How to optimize an academic team when the outlier member is leaving?

An academic team is a highly-cohesive collaboration group of scholars, which has been recognized as an effective way to improve scientific output in terms of both quality and quantity. However, the high staff turnover brings about a series of problems that may have negative influence on team performance. To address this challenge, we first detect the tendency of the member who may potentially leave. Here the outlierness is defined with respect to familiarity, which is quantified by using collaboration intensity. It is assumed that if a team member has a higher familiarity with scholars outside the team, then this member might probably leave the team. To minimize the influence caused by the leaving of such an outlier member, we propose an optimization solution to find a proper candidate who can replace the outlier member. Based on random walk with graph kernel, our solution involves familiarity matching, skill matching, as well as structure matching. The proposed approach proves to be effective and outperforms existing methods when applied to computer science academic teams.

Non-Parametric Online Learning from Human Feedback for Neural Machine Translation

We study the problem of online learning with human feedback in the human-in-the-loop machine translation, in which the human translators revise the machine-generated translations and then the corrected translations are used to improve the neural machine translation (NMT) system. However, previous methods require online model updating or additional translation memory networks to achieve high-quality performance, making them inflexible and inefficient in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel non-parametric online learning method without changing the model structure. This approach introduces two k-nearest-neighbor (knn) modules: one module memorizes the human feedback, which is the correct sentences provided by human translators, while the other balances the usage of the history human feedback and original NMT models adaptively. Experiments conducted on EMEA and JRC-Acquis benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed method obtains substantial improvements on translation accuracy and achieves better adaptation performance with less repeating human correction operations.

Ensemble Chinese End-to-End Spoken Language Understanding for Abnormal Event Detection from audio stream

Conventional spoken language understanding (SLU) consist of two stages, the first stage maps speech to text by automatic speech recognition (ASR), and the second stage maps text to intent by natural language understanding (NLU). End-to-end SLU maps speech directly to intent through a single deep learning model. Previous end-to-end SLU models are primarily used for English environment due to lacking large scale SLU dataset in Chines, and use only one ASR model to extract features from speech. With the help of Kuaishou technology, a large scale SLU dataset in Chinese is collected to detect abnormal event in their live audio stream. Based on this dataset, this paper proposed a ensemble end-to-end SLU model used for Chinese environment. This ensemble SLU models extracted hierarchies features using multiple pre-trained ASR models, leading to better representation of phoneme level and word level information. This proposed approached achieve 9.7% increase of accuracy compared to previous end-to-end SLU model.

ChMusic: A Traditional Chinese Music Dataset for Evaluation of Instrument Recognition

Musical instruments recognition is a widely used application for music information retrieval. As most of previous musical instruments recognition dataset focus on western musical instruments, it is difficult for researcher to study and evaluate the area of traditional Chinese musical instrument recognition. This paper propose a traditional Chinese music dataset for training model and performance evaluation, named ChMusic. This dataset is free and publicly available, 11 traditional Chinese musical instruments and 55 traditional Chinese music excerpts are recorded in this dataset. Then an evaluation standard is proposed based on ChMusic dataset. With this standard, researchers can compare their results following the same rule, and results from different researchers will become comparable.

Continuous Human Action Detection Based on Wearable Inertial Data

Human action detection is a hot topic, which is widely used in video surveillance, human machine interface, healthcare monitoring, gaming, dancing training and musical instrument teaching. As inertial sensors are low cost, portable, and having no operating space, it is suitable to detect human action. In real-world applications, actions that are of interest appear among actions of non interest without pauses in between. Recognizing and detecting actions of interests from continuous action streams is more challenging and useful for real applications. Based on inertial sensor and C-MHAD smart TV gesture recognition dataset, this paper utilized different inertial sensor feature formats, then compared the performance with different deep neural network structures according to these feature formats. Experiment results show the best performance was achieved by image based inertial feature with convolution neural network, which got 51.1% F1 score.

Themes Informed Audio-visual Correspondence Learning

The applications of short-term user-generated video (UGV), such as Snapchat, and Youtube short-term videos, booms recently, raising lots of multimodal machine learning tasks. Among them, learning the correspondence between audio and visual information from videos is a challenging one. Most previous work of the audio-visual correspondence(AVC) learning only investigated constrained videos or simple settings, which may not fit the application of UGV. In this paper, we proposed new principles for AVC and introduced a new framework to set sight of videos' themes to facilitate AVC learning. We also released the KWAI-AD-AudVis corpus which contained 85432 short advertisement videos (around 913 hours) made by users. We evaluated our proposed approach on this corpus, and it was able to outperform the baseline by 23.15% absolute difference.

Objects detection for remote sensing images based on polar coordinates

Arbitrary-oriented object detection is an important task in the field of remote sensing object detection. Existing studies have shown that the polar coordinate system has obvious advantages in dealing with the problem of rotating object modeling, that is, using fewer parameters to achieve more accurate rotating object detection. However, present state-of-the-art detectors based on deep learning are all modeled in Cartesian coordinates. In this article, we introduce the polar coordinate system to the deep learning detector for the first time, and propose an anchor free Polar Remote Sensing Object Detector (P-RSDet), which can achieve competitive detection accuracy via uses simpler object representation model and less regression parameters. In P-RSDet method, arbitrary-oriented object detection can be achieved by predicting the center point and regressing one polar radius and two polar angles. Besides, in order to express the geometric constraint relationship between the polar radius and the polar angle, a Polar Ring Area Loss function is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of the corner position. Experiments on DOTA, UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets show that our P-RSDet achieves state-of-the-art performances with simpler model and less regression parameters.

Learning To Navigate The Synthetically Accessible Chemical Space Using Reinforcement Learning

Over the last decade, there has been significant progress in the field of machine learning for de novo drug design, particularly in deep generative models. However, current generative approaches exhibit a significant challenge as they do not ensure that the proposed molecular structures can be feasibly synthesized nor do they provide the synthesis routes of the proposed small molecules, thereby seriously limiting their practical applicability. In this work, we propose a novel forward synthesis framework powered by reinforcement learning (RL) for de novo drug design, Policy Gradient for Forward Synthesis (PGFS), that addresses this challenge by embedding the concept of synthetic accessibility directly into the de novo drug design system. In this setup, the agent learns to navigate through the immense synthetically accessible chemical space by subjecting commercially available small molecule building blocks to valid chemical reactions at every time step of the iterative virtual multi-step synthesis process. The proposed environment for drug discovery provides a highly challenging test-bed for RL algorithms owing to the large state space and high-dimensional continuous action space with hierarchical actions. PGFS achieves state-of-the-art performance in generating structures with high QED and penalized clogP. Moreover, we validate PGFS in an in-silico proof-of-concept associated with three HIV targets. Finally, we describe how the end-to-end training conceptualized in this study represents an important paradigm in radically expanding the synthesizable chemical space and automating the drug discovery process.

Oriented Objects as pairs of Middle Lines

The detection of oriented objects is frequently appeared in the field of natural scene text detection as well as object detection in aerial images. Traditional detectors for oriented objects are common to rotate anchors on the basis of the RCNN frameworks, which will multiple the number of anchors with a variety of angles, coupled with rotating NMS algorithm, the computational complexities of these models are greatly increased. In this paper, we propose a novel model named Oriented Objects Detection Network O^2-DNet to detect oriented objects by predicting a pair of middle lines inside each target. O^2-DNet is an one-stage, anchor-free and NMS-free model. The target line segments of our model are defined as two corresponding middle lines of original rotating bounding box annotations which can be transformed directly instead of additional manual tagging. Experiments show that our O^2-DNet achieves excellent performance on ICDAR 2015 and DOTA datasets. It is noteworthy that the objects in COCO can be regard as a special form of oriented objects with an angle of 90 degrees. O^2-DNet can still achieve competitive results in these general natural object detection datasets.

GRET: Global Representation Enhanced Transformer

Transformer, based on the encoder-decoder framework, has achieved state-of-the-art performance on several natural language generation tasks. The encoder maps the words in the input sentence into a sequence of hidden states, which are then fed into the decoder to generate the output sentence. These hidden states usually correspond to the input words and focus on capturing local information. However, the global (sentence level) information is seldom explored, leaving room for the improvement of generation quality. In this paper, we propose a novel global representation enhanced Transformer (GRET) to explicitly model global representation in the Transformer network. Specifically, in the proposed model, an external state is generated for the global representation from the encoder. The global representation is then fused into the decoder during the decoding process to improve generation quality. We conduct experiments in two text generation tasks: machine translation and text summarization. Experimental results on four WMT machine translation tasks and LCSTS text summarization task demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on natural language generation.

X-LineNet: Detecting Aircraft in Remote Sensing Images by a pair of Intersecting Line Segments

Motivated by the development of deep convolution neural networks (DCNNs), tremendous progress has been gained in the field of aircraft detection. These DCNNs based detectors mainly belong to top-down approaches, which first enumerate massive potential locations of objects with the form of rectangular regions, and then identify whether they are objects or not. Compared with these top-down approaches, this paper shows that aircraft detection via bottom-up approach still performs competitively in the era of deep learning. We present a novel one-stage and anchor-free aircraft detection model in a bottom-up manner, which formulates the task as detection of two intersecting line segments inside each target and grouping of them without any rectangular region classification. This model is named as X-LineNet. With simple post-processing, X-LineNet can simultaneously provide multiple representation forms of the detection result: the horizontal bounding box, the rotating bounding box, and the pentagonal mask. The pentagonal mask is a more accurate representation form which has less redundancy and can better represent aircraft than that of rectangular box. Experiments show that X-LineNet outperforms state-of-the-art one-stage object detectors and is competitive compared with advanced two-stage detectors on both UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 open dataset in the field of aircraft detection.

Multiple-objective Reinforcement Learning for Inverse Design and Identification

The aim of the inverse chemical design is to develop new molecules with given optimized molecular properties or objectives. Recently, generative deep learning (DL) networks are considered as the state-of-the-art in inverse chemical design and have achieved early success in generating molecular structures with desired properties in the pharmaceutical and material chemistry fields. However, satisfying a large number (larger than 10 objectives) of molecular objectives is a limitation of current generative models. To improve the model's ability to handle a large number of molecule design objectives, we developed a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based generative framework to optimize chemical molecule generation. Our use of Curriculum Learning (CL) to fine-tune the pre-trained generative network allowed the model to satisfy up to 21 objectives and increase the generative network's robustness. The experiments show that the proposed multiple-objective RL-based generative model can correctly identify unknown molecules with an 83 to 100 percent success rate, compared to the baseline approach of 0 percent. Additionally, this proposed generative model is not limited to just chemistry research challenges; we anticipate that problems that utilize RL with multiple-objectives will benefit from this framework.

Model-based Reinforcement Learning for Predictions and Control for Limit Order Books

We build a profitable electronic trading agent with Reinforcement Learning that places buy and sell orders in the stock market. An environment model is built only with historical observational data, and the RL agent learns the trading policy by interacting with the environment model instead of with the real-market to minimize the risk and potential monetary loss. Trained in unsupervised and self-supervised fashion, our environment model learned a temporal and causal representation of the market in latent space through deep neural networks. We demonstrate that the trading policy trained entirely within the environment model can be transferred back into the real market and maintain its profitability. We believe that this environment model can serve as a robust simulator that predicts market movement as well as trade impact for further studies.
