Reactive polar mesogenic self-assembly approach enables domain-programmable polymer ferroelectrics

Ferroelectric polymers combine switchable polarization with the processability of soft materials, but their development has been dominated by poly(vinylidene fluoride) and related fluoropolymers, whose crystalline polar phases restrict mechanical compliance and domain design with spatial precision. Here we establish a generic design principle for creating intrinsically flexible ferroelectric liquid-crystal polymers through reactive polar mesogenic self-assembly. The approach creates polyfluoroalkyl-free polymer films in which robust ferroelectric order arises from liquid-crystalline molecular organization rather than crystalline phase formation. By transferring ferroelectric order from fluid mesogenic states into polymer networks, the resulting materials combine mechanical adaptability with programmable polar architectures. Especially, the photoalignment technology enables these polar states to be organized into pixelated domain architectures. This work establishes a design space towards soft ferroelectric polymers that integrate molecularly programmed polar order, mechanical tunability and environmentally conscious chemistry, expanding the design space of adaptive materials for flexible electronics, wearable systems and soft robotics.

Rank-based transfer learning for high-dimensional survival data with application to sepsis data

Sepsis remains a critical challenge due to its high mortality and complex prognosis. To address data limitations in studying MSSA sepsis, we extend existing transfer learning frameworks to accommodate transformation models for high-dimensional survival data. Specifically, we construct a measurement index based on C-index for intelligently identifying the helpful source datasets, and the target model performance is improved by leveraging information from the identified source datasets via performing the transfer step and debiasing step. We further provide an algorithm to construct confidence intervals for each coefficient component. Another significant development is that statistical properties are rigorously established, including $\ell_1/\ell_2$-estimation error bounds of the transfer learning algorithm, detection consistency property of the transferable source detection algorithm and asymptotic theories for the confidence interval construction. Extensive simulations and analysis of MIMIC-IV sepsis data demonstrate the estimation and prediction accuracy, and practical advantages of our approach, providing significant improvements in survival estimates for MSSA sepsis patients.

Recurrent Neural Network from Adder's Perspective: Carry-lookahead RNN

The recurrent network architecture is a widely used model in sequence modeling, but its serial dependency hinders the computation parallelization, which makes the operation inefficient. The same problem was encountered in serial adder at the early stage of digital electronics. In this paper, we discuss the similarities between recurrent neural network (RNN) and serial adder. Inspired by carry-lookahead adder, we introduce carry-lookahead module to RNN, which makes it possible for RNN to run in parallel. Then, we design the method of parallel RNN computation, and finally Carry-lookahead RNN (CL-RNN) is proposed. CL-RNN takes advantages in parallelism and flexible receptive field. Through a comprehensive set of tests, we verify that CL-RNN can perform better than existing typical RNNs in sequence modeling tasks which are specially designed for RNNs.

Chip-scale Spontaneous Quasi-Phase-Matched Micro-Racetrack Resonator

Due to their capacity for non-classical light generation, high-efficiency second-order nonlinear parametric processes play an important role in quantum photonic technology, and chip-scale realization of these processes is recognized as the key to building efficient light sources for integrated quantum photonic circuits. To achieve ultra-high nonlinear conversion efficiency, traditional method uses quasi-phase matching (QPM) technology. However, QPM requires electric field poling, which is incompatible with the CMOS fabrication process, and this hinders the wafer-scale production of integrated photonic circuits. In this paper, we demonstrate efficient spontaneous quasi-phase matched (SQPM) frequency conversion in a micro-racetrack resonator. Our approach does not involve poling, but exploits the anisotropy of the ferroelectric crystals to allow the phase-matching condition to be fulfilled spontaneously as the TE-polarized light circulates in a specifically designed racetrack resonator. SQPM second harmonic generation is observed with a normalized intracavity conversion efficiency of 0.85%/W, corresponding to the 111st-order QPM. This could theoretically reach 186,000%/W by first-order QPM. In this case such high intracavity conversion efficiency can be implemented in practice with an optimized outward coupling. Our configurable SQPM approach will benefit the application of nonlinear frequency conversion in chip-scale integrated photonics with CMOS-compatible fabrication processes, and is applicable to other on-chip nonlinear processes such as quantum frequency conversion or frequency-comb generation.

Arbitrary access temporal pulse cloaking and restoring in periodically poled lithium niobate

Temporal cloaks have inspired the innovation of research on security and efficiency of quantum and fiber communications for concealing temporal events. The existing temporal cloaking approaches possessing ps ~ns cloaking windows employed the third-order nonlinearity mostly. Here we explore a temporal cloak for perpetually concealing pulse events using high efficiency second-order nonlinearity. A temporal pulse event was cloaked as a continuous wave with constant intensity and restored by polarization dependent sum frequency generation processes between the continuous wave and probe. The variety of quasi phase-matching second-order nonlinear processes in periodically poled lithium niobate make sure the pulse event cannot be filched during transmission. The proposed temporal cloak predicts hopeful applications in information security of photonic integrated circuit on lithium niobite thin film.

Broadband quasi-phase matching in MgO: PPLN thin film

Future quantum information networks operated on telecom channels require qubit transfer between different wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement. Qubit transfer is a nonlinear optical process, but currently the types of atoms used for quantum information processing and storage are limited by the narrow bandwidth of up-conversion available. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of broadband and high-efficiency quasi-phase matching second harmonic generation (SHG) in a chip-scale periodically poled lithium niobate thin film. We achieve large bandwidth of up to 2 THz for SHG by satisfying quasi-phase matching and group-velocity matching simultaneously. Furthermore, by changing film thickness, the central wavelength of quasi-phase matching SHG bandwidth can be modulated from 2.70 um to 1.44 um. The reconfigurable quasi-phase matching lithium niobate thin film provides a significant on-chip integrated platform for photonics and quantum optics.

High-quality lithium niobate photonic crystal nanocavities

Lithium niobate (LN) exhibits unique material characteristics that have found many important applications. Scaling LN devices down to a nanoscopic scale can dramatically enhance light-matter interaction that would enable nonlinear and quantum photonic functionalities beyond the reach of conventional means. However, developing LN-based nanophotonic devices turns out to be nontrivial. Although significant efforts have been devoted in recent years, LN photonic crystal structures developed to date exhibit fairly low quality. Here we demonstrate LN photonic crystal nanobeam resonators with optical Q as high as 10^5, more than two orders of magnitude higher than other LN nanocavities reported to date. The high optical quality together with tight mode confinement leads to extremely strong nonlinear photorefractive effect, with a resonance tuning rate of 0.64 GHz/aJ, or equivalently 84 MHz/photon, three orders of magnitude greater than other LN resonators. In particular, we observed intriguing quenching of photorefraction that has never been reported before. The devices also exhibit strong optomechanical coupling with gigahertz nanomechanical mode with a significant f*Q product of 1.47*10^12 Hz. The demonstration of high-Q LN photonic crystal nanoresonators paves a crucial step towards LN nanophotonics that could integrate the outstanding material properties with versatile nanoscale device engineering for diverse intriguing functionalities.

Tunable temporal gap based on simultaneous fast and slow light in electro-optic photonic crystals

We demonstrated a tunable temporal gap based on simultaneous fast and slow light in electro-optic photonic crystals. The light experiences an anomalous dispersion near the transmission center and a normal dispersion away from the center, where it can be accelerated and slowed down, respectively. We also obtained the switch between fast and slow light by adjusting the external electric filed. The observed largest temporal gap is 541 ps, which is crucial in practical event operation inside the gap. The results offer a new solution for temporal cloak.
