Correlated parity violation in gravity and electromagnetism from five-dimensional spacetime

Parity violation in the gravitational and electromagnetic sectors has been extensively investigated, yet the two are conventionally treated as independent phenomena. This separation, however, may be a four-dimensional prejudice. In higher-dimensional spacetime, gravity and electromagnetism may share a common geometric origin---and so, perhaps, does their parity violation. In this paper, we pursue this idea by constructing parity-violating Kaluza-Klein models in both Riemannian and teleparallel geometries. In Riemannian geometry, the simplest five-dimensional parity-violating term reduces to several complicated four-dimensional terms, including the familiar gravitational Chern-Simons term, which suffers from a ghost instability. In teleparallel geometry, however, the result is strikingly simple. The simplest five-dimensional parity-violating term reduces to only two ghost-free terms---the familiar Nieh-Yan term and the standard electromagnetic Chern-Simons term. Remarkably, the model predicts that the helicity-dependent dispersion shift for electromagnetic waves is exactly six times that for gravitational waves, $\Delta\omega^{2}_{ EM}=6\,\Delta\omega^{2}_{GW}$, a background-independent relation. This relation offers a falsifiable test of unification through joint cosmic microwave background and gravitational wave birefringence observations.

Elko as an inflaton candidate

Elko is a spin-half fermion with a two-fold Wigner degeneracy and Klein-Gordon dynamics. In this paper, we show that in a spatially flat FLRW space-time, slow-roll inflation can be initiated by the homogeneous Elko fields. The inflaton is a composite scalar field obtained by contracting the spinor field with its dual. This is possible because the background evolution as described by the Friedmann equation is completely determined by the scalar field. This approach has the advantage that we do not need to specify the initial conditions for every component of the spinor fields. We derive the equation of motion for the inflaton and also show that this solution is an attractor. Finally, we examine the slow-roll parameters and the power-spectrum, showing that obtaining a behavior in agreement with observational requirements is hard to be obtained, unless one uses more complicated potentials, which may act a limitation of Elko inflation.

Mass dimension one fermions in FLRW space-time

Cosmelkology is the study of Elko in cosmology. Elko is a massive spin-half field of mass dimension one. Elko differs from the Dirac and Majorana fermions because it furnishes the irreducible representation of the extended Poincare group with a two-fold Wigner degeneracy where the particle and anti-particle states both have four degrees of freedom. Elko has a renormalizable quartic self interaction which makes it a candidate for self-interacting dark matter. We study Elko in the spatially flat FLRW space-time and find exact solutions in the de Sitter space. By choosing the appropriate solutions and phases, the fields satisfy the canonical anti-commutation relations and have the correct time evolutions in the flat space limit.

Thermodynamic of the $f(Q)$ universe

We investigate thermodynamics of apparent horizon in the $f(Q)$ universe with trivial and nontrivial connections. We first explore the perspectives of the first law, generalized second law and $P-V$ phase transition with trivial connection. We show that the lowest-order correction of entropy has the same form as that in loop quantum gravity, and the critical exponents of the phase transition caused by the lowest-order correction are consistent with those in mean field theory. We then examine the thermodynamic implication of nontrivial connections. We find that nontrivial connections in the $f(Q)$ universe imply non-equilibrium states from the perspective of thermodynamics.

Gravitational wave in symmetric teleparallel gravity with different connections

We investigate the cosmological perturbations around all three branches of spatially flat universe with different connections in symmetric teleparallel gravity. The model we consider can cover both the case of f(Q) model and that of the non-minimal coupling between a scalar field and the non-metricity scalar. We focus on analyzing and comparing the propagation behavior and stability of the tensorial and non-tensorial gravitational waves on spatially flat universe with different connections.

Parity violating scalar-tensor model in teleparallel gravity and its cosmological application

The parity violating model based on teleparallel gravity is a competitive scheme for parity violating gravity, which has been preliminary studied in the literature. To further investigate the parity violating model in teleparallel gravity, in this paper, we construct all independent parity-odd terms that are quadratic in torsion tensor and coupled to a scalar field in a way without higher-order derivatives. Using these parity-odd terms, we formulate a general parity violating scalar-tensor model in teleparallel gravity and obtain its equations of motion. To explore potentially viable models within the general model, we investigate the cosmological application of a submodel of the general model in which terms above the second power of torsion are eliminated. We focus on analyzing cosmological perturbations and identify the conditions that preserve the parity violating signal of gravitational waves at linear order while avoiding the ghost instability.

Irregular universe in the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity

The Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity is a model which modifies the general relativity equivalent teleparallel gravity by a coupling between the Nieh-Yan density and an axion-like field. This model predicts parity violations in the gravitational waves if the axion-like field has a non-trivial background, and more importantly it is ghost free and avoids the pathologies presented in other parity-violating gravity models. The cosmological dynamics and perturbations of the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity have been investigated in detail, but all these previous investigations rely on the symmetry requirement that in the background universe both the metric and affine connection are homogeneous and isotropic. In this paper we relax the symmetry constraint on the connection and leave it arbitrary at the beginning, after all the cosmological principle only needs the metric of the background spacetime to meet the symmetry requirement. We find a new flat universe solution for the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity, for which the background dynamics itself is unchanged but the perturbations around it present a new feature that the scalar and tensor perturbations are coupled together at the linear level. The implications of this peculiar feature in primordial perturbations from inflation are also discussed.

Extensions of two-field mimetic gravity

Two-field mimetic gravity was recently realized by looking at the singular limit of the conformal transformation between the auxiliary metric and the physical metric with two scalar fields involved. In this paper, we reanalyze the singular conformal limit and find a more general solution for the conformal factor A, which greatly broadens the form of two-field mimetic constraint and thus extends the two-field mimetic gravity. We find the general setup still mimics the roles of dark matter at the cosmological background level. Moreover, we extend the action by introducing extra possible term for phenomenological interests. Surprisingly, some special cases are found to be equivalent to general relativity, k-essence theory and Galileon theory. Finally, we further extend the theory by allowing the expression of mimetic constraint to be arbitrary without imposed condition, and show that the dark matter-like behavior is unaffected even in this extension.

Ghost instability in the teleparallel gravity model with parity violations

In this paper we consider the parity violating gravity model within the framework of teleparallel gravity. The parity violations are caused by the couplings of a scalar field to the scalar invariants which are parity-odd and quadratic in the torsion tensor. Totally there are two such type independent invariants, and one of them is the Nieh-Yan density. Through investigations on the cosmological perturbations of this model, we find that in general it suffers from the difficulties of ghost instability in the scalar and vector perturbations. But in the special case only the coupling to the Nieh-Yan density exists, this model is ghost free and reduces to the Nieh-Yan modified Teleparallel Gravity model. We also analyze the severity of the ghost instability by studying the perturbations around the Minkowski background.

Parametrized post-Newtonian limit of the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity

The recently proposed Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity is a parity-violating gravity model that modifies the general relativity equivalent teleparallel gravity by a Nieh-Yan term. This model is healthy and simple in form. In this paper, we consider the application of this model to the Solar System and investigate its slow-motion and weak-field approximation in terms of the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism. We find that all the post-Newtonian parameters of the model are the same as those of general relativity, which makes the model compatible with the Solar System experiments.

Revisiting a parity violating gravity model without ghost instability: Local Lorentz covariance

Recently, based on the theory of teleparallel gravity, a simple and ghost free parity violating gravity model was proposed in [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023], where the Weitzenböck connection was adopted for simplifying the calculations but breaks the local Lorentz symmetry explicitly. In this paper, we restore the local Lorentz symmetry of this model by giving up the Weitzenböck condition on the spin connection. With full local Lorentz covariance, this model is not a pure tetrad theory any more. We also apply the new version of this model to the universe with general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. This further generalizes the studies of [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023] where only the spatially flat background was considered. Through the investigations of this paper, we confirm the results obtained in [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023] and in addition get some new results.

Gravitational leptogenesis in teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel gravities

In this paper, we consider the possibilities of generating baryon number asymmetry in thermal equilibrium within the frameworks of teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel gravities. Through the derivative couplings of the torsion scalar or the non-metricity scalar to baryons, the baryon number asymmetry is indeed produced in the radiation dominated epoch. For gravitational baryogenesis mechanisms in these two frameworks, the produced baryon-to-entropy ratio is too small to be consistent with observations. But the gravitational leptogenesis models within both frameworks have the possibilities to interpret the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry.

A simple parity violating gravity model without ghost instability

In this paper we consider a parity violating gravity model without higher derivatives, thus ghost free. This model is constructed from the tetrad and its derivatives and coupled to a dynamical scalar field, like axion. It can be reduced from the Nieh-Yan term within the framework of teleparallel gravity. We apply this model to cosmology and investigate its consequences on cosmological perturbation theory. We find that the coupled dynamical scalar field lost its independent dynamics at the linear order and the parity violating term itself behaves like a viscosity. For gravitational waves, this model produces velocity difference between left- and right-handed polarizations, but generates no amplitude discrepancy.

Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity with Varying Cosmological Constant

In this paper we modify the EiBI model to realize a varying cosmological constant which is determined by matter distribution. We find that the Newton's constant is also variable and its change is related to the change of cosmological constant. And then we study its cosmological behavior. We find that the early universe will have different behaviors if we take different forms of pending functions. And we can avoid singularity in early universe just like the original EiBI model.

Conformal invariant cosmological perturbations via the covariant approach: multicomponent universe

In recent years there has been a lot of interest in discussing frame dependences/independences of the cosmological perturbations under the conformal transformations. This problem has previously been investigated in terms of the covariant approach for a single component universe, and it was found that the covariant approach is very powerful to pick out the perturbative variables which are both gauge and conformal invariant. In this work, we extend the covariant approach to a universe with multicomponent fluids. We find that similar results can be derived, as expected. In addition, some other interesting perturbations are also identified to be conformal invariant, such as entropy perturbation between two different components.
