SAIN: Structure-Aware Interactive Navigation with Active Dialogue Grounding for Mobile Robot

Most existing vision-language navigation tasks assume that instructions are complete and unambiguous. However, real-world robots often encounter natural human instructions that are ambiguous, underspecified, or incomplete, requiring them to resolve such uncertainties through active questioning. Interactive Instance Goal Navigation (IIGN) requires an embodied agent to find the specific instance under an ambiguous category-level instruction through active dialogue. However, existing dialogue-enabled methods often consume oracle answers as transient textual context for immediate decisions, rather than persistent spatial or object-centric structured state. We present SAIN, a zero-shot framework that turns active dialogue into persistent navigation state. Instead of consuming oracle answers as one-step text hints, SAIN compiles them into target evidence, route-level corridor memory, and object-candidate labels. These states are stored in structured value, room, graph, and object memories, then consumed by a unified policy for frontier ranking and final target approach. On the VL-LN IIGN benchmark, SAIN improves SR from 20.2 to 25.4 and SPL from 13.07 to 14.17 over the strongest reported dialogue-enabled baseline, while requiring no task-specific policy training. The results support dialogue-to-state conversion as an effective zero-shot mechanism for long-horizon interactive instance navigation. Project website: https://zorattc.github.io/SAIN/

DiffusionVS: A Generative Framework for Robust Visual Servoing Based on Diffusion Policy

Visual servoing is a fundamental technique in robotic manipulation and navigation. Regression-based visual servoing frequently experiences trajectory jitter as a result of noise-sensitive single-step mappings and the accumulation of errors during distribution shifts. In contrast, Diffusion Policy maintains temporal consistency by predicting action sequences and improves robustness through implicit data augmentation. This paper presents a novel diffusion-based servoing method. Based on Diffusion Policy, the proposed approach uses normalized image coordinates of observed tag corners as input and generates camera velocity through conditional denoising. To overcome the generalization limitations of models trained on static datasets, an online training paradigm is adopted, continuously expanding the diversity of training data through interactive experience collection. This strategy substantially enhances both the performance and generalization capability of the model. Comprehensive simulations and real-world experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving success rates of nearly 100\% in simulation and 93\% in physical experiments. Beyond the specific pipeline, we further validate the generality of the diffusion mechanism. Experiments show that existing visual servoing networks consistently achieve improved performance when integrated with our diffusion-based module. These results indicate that the proposed strategy possesses broad applicability and can enhance various visual servoing systems beyond the specific architecture presented here.

Decentralized Heterogeneous Multi-Robot Collaborative Exploration for Indoor and Outdoor 3D Environments

Heterogeneous multi-robot systems feature significant adaptability for complex environments. However, effective collaboration that fully exploits the robots' potential remains a core challenge. This paper proposes a decentralized collaborative framework for heterogeneous multi-robot systems to autonomously explore indoor and outdoor 3D environments. First, a basic perception map that integrates terrain and observation metrics is designed. Improved supervoxel segmentation is developed to simplify the map structure and form a high-level representation that supports lightweight communication. Second, the traversal and observation capabilities of heterogeneous robots are modeled to evaluate the requirements of task views derived from incomplete supervoxels. These task views are grouped by requirements and clustered to streamline assignment. Subsequently, the view-cluster assignment is formulated as a heterogeneous multi-depot multi-traveling salesman problem (HMDMTSP) that incorporates constraints between view-cluster requirements and robot capabilities. An improved genetic algorithm is developed to efficiently solve this problem while ensuring global consistency. Based on the assignments, redundant views within clusters are eliminated to refine exploration routes. Finally, conflicts between robots' motion paths are resolved. Simulations and field experiments in cluttered indoor and outdoor environments demonstrate that our approach effectively coordinates exploration tasks among heterogeneous robots, achieving superior exploration efficiency and communication savings compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

Adaptive Nonlinear MPC for Trajectory Tracking of An Overactuated Tiltrotor Hexacopter

Omnidirectional micro aerial vehicles (OMAVs) are more capable of doing environmentally interactive tasks due to their ability to exert full wrenches while maintaining stable poses. However, OMAVs often incorporate additional actuators and complex mechanical structures to achieve omnidirectionality. Obtaining precise mathematical models is difficult, and the mismatch between the model and the real physical system is not trivial. The large model-plant mismatch significantly degrades overall system performance if a non-adaptive model predictive controller (MPC) is used. This work presents the $\mathcal{L}_1$-MPC, an adaptive nonlinear model predictive controller for accurate 6-DOF trajectory tracking of an overactuated tiltrotor hexacopter in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances. The $\mathcal{L}_1$-MPC adopts a cascaded system architecture in which a nominal MPC is followed and augmented by an $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive controller. The proposed method is evaluated against the non-adaptive MPC, the EKF-MPC, and the PID method in both numerical and PX4 software-in-the-loop simulation with Gazebo. The $\mathcal{L}_1$-MPC reduces the tracking error by around 90% when compared to a non-adaptive MPC, and the $\mathcal{L}_1$-MPC has lower tracking errors, higher uncertainty estimation rates, and less tuning requirements over the EKF-MPC. We will make the implementations, including the hardware-verified PX4 firmware and Gazebo plugins, open-source at https://github.com/HITSZ-NRSL/omniHex.

EMMa: End-Effector Stability-Oriented Mobile Manipulation for Tracked Rescue Robots

The autonomous operation of tracked mobile manipulators in rescue missions requires not only ensuring the reachability and safety of robot motion but also maintaining stable end-effector manipulation under diverse task demands. However, existing studies have overlooked many end-effector motion properties at both the planning and control levels. This paper presents a motion generation framework for tracked mobile manipulators to achieve stable end-effector operation in complex rescue scenarios. The framework formulates a coordinated path optimization model that couples end-effector and mobile base states and designs compact cost/constraint representations to mitigate nonlinearities and reduce computational complexity. Furthermore, an isolated control scheme with feedforward compensation and feedback regulation is developed to enable coordinated path tracking for the robot. Extensive simulated and real-world experiments on rescue scenarios demonstrate that the proposed framework consistently outperforms SOTA methods across key metrics, including task success rate and end-effector motion stability, validating its effectiveness and robustness in complex mobile manipulation tasks.

HEATS: A Hierarchical Framework for Efficient Autonomous Target Search with Mobile Manipulators

Utilizing robots for autonomous target search in complex and unknown environments can greatly improve the efficiency of search and rescue missions. However, existing methods have shown inadequate performance due to hardware platform limitations, inefficient viewpoint selection strategies, and conservative motion planning. In this work, we propose HEATS, which enhances the search capability of mobile manipulators in complex and unknown environments. We design a target viewpoint planner tailored to the strengths of mobile manipulators, ensuring efficient and comprehensive viewpoint planning. Supported by this, a whole-body motion planner integrates global path search with local IPC optimization, enabling the mobile manipulator to safely and agilely visit target viewpoints, significantly improving search performance. We present extensive simulated and real-world tests, in which our method demonstrates reduced search time, higher target search completeness, and lower movement cost compared to classic and state-of-the-art approaches. Our method will be open-sourced for community benefit.

Real-Time LiDAR Point Cloud Compression and Transmission for Resource-constrained Robots

LiDARs are widely used in autonomous robots due to their ability to provide accurate environment structural information. However, the large size of point clouds poses challenges in terms of data storage and transmission. In this paper, we propose a novel point cloud compression and transmission framework for resource-constrained robotic applications, called RCPCC. We iteratively fit the surface of point clouds with a similar range value and eliminate redundancy through their spatial relationships. Then, we use Shape-adaptive DCT (SA-DCT) to transform the unfit points and reduce the data volume by quantizing the transformed coefficients. We design an adaptive bitrate control strategy based on QoE as the optimization goal to control the quality of the transmitted point cloud. Experiments show that our framework achieves compression rates of 40$\times$ to 80$\times$ while maintaining high accuracy for downstream applications. our method significantly outperforms other baselines in terms of accuracy when the compression rate exceeds 70$\times$. Furthermore, in situations of reduced communication bandwidth, our adaptive bitrate control strategy demonstrates significant QoE improvements. The code will be available at https://github.com/HITSZ-NRSL/RCPCC.git.

MSI-NeRF: Linking Omni-Depth with View Synthesis through Multi-Sphere Image aided Generalizable Neural Radiance Field

Panoramic observation using fisheye cameras is significant in virtual reality (VR) and robot perception. However, panoramic images synthesized by traditional methods lack depth information and can only provide three degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) rotation rendering in VR applications. To fully preserve and exploit the parallax information within the original fisheye cameras, we introduce MSI-NeRF, which combines deep learning omnidirectional depth estimation and novel view synthesis. We construct a multi-sphere image as a cost volume through feature extraction and warping of the input images. We further build an implicit radiance field using spatial points and interpolated 3D feature vectors as input, which can simultaneously realize omnidirectional depth estimation and 6DoF view synthesis. Leveraging the knowledge from depth estimation task, our method can learn scene appearance by source view supervision only. It does not require novel target views and can be trained conveniently on existing panorama depth estimation datasets. Our network has the generalization ability to reconstruct unknown scenes efficiently using only four images. Experimental results show that our method outperforms existing methods in both depth estimation and novel view synthesis tasks.

Generating 6-D Trajectories for Omnidirectional Multirotor Aerial Vehicles in Cluttered Environments

As fully-actuated systems, omnidirectional multirotor aerial vehicles (OMAVs) have more flexible maneuverability and advantages in aggressive flight in cluttered environments than traditional underactuated MAVs. %Due to the high dimensionality of configuration space, making the designed trajectory generation algorithm efficient is challenging. This paper aims to achieve safe flight of OMAVs in cluttered environments. Considering existing static obstacles, an efficient optimization-based framework is proposed to generate 6-D $SE(3)$ trajectories for OMAVs. Given the kinodynamic constraints and the 3D collision-free region represented by a series of intersecting convex polyhedra, the proposed method finally generates a safe and dynamically feasible 6-D trajectory. First, we parameterize the vehicle's attitude into a free 3D vector using stereographic projection to eliminate the constraints inherent in the $SO(3)$ manifold, while the complete $SE(3)$ trajectory is represented as a 6-D polynomial in time without inherent constraints. The vehicle's shape is modeled as a cuboid attached to the body frame to achieve whole-body collision evaluation. Then, we formulate the origin trajectory generation problem as a constrained optimization problem. The original constrained problem is finally transformed into an unconstrained one that can be solved efficiently. To verify the proposed framework's performance, simulations and real-world experiments based on a tilt-rotor hexarotor aerial vehicle are carried out.

Active Implicit Object Reconstruction using Uncertainty-guided Next-Best-View Optimization

Actively planning sensor views during object reconstruction is crucial for autonomous mobile robots. An effective method should be able to strike a balance between accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we propose a seamless integration of the emerging implicit representation with the active reconstruction task. We build an implicit occupancy field as our geometry proxy. While training, the prior object bounding box is utilized as auxiliary information to generate clean and detailed reconstructions. To evaluate view uncertainty, we employ a sampling-based approach that directly extracts entropy from the reconstructed occupancy probability field as our measure of view information gain. This eliminates the need for additional uncertainty maps or learning. Unlike previous methods that compare view uncertainty within a finite set of candidates, we aim to find the next-best-view (NBV) on a continuous manifold. Leveraging the differentiability of the implicit representation, the NBV can be optimized directly by maximizing the view uncertainty using gradient descent. It significantly enhances the method's adaptability to different scenarios. Simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that our approach effectively improves reconstruction accuracy and efficiency of view planning in active reconstruction tasks. The proposed system will open source at https://github.com/HITSZ-NRSL/ActiveImplicitRecon.git.

Towards Large-Scale Incremental Dense Mapping using Robot-centric Implicit Neural Representation

Large-scale dense mapping is vital in robotics, digital twins, and virtual reality. Recently, implicit neural mapping has shown remarkable reconstruction quality. However, incremental large-scale mapping with implicit neural representations remains problematic due to low efficiency, limited video memory, and the catastrophic forgetting phenomenon. To counter these challenges, we introduce the Robot-centric Implicit Mapping (RIM) technique for large-scale incremental dense mapping. This method employs a hybrid representation, encoding shapes with implicit features via a multi-resolution voxel map and decoding signed distance fields through a shallow MLP. We advocate for a robot-centric local map to boost model training efficiency and curb the catastrophic forgetting issue. A decoupled scalable global map is further developed to archive learned features for reuse and maintain constant video memory consumption. Validation experiments demonstrate our method's exceptional quality, efficiency, and adaptability across diverse scales and scenes over advanced dense mapping methods using range sensors. Our system's code will be accessible at https://github.com/HITSZ-NRSL/RIM.git.

Robot Safe Planning In Dynamic Environments Based On Model Predictive Control Using Control Barrier Function

Implementing obstacle avoidance in dynamic environments is a challenging problem for robots. Model predictive control (MPC) is a popular strategy for dealing with this type of problem, and recent work mainly uses control barrier function (CBF) as hard constraints to ensure that the system state remains in the safe set. However, in crowded scenarios, effective solutions may not be obtained due to infeasibility problems, resulting in degraded controller performance. We propose a new MPC framework that integrates CBF to tackle the issue of obstacle avoidance in dynamic environments, in which the infeasibility problem induced by hard constraints operating over the whole prediction horizon is solved by softening the constraints and introducing exact penalty, prompting the robot to actively seek out new paths. At the same time, generalized CBF is extended as a single-step safety constraint of the controller to enhance the safety of the robot during navigation. The efficacy of the proposed method is first shown through simulation experiments, in which a double-integrator system and a unicycle system are employed, and the proposed method outperforms other controllers in terms of safety, feasibility, and navigation efficiency. Furthermore, real-world experiment on an MR1000 robot is implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-object Detection, Tracking and Prediction in Rugged Dynamic Environments

Multi-object tracking (MOT) has important applications in monitoring, logistics, and other fields. This paper develops a real-time multi-object tracking and prediction system in rugged environments. A 3D object detection algorithm based on Lidar-camera fusion is designed to detect the target objects. Based on the Hungarian algorithm, this paper designs a 3D multi-object tracking algorithm with an adaptive threshold to realize the stable matching and tracking of the objects. We combine Memory Augmented Neural Networks (MANN) and Kalman filter to achieve 3D trajectory prediction on rugged terrains. Besides, we realize a new dynamic SLAM by using the results of multi-object tracking to remove dynamic points for better SLAM performance and static map. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed multi-object tracking and prediction system, several simulations and physical experiments are conducted. The results show that the proposed system can track dynamic objects and provide future trajectory and a more clean static map in real-time.

Hierarchical Adaptive Voxel-guided Sampling for Real-time Applications in Large-scale Point Clouds

While point-based neural architectures have demonstrated their efficacy, the time-consuming sampler currently prevents them from performing real-time reasoning on scene-level point clouds. Existing methods attempt to overcome this issue by using random sampling strategy instead of the commonly-adopted farthest point sampling~(FPS), but at the expense of lower performance. So the effectiveness/efficiency trade-off remains under-explored. In this paper, we reveal the key to high-quality sampling is ensuring an even spacing between points in the subset, which can be naturally obtained through a grid. Based on this insight, we propose a hierarchical adaptive voxel-guided point sampler with linear complexity and high parallelization for real-time applications. Extensive experiments on large-scale point cloud detection and segmentation tasks demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance with the most powerful FPS, at an amazing speed that is more than 100 times faster. This breakthrough in efficiency addresses the bottleneck of the sampling step when handling scene-level point clouds. Furthermore, our sampler can be easily integrated into existing models and achieves a 20$\sim$80\% reduction in runtime with minimal effort. Active View Planning for Visual SLAM in Outdoor Environments Based on Continuous Information Modeling

The visual simultaneous localization and mapping(vSLAM) is widely used in GPS-denied and open field environments for ground and surface robots. However, due to the frequent perception failures derived from lacking visual texture or the {swing} of robot view direction on rough terrains, the accuracy and robustness of vSLAM are still to be enhanced. The study develops a novel view planning approach of actively perceiving areas with maximal information to address the mentioned problem; a gimbal camera is used as the main sensor. Firstly, a map representation based on feature distribution-weighted Fisher information is proposed to completely and effectively represent environmental information richness. With the map representation, a continuous environmental information model is further established to convert the discrete information space into a continuous one for numerical optimization in real-time. Subsequently, the receding horizon optimization is utilized to obtain the optimal informative viewpoints with simultaneously considering the robotic perception, exploration and motion cost based on the continuous environmental model. Finally, several simulations and outdoor experiments are performed to verify the improvement of localization robustness and accuracy by the proposed approach.

Proxy-based Super Twisting Control Algorithm for Aerial Manipulators

Aerial manipulators are composed of an aerial multi-rotor that is equipped with a 6-DOF servo robot arm. To achieve precise position and attitude control during the arm's motion, it is critical for the system to have high performance control capabilities. However, the coupling effect between the multi-rotor UAVs' movement poses a challenge to the entire system's control capability. We have proposed a new proxy-based super twisting control approach for quadrotor UAVs that mitigates the disturbance caused by moving manipulators. This approach helps improve the stability of the aerial manipulation system when carrying out hovering or trajectory tracking tasks. The controller's effectiveness has been validated through numerical simulation and further tested in the Gazebo simulation environment.

RGB-D Inertial Odometry for a Resource-Restricted Robot in Dynamic Environments

Current simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms perform well in static environments but easily fail in dynamic environments. Recent works introduce deep learning-based semantic information to SLAM systems to reduce the influence of dynamic objects. However, it is still challenging to apply a robust localization in dynamic environments for resource-restricted robots. This paper proposes a real-time RGB-D inertial odometry system for resource-restricted robots in dynamic environments named Dynamic-VINS. Three main threads run in parallel: object detection, feature tracking, and state optimization. The proposed Dynamic-VINS combines object detection and depth information for dynamic feature recognition and achieves performance comparable to semantic segmentation. Dynamic-VINS adopts grid-based feature detection and proposes a fast and efficient method to extract high-quality FAST feature points. IMU is applied to predict motion for feature tracking and moving consistency check. The proposed method is evaluated on both public datasets and real-world applications and shows competitive localization accuracy and robustness in dynamic environments. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, it is the best-performance real-time RGB-D inertial odometry for resource-restricted platforms in dynamic environments for now. The proposed system is open source at: https://github.com/HITSZ-NRSL/Dynamic-VINS.git

Edge-based Monocular Thermal-Inertial Odometry in Visually Degraded Environments

State estimation in complex illumination environments based on conventional visual-inertial odometry is a challenging task due to the severe visual degradation of the visual camera. The thermal infrared camera is capable of all-day time and is less affected by illumination variation. However, most existing visual data association algorithms are incompatible because the thermal infrared data contains large noise and low contrast. Motivated by the phenomenon that thermal radiation varies most significantly at the edges of objects, the study proposes an ETIO, which is the first edge-based monocular thermal-inertial odometry for robust localization in visually degraded environments. Instead of the raw image, we utilize the binarized image from edge extraction for pose estimation to overcome the poor thermal infrared image quality. Then, an adaptive feature tracking strategy ADT-KLT is developed for robust data association based on limited edge information and its distance distribution. Finally, a pose graph optimization performs real-time estimation over a sliding window of recent states by combining IMU pre-integration with reprojection error of all edge feature observations. We evaluated the performance of the proposed system on public datasets and real-world experiments and compared it against state-of-the-art methods. The proposed ETIO was verified with the ability to enable accurate and robust localization all-day time.
