BlazeEdit: Generalist Image Editing on Mobile Devices with Image-to-Image Diffusion Models

The remarkable generation quality of modern diffusion models often comes at the cost of massive parameter counts, which necessitate server-side inference with significant computational costs and potential privacy risks. Consequently, there is growing momentum toward developing efficient on-device alternatives. While recent efforts have optimized text-to-image models for mobile hardware, they remain relatively bulky, typically ranging from 0.5B to 1B parameters. We present BlazeEdit, a highly efficient, generalist image-to-image diffusion model tailored for on-device deployment. By identifying that many practical image editing tasks do not require text-based guidance, we eliminate the text-conditioning components and develop a multi-task architecture that consolidates object removal, outpainting, tone correction, relighting, and sticker generation into a single, compact model of only 195M parameters. BlazeEdit achieves a substantial reduction in download size and memory overhead while maintaining competitive generation quality. It completes a full inference pass in just 290ms on a Pixel 10, delivering a seamless, privacy-preserving, and lightning-fast experience for generalist image editing on the edge.

Inference-Time Scaling for Diffusion Models beyond Scaling Denoising Steps

Generative models have made significant impacts across various domains, largely due to their ability to scale during training by increasing data, computational resources, and model size, a phenomenon characterized by the scaling laws. Recent research has begun to explore inference-time scaling behavior in Large Language Models (LLMs), revealing how performance can further improve with additional computation during inference. Unlike LLMs, diffusion models inherently possess the flexibility to adjust inference-time computation via the number of denoising steps, although the performance gains typically flatten after a few dozen. In this work, we explore the inference-time scaling behavior of diffusion models beyond increasing denoising steps and investigate how the generation performance can further improve with increased computation. Specifically, we consider a search problem aimed at identifying better noises for the diffusion sampling process. We structure the design space along two axes: the verifiers used to provide feedback, and the algorithms used to find better noise candidates. Through extensive experiments on class-conditioned and text-conditioned image generation benchmarks, our findings reveal that increasing inference-time compute leads to substantial improvements in the quality of samples generated by diffusion models, and with the complicated nature of images, combinations of the components in the framework can be specifically chosen to conform with different application scenario.

MobileDiffusion: Instant Text-to-Image Generation on Mobile Devices

The deployment of large-scale text-to-image diffusion models on mobile devices is impeded by their substantial model size and slow inference speed. In this paper, we propose \textbf{MobileDiffusion}, a highly efficient text-to-image diffusion model obtained through extensive optimizations in both architecture and sampling techniques. We conduct a comprehensive examination of model architecture design to reduce redundancy, enhance computational efficiency, and minimize model's parameter count, while preserving image generation quality. Additionally, we employ distillation and diffusion-GAN finetuning techniques on MobileDiffusion to achieve 8-step and 1-step inference respectively. Empirical studies, conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed techniques. MobileDiffusion achieves a remarkable \textbf{sub-second} inference speed for generating a $512\times512$ image on mobile devices, establishing a new state of the art.

Investigation of the deposition of $α$-tantalum (110) films on a-plane sapphire substrate by molecular beam epitaxy for superconducting circuit

Polycrystalline α-tantalum (110) films deposited on c-plane sapphire substrate by sputtering are used in superconducting qubits nowadays. However, these films always occasionally form other structures, such as α-tantalum (111) grains and \b{eta}-tantalum grains. To improve the film quality, we investigate the growth of α-tantalum (110) films on a-plane sapphire substrate under varying conditions by molecular beam epitaxy technology. The optimized α-tantalum (110) film is single crystal, with a smooth surface and atomically flat metal-substrate interface. The film with thickness of 30 nm shows a Tc of 4.12K and a high residual resistance ratio of 9.53. The quarter wavelength coplanar waveguide resonators fabricated with the 150 nm optimized α-tantalum (110) film, exhibits intrinsic quality factor of over one million under single photon excitation at millikelvin temperature.

Semi-Supervised Learning with Meta-Gradient

In this work, we propose a simple yet effective meta-learning algorithm in semi-supervised learning. We notice that most existing consistency-based approaches suffer from overfitting and limited model generalization ability, especially when training with only a small number of labeled data. To alleviate this issue, we propose a learn-to-generalize regularization term by utilizing the label information and optimize the problem in a meta-learning fashion. Specifically, we seek the pseudo labels of the unlabeled data so that the model can generalize well on the labeled data, which is formulated as a nested optimization problem. We address this problem using the meta-gradient that bridges between the pseudo label and the regularization term. In addition, we introduce a simple first-order approximation to avoid computing higher-order derivatives and provide theoretic convergence analysis. Extensive evaluations on the SVHN, CIFAR, and ImageNet datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods.
