Piecing It All Together: Verifying Multi-Hop Multimodal Claims

Existing claim verification datasets often do not require systems to perform complex reasoning or effectively interpret multimodal evidence. To address this, we introduce a new task: multi-hop multimodal claim verification. This task challenges models to reason over multiple pieces of evidence from diverse sources, including text, images, and tables, and determine whether the combined multimodal evidence supports or refutes a given claim. To study this task, we construct MMCV, a large-scale dataset comprising 15k multi-hop claims paired with multimodal evidence, generated and refined using large language models, with additional input from human feedback. We show that MMCV is challenging even for the latest state-of-the-art multimodal large language models, especially as the number of reasoning hops increases. Additionally, we establish a human performance benchmark on a subset of MMCV. We hope this dataset and its evaluation task will encourage future research in multimodal multi-hop claim verification.

MV-Adapter: Multi-view Consistent Image Generation Made Easy

Existing multi-view image generation methods often make invasive modifications to pre-trained text-to-image (T2I) models and require full fine-tuning, leading to (1) high computational costs, especially with large base models and high-resolution images, and (2) degradation in image quality due to optimization difficulties and scarce high-quality 3D data. In this paper, we propose the first adapter-based solution for multi-view image generation, and introduce MV-Adapter, a versatile plug-and-play adapter that enhances T2I models and their derivatives without altering the original network structure or feature space. By updating fewer parameters, MV-Adapter enables efficient training and preserves the prior knowledge embedded in pre-trained models, mitigating overfitting risks. To efficiently model the 3D geometric knowledge within the adapter, we introduce innovative designs that include duplicated self-attention layers and parallel attention architecture, enabling the adapter to inherit the powerful priors of the pre-trained models to model the novel 3D knowledge. Moreover, we present a unified condition encoder that seamlessly integrates camera parameters and geometric information, facilitating applications such as text- and image-based 3D generation and texturing. MV-Adapter achieves multi-view generation at 768 resolution on Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL), and demonstrates adaptability and versatility. It can also be extended to arbitrary view generation, enabling broader applications. We demonstrate that MV-Adapter sets a new quality standard for multi-view image generation, and opens up new possibilities due to its efficiency, adaptability and versatility.

Gated Parametric Neuron for Spike-based Audio Recognition

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) aim to simulate real neural networks in the human brain with biologically plausible neurons. The leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron is one of the most widely studied SNN architectures. However, it has the vanishing gradient problem when trained with backpropagation. Additionally, its neuronal parameters are often manually specified and fixed, in contrast to the heterogeneity of real neurons in the human brain. This paper proposes a gated parametric neuron (GPN) to process spatio-temporal information effectively with the gating mechanism. Compared with the LIF neuron, the GPN has two distinguishing advantages: 1) it copes well with the vanishing gradients by improving the flow of gradient propagation; and, 2) it learns spatio-temporal heterogeneous neuronal parameters automatically. Additionally, we use the same gate structure to eliminate initial neuronal parameter selection and design a hybrid recurrent neural network-SNN structure. Experiments on two spike-based audio datasets demonstrated that the GPN network outperformed several state-of-the-art SNNs, could mitigate vanishing gradients, and had spatio-temporal heterogeneous parameters. Our work shows the ability of SNNs to handle long-term dependencies and achieve high performance simultaneously.

VIP: Versatile Image Outpainting Empowered by Multimodal Large Language Model

In this paper, we focus on resolving the problem of image outpainting, which aims to extrapolate the surrounding parts given the center contents of an image. Although recent works have achieved promising performance, the lack of versatility and customization hinders their practical applications in broader scenarios. Therefore, this work presents a novel image outpainting framework that is capable of customizing the results according to the requirement of users. First of all, we take advantage of a Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) that automatically extracts and organizes the corresponding textual descriptions of the masked and unmasked part of a given image. Accordingly, the obtained text prompts are introduced to endow our model with the capacity to customize the outpainting results. In addition, a special Cross-Attention module, namely Center-Total-Surrounding (CTS), is elaborately designed to enhance further the the interaction between specific space regions of the image and corresponding parts of the text prompts. Note that unlike most existing methods, our approach is very resource-efficient since it is just slightly fine-tuned on the off-the-shelf stable diffusion (SD) model rather than being trained from scratch. Finally, the experimental results on three commonly used datasets, i.e. Scenery, Building, and WikiArt, demonstrate our model significantly surpasses the SoTA methods. Moreover, versatile outpainting results are listed to show its customized ability.

Boosting 3D Object Generation through PBR Materials

Automatic 3D content creation has gained increasing attention recently, due to its potential in various applications such as video games, film industry, and AR/VR. Recent advancements in diffusion models and multimodal models have notably improved the quality and efficiency of 3D object generation given a single RGB image. However, 3D objects generated even by state-of-the-art methods are still unsatisfactory compared to human-created assets. Considering only textures instead of materials makes these methods encounter challenges in photo-realistic rendering, relighting, and flexible appearance editing. And they also suffer from severe misalignment between geometry and high-frequency texture details. In this work, we propose a novel approach to boost the quality of generated 3D objects from the perspective of Physics-Based Rendering (PBR) materials. By analyzing the components of PBR materials, we choose to consider albedo, roughness, metalness, and bump maps. For albedo and bump maps, we leverage Stable Diffusion fine-tuned on synthetic data to extract these values, with novel usages of these fine-tuned models to obtain 3D consistent albedo UV and bump UV for generated objects. In terms of roughness and metalness maps, we adopt a semi-automatic process to provide room for interactive adjustment, which we believe is more practical. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model is generally beneficial for various state-of-the-art generation methods, significantly boosting the quality and realism of their generated 3D objects, with natural relighting effects and substantially improved geometry.

UNSCT-HRNet: Modeling Anatomical Uncertainty for Landmark Detection in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) relies on accurate landmark detection from radiographic images, but unstructured data caused by irregular patient postures or occluded anatomical markers pose significant challenges for existing methods. To address this, we propose UNSCT-HRNet (Unstructured CT - High-Resolution Net), a deep learning-based framework that integrates a Spatial Relationship Fusion (SRF) module and an Uncertainty Estimation (UE) module. The SRF module, utilizing coordinate convolution and polarized attention, enhances the model's ability to capture complex spatial relationships. Meanwhile, the UE module which based on entropy ensures predictions are anatomically relevant. For unstructured data, the proposed method can predict landmarks without relying on the fixed number of points, which shows higher accuracy and better robustness comparing with the existing methods. Our UNSCT-HRNet demonstrates over a 60% improvement across multiple metrics in unstructured data. The experimental results also reveal that our approach maintains good performance on the structured dataset. Overall, the proposed UNSCT-HRNet has the potential to be used as a new reliable, automated solution for THA surgical planning and postoperative monitoring.

D2SP: Dynamic Dual-Stage Purification Framework for Dual Noise Mitigation in Vision-based Affective Recognition

The contemporary state-of-the-art of Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition (DFER) technology facilitates remarkable progress by deriving emotional mappings of facial expressions from video content, underpinned by training on voluminous datasets. Yet, the DFER datasets encompass a substantial volume of noise data. Noise arises from low-quality captures that defy logical labeling, and instances that suffer from mislabeling due to annotation bias, engendering two principal types of uncertainty: the uncertainty regarding data usability and the uncertainty concerning label reliability. Addressing the two types of uncertainty, we have meticulously crafted a two-stage framework aiming at \textbf{S}eeking \textbf{C}ertain data \textbf{I}n extensive \textbf{U}ncertain data (SCIU). This initiative aims to purge the DFER datasets of these uncertainties, thereby ensuring that only clean, verified data is employed in training processes. To mitigate the issue of low-quality samples, we introduce the Coarse-Grained Pruning (CGP) stage, which assesses sample weights and prunes those deemed unusable due to their low weight. For samples with incorrect annotations, the Fine-Grained Correction (FGC) stage evaluates prediction stability to rectify mislabeled data. Moreover, SCIU is conceived as a universally compatible, plug-and-play framework, tailored to integrate seamlessly with prevailing DFER methodologies. Rigorous experiments across prevalent DFER datasets and against numerous benchmark methods substantiates SCIU's capacity to markedly elevate performance metrics.

Space Domain based Ecological Cooperative and Adaptive Cruise Control on Rolling Terrain

Cooperative and Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is widely focused to enhance driving fuel-efficiency by maintaining a close following gap. The ecology of CACC could be further enhanced by adapting to the rolling terrain. However, current studies cannot ensure both planning optimality and computational efficiency. Firstly, current studies are mostly formulated on the conventional time domain. These time domain based methods cannot ensure planning optimality for space-varying road slopes. Secondly, fuel consumption models are non-linear and hard to solve efficiently. Hence, this paper proposes a space domain based Ecological-CACC (Eco-CACC) controller. It is formulated into a nonlinear optimal control problem with the objective of optimizing global fuel consumptions. Furthermore, a differential dynamic programming-based solving method is developed to ensure real-time computational efficiency. Simulation results have shown that the proposed Eco-CACC controller can improve average fuel saving by 37.67% at collector road and about 17.30% at major arterial. String stability of the proposed method has been theoretically proven and experimentally validated.

Ubiquitous Field Transportation Robots with Robust Wheel-Leg Transformable Modules

This paper introduces two field transportation robots. Both robots are equipped with transformable wheel-leg modules, which can smoothly switch between operation modes and can work in various challenging terrains. SWhegPro, with six S-shaped legs, enables transporting loads in challenging uneven outdoor terrains. SWhegPro3, featuring four three-impeller wheels, has surprising stair-climbing performance in indoor scenarios. Different from ordinary gear-driven transformable mechanisms, the modular wheels we designed driven by self-locking electric push rods can switch modes accurately and stably with high loads, significantly improving the load capacity of the robot in leg mode. This study analyzes the robot's wheel-leg module operation when the terrain parameters change. Through the derivation of mathematical models and calculations based on simplified kinematic models, a method for optimizing the robot parameters and wheel-leg structure parameters is finally proposed. The design and control strategy are then verified through simulations and field experiments in various complex terrains, and the working performance of the two field transportation robots is calculated and analyzed by recording sensor data and proposing evaluation methods.

The Factuality Tax of Diversity-Intervened Text-to-Image Generation: Benchmark and Fact-Augmented Intervention

Prompt-based "diversity interventions" are commonly adopted to improve the diversity of Text-to-Image (T2I) models depicting individuals with various racial or gender traits. However, will this strategy result in nonfactual demographic distribution, especially when generating real historical figures. In this work, we propose DemOgraphic FActualIty Representation (DoFaiR), a benchmark to systematically quantify the trade-off between using diversity interventions and preserving demographic factuality in T2I models. DoFaiR consists of 756 meticulously fact-checked test instances to reveal the factuality tax of various diversity prompts through an automated evidence-supported evaluation pipeline. Experiments on DoFaiR unveil that diversity-oriented instructions increase the number of different gender and racial groups in DALLE-3's generations at the cost of historically inaccurate demographic distributions. To resolve this issue, we propose Fact-Augmented Intervention (FAI), which instructs a Large Language Model (LLM) to reflect on verbalized or retrieved factual information about gender and racial compositions of generation subjects in history, and incorporate it into the generation context of T2I models. By orienting model generations using the reflected historical truths, FAI significantly improves the demographic factuality under diversity interventions while preserving diversity.

TrustLLM: Trustworthiness in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs), exemplified by ChatGPT, have gained considerable attention for their excellent natural language processing capabilities. Nonetheless, these LLMs present many challenges, particularly in the realm of trustworthiness. Therefore, ensuring the trustworthiness of LLMs emerges as an important topic. This paper introduces TrustLLM, a comprehensive study of trustworthiness in LLMs, including principles for different dimensions of trustworthiness, established benchmark, evaluation, and analysis of trustworthiness for mainstream LLMs, and discussion of open challenges and future directions. Specifically, we first propose a set of principles for trustworthy LLMs that span eight different dimensions. Based on these principles, we further establish a benchmark across six dimensions including truthfulness, safety, fairness, robustness, privacy, and machine ethics. We then present a study evaluating 16 mainstream LLMs in TrustLLM, consisting of over 30 datasets. Our findings firstly show that in general trustworthiness and utility (i.e., functional effectiveness) are positively related. Secondly, our observations reveal that proprietary LLMs generally outperform most open-source counterparts in terms of trustworthiness, raising concerns about the potential risks of widely accessible open-source LLMs. However, a few open-source LLMs come very close to proprietary ones. Thirdly, it is important to note that some LLMs may be overly calibrated towards exhibiting trustworthiness, to the extent that they compromise their utility by mistakenly treating benign prompts as harmful and consequently not responding. Finally, we emphasize the importance of ensuring transparency not only in the models themselves but also in the technologies that underpin trustworthiness. Knowing the specific trustworthy technologies that have been employed is crucial for analyzing their effectiveness.

Unified Gradient-Based Machine Unlearning with Remain Geometry Enhancement

Machine unlearning (MU) has emerged to enhance the privacy and trustworthiness of deep neural networks. Approximate MU is a practical method for large-scale models. Our investigation into approximate MU starts with identifying the steepest descent direction, minimizing the output Kullback-Leibler divergence to exact MU inside a parameters' neighborhood. This probed direction decomposes into three components: weighted forgetting gradient ascent, fine-tuning retaining gradient descent, and a weight saliency matrix. Such decomposition derived from Euclidean metric encompasses most existing gradient-based MU methods. Nevertheless, adhering to Euclidean space may result in sub-optimal iterative trajectories due to the overlooked geometric structure of the output probability space. We suggest embedding the unlearning update into a manifold rendered by the remaining geometry, incorporating second-order Hessian from the remaining data. It helps prevent effective unlearning from interfering with the retained performance. However, computing the second-order Hessian for large-scale models is intractable. To efficiently leverage the benefits of Hessian modulation, we propose a fast-slow parameter update strategy to implicitly approximate the up-to-date salient unlearning direction. Free from specific modal constraints, our approach is adaptable across computer vision unlearning tasks, including classification and generation. Extensive experiments validate our efficacy and efficiency. Notably, our method successfully performs class-forgetting on ImageNet using DiT and forgets a class on CIFAR-10 using DDPM in just 50 steps, compared to thousands of steps required by previous methods.

Trojan Activation Attack: Red-Teaming Large Language Models using Activation Steering for Safety-Alignment

To ensure AI safety, instruction-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) are specifically trained to ensure alignment, which refers to making models behave in accordance with human intentions. While these models have demonstrated commendable results on various safety benchmarks, the vulnerability of their safety alignment has not been extensively studied. This is particularly troubling given the potential harm that LLMs can inflict. Existing attack methods on LLMs often rely on poisoned training data or the injection of malicious prompts. These approaches compromise the stealthiness and generalizability of the attacks, making them susceptible to detection. Additionally, these models often demand substantial computational resources for implementation, making them less practical for real-world applications. In this work, we study a different attack scenario, called Trojan Activation Attack (TA^2), which injects trojan steering vectors into the activation layers of LLMs. These malicious steering vectors can be triggered at inference time to steer the models toward attacker-desired behaviors by manipulating their activations. Our experiment results on four primary alignment tasks show that TA^2 is highly effective and adds little or no overhead to attack efficiency. Additionally, we discuss potential countermeasures against such activation attacks.

All rivers run into the sea: Unified Modality Brain-like Emotional Central Mechanism

In the field of affective computing, fully leveraging information from a variety of sensory modalities is essential for the comprehensive understanding and processing of human emotions. Inspired by the process through which the human brain handles emotions and the theory of cross-modal plasticity, we propose UMBEnet, a brain-like unified modal affective processing network. The primary design of UMBEnet includes a Dual-Stream (DS) structure that fuses inherent prompts with a Prompt Pool and a Sparse Feature Fusion (SFF) module. The design of the Prompt Pool is aimed at integrating information from different modalities, while inherent prompts are intended to enhance the system's predictive guidance capabilities and effectively manage knowledge related to emotion classification. Moreover, considering the sparsity of effective information across different modalities, the SSF module aims to make full use of all available sensory data through the sparse integration of modality fusion prompts and inherent prompts, maintaining high adaptability and sensitivity to complex emotional states. Extensive experiments on the largest benchmark datasets in the Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition (DFER) field, including DFEW, FERV39k, and MAFW, have proven that UMBEnet consistently outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods. Notably, in scenarios of Modality Missingness and multimodal contexts, UMBEnet significantly surpasses the leading current methods, demonstrating outstanding performance and adaptability in tasks that involve complex emotional understanding with rich multimodal information.

Non-Robust Features are Not Always Useful in One-Class Classification

The robustness of machine learning models has been questioned by the existence of adversarial examples. We examine the threat of adversarial examples in practical applications that require lightweight models for one-class classification. Building on Ilyas et al. (2019), we investigate the vulnerability of lightweight one-class classifiers to adversarial attacks and possible reasons for it. Our results show that lightweight one-class classifiers learn features that are not robust (e.g. texture) under stronger attacks. However, unlike in multi-class classification (Ilyas et al., 2019), these non-robust features are not always useful for the one-class task, suggesting that learning these unpredictive and non-robust features is an unwanted consequence of training.

Tele-Correlation: Calibrating Shear-Shear Correlation with Real Data

Tele-correlation refers to the correlation of galaxy shapes with large angular separations (e.g., $>100$ degrees). Since there are no astrophysical reasons causing such a correlation on cosmological scales, any detected tele-correlation could disclose systematic effects in shear-shear correlation measurement. If the shear estimators are measured on single exposures, we show that the field distortion (FD) signal associated with the galaxy position on the CCD can be retained and used in tele-correlation to help us directly calibrate the multiplicative and additive biases in shear-shear correlations. We use the DECaLS shear catalog produced by the Fourier\_Quad pipeline to demonstrate this idea. To our surprise, we find that significant multiplicative biases can arise (up to more than 10\%) due to redshift binning of the galaxies. Correction for this bias leads to about 1$σ$ increase of the best-fit value of $S_8$ from $0.760^{+0.015}_{-0.017}$ to $0.777^{+0.016}_{-0.019}$ in our tomography study.
