Floquet polaritons in optically driven materials

Polaritons are coupled collective modes of light and matter in quantum materials. In modern pump-probe experiments, a pump light pulse may dramatically alter the properties of the polaritons, rendering them Floquet polaritons that can be detected by a probe pulse. We present a practical framework to describe Floquet polaritons in terms of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the material. The central quantity that yields the spectra of Floquet polaritons is an effective linear optical susceptibility contributed by the pump through nonlinear optical susceptibilities. We apply this method to graphene and show that via its third-order optical nonlinearity, infrared pump leads to Floquet plasmon bands. Notably, near plasmonic band crossings, parametric instability leads to flat bands with unstable modes and exceptional points that closely resemble those of non-Hermitian systems. As a second example, we show that in hexagonal boron nitride pumped by mid-infrared laser, the pump induces Floquet phonon polariton bands via phononic nonlinearity, which can be detected with either far-field or near-field optical technique. Finally, in layered superconductors pumped by THz light polarized along the out-of-plane direction, the Josephson-type optical nonlinearity leads to Floquet Josephson plasmons, which manifest as new peaks in the THz reflectivity of a probe pulse.

Domain Wall Sliding-induced Polarization Switching in Multilayer Graphene

Electric polarization and metallicity are long believed not to coexist until the emergence of exceptionally rare material examples including the bulk polar metals and more recently two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials such as 1T' WTe2. The electric polarization for the latter represents a new and distinguishable paradigm in materials science and physics because its electric polarization states embedded in the conduction electron sea are able to couple with (and controlled by) the external electric field. However, the microscopic polarization switching process and mechanism in these 2D vdW metallic materials have not been experimentally observed and remain elusive. Here, we report the first direct experimental imaging of the microscopic mechanism behind electric-field-coupled polarization switching in a metallic system. Our gate-tunable nanoscale optical imaging identifies the robust coexistence of electric polarization and appreciable carrier densities in adjacent polar domains hosting opposite electric polarizations in a 2D elemental metallic material, tetralayer graphene. We directly visualize and verify that the sliding domain wall (DW) solitons confined at the middlemost interface are responsible for the polarization switching in tetralayer graphene upon the application of electric fields and mechanical forces. Our work provides the first direct visualization of domain wall sliding-induced polarization switching in 2D elemental carbon at room temperature, significantly expanding and advancing the research of "ferroelectric metal" initially dubbed by P. W. Anderson and coauthors in 1965.

Large-area, freestanding single-crystal gold of single nanometer thickness

Two-dimensional single-crystal metals are highly sought after for next-generation technologies. Here, we report large-area (>10^4 μm2), single-crystal two-dimensional gold with thicknesses down to a single-nanometer level, employing an atomic-level-precision chemical etching approach. The ultrathin thickness and single-crystal quality endow two-dimensional gold with unique properties including significantly quantum-confinement-augmented optical nonlinearity, low sheet resistance, high transparency and excellent mechanical flexibility. By patterning the two-dimensional gold into nanoribbon arrays, extremely-confined near-infrared plasmonic resonances are further demonstrated with quality factors up to 5. The freestanding nature of two-dimensional gold allows its straightforward manipulation and transfer-printing for integration with other structures. The developed two-dimensional gold provides an emerging platform for fundamental studies in various disciplines and opens up new opportunities for applications in high-performance ultrathin optoelectronic, photonic and quantum devices.

Electrical Tuning of Surface Plasmon Polariton Propagation in Graphene-Nanowire Hybrid Structure

We demonstrate a dynamic surface plasmonic modulation of graphene-nanowire hybrid structures in visible light range, which was thought to be a tough task for graphene based field effect transistor modulator previously. Static modulation depth of as high as 0.07 dB/μm has been achieved experimentally. Carefully simulation indicates the strongly focused electromagnetic field and dramatically enhanced electric field at the interface between a silver NW and a graphene sheet are key roles for bringing the optical response of the device to the visible range. Furthermore, the modulation behaviors near the Dirac point of monolayer graphene and the singularity of gap-induced bilayer graphene are investigated.
