RGB-D Grasp Detection via Depth Guided Learning with Cross-modal Attention

Planar grasp detection is one of the most fundamental tasks to robotic manipulation, and the recent progress of consumer-grade RGB-D sensors enables delivering more comprehensive features from both the texture and shape modalities. However, depth maps are generally of a relatively lower quality with much stronger noise compared to RGB images, making it challenging to acquire grasp depth and fuse multi-modal clues. To address the two issues, this paper proposes a novel learning based approach to RGB-D grasp detection, namely Depth Guided Cross-modal Attention Network (DGCAN). To better leverage the geometry information recorded in the depth channel, a complete 6-dimensional rectangle representation is adopted with the grasp depth dedicatedly considered in addition to those defined in the common 5-dimensional one. The prediction of the extra grasp depth substantially strengthens feature learning, thereby leading to more accurate results. Moreover, to reduce the negative impact caused by the discrepancy of data quality in two modalities, a Local Cross-modal Attention (LCA) module is designed, where the depth features are refined according to cross-modal relations and concatenated to the RGB ones for more sufficient fusion. Extensive simulation and physical evaluations are conducted and the experimental results highlight the superiority of the proposed approach.

Optimal Decoy Resource Allocation for Proactive Defense in Probabilistic Attack Graphs

This paper investigates the problem of synthesizing proactive defense systems in which the defender can allocate deceptive targets and modify the cost of actions for the attacker who aims to compromise security assets in this system. We model the interaction of the attacker and the system using a formal security model -- a probabilistic attack graph. By allocating fake targets/decoys, the defender aims to distract the attacker from compromising true targets. By increasing the cost of some attack actions, the defender aims to discourage the attacker from committing to certain policies and thereby improve the defense. To optimize the defense given limited decoy resources and operational constraints, we formulate the synthesis problem as a bi-level optimization problem, while the defender designs the system, in anticipation of the attacker's best response given that the attacker has disinformation about the system due to the use of deception. Though the general formulation with bi-level optimization is NP-hard, we show that under certain assumptions, the problem can be transformed into a constrained optimization problem. We proposed an algorithm to approximately solve this constrained optimization problem using a novel incentive-design method for projected gradient ascent. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using extensive numerical experiments.

Towards Scale Balanced 6-DoF Grasp Detection in Cluttered Scenes

In this paper, we focus on the problem of feature learning in the presence of scale imbalance for 6-DoF grasp detection and propose a novel approach to especially address the difficulty in dealing with small-scale samples. A Multi-scale Cylinder Grouping (MsCG) module is presented to enhance local geometry representation by combining multi-scale cylinder features and global context. Moreover, a Scale Balanced Learning (SBL) loss and an Object Balanced Sampling (OBS) strategy are designed, where SBL enlarges the gradients of the samples whose scales are in low frequency by apriori weights while OBS captures more points on small-scale objects with the help of an auxiliary segmentation network. They alleviate the influence of the uneven distribution of grasp scales in training and inference respectively. In addition, Noisy-clean Mix (NcM) data augmentation is introduced to facilitate training, aiming to bridge the domain gap between synthetic and raw scenes in an efficient way by generating more data which mix them into single ones at instance-level. Extensive experiments are conducted on the GraspNet-1Billion benchmark and competitive results are reached with significant gains on small-scale cases. Besides, the performance of real-world grasping highlights its generalization ability. Our code is available at https://github.com/mahaoxiang822/Scale-Balanced-Grasp.

Synthesis of Proactive Sensor Placement In Probabilistic Attack Graphs

This paper studies the deployment of joint moving target defense (MTD) and deception against multi-stage cyberattacks. Given the system equipped with MTD that randomizes between different configurations, we investigate how to allocate a bounded number of sensors in each configuration to optimize the attack detection rate before the attacker achieves its objective. Specifically, two types of sensors are considered: intrusion detectors that are observable by the attacker and stealthy sensors that are not observable to the attacker. We propose a two-step optimization-based approach for allocating intrusion detectors and stealthy sensors: Firstly, the defender allocates intrusion detectors assuming the attacker will best respond to evade detection by intrusion detectors. Secondly, the defender will allocate stealthy sensors, given the best response attack strategy computed in the first step, to further reduce the attacker's chance of success. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods using a cyber defense example.

Boundary Guided Context Aggregation for Semantic Segmentation

The recent studies on semantic segmentation are starting to notice the significance of the boundary information, where most approaches see boundaries as the supplement of semantic details. However, simply combing boundaries and the mainstream features cannot ensure a holistic improvement of semantics modeling. In contrast to the previous studies, we exploit boundary as a significant guidance for context aggregation to promote the overall semantic understanding of an image. To this end, we propose a Boundary guided Context Aggregation Network (BCANet), where a Multi-Scale Boundary extractor (MSB) borrowing the backbone features at multiple scales is specifically designed for accurate boundary detection. Based on which, a Boundary guided Context Aggregation module (BCA) improved from Non-local network is further proposed to capture long-range dependencies between the pixels in the boundary regions and the ones inside the objects. By aggregating the context information along the boundaries, the inner pixels of the same category achieve mutual gains and therefore the intra-class consistency is enhanced. We conduct extensive experiments on the Cityscapes and ADE20K databases, and comparable results are achieved with the state-of-the-art methods, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed one.

Attention-Based Planning with Active Perception

Attention control is a key cognitive ability for humans to select information relevant to the current task. This paper develops a computational model of attention and an algorithm for attention-based probabilistic planning in Markov decision processes. In attention-based planning, the robot decides to be in different attention modes. An attention mode corresponds to a subset of state variables monitored by the robot. By switching between different attention modes, the robot actively perceives task-relevant information to reduce the cost of information acquisition and processing, while achieving near-optimal task performance. Though planning with attention-based active perception inevitably introduces partial observations, a partially observable MDP formulation makes the problem computational expensive to solve. Instead, our proposed method employs a hierarchical planning framework in which the robot determines what to pay attention to and for how long the attention should be sustained before shifting to other information sources. During the attention sustaining phase, the robot carries out a sub-policy, computed from an abstraction of the original MDP given the current attention. We use an example where a robot is tasked to capture a set of intruders in a stochastic gridworld. The experimental results show that the proposed method enables information- and computation-efficient optimal planning in stochastic environments.

Dynamic Hypergames for Synthesis of Deceptive Strategies with Temporal Logic Objectives

In this paper, we study the use of deception for strategic planning in adversarial environments. We model the interaction between the agent (player 1) and the adversary (player 2) as a two-player concurrent game in which the adversary has incomplete information about the agent's task specification in temporal logic. During the online interaction, the adversary can infer the agent's intention from observations and adapt its strategy so as to prevent the agent from satisfying the task. To plan against such an adaptive opponent, the agent must leverage its knowledge about the adversary's incomplete information to influence the behavior of the opponent, and thereby being deceptive. To synthesize a deceptive strategy, we introduce a class of hypergame models that capture the interaction between the agent and its adversary given asymmetric, incomplete information. A hypergame is a hierarchy of games, perceived differently by the agent and its adversary. We develop the solution concept of this class of hypergames and show that the subjectively rationalizable strategy for the agent is deceptive and maximizes the probability of satisfying the task in temporal logic. This deceptive strategy is obtained by modeling the opponent evolving perception of the interaction and integrating the opponent model into proactive planning. Following the deceptive strategy, the agent chooses actions to influence the game history as well as to manipulate the adversary's perception so that it takes actions that benefit the goal of the agent. We demonstrate the correctness of our deceptive planning algorithm using robot motion planning examples with temporal logic objectives and design a detection mechanism to notify the agent of potential errors in modeling of the adversary's behavior.
