The Influence of Evaporation on the Formation and Evolution of Huntsman Systems

Huntsman systems are a recently identified and rare subclass of millisecond pulsar (MSP) binaries, characterized by a detached neutron star and an evolved giant companion in relatively wide orbits. Their formation has been proposed to involve red-bump-induced detachment, whereas the influence of MSP-driven evaporation during this evolutionary stage has not yet been quantitatively assessed. We quantify the influence of MSP-driven evaporation on the formation and evolution of Huntsman systems and assess its effects on their observable properties. We performed detailed binary evolution calculations including MSP-driven evaporation over a wide range of initial binary parameters and combined them with binary population synthesis to predict the observable population of Huntsman systems. We find that Huntsman systems originate primarily from binaries undergoing Case B mass transfer and red-bump-induced detachment, with initial donor masses of $1.0-2.5\ M_\odot$ and orbital periods above the bifurcation period. Evaporation has a secondary effect, slightly modifying the orbital evolution and the duration of the detached phase, but does not significantly alter the formation parameter space or the expected population, which contains about 10 Huntsman systems. We further show that evaporation can produce systematic shifts in the white dwarf mass-orbital period relation at the low-mass end, leading to systematically wider final orbits for a given white dwarf mass.

A binary origin of ultra-long period radio pulsars

We propose a possible binary evolution model for the formation of ultra-long period pulsars (ULPPs). The model involves two key stages: first, a neutron star (NS) in wide binaries undergoes an effective spin-down phase through wind-fed accretion from its massive stellar companion; second, the supernova explosion of the companion leads to the disruption of the binary system, and produces two isolated compact stars. One of the them is the first-born, slowly rotating NSs, and our binary and spin evolution calculations show that the spin periods range from $\lesssim 0.1$ s to $\gtrsim 10^8$ s. This offers a possible formation channel for some of the long-period radio transients. We estimate that the formation rate of such systems in the Milky Way is approximately about $10^{-6}$ $\rm yr^{-1}$.

A Generalized Label Shift Perspective for Cross-Domain Gaze Estimation

Aiming to generalize the well-trained gaze estimation model to new target domains, Cross-domain Gaze Estimation (CDGE) is developed for real-world application scenarios. Existing CDGE methods typically extract the domain-invariant features to mitigate domain shift in feature space, which is proved insufficient by Generalized Label Shift (GLS) theory. In this paper, we introduce a novel GLS perspective to CDGE and modelize the cross-domain problem by label and conditional shift problem. A GLS correction framework is presented and a feasible realization is proposed, in which a importance reweighting strategy based on truncated Gaussian distribution is introduced to overcome the continuity challenges in label shift correction. To embed the reweighted source distribution to conditional invariant learning, we further derive a probability-aware estimation of conditional operator discrepancy. Extensive experiments on standard CDGE tasks with different backbone models validate the superior generalization capability across domain and applicability on various models of proposed method.

A Physics-preserved Transfer Learning Method for Differential Equations

While data-driven methods such as neural operator have achieved great success in solving differential equations (DEs), they suffer from domain shift problems caused by different learning environments (with data bias or equation changes), which can be alleviated by transfer learning (TL). However, existing TL methods adopted in DEs problems lack either generalizability in general DEs problems or physics preservation during training. In this work, we focus on a general transfer learning method that adaptively correct the domain shift and preserve physical information. Mathematically, we characterize the data domain as product distribution and the essential problems as distribution bias and operator bias. A Physics-preserved Optimal Tensor Transport (POTT) method that simultaneously admits generalizability to common DEs and physics preservation of specific problem is proposed to adapt the data-driven model to target domain utilizing the push-forward distribution induced by the POTT map. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance, generalizability and physics preservation of the proposed POTT method.

Instability in supernova fallback disks and its effect on the formation of ultra long period pulsars

Several pulsars with unusually long periods were discovered recently, comprising a potential population of ultra long period pulsars (ULPPs). The origin of their long periodicity is not well understood, but may be related to magnatars spun down by surrounding fallback disks. While there are few systematic investigations on the fallback disk-assisted evolution of magnetars, the instability in the disk has received little attention, which determines the lifetime of the disk. In this work we simulate the evolution of the magnetic field, spin period, and magnetic inclination angle of magnetars with a supernova fallback disk. We find that thermal viscous instability in the disk could significantly affect the formation of ULPPs. Our simulation results also reveal that a large fraction of ULPPs seem to be nearly aligned and orthogonal rotators. This might help place ULPPs above the death line in the pulse period - period derivative plane. However, some extra mechanisms seem to be required to account for radio emission of ULPPs.

The influence of the magnetic braking laws on the evolution of persistent and transient low-mass X-ray binaries

Swift J1858.6$-$0814 (hereafter J1858) is a transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB). There is controversy regarding its donor mass derived from observations and theoretical calculations. In this paper, we adopt seven magnetic braking (MB) prescriptions suggested in the literature and different metallicity $Z$ to simulate the evolution of the LMXB. Our results show that, employing the MB model proposed by \citet{2012ApJ...746...43R} ("rm12"), the Convection And Rotation Boosted ("carb") model \citep{2019ApJ...886L..31V}, as well as the Intermediate ("inter") and Convection-boosted ("cboost") models in \citet{2019MNRAS.483.5595V} can match (part of) the observational parameters of J1858 well. We then apply our method to other observed LMXBs and find that the "rm12" and "inter" MB laws are most promising in explaining transient LMXBs. In comparison, the simulations with the "cboost" and "carb" MB laws are more inclined to reproduce persistent LMXBs and ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs), respectively. Our results, though subject to computational and/or observational bias, show that it is challenging to find a unified MB law that applies to the NS LMXB sub-populations simultaneously, indicating our lack of understanding of the true MB law. In addition, we explore the influence of various MB laws on the magnitude of the bifurcation periods in LMXBs.

COD: Learning Conditional Invariant Representation for Domain Adaptation Regression

Aiming to generalize the label knowledge from a source domain with continuous outputs to an unlabeled target domain, Domain Adaptation Regression (DAR) is developed for complex practical learning problems. However, due to the continuity problem in regression, existing conditional distribution alignment theory and methods with discrete prior, which are proven to be effective in classification settings, are no longer applicable. In this work, focusing on the feasibility problems in DAR, we establish the sufficiency theory for the regression model, which shows the generalization error can be sufficiently dominated by the cross-domain conditional discrepancy. Further, to characterize conditional discrepancy with continuous conditioning variable, a novel Conditional Operator Discrepancy (COD) is proposed, which admits the metric property on conditional distributions via the kernel embedding theory. Finally, to minimize the discrepancy, a COD-based conditional invariant representation learning model is proposed, and the reformulation is derived to show that reasonable modifications on moment statistics can further improve the discriminability of the adaptation model. Extensive experiments on standard DAR datasets verify the validity of theoretical results and the superiority over SOTA DAR methods.

On the Interacting/Active Lifetime of Supernova Fallback Disk around Isolated Neutron Stars

The fallback disk model is widely accepted to explain long-period neutron stars (NSs) which can't be simulated by magnetic dipole radiation. However, no confirmed detection of disk was found from the newly discovered long period pulsars GLEAM-X 162759.5-523504.3, GPM J1839-10 and the known slowest isolated NSs 1E 161348-5055. This might be that the disks have either been in noninteracting/inactive state where its emission is too weak to be detected or have been disrupted. In this work, we conduct simulations to examine the lifetime of supernova fallback disks around isolated neutron stars. We assume that the disk's mass varies in a self-similar way and its interaction with the NS occurs only in interacting/active state. Our results reveal that nearly all the interacting lifetimes for the disk are shorter than 0.1 Myr while the existence lifetimes are considerably longer.

Back to the Starting Point: on the Simulation of Initial Magnetic Fields and Spin Periods of Non-accretion Pulsars

Neutron stars (NSs) play essential roles in modern astrophysics. Magnetic fields and spin periods of newborn (zero age) NSs have large impact on the further evolution of NSs, which are however poorly explored in observation due to the difficulty of finding newborn NSs. In this work, we aim to infer the magnetic fields and spin periods (Bi and Pi) of zero-age NSs from the observed properties of NS population. We select non-accretion NSs (NANSs) whose evolution is solely determined by magnetic dipole radiation. We find that both Bi and Pi can be described by log-normal distribution and the fitting sensitively depends on our parameters.

Magnetic Inclination Evolution of Accreting Neutron Stars in Intermediate/Low-Mass X-ray Binaries

The magnetic inclination angle $\chi$, namely the angle between the spin and magnetic axes of a neutron star (NS), plays a vital role in its observational characteristics. However, there are few systematic investigations on its long-term evolution, especially for accreting NSs in binary systems. Applying the model of \citet{2021MNRAS.505.1775B} and the binary evolution code \mesa{}, we simultaneously simulate the evolution of the accretion rate, spin period, magnetic field, and magnetic inclination angle of accreting NSs in intermediate/low X-ray binaries (I/LMXBs). We show that the evolution of $\chi$ depends not only on the initial parameters of the binary systems, but also on the mass transfer history and the efficiency of pulsar loss. Based on the calculated results we present the characteristic distribution of $\chi$ for various types of systems including ultracompact X-ray binaries, binary millisecond pulsars, and ultraluminous X-ray sources, and discuss their possible observational implications.

Parametric upconversion of Ince-Gaussian modes

Ince-Gaussian (IG) mode, a recently discovered type of structured Gaussian beam, corresponds to eigenfunctions of the paraxial wave equation in elliptical coordinates. This propagation-invariant mode is of significance in various domains, and in particular, its nonlinear transformation; however, there have been few relevant studies to date. In this work, we report the parametric upconversion of IG modes and associated full-field selection rule for the first time. We demonstrate that IG signals can be perfectly upconverted by a flattop-beam pump; in contrast, significant mode distortion occurred when using the most common Gaussian pump. Particular attention was given to the origin of the distortion, i.e., radial-mode degeneration induced by the sum-frequency generation excited by Gaussian pump. This proof-of-principle demonstration has great significance in relevant areas, such as high-dimension quantum frequency interfacing and upconversion imaging.

Full characterization of spin-orbit coupled photons via spatial-Stokes measurement

Characterization and analysis of spin-orbit coupled (SOC) states, as a measurement problem, play a vital role in research on the modern optics and photonics based on structured light. Here, we demonstrate determination of photonic SOC states via spatial-Stokes measurement, in which two spatial complex probability amplitudes of spin-dependent spatial modes within SOC states and their relative (intramode) phase can be measured directly. Compared with the standard quantum-state tomography, by avoiding wavefront-flattening operations, the apparatus can completely record photons' realistic SOC structure, leading to a more accurate and precise determination of wavefunction. This simple and general approach for SOC state determination can provide a powerful toolkit for in-situ measuring photonic SOC state, characterizing the quality of SOC light source and associated geometric-phase devices.
