operators

The effective field theory approach parameterizes the low energy behaviors of all possible ultraviolet (UV) theories in a systematic way. One of the most important tasks is thus to find the connection between the effective operators and their UV origins. The redundancy relations among operators make the connection very subtle, hence we proposed the j-basis prescription to illuminate the correspondence between operators and their UV resonances in the bottom-up way. In this work, we work out the dimension-8 j-basis operators in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT), and find all the 146 (82) tree-level UV resonances along with their couplings up to mass dimension 5 (4). Furthermore, we point out a few subtleties on operator generation via field redefinition and on the UV Lagrangian for generic spin resonances. We also provide a data base storing our results and a \texttt{Mathematica} notebook for extracting those results for the reader's conveinence.

On-shell Operator Construction in the Effective Field Theory of Gravity

We construct the on-shell amplitude basis and the corresponding effective operators for generic modified gravity theory, such as pure gravity with higher derivatives, scalar-tensor gravity, Einstein-Yang-Mills, etc. Taking the Weyl tensor as the building block, we utilize the Young tensor technique to obtain independent operators, without equation of motion and total derivative redundancies. We update our algorithm and vastly increase the speed for finding the monomial basis (m-basis) of effective operators expressed in terms of Weyl tensors with Lorentz indices, the familiar form for the General Relativity community. Finally, we obtain the complete and independent amplitude and operator basis for GRSMEFT and GRLEFT up to mass dimension 10.

Impact of Dimension-8 SMEFT operators on Diboson Productions

We for the first time identify all the dimension-8 (dim-8) SMEFT operators that can have an interference with the SM with $E^4/Λ^4$ enhancement in the high energy limit for the processes $q\bar{q}\to WW/WZ$. Our results therefore explicitly show that the non-interference observed for the dimension-six does not extend to dimension-eight. We compute the contributions of those dimension-8 operators to the cross-section at the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider and compare the results with dimension-6 (dim-6) originated corrections at the order of dim-6-SM interference and dim-6 squared. We find one (two) dim-8 operator(s) can generate amplitudes of a similar order of magnitude compared with their dim-6 squared counterparts assuming unity dimensionless Wilson coefficients. During the study, new non-interference scenarios are found due to the selection rule of angular momentum as well as strong suppression due to the symmetric initial state for the proton-proton collider.

Theory Techniques for Precision Physics -- Snowmass 2021 TF06 Topical Group Report

The wealth of experimental data collected at laboratory experiments suggests that there is some scale separation between the Standard Model (SM) and phenomena beyond the SM (BSM). New phenomena can manifest itself as small corrections to SM predictions, or as signals in processes where the SM predictions vanish or are exceedingly small. This makes precise calculations of the SM expectations essential, in order to maximize the sensitivity of current and forthcoming experiments to BSM physics. This topical group report highlights some past and forthcoming theory developments critical for maximizing the sensitivity of the experimental program to understanding Nature at the shortest distances.

The Bottom-Up EFT: Complete UV Resonances of the SMEFT Operators

The standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) provides systematic parameterization of all possible new physics above the electroweak scale. According to the amplitude-operator correspondence, an effective operator can be decomposed into a linear combination of several j-basis operators, which correspond to local amplitudes carrying certain spin and gauge quantum numbers in a particular scattering channel. Based on the Poincare and gauge symmetries of scattering amplitude, we construct the j-basis using the Casimir method for both the Lorentz and gauge sectors. The quantum numbers of the j-basis operators fix the quantum numbers of any intermediate state in the corresponding amplitudes, such as a UV resonance. This can be re-interpreted as the j-basis/UV correspondence, thus obtaining the j-bases in all partitions of fields for an operator amounts to finding all of its UV origins at tree level, constituting the central part of the bottom-up EFT framework. Applying the j-basis analysis to SMEFT, we obtain a complete list of possible tree-level UV origins of the effective operators at the dimension 5, 6, 7, and all the bosonic operators at the dimension 8.

Revisiting Dark Matter Freeze-in and Freeze-out through Phase-Space Distribution

We revisit dark-matter production through freeze-in and freeze-out by solving the Boltzmann equations at the level of the phase-space distribution $f(p,t)$. Using the $2\to2$ annihilation and the $1\to2$ decay processes for illustration, we compare the resulting dark-matter relic abundance with that from the number-density approach. In the transition regime between freeze-in and freeze-out, we find the difference can be quite significant, or even by orders of magnitude if the annihilation of dark-matter particles or the decaying mediator is neglected. The freeze-in production in the $2\to2$ and the $1\to 2$ processes can also result in non-thermal phase-space distributions, or even multi-modal ones with out-of-equilibrium decay, which can potentially affect structure formation at late times. We also investigate how elastic scatterings can distort such non-thermal distributions.

Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/Λ$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.

Operators For Generic Effective Field Theory at any Dimension: On-shell Amplitude Basis Construction

We describe a general procedure to construct the independent and complete operator bases for generic Lorentz invariant effective field theories, given any kind of gauge symmetry and field content, up to any mass dimension. By considering the operator as contact on-shell amplitude, the so-called amplitude operator correspondence, we provide a unified construction of the Lorentz and gauge and flavor structures by Young Tableau tensor. Several bases are constructed to emphasize different aspects: independence (y-basis and m-basis), repeated fields with flavors (p-basis), and conserved quantum numbers (j-basis). We also provide new algorithms for finding the m-basis by defining inner products for group factors and the p-basis by constructing the matrix representations of the Young symmetrizers from group generators. The on-shell amplitude basis gives us a systematic way to convert any operator into such basis, so that the conversions between any other operator bases can be easily done by linear algebra. All of these are implemented in a Mathematica package: ABC4EFT (Amplitude Basis Construction for Effective Field Theories).

Exploring SMEFT Induced Non-Standard Interactions from COHERENT to Neutrino Oscillations

We investigate the prospects of next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments DUNE, T2HK and JUNO including TAO within Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We also re-interpret COHERENT data in this framework. Considering both charged and neutral current neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSIs), we analyse dimension-6 SMEFT operators and derive lower bounds to UV scale $Λ$. The most powerful probe is obtained on ${\cal O}_{{ledq}_{1211}}$ with $Λ\gtrsim$ 450 TeV due to the electron neutrino sample in T2HK near detector. We find DUNE and JUNO to be complementary to T2HK in exploring different subsets of SMEFT operators at about 25 TeV. We conclude that near detectors play a significant role in each experiment. We also find COHERENT with CsI and LAr targets to be sensitive to new physics up to $\sim$900 GeV.

What can we learn from the total width of the Higgs boson?

As one of the key properties of the Higgs boson, the Higgs total width is sensitive to global profile of the Higgs boson couplings, and thus new physics would modify the Higgs width. We investigate the total width in various new physics models, including various scalar extension, composite Higgs models, and fraternal twin Higgs model. Typically the Higgs width is smaller than the standard model value due to mixture with other scalar if the Higgs is elementary, or curved Higgs field space for the composite Higgs. On the other hand, except the possible invisible decay mode, the enhanced Yukawa coupling in the two Higgs doublet model or the exotic fermion embeddings in the composite Higgs, could enhance the Higgs width greatly. The precision measurement of the Higgs total width at the high-luminosity LHC can be used to discriminate certain new physics models.
